Role Reversal Rivalry
A Different Detective and Phantom Thief
Part 6: Magician & Magician
In the end, Shinichi did leave Kaitou KID to Kaito, who liked to use the persona to expose thieves and forgers, while Shinichi got to focus more of his attention on murder cases again. He'd never really dropped it, but being KID had taken so much of his attention that this passion of his had come quite short. The one thing the two of them still shared though was the magic.
"I can't believe those two made it all the way to Vegas," commented Hakuba.
"I can! Kaito has always been his father's son," Aoko smiled pleased.
"That may be true," Sonoko looked around before continuing. "But Shinichi...? I mean, yeah, we had a lot of fun, I loved playing his assistant, but that he'd make this his job?"
"Honestly, I'm glad for it," said Ran. "I think it's better for him than all the murders."
"I guess that's true," agreed Sonoko after a second. "He already stumbles into enough murders even in his off-time, if he'd become a cop, his whole life would just be murders. Urgh."
Someone calling loudly interrupted their conversation. "Ran-kun! We're here!"
They spotted Agasa and his associate Jii, both elderly men smiling and waving at them. The four teenagers hurried over to join them. First row seats. The stage was huge and it was pretty overwhelming to consider just how big this hall was. This was where Kaito and Shinichi had their shows nowadays. They really had come a very long way from high school.
"I know that Toichi-sama would be... incredibly proud..." Jii's voice wobbled.
Aoko's throat felt tight too. Yes. Toichi would be incredibly proud to see what had become of Kaito. A magician, who had worked hard for years to be where he was now – and he was now on a stage in Las Vegas, the world capital of showmanship. It was amazing. She wished he could see it.
"I think it's very nice of them to invite us all," said Ran once they all sat down.
"I suspect it's more than just a regular show," Saguru squinted as he looked up at the stage.
Mh. These detectives, always thinking too many different angles. Sonoko was just pleased to be in Vegas, having taken the family jet to fly herself and the others over here to enjoy the show. Las Vegas really was a city made for Sonoko. All the lights, the stars, the importance it carried.
"Ladies and gentlemen," Kaito's voice silence the room.
From the other side of the stage, Shinichi approached. "It's showtime!"
They made quite the pair. Not just romantically, but also as magicians. They wore matching suits, Kaito's was white with a blue shirt and silver ornaments on it, Shinichi's was black with golden ornaments and a red shirt. Like two sides of the same coin or something. Sonoko liked it.

"And that wraps up today's show!" Shinichi bowed deep.
"Oh, hold on!" Kaito interrupted just as the applause started. "I have one more trick!"
The audience started to cheer, because they wanted to see more. Shinichi raised one eyebrow. He was one for planning, Kaito was the more spontaneous one. Stunts like this, Shinichi was used to by now. The two had been on the stage for years now, had been on this very stage for the past year. On occasion, Kaito would be figuring out something new that he wanted to test in front of an audience. If it turned out good, they tended to integrate it into their next show.
"Oh really now? What kind of great trick do you have for us, Kaito?"
Shinichi smiled, one eyebrow raised as he watched. With a poof of smoke did a table appear in front of them. Kaito put down three big cups and one ball. Hiding the ball beneath a cup.
"Care to try your luck, Shinichi?" Kaito grinned as he shifted the cups around.
Well, that wasn't much of a magic trick, was it? Basic child's play. One of the very first things he had figured out from Toichi. Shinichi really hoped there was more to it than met the eye. The cups moved and moved, Shinichi never losing sight of the one the ball had been beneath.
"Well, which one will it be, Shinichi?"
Rolling his eyes, Shinichi tapped the top of the cup it had been beneath, knowing Kaito had already taken it out. Still, there was something more to come, he knew. Kaito made a show of first showing that the left and the right cup were empty, leaving the audience to believe it had to indeed be the one Shinichi had tapped. And when he removed the cup... there was a black box beneath.
"I got one more trick," Kaito grinned, softly, tapping the box. "Care to take a look?"
"Kaito-" Shinichi's voice trailed off.
Opening the box, Shinichi looked at the ring inside. White-gold, simple, with a single stone. A sapphire, with the same cut as Pandora's; when they had finally found the blasted supposedly cursed gem and used it to lure out the Black Organization, leading to Snake's arrest. It had been so pretty but unassuming. No more special than any other gem Shinichi had seen over the years. Still, they couldn't be too careful, even though neither believed in the immortality nonsense.
"Kudou Shinichi," Kaito went down on one knee. "We've been partners for five years now, both on the stage and off the stage. I was wondering... Would you like to make that a long-term deal?"
Doves flew up all around them, the crowd was squealing and gasping. What an absolute dork. Shinichi would hate being put on the spot like that, if the two of them hadn't talked about marriage for a while now. Planning their future together. Knowing that Shinichi would say yes, Kaito went all out on the proposal. This... did explain why he had invited their best friends.
"I..." Shinichi's throat felt tight regardless. "Yes. Yes, of course, you dork."
Kaito whooped and wrapped his arms around Shinichi's waist, lifting him up and whirling him around. Before putting him down, Kaito earned himself a kiss. The crowd cheered louder than Shinichi had ever heard before. Both their cheeks were flushed and their eyes were sparkling by the time they let go of each other. Together, they turned to face the crowd and bowed.

"I can't believe you finally decided to make an honest man out of Kudou-kun!" Aoko laughed, slapping Kaito rather hard on the back. "And I can't believe you said yes, Kudou-kun. You could do so much better than BaKaito, I'm sure of it."
"Ahoko!" Kaito made an enraged noise while looking like a wounded puppy. "Meanie!"
"I, for my part, am very happy for the both of you," Ran smiled warmly at them both.
"And I, for my part, expect the wedding to be spectacular," Sonoko narrowed her eyes. "And the bridesmaids dresses to be beautiful and compliment me. Or groomsmaids. Whatever."
"Of course you do," Shinichi chuckled softly. "We'll see about those. Honestly, we were thinking of handing over all planning to our mothers."
"Yes, they have been going rabid over it for weeks now," Kaito laughed as he sat down next to Shinichi, wrapping his arms around his now fiance. "That way they can't harass us over not living up to their standard and they can have fun with it."
"Good compromise," praised Saguru with a short nod.
"Okay, now, how long are you guys going to stay here?" asked Shinichi.
"The whole weekend, flight back on Sunday," replied Sonoko. "And I expect to be shown everything. This city is dazzling, I have to see everything!"
"We made a couple plans," Kaito smiled reassuringly. "We figured some sights that need to be seen, casinos to visit, shows that you can't miss! A lot to cram into one weekend, but we will manage!"
He interlaced his hands with Shinichi's, looking at the other magician. There would be enough time to celebrate their engagement one on one, once their friends left. For now, they got to enjoy their company. They saw their best friends so rarely, now that they lived all the way in the US. But there were opportunities here, for a magician, that they hadn't had at home.

Kaito entered their penthouse suite in the hotel they were currently holding their show at, carrying take-out. When he found his fiance, Shinichi was leaning over the table, a thoughtful frown on his face. Working another case? Because, aside from magicians, another thing Las Vegas had plenty of? Crooks, thieves and also murderers. Both of them still got to flex their detective skills plenty.
"Tough case?" asked Kaito.
He put the take-out down on the free space on the table before rounding it so he could be with Shinichi. Sitting down with him, Kaito wrapped his arms around Shinichi's shoulders. That was not a case file though. That was their upcoming tour poster.
"You could say that," Shinichi chuckled and leaned back against him. "I was just thinking..."
"Thinking about what exactly?" Kaito rested his chin on Shinichi's shoulder.
"If we will continue being K&K... or, rather, if we'll continue being Kuroba and Kudou," Shinichi tilted his head back, leaning into Kaito. "I was thinking... of taking your name."
Oh. Somehow, Kaito hadn't even considered that. But now that he thought about it, Kuroba, that was the name that had given Shinichi magic. Kuroba Toichi. Heh. Toichi would love that, wouldn't he? Shinichi becoming a Kuroba. Kaito hid his grin in Shinichi's shoulder.
"What? Got nothing to say to that?"
"No, no, I just..." Kaito kissed Shinichi's neck softly. "I like that. Kuroba & Kuroba."
"Also, it has the added bonus of probably driving my mother mad," Shinichi smirked.
"Oh yeah, for sure," Kaito laughed. "Okay, I like that, a lot."

Their wedding was small, despite their mothers' protests. All they wanted were their family and friends, even though – or perhaps because – they were both moderately famous by now. They both didn't want the world to be a part of it, when all that mattered was that it was them. Them and the people they cared about. And for their honeymoon, they went to London. Shinichi got a Holmes tour and got to geek out, Kaito got to liberate some artifacts from the British Museum.
"How are you feeling, Mister Kuroba?"
Kaito grinned as he trailed kisses down his husband's neck. Shinichi huffed, as he always did when being called Kuroba. It was still so new to him, to be named that. With a small smile of his own did Shinichi roll over, pinning Kaito beneath himself to kiss.
"Feeling very good, Mister Kuroba," declared Shinichi with a laugh.
"I think we should go on tour in Egypt. Maybe Greece," stated Kaito all of a sudden.
"Oh, really?" Shinichi raised one eyebrow. "Nothing to do with the extra luggage?"
He side-eyed the stolen artifacts in the corner. How those got to the countries they belonged to, that was up to Shinichi, he did not want a hand in this. Knowing his husband, they would just magically appear in the museums they should be displayed in.
"Wha—at?" Kaito gasped, grasping his own heart. "I just thought it'd be nice to look at the pyramids with my hubby. Show you that old ruin in Greece that you fancy."
Shinichi smiled faintly. "Sure we could go there. I do want to see... more, with our show."
The plan had never been to stay in Vegas; it was a great way to get into the business, but now that people from all over the world came to see the Kurobas? It was time for them to go see the world.
