Summary: Shinichi was mortified when he got hurt during a case, again. It was his first major injury ever since him and Kaito had gotten together and he dreaded telling his boyfriend about this.
Hospitalized Heisei Holmes II
Afternoon Hospital Visits
Shinichi groaned in frustration and let his head fall against the wall behind him. He lifted one hand up to press against his stomach. When he lifted it again, it came back red. Damn it.
"I can't believe it's a stab-wound. Again."
The last time he'd gotten stabbed, he had ended up in the hospital, missing out on a very exciting heist and gaining a boyfriend in the aftermath. So, all in all, the last stab-wound had worked out well for him. However, he also had promised Kaito to watch out. No more reckless stunts. Or at the very least less reckless stunts. And so far, he had been able to keep that promise! No stab-wounds, shot-wounds, not even gotten drugged by anyone (he has been told by a very disturbed Ran that this is not something he should be proud of, this ought to be the norm).
"I'm never going to live this down," Shinichi glared at his bloodied hand, like it was at fault.
Why had he gone and chased the suspect anyway? Sure, he was young and his legs were very strong, so he could easily outrun the police. Still, one would think he'd learn. At one point.
Everything became a little blurry and the last thing he saw was a blob that was vaguely Takagi-shaped, handcuffing the suspect. Well, at least he wasn't going to bleed out in the alley.

When Shinichi next came to it, it was to the dull, gray ceiling of a hospital room above him and the beeping of machines next to him. No. Couldn't it have at least just been a minor stab-wound? Something one could put a band-aid on and that was it?
"Shinichi," Ran pushed her head into his field of vision. "You're awake."
"Yes, awake and alert," Shinichi grunted, trying to look around. "...Does he know...?"
A scowl spread over Ran's face and she crossed her arms. "Of course does Kuroba-kun know! What, did you expect me to keep your stab-wound a secret from your boyfriend?"
"I mean..." Shinichi shrugged, a little helpless. "I had hoped so? Just, getting this taken care of and then get released and be home before he gets back from classes?"
Ran made an exasperated noise at that. "No. You. You have told enough lies over the years, don't you think? I'm not keeping such secrets for you, especially not when it's about your health."
Shinichi winced at that, which sent a jolt of pain through his side. Ever since he'd come clean to Ran and told her everything about Conan and the Black Organization, she had absolutely perfected guilt-tripping him. And he deserved it. He knew that. But still, this was different.
"Where is he?" Shinichi looked around the room as much as he could. "I... would have expected him to be here, if he knows about it. Is he really that mad...?"
The look on Ran's face softened at that and she shook her head slowly. "No, of course he's not mad enough to stay away. He was going stir-crazy cooped up in this tiny hospital room, doing nothing but waiting. Sonoko took mercy on him and took him outside. They went to the cafeteria to get hot chocolate and a snack. We've been here for nearly five hours, waiting for you to wake up."
"Five hours?" Shinichi frowned surprised. "All three of you?"
"Nakamori-san and Hakuba-san came by for a while, bringing Kuroba-kun a lunch. Kazuha-chan has called me a total of seven times, on behalf of Hattori-kun, who seems very worried. The children wanted to come by too, but I... didn't think it was good seeing you all out of it like that. I promised to call them when you're awake and can receive visitors."
Closing his eyes, Shinichi laid back down. Giving his stab-wound the chance to relax. Visitors. The second worst part of having to be in the hospital. The door opened and Shinichi could hear Kaito and Sonoko bickering and laughing. Those two, they had hit it off frustratingly well. Now, Sonoko was over all the time, hogging Shinichi's boyfriend. Kaito was teaching her magic, she had commissioned multiple costumes to play the part of Kaito's assistant, because every great magician needed a fabulous assistant, according to her.
The conversation paused as soon as they noticed Shinichi. "Shin-chan! You're awake!"
Half a second later and he had Kaito latching onto his side, arms wrapped around his shoulders and hugging him as tight as he could without aggravating Shinichi's injuries. With a lopsided smile did Shinichi wrap his own arms around Kaito, pulling him closer.
"I'm awake," Shinichi confirmed after a moment.
"About time," Sonoko chided him, glaring – though he could see the worry. "Took you long enough. It's rude to let people wait that long, you know."
"Well, you're freed from your duties now," offered Shinichi. "You can go home."
Sonoko opened her mouth to protest, but Ran took her hand and shook her head. "I think Shinichi needs some more rest. We can come back later. And we can update the others."
She exchanged a smile with Shinichi before leading Sonoko out of the room, leaving Shinichi all alone with Kaito. When Kaito let go of him and leaned back some, putting space between them, the look on Kaito's face was a horrible mixture of disappointment, frustration and hurt.
"You promised to be more careful," Kaito's voice cracked a little.
Shinichi couldn't help but flinch. Embarrassed and guilty. A weird combination of feelings for Shinichi. Reaching out, he took Kaito's hand, linking their fingers. He knew Kaito liked holding hands. His thumb caressed the back of Kaito's hand in soft circles.
"I just..." Shinichi paused. "It's instinct. I see the bad guy run, I run after him."
"And I... get it," Kaito heaved a sigh. "I just... Do you know how much I worry about you, Shin?"
Making a small noise, Shinichi leaned forward to rest his forehead against Kaito's shoulder. "I do. I know how much I worry about you during heists. I just... don't do well with sitting around."
Kaito huffed and swatted at Shinichi's arm. "Says the one who made me sit around for hours, waiting for him to wake up. Double-standard much, Great Detective?"
Shinichi tilted his head to look up at Kaito, trying for his most innocent and lovable expression. "I'm sorry. What can I do to make it up to you?"
"Weekend getaway. Just you and me," Kaito's eyes sparkled. "There's this very shiny jewel on display in Paris. You and I should really go there for a weekend."
Well, Shinichi should have guessed that. He offered a half-smirk at that and nodded. Fine then. He could never deny Kaito and he had a weakness for Kaito's heist. But for now, he just wanted to rest, here, with Kaito. Adjusting himself, he got more comfortable to lean against Kaito.
~*~ The End ~*~
Author's note: Not gonna lie, the request for a sequel to this one baffled me a little bit and I didn't entirely know what to do with that. I hope the result turned out satisfactory though ;D
