Summary: During the first few weeks of college, Shinichi starts hearing about some 'fun guy' who performs magic tricks. It couldn't possibly be KID, going to the same college as him, right? Right?
The Campus Magician
A Second First Meeting
"Ah, he's so talented! I love watching him! Reminds me of the days of KID-sama's heists."
Shinichi had effectively tuned Sonoko out until that very moment. The mention of KID caught his attention. Not that he'd admit that aloud. Especially not to Sonoko. Still, he looked up from his coffee to watch Sonoko and Ran more closely. It wasn't rare for Shinichi to tune their morning coffee conversations out, mostly because he was too tired after a day of classes, the usual murder case and studying or writing an essay. As long as he was physically present, Ran was pleased.
"Who are you talking about?" asked Shinichi slowly.
"Haven't you seen him yet?" Ran looked at him surprised. "There is a student, first semester like us. He's a magician and puts up random impromptu shows all around campus! Cheering people up. He's very talented and charming. But a bit of a good-ball. What was his name again...?"
"Kuro... Kuro... Kuro-something. Kurosawa?" Sonoko furrowed her brows thoughtfully. "I heard someone say his name during one of his shows, but I can't really remember."
A magician on campus? Talented enough for Sonoko to invoke KID's name? It couldn't possibly be... the real KID, could it? No, even the white-clad nuisance would have enough self preservation to not go around still performing magic after KID's retirement. No wait what was he saying? KID and self preservation. The guy who constantly provoked Shinichi into kicking soccer balls at him.
"And he is just... out there, in the campus? At random?"
"Yeah," replied Sonoko. "Last time he performed in front of the library. The time before, the cafeteria. I guess he just starts performing when he feels like it."
Mh that sounded interesting. Shinichi's eyes narrowed. And then he got shoved by Ran.
"You have that look on your face again," chided Ran. "This isn't a mystery to solve. It's a student who is doing something nice that others appreciate."
"Yes, yes," Shinichi waved a hand. "I'm not trying to solve anything. Just curious."

It took another week before Shinichi actually tracked that student down. Kuroba was the name. Kuroba Kaito. He tracked him down to a history class, waiting outside the door for the class to finish. But after it ended, nobody exited the room. So Shinichi opened the door and peaked in.
There he stood, on top of a table. His hair was messy and dark-brown, his eyes a familiar shade of violet-blue. The way his hands moved was mesmerizing and relaxing for Shinichi, because he knew those hands. He knew those quick, cunning movements. The way his body moved too.
That was KID. The idiot was really out there, performing magic tricks just like that. Shinichi chook his head and crossed his arms over his chest. Though he was unable to look away, right to the end. When everybody clapped and cheered and Kuroba took a bow. The next moment, the magician disappeared in a puff of smoke. How very KID of him. Ridiculous idiot, he was really advertising his identity here, it was a miracle nobody had put it together yet.
"A flower for my prettiest audience member."
Shinichi blinked when the magician reappeared right in front of him, offering him a white rose. Cheesy. The blush was hard to fight, regardless of how cheesy the gesture was. He accepted the rose and smelled it, though his eyes didn't leave Kuroba. What was going to be the thief's next move?
"I've never seen you in this course before," stated Kuroba with a grin. "You're Kudou Shinichi, right? I've seen you all over the news. Famous teen detective."
"You're Kuroba Kaito, right?" countered Shinichi. "Everyone on campus seems to love your shows. I figured I'd have to go and see myself when your performance was compared to Kaitou KID."
"Wha—at? Someone would compare me to the great Kaitou KID? So flattering!"
Shinichi leveled an unimpressed look at him. "You can fool them, because they never saw you perform up-close. But don't insult me by trying to fool me, sneak thief."
There was something curious on Kaito's face. Surprise, followed by a pleased expression. With a broad grin on his lips did he bounce on the back of his feet for a few times before heading out. Leading the way. Shinichi followed, out of curiosity. And perhaps also because KID had slipped from him once before and he couldn't let him slip away again.
"Why, are you expecting me to admit to a crime in front of the world's greatest detective?" Kaito turned to look at him with his head tilted. "That would be very foolish, wouldn't you agree?"
"You seem the foolish type," replied Shinichi dryly. "Performing magic like that."
"Oh but KID-sama is very very popular! Many have been inspired by him," argued Kaito, performing a simple card-trick with one hand, just to keep his hands busy. "Not just me."
"Mh. Sure," Shinichi sighed, giving up on getting a straight answer. "In the hypothetical then, why do you think Kaitou KID just disappeared? It's curious, isn't it? Reappearing after a decade, but only for four years, and then disappearing without a trace, after a big final show."
"Well, hypothetically speaking," Kaito drawled, putting emphasis on it. "My theory would be that KID may have found whatever it was he was looking for, don't you agree?"
"Yes. That... That's my theory too," Shinichi shifted some, licking his lips. "Do... you think he's done for good? Personally, it always seemed to me like he was... doing more than just search for that one specific gem. He was having fun performing. And he... he helped people."
Shinichi was trying not to sound too invested. Something must have slipped in though, considering the look Kaito was giving him. The magician paused and turned to fully face him.
"I think that maybe KID might need some time to sort his thoughts and take care of some... non-thieving-things – like, who knows, school or work or college – and once he's settled, perhaps he'll return to the fun parts," replied Kaito, a grin spreading on his face. "Hypothetically speaking."
It was hard not to perk up at that. The duels of wits had been some of Shinichi's favorite. He'd been remorseful that KID disappeared only a few, short months after Shinichi returned. Kaito chuckled.
"But, hypotheticals aside, KID's not active right now," declared Kaito in a firm voice. "But if you're looking for a dazzling magician... I wouldn't mind spending time with you."
Shinichi smiled faintly and shook his head. "Actually I'm looking for a battle of wits."
"Well," Kaito smiled, a very charming and cute smile. "If you ever want those... we could... meet. Outside of campus. Maybe for... lunch, or coffee, or dinner. Like a... date."
Shinichi raised his eyebrows and blushed faintly. Oh. That... was also an option.

Author's note: I do love the douji concept of "and they meet at university by chance" so I had to use that too ;D
Now, here's a gentle reminder that if you want to see a sequel to any of the previous Magic Mondays, you can vote for it in a poll on the top of my FFNet profile (if you're using a browser; it apparently doesn't show up on mobile)!
