The Comfort of Soulmates
Writer's Month 2022
Kaito had always been eager to meet his soulmates. Seeing the love between his own parents, he couldn't wait to find someone to fit with him that way. To provide the same support and comfort as his parents provided to each other. There was only one time where Kaito wavered and that was when his father had died. Losing her soulmate had shattered Chikage. She started to distance herself from Tokyo and Kaito found himself more or less growing up with the Nakamoris.
All that changed once more when Kaito actually found one of his soulmates. Hakuba Saguru. A nagging, persistent and very brilliant detective who had set his mind to making poor little phantom thief's lives harder than they had to be. Which meant he needed some time to figure out how to approach that, how to tell him the truth. In the end, being soulmates won out, Kaito's faith in soulmates won out against his fears. And it paid off.
Yes, Saguru had some problems with Kaito being a thief, but after Kaito sat down with him and explained everything in great detail, why he did what he did and what the men in black had done to his father, Saguru... understood. After all, he was chasing Spider, an associate of the men in black, himself. That alone truly made Kaito believe in faith; destiny had given him a soulmate who was hunting the same bad men that he had been fighting all alone for so long now.
And then he found his second soulmate. This one was a bit more complicated, because he didn't know at first. He didn't know who it was; the day his mark manifested was a very busy heist and any number of bystanders or officers could have been it. In the end, it was the guy in the helicopter who had kept him on his toes, but for too long did he not even know that man's name.
Kudou Shinichi. A nagging, persistent and very brilliant detective who had set his mind to making poor little phantom thief's lives harder than they had to be. At which point Kaito sense a theme there. However, he only found that out thanks to Saguru.
Because Saguru's second soul-mark manifested when he was on a golden mansion and met Edogawa Conan for the first time. After that weekend, when they reunited, Saguru was practically a wreck, so confused about their soulmate being a decade younger than them. Which was where Kaito came in handy, because he knew Conan's big secret. And with that, he figured out who had been in the helicopter during the clock tower heist.
The next heist, the two of them confronted Conan together and Kaito nudged, very gently, for Conan to share his real name and his story with their shared soulmate.
And oh, sharing he did. That was how Kaito learned that he had not one but two soulmates chasing after the men in black. And both his detectives realized they had more allies than anticipated.
It was great! They worked well together as a team. Through thick and thin. First, Kaito and Saguru helped Shinichi take down his men in black – which, in the greater scheme of things was a different branch working for the same boss as the ones Kaito and Saguru were chasing. With that, Shinichi got his body back, which made the whole soulbond feel so much better.
Finally, they could be together, more physical than before. Yet Kaito's men in black were still out there. Snake was still out there. The only comfort Kaito had was knowing that both of his soulmates were there to help him, ready to put them behind bars first chance they got.

Kaito was exhausted. He was so exhausted. Most of the time, he loved his heists. He loved being KID. The magic shows, the thrill of the chase, outwitting the police. It was amazing and brought him joy. But there were heists that were different. More draining. The ones where people got hurt or died, the ones where his soulmates couldn't make it, the ones where Aoko was really mad at KID for stealing her dad's time. Any of those were incredibly frustrating. But when all of those coincided? Those were the worst heists. And tonight had been such a night.
Saguru had texted him and Shinichi this morning that he wouldn't be back from London in time for the heist because due to weather his flight was delayed. And that was okay. But then, not long before the heist, Shinichi texted Kaito, excusing himself too because he was stuck in a case. And of course could Shinichi not let a murderer run free just so he could attend his boyfriend's heist.
All of that would have been okay. But then something had gone wrong, a rookie had panicked during one of Kaito's tricks, his gun had gone off and hit an innocent KID fan. They had... Kaito didn't know what had happened to the injured person. It was so tiresome and Kaito couldn't even slip into his best friend's place to talk to Aoko, because she was fuming, blaming KID for it. Which was something Kaito just couldn't handle right now. So he returned to the cold, empty Kudou Mansion, where Kaito, Saguru and Shinichi were living together by now.
"I'm home," Kaito called out, out of routine.
"Welcome home, sneak thief."
Kaito perked up, surprised. He let his feet carry him toward where the voice came from, finding Shinichi and Saguru in bed together. Both wearing pajamas, Saguru holding a book and having Shinichi's head resting on his lap. Saguru put the book aside and Shinichi sat up.
"You're here," Kaito's voice was soft and wondrous.
"Mh. I made it back just ten minutes ago myself," replied Shinichi, stretching himself. "I was surprised to find Saguru here too, to be honest?"
"I was too exhausted to come to the heist when my flight landed, but yes, after the weather finally cleared up, I made it here tonight too," Saguru's eyes were intense as he looked Kaito up and down. "Are you alright, Kaito? You look... rattled."
"It wasn't..." Kaito shed his disguise and ruffled his hair. "Didn't go as smooth as I'd wanted."
Saguru and Shinichi exchanged a concerned frown at that before they scooted apart enough to allow their soulmate to slip between them. Kaito made a small, content noise when he snuggled up to Saguru, wrapping his arms around the blonde's waist. Shinichi settled down behind him and wrapped his own arms around Kaito's own waist so he could bury his face between Kaito's shoulder blades. This content noise was much louder, because Kaito was finally surrounded by the safety and comfort of his soulmates from either side. Saguru's fingers entangled in his hair.
"Reschedule for tomorrow?" Saguru received a nod from Kaito. "Okay. Comfort today then."
His thumb caressed Kaito's cheek and Kaito melted a little bit. Shinichi kissed his neck, reminding him that he wasn't alone. Which was exactly what he needed right now.
~*~ The End ~*~
Author's note: See usually I'm all about the chase for the soulmates but I figured this time around, just a little comfort, Kaito deserves it~
