A few weeks passed. Joe remained sad and in fact became sadder during this time, even though he still did his best to enjoy hanging out with everyone. Especially his friends, who visited him a few more times after they heard the news. A sleepover was even arranged to help cheer Joe up, with Dennis joining them (but not Winnie, they liked her but they were at the age where having a sleepover with a girl was awkward; she didn't mind).
Joe also decided to distract himself a bit by visiting the Dracula family's floor, at least by visiting Dennis's room. It turned out to be a good idea, he liked playing with Dennis and watching TV in his room and as long as he didn't go too near the windows he didn't have any panic attacks.
But all that didn't stop him from being miserable during the beginning of the sixth week. He stopped wanting to play as much, not being able to keep himself from thinking about his parents. Everyone else saw this concernedly, and were afraid that Joe might go into a depression. So they decided to try comforting him.
"You know, no matter what happens you'll always have the memories of your parents. I don't know my mom at all." Dracula said while they were relaxing in the lobby.
"Wait, you mean vampa never even told you about her like you told me about mom?" Mavis asked with shock.
"You forget, I've always had a strained relationship with dad until Dennisovich's fifth birthday. Especially thanks to his strict parenting."
"Okay, so I may have been too harsh towards you but this was centuries ago." Vlad muttered before cringing. "However I was wrong to not tell you about your mother, it's just...there's a dark reason why I never wanted to talk about her."
"Don't tell me she was murdered by humans too?" Johnny guessed with disgust. "I mean is this family ever going to be safe from that?"
"Uh, we are now." Mavis smirked.
"Oh yeah...never mind."
"I'm afraid you're right Johnny, that is what happened to her." Vlad nodded. "And I...er...was so furious by it that...I took my rage out on them."
"You mean you killed them?" Dracula said with shock.
"No...worse." Vlad looked away, knowing that all of them were going to be furious. "In fact you know those humans personally: they're now Bela and the other bat monsters."
"You turned them into those things?" Wayne was shocked.
"Yes, while they were still humans and sleeping I...sucked out their souls and injected my venom into them." Vlad admitted. "You see once a soul is sucked out it goes straight to the afterlife, so I wanted to punish them by forcing them to watch their bodies being used to do my bidding."
"Okay, that is seriously not cool!" Frank said angrily.
"Yeah, in fact it's disgusting!" Murray snapped.
"Uh, excuse me, didn't you used to curse people?" Griffin pointed out.
"Well...okay, the truth is I exaggerated that." Murray winced sheepishly. "I just wanted to make myself seem as scary and powerful as you guys, especially back when we were still on the run from humans. You see Anubis forbid all us mummies from punishing humans, so we were only allowed to unleash minor curses in self-defense."
"Who?" Vlad said.
"Anubis, the Egyptian god of the dead. Mummies, mummification, all that." Johnny explained. "I learned about at least the main Egyptian gods when I visited Cairo years ago. In fact I also learned that the Egyptian gods forbid humans from punishing other humans in general."
"Exactly. The worst I ever did was giving unpleasant but non-fatal diseases to grave robbers in hopes that it would scare them away." Murray said. "Otherwise I mostly stuck with locusts, minor sandstorms, that sort of thing. Certainly nothing close to Vlad's level."
"I know, what I did was wrong. And if I hadn't done it then Dennis and Winnie wouldn't have been in danger and Johnny wouldn't have almost been killed." Vlad agreed apologetically.
"Well...actually Bela hurting Winnie was what triggered my vampire powers which led to me being able to stay in the hotel." Dennis said. "So everything worked out anyway."
Everyone sat silently as they thought about that. Truthfully Dennis did have a point so they decided to forgive Vlad, especially since he did that horrible act thousands of years ago.
"Say, vampa, how about you have a father-son talk with dad and finally tell him about his mom?" Mavis suggested.
"I think that's a wonderful idea." Vlad smiled.
"I would like to finally hear about her." Dracula agreed.
So they left to do so.
"Dennis...did you want to stay in the hotel even before you got your powers?" Mavis asked.
"Er...yeah, almost more than anything." Dennis admitted. "I just didn't say anything because I knew you only decided to move to Santa Cruz for my own good."
"You still should have told me how you felt, your opinions matter to me." Mavis said.
"I know...I will next time." Dennis promised.
"Good. And your opinions matter to me too Johnny." Mavis then smirked.
"Heh, right." Johnny rubbed the back of his head sheepishly. "Okay, the truth is the hotel is the first place I ever truly felt at home. I mean...why do you think I left Santa Cruz to begin with? The fact is, it stopped being home the moment all my foster brothers were adopted."
Mavis went over to hug him.
"We'll never move out, I promise." She said.
A few more days passed, and it was now the night before the last day of the sixth week. Joe had just fallen asleep a few hours ago, finding it hard to fall asleep due to knowing what was going to happen the next day.
"Son...don't feel bad..." A male voice said. "We're sorry we can't stay with you...but all this isn't your fault."
"You have no reason to feel guilty...about us being taken off life support." A female voice said. "We won't think badly of you if you decide to."
Joe slept peacefully during the rest of the night.
