Hospital Room Shenanigans
Injured Idiots in Love
Last night had been an absolute disaster and disappointment. Firstly, his tantei-kun didn't show up to his heist. And okay, Kudou Shinichi, now that he was Kudou Shinichi again, was a very busy guy and he couldn't make every heist (though he did make sure that his Great Detective would be at the heists he specifically designed for Shinichi; usually, by sending a personalized note to the Kudou Mansion). Still, it was always disappointing when Kaito didn't get to see his detective. The gem was once again not Pandora. And on top of all of that, Snake actually managed to shoot him.
The injury was too severe to just be patched up. He needed to go to the hospital. So him and Jii faked a robbery, pretending that Kaito had been at the Blue Parrot all night and someone with a gun had tried to rob the place, but since it was closed for business that day, there was no money to have and the robber ended up shooting Kaito. At least the surgery had been a success. Or at least that was what Kaito suspected when he woke up, very much not dead but a little fuzzy.
"I'm so glad you're okay!" chirped a happy voice that Kaito vaguely recognized.
"Of course he is okay. He's the best detective, he wouldn't be bested by some criminal."
"Hey, guys, be a bit more quiet. My new roommate is still asleep," that voice he definitely knew.
Kaito opened his eyes wide and turned toward the source of the voices. The bed right next to his. The first voice, Ayumi, she was sitting on the other bed, kicking her legs back and forth. The second voice, Genta, was standing next to her. Mitsuhiko stood on Ayumi's other side. Haibara was sitting on the chair between the two beds, reading a magazine and looking uninterested. The professor was standing on the other side of the bed. And in the bed... Kudou Shinichi.
"I'm sorry, did the kids wake you?" asked Shinichi as he noticed Kaito's gaze.
"Ah. No. I... I guess the meds wore off," replied Kaito completely dazed.
No, wait, why was his Great Detective in the hospital?! Had he missed the heist because of that? Kaito had a million questions that he couldn't ask right now. Because there were the kids and also because he was currently Kuroba Kaito, who had absolutely no connection to Kudou Shinichi.
"When will you get out of the hospital, Shinichi-nii-san?" asked Mitsuhiko curiously.
"At least another three days, I'm afraid," Shinichi forced a pained smile as he reached out to ruffle the boy's hair. "But don't worry about it too much, okay? And don't get into trouble while I'm here."
"Don't worry. I'll keep an eye on them, Kudou-kun," assured Haibara calmly.
"Come now, I think we should let Shinichi-kun rest some more," suggested Professor Agasa as he tried to usher the kids out, though before leaving he looked at Kaito. "Would you like me to alert the nurses that you're awake? From what we heard, you had quite the close call."
"Ah. Yes. Thank you, that'd be nice," Kaito smiled politely, waving them goodbye.
With a heavy sigh did Shinichi collapse back into his bed, looking exhausted. Okay. Now Kaito was all alone in a hospital room with his crush, who didn't even know he was who he was. How was he supposed to deal with all of this? Also his head felt stuffed with cotton. He was saved from small-talk by the doctor, who ran the details of his surgery by him and checked him through.
"Robbery, huh?" asked Shinichi once the doctor was gone. "What happened?"
Ah. The lie that Jii and him had come up with just before Kaito had passed out from blood-loss.
"A friend of mine owns a billiard bar. We were playing when someone came in with a gun. Didn't like that there was no money and I was reckless, got myself shot," Kaito chuckled awkwardly, though he saw this as an opening. "How about you? What brings you here? The good food?"
A weak chuckle and a shake of his head. "I'm Kudou Shinichi, I'm a detective. The day before yesterday, during a case I was working on, the suspect stabbed me. Which is incredibly annoying."
"I'm sorry, did you just call being stabbed 'annoying'?" Kaito couldn't help but laugh, genuinely laugh. "Yes, quite the inconvenience, such a stab-wound."
"I had plans last night," Shinichi turned to glare at him fiercely. "And they didn't let me out of the hospital. It's all stitched up and bandaged, I don't see why I had to stay here and miss it."
"Plans, huh?" asked Kaito curiously, unable to stop himself. "What, like a date?"
No immediate annoyed denial. Huh. Instead, Shinichi flushed a pretty red and turned his head.
"Kind of," admitted Shinichi. "And I couldn't even cancel. He must think I stood him up."
Uhm. Kaito's eyes widened in surprise. Did his detective consider his heists dates?
"Ah, I'm... I'm sure your boyfriend will understand when he learns what happened."
"He won't," Shinichi huffed annoyed, crossing his arms – and Kaito was ready to argue. "He'll just get all 'Why did you let yourself be stabbed, you reckless detective?', I'll never hear the end of it."
Okay, that was actually fair, because that was Kaito's impulse reaction. Aw, his detective really knew him too well, it made him smile happily. Or maybe the drugs were kicking in. Or both.
"Shinichi?" Ran's voice, knocking on the door. "Is it okay if we come in?"
"Hey. You guys didn't have to come by again, you already visited yesterday," Shinichi smiled thinly.
Ran entered the room, followed by Sonoko, Sera and... Kaito narrowed his eyes. Amuro Tooru. The guy who had held him-as-grown-up-Haibara at gun-point before and nearly exploded him. And worse yet! Who had gotten praise from his tantei-kun for performing mediocre card-tricks! During a KID heist, at that. The insult. Kaito glared as he watched the blonde closely.
"You were looking forward to last night so much, we felt like we should come by," offered Amuro. "I also brought you lemon pie from Poirot, I thought after two days of hospital food..."
"Thank you," Shinichi groaned relieved and accepted the box.
Kaito's glare hardened even more when he saw Shinichi this happy because of Amuro. Sera and Sonoko sat down on his bed, while Ran adjusted the flowers on Shinichi's bedside table. Suddenly, an awful thought crossed his mind. What if the 'date' had been with Amuro? Amuro had come in here, saying that Shinichi had missed the heist and bringing sweet treats for Kaito's detective.
"Here. We went by the manor to bring you books," offered Sonoko, feigning annoyance as she got a book out of her bag. "I just grabbed something Holmes, that should do the trick, right."
The friendship between Shinichi and Sonoko always fascinated Kaito, because despite the mutual snark and insults, the two were close and relied on each other. They had been friends as long as Shinichi and Ran. Kaito knew that Shinichi cared a great deal about Sonoko.
"How was the heist?" asked Shinichi, trying to sit up, looking at the others.
"Sonoko filmed the majority of it," replied Sera amused. "It was... Honestly, KID didn't seem to be at his best. He seemed annoyed. Maybe he didn't like that you missed his heist?"
"Right," Shinichi huffed. "Because the elusive thief pouts when a detective is missing."
"You're in an awful mood," commented Sonoko. "Maybe you shouldn't get stabbed."
"It's not the getting stabbed part!" Shinichi glared at her. "It's the being stuck here part! I'm fine. The bleeding stopped, they stitched me up, why won't they let me go home."
"Because if they had let you go home, you would have absolutely attended the heist yesterday," Ran fixed him with a glare. "You are supposed to rest, otherwise you may tear your stitches, and you will not rest if you are let out of here! You'd go out there and solve murders."
Shinichi grumbled a little but at least he didn't try to argue that. A fond smile spread over Kaito's lips as he watched his detective banter with his childhood friend. Seeing Shinichi like that made Kaito happy, because for too long, Shinichi had to pretend to be someone else around her.
"I think we should probably let you rest, Shinichi," stated Ran as she brushed his hair back.
Shinichi rolled his eyes fondly, while Kaito kept glaring at Amuro's head as they left. He was so envious that this guy got to be close to Shinichi, to the point of being allowed to just casually spend time with Shinichi. What if he really was Shinichi's boyfriend? Kaito's heart cracked a little.
"You seem in a bad mood," commented Shinichi softly after his friends were gone.
"Was that your boyfriend?" asked Kaito without meaning to blurt it out like that. "Uh. I mean, since he said that you... were supposed to go somewhere together yesterday. And brought you pie."
Shinichi blinked doe-eyed over at him. "Amuro-san is not my boyfriend."
Kaito perked up in relief, just about to ask the pressing matters, as the door opened once more and a very loud girl came running to his bed, throwing herself at him. Aoko was directly followed by her dad, a tired and worried look on the inspector's face as he approached Kaito to ruffle his hair.
"Hey, kiddo," Ginzo's voice was a soft, worried whisper. "Jii-san called us, told us what happened. How are you feeling? He said the surgery went well. He also called your mom."
"Kaito scared Aoko!" Aoko sounded so upset. "You can't do that! You should have gone to the heist with me! Then this wouldn't have happened. I would have been annoyed with Kaito fanboying, but you would be fine and not in the hospital. You have to be more careful!"
Kaito's heart clenched as he wrapped his arms around Aoko. "I'm fine. I'm sorry I worried you."
"I asked the nurse. You'll have to stay here for three days," stated Ginzo. "You're going to stay at our place for a few days after, okay? So Aoko can keep a better eye on you, make sure you change your bandages and take your meds and rest instead of thinking up pranks."
"...Thank you," whispered Kaito softly, smiling at the Nakamoris.
"Kudou-kun," Ginzo turned to look at the other bed. "What are you doing here?"
"Nakamori-keibu," Shinichi blinked a couple of times. "I, ah, I got injured during a case."
Ginzo looked concerned at that, nodding slowly. "You should be more careful, Kudou-kun."
"I'll... do my best," Shinichi smiled thinly. "Next heist, I'll be back to get in your way again."
"Good. KID is decidedly less of a nuisance to my people when you distract him."
The smile on Shinichi's lips turned more real. After, Kaito got distracted by Aoko telling him all about their class and how things were going, how everyone wished him to get better. The Nakamoris left after half an hour, leaving Kaito alone with Shinichi once more.
"Maybe my injury is affecting me more than I thought," whispered Shinichi after a few moments. "Should have realized it sooner. You're KID. Your face. Your eyes. The strange hostility you displayed for Amuro-san that I've tried to figure out, but now kind of feel like you're... jealous. You asked if he's my boyfriend. You're jealous of Amuro-san. And you're best friends with Nakamori-keibu's daughter."
This time, Kaito blinked doe-eyed at the detective. "Ah. Uh. Yes. To... all three, I suppose."
"I was talking about you, before," whispered Shinichi with red cheeks. "The... date. The heist."
"Oh," Kaito swallowed hard. "So... would you like to go on a real date when we get out of here?"
Shinichi turned toward him with a flustered smile. "I'd... like that a lot."
~*~ The End ~*~
Author's note: I did Kaito injured during a heist and Shin taking care of him, I did Shinichi in the hospital after getting injured during a case and Kaito visiting him, and I figured the next logical step is to have them both injured, at the same time, sharing a hospital room ;D
