Writer's Month 2022
"Thank you so much for inviting us along too, Sonoko-chan!"
Aoko offered her happiest smile to their hostess, who laughed. "Of course, Aoko-chan! You are now one of us! Besides, you too have to put up with an annoying teen detective brat."
"Sonoko!" Ran sounded mildly distressed, reaching out for the hand of the 'annoying teen detective brat' she was dating. "I told you not to say that, it's mean."
Sera grinned and squeezed her girlfriend's hand. "It's okay. She's not wrong."
"Yeah," Heiji agreed and adjusted his cap. "I know we can really drag meeting."
"You would just not have to always run off when someone screams murder. You have the option of just sitting still and letting the police handle it," Sonoko nodded seriously. "So, none of that running off this weekend! This weekend is about happy couples at the beach!"
To make her point, she linked fingers with her own boyfriend. Makoto flushed a bit, happy to hold her hand. To celebrate their graduation, Sonoko had decided to invite all their friends to a weekend getaway at the beach villa her uncle owned. If she considered that just two years ago, there had only been three of them – Shinichi, Ran and Sonoko – and how much their circle of friends had grown over the past two years? She was pleased by that, to be quite honest.
They'd met Kazuha and Heiji while Shinichi had been gone and Ran and Sonoko had an easy time befriending Kazuha. Heiji wasn't bad either, but the weirdo preferred spending his time with the kid than with other teenagers. Though now that Conan was back home with his parents, Heiji seemed better at befriending people his own age; him and Shinichi had pretty much hit it off right away once Shinichi had returned a couple weeks after Conan left about a year ago.
Then there was Makoto, obviously. Sonoko's handsome, talented, wonderful, sweet boyfriend-to-be-fiance (she had found the engagement ring three weeks ago when looking for a tissue at Makoto's place and now she was just sitting there, waiting for the proposal).
The next person to join their little group had been Sera Masumi. Another teen detective. This one though, Sonoko could forgive. Because she finally helped Ran get over Shinichi. As much as Sonoko always hyped Ran's feelings for Shinichi, the longer he had been gone, the sadder Ran grew. What had been happy, cute feelings once turned into longing and pain and Sonoko hated seeing Ran like that. But then Sera came into their life and Ran smiled again more. They found a connection, over their martial arts, and Sera was a teen detective – which was clearly Ran's type.
The latest additions to their friend group had been brought into their lives by the return of Shinichi. Because Shinichi came back with a boyfriend. Kuroba Kaito, teen magician, prankster and the second biggest Kaitou KID fan (after Sonoko, clearly). Sonoko had to say, she approved of Shinichi's taste in men. Her and Kaito pretty much instantly became second best friends (second to Ran and Aoko respectively). Which brought her to the other couple that came as a package deal with Kaito – Nakamori Aoko and her boyfriend, the teen detective Hakuba Saguru. Where Ran and Aoko really hit it off, Saguru and Heiji had an instant rivalry and dislike of each other.
Still, Sonoko had invited all four other couples and she was determined to make this trip good.
"Ka—aito—o-ku—un!" Sonoko turned around to look for her best not-Ran-friend. "Why are you hiding behind your detective geek? Come here! I need to show you the glory of the mansion?"
"I, ah..." Kaito peeked out from behind Shinichi's shoulder. "Not a fan of the ocean."
"Yes! Aoko is surprised that Kaito decided to come with us," Aoko turned to look at him. "He is deadly afraid of fish. And there is a lot of fishes in the ocean."
"Oh," Sonoko blinked a few times. "Wait. Is that true?"
Kaito, clinging onto Shinichi's hand for dear life and putting Shinichi between himself and the ocean, nodded. "Yeah. I am... It's a real phobia, you know. I hate fishes."
Sonoko made a mental note to cancel tonight's dinner and think of something else, because she had planned a big seafood barbecue for their first evening. Out of the corner of her eyes, she saw Shinichi gently run his thumb over the back of Kaito's hand.
"I had to promise him to protect him from any fishes," tagged Shinichi on.
"Aw, that's so cute," Sonoko cooed. "Didn't think you could be cute, Holmes geek."
"We Holmes geeks can be quite romantic if we want to," pointed Saguru out.
"Yes, that is true," Aoko turned to smile at him. "Saguru and Shinichi-kun took me and Kaito out on many fun double dates, you know. And only three thirds are Holmes themed."
"...Only," muttered Hattori beneath his breath, huffing softly.
That earned him a not so gentle nudge from Kazuha. "At least they put thought into their dates."
"I'm trying!" Hattori sputtered, flushing brightly. "Dates are hard!"
Sonoko clapped. "Okay, okay, okay. Enough of that. Come inside! Let me show you your rooms!"

Kaito thought he was tempting fate by going on a beach vacation not just with his boyfriend but with three other teen detectives. But his wonderful boyfriend actually kept his promise. Despite his nature, when there was a case at the beach itself, he did not leave Kaito all alone. He left the mystery to Heiji, Saguru and Sera (though Kaito was aware that he kept texting with the three), instead he played beach volleyball with Kaito, Makoto and Ran. The nice thing about these couple things that they kept doing was that they were all more than their romantic relationships. Kaito knew how to spend time with Aoko, Sonoko and Ran even without Shinichi, they all had their own friendships among the group. And overall, aside from one close call with a fish, he had a lot of fun.
"Thank you," whispered Kaito softly, kissing Shinichi's cheek at the bonfire on evening two.
"I love you," Shinichi flushed. "I... wanted you to be here too. And I will protect you."
Aw, his detective could be so cute. Grinning to himself, Kaito leaned over to this time actually get a proper kiss from Shinichi. He was glad he had come too, because it was great. Getting away from the stress, celebrating their graduation, being with their friends. He sighed contently and rested his chin on Shinichi's shoulder. His savior. Before he could say anything else, yelling interrupted. And in the first moment, he feared another murder. But no, it was Sonoko, screaming, with Makoto on one knee in front of her. And ah, finally, it was about time! Kaito smiled, happy for his friend.

Author's note: Somehow, Sonoko, and MakoSono, gained more attention the more I wrote so I figured they deserved the upgrade to co-main-ship xD But yeees! Let's open up Writer's Month with some summer fun!
