Summary: Hakuba Saguru, from an old hawk-shifter family, always figured he'd find a mate who was a bird too. Instead, he falls for a famous cat-shifter. Kudou Shinichi.

The Hawk's Prey

Like Cats and Birds...?

Every Hakuba for a hundred generations or more had been a hawk-shifter. Among the birds of prey surely the most prestigious bird, if Saguru may say so himself. Elegant, efficient, beautiful.

Chances of their off-springs also being hawks were highest if they married into other hawk-shifter families, of course. Yet other birds resulted in a high enough chance too. It was when they married into other types of shifter-families when the chances of keeping the prestigious hawk bloodline going became slim. Since Saguru was proud of his heritage and the family history, it had always been without question to him that once he'd present as an alpha, he would find a lovely omega bird-shifter and continue the family line. Something he never questioned, never doubted.

And then he met Kudou Shinichi during a heist.

The great Heisei Holmes, perhaps the most famous detective Japan had to offer. Of course had Saguru heard about him before. Admittedly, the chance to meet this detective had been one of the reasons Saguru had first returned to Japan. Yet his return coincided with Shinichi's disappearance. For two years, nobody seemed to know where he was. And then he returned.

Barely returned, he attended a heist. Peculiar, considering that from all Saguru had read the other was only interested in murders and not in theft. Yet he took that heist serious. With sharp eyes, attentive, not letting KID out of his sight. He proved much, much more efficient than the task-force and Saguru found himself captured by the detective's deduction skills.

Reading about them was one thing, but to actually see it with his own eyes? See how intense those blue eyes were when he zoomed in on a theory, the knowing smirk, the quick wit. He was amazing. Mesmerizing. Saguru had never met anyone like Kudou Shinichi.

Not to mention that the brilliant detective was an omega. Saguru could smell it when they first introduced themselves. A sensible smell, like old books but also like fresh grass and the sweetness was that of... lemon pie. Peculiar. It was nice. Saguru wouldn't mind smelling that scent more often.

The twist came at the end of the night, when the two of them had KID cornered and Shinichi shifted as he jumped the thief. A cat. A fluffy, dark-brown cat, fur the same shade as his hair.

Hakuba Saguru was a strange guy. Then again, Shinichi himself was considered a strange guy by most people. The detective geek, the one obsessed with murders, bit awkward when it came to social interactions. Hakuba wasn't obsessed with murders, but rather with theft. Or one thief in particular. Said thief made them meet for the first time.

Once Shinichi got his body back, he still attended heists. He'd gotten so used to it. And it paid off, in a different way, when he met the alpha of his dreams. Not that he'd put it such a cheesy way out loud, but damn. Hakuba was pretty, brilliant and he loved Holmes.

They started off as a good team, hunting KID and giving him the chase of his life. Then they talked. Talked more, during following heists. Started hanging out with each other, mostly because Ran and Aoko – a close friend of Hakuba's – hit it off while the boys were off chasing KID. Then they started hanging out without the girls. And then, finally, they started calling those 'dates'.

Shinichi was even prettier in his half-shifted form – with the long, fluffy tail lazily whipping back and forth behind him, the velvety triangular ears poking out from his dark hair. Cute kitten. Not that Saguru would put it like that aloud, it'd be quite untypical for him. To himself however, he thought it a lot. Especially whenever Shinichi was over, visiting the Hakuba Mansion.

The omega would come over particularly after a hard day, a long draining case. Because he found comfort in the alpha's arms – and Saguru took pride in that. He'd never been an omega's comfort zone. But then, he found serenity in Shinichi's arms. The omega's soft scent soothed him.

"Kudou-kun," Saguru spoke gently, his fingers running through Shinichi's hair. "Would you like me to read to you, or do you prefer silence?"

Some nights, Shinichi would be so tired, he'd just want to rest and then fall asleep. Other nights, when it had been an especially cruel case, Shinichi preferred the distraction of Sherlock Holmes. It had become a kind of tradition between them, that they would read to each other. Some nights, it was Saguru who found his way to the Kudou Manor and he'd rest his head in Shinichi's lap and let the omega read to him. When Saguru had jetleg, returning from Europe – either chasing Spider or going back to England to visit his mother. Tonight however was one of the nights Shinichi came to him and practically collapsed into his lap, curled together next to him.

"Read," whispered Shinichi, already sounding sleepy. "Please?"

One of the velvet cat-ears twitched as he tilted his head so he could look up at the alpha. Like Saguru could possibly deny his omega anything when he looked at Saguru like that. Not that he wanted to deny him anything. While one hand still continued playing with Shinichi's hair, his other hand reached out to grab the nearest book – something laying on the table next to the couch.

Shinichi was a cat. Not a bird. Yet his nest consisted of a lot of feathers. Ironically enough, not even feathers from his own hunts. He was a cat, a predator too. Could have caught birds and used their feathers. But no. No, no, all of these feathers in his nest were willingly donated by one Hakuba Saguru. His alpha. His very adorably flustered alpha, every time Shinichi asked him for feathers. It wasn't embarrassing, the two were dating, it was normal for an omega to build their nest with whatever their alpha could give them; furs or feathers. Apparently, it was flattering for Saguru and that was why he blushed so much about it. Which was just adorable.

A high noise caught the kitten's attention and Shinichi turned toward the hawk flying into his bedroom. Shinichi preferred to nest in his shifted form, mostly because a small kitten needed less space than a grown man. Shinichi meowed pleased when his hawk landed next to him, so he could gently bump his head against the alpha and accept the courting gift. Freshly hunted mouse. Which would be gross, if Shinichi wasn't a cat right now. He loved when Saguru shared his prey.
