Sunsabi my beloved. I love writing this pair, I will never let it go. Wasabi never gets a love interest in canon (unlike Fred) and his love of 4 2 Sing makes it seem like setting him up with one of the members, Kwan-Sun, is the perfect conclusion for his storyline. If I ever write my own attempt at Season 4 it will definitely feature this ship. This story also mentions the family I created in my head for Wasabi, including his wonderful brothers and his not-so-wonderful parents.
Wesley "Wasabi" Ginger was not made for public consumption. He didn't like being the center of attention. He didn't want to be seen.
So it was a strange twist of fate that he ended up in a relationship with a famous popstar. Because people kind of pay attention to you if you're a nobody dating a popstar. His brothers had teased him about it, but they weren't the ones who were using him for fame.
The people using him for fame were the people who hadn't been friends with him in college. The people who only ever called him Wesley and never Wes or Wasabi. The people who hadn't done their part of the group project or who had made fun of his social anxiety or worse, who had made fun of his real friends. His real friends could handle themselves, of course, but it still made his blood boil that there were people trying to suck up to him now who in the past had trash-talked GoGo, Honey Lemon, or Fred.
"You have a fan club," Fred had said, trying to put a positive spin on the influx of attention.
"A fan club of phonies," GoGo said, voicing Wasabi's feelings on the matter.
"Yeah, they're all posers. Some of them aren't even fans of 4 2 Sing, they're just paying attention because Kwan-Sun is famous. Plus, not all of them are exactly… Fans of me."
He'd gotten hate mail from some 4 2 Sing fans who thought that he wasn't good enough for their idol. In response, he had completely removed himself from the internet. When some of those crazed fans found out where he lived, Kwan-Sun had sprung for a private little house away from the public eye. Sometimes Wasabi was a little scared to leave his new place. He didn't want to be seen. He didn't want to be the center of attention.
His friends and brothers were all worried about him, but not as much as Kwan-Sun. Every chance the musician got to be in San Fransokyo with his partner he was there.
One Sunday he got back to the house and found Wasabi with his head down on the kitchen table and silent tears streaming down his face. Kwan-Sun freaked out and rushed over, putting a hand on Wes's back.
"Wesley? Dear, what's wrong?"
"We're in a tabloid," Wasabi said quietly.
Kwan-Sun let out a sigh, "Yeah, it's annoying, but you knew that was going to happen when we started dating. Is that what's upsetting you? I'll find a way to make it go away."
Sometimes he did that, making grand promises that he could make all of Wasabi's problems disappear. He'd done that with the house, but not everything could be solved with a wave of a hand and a swipe of a credit card.
"No. I was prepared to be in the tabloids. It's worth it because I'm with you. But apparently, my dad was in the grocery store today, and he saw us on the cover of some magazine. I was never going to tell my parents about us because I don't like giving them insight into my personal life. They don't deserve to know who I am or who I'm with."
"He reached out?" Kwan-Sun guessed. Wasabi had his mom's phone number blocked, but not Aaron's. He was willing to give his dad a chance, a chance that Aaron didn't frequently take. Aaron honestly seemed happy to pretend his middle son didn't exist. Not anymore, apparently.
"He did. He said he read about our relationship, and though he doesn't completely approve he thinks that it's cool that I'm famous now, and he said he would try to keep mom from finding out."
"That's nice of him," Kwan-Sun said tentatively.
"I told him not to bother. You're not my secret, Kwan-Sun. I'm not ashamed of you and I don't need their approval. Her opinions on my relationships don't matter. I just… Sometimes it's hard knowing they'll never accept me."
Kwan-Sun began rubbing Wasabi's back.
"It isn't fair. It isn't fair that your parents can't see how wonderful you are. But a lot of people can. Me, your brothers, your friends. We all love and accept you. We always will. I love you, Wes. You're the most important thing in the world to me."
Wasabi beamed and leaned up to kiss Kwan-Sun's cheek.
"I love you too. You're the most important thing in the world to me, too. After Khary."
Kwan-Sun laughed.
"What about Damon?"
"Don't tell him I have a favorite brother."
"I won't. But I'm glad you have family that recognizes how amazing you are. And Ye Joon loves you too."
"I'm glad your brother likes me," Wasabi said with a contented hum.
"Everyone with half a brain likes you. You're wonderful."
"The tabloid people don't like me."
"Well, I said the people with half a brain. People are always going to write trashy tabloids, but we're going to show the world how in love we are. We're going to make everyone understand why we're the perfect pair."
When Kwan-Sun looked at him and made promises like that, Wasabi felt very seen. And this time, he didn't mind being seen.
