Once the thieves arrived, according to the locusts, Dracula gave Johnny enough money to get the thieves to trust him. After a drive through the forest Johnny walked through the town and kept an eye out for the thieves. He saw lots of dark-haired men with blue eyes, but none smelled like pine so he refrained from talking to them.
Then he saw three guys sitting at a cafe. One was a dark-haired man with blue eyes...and Johnny could smell pine. Plus another guy was wearing an ankh necklace, though whether it was fake or an artifact Johnny couldn't tell.
"Hey man, cool necklace." Johnny smiled as he walked up to them.
"Thanks, got this and more from a secret location. In fact we're looking to sell more cool items, any suggestions on where we should start?" The man asked.
"Well I'm actually looking to buy." Johnny smirked as he brought out the thick wad of cash Dracula gave him.
"Great, but not here and not now. We prefer to do our business in private." Amina's ex said cooly.
"No prob. How about the forest later tonight? Few people go near it. Just meet me behind this cafe." Johnny said.
"That works. We'll see you tonight then."
"See ya."
Johnny left and headed back to the hotel, grinning about the plan having worked. Dracula and the others grinned too upon learning this, knowing that soon the artifacts will be returned, the thieves arrested, and Amina vindicated.
Later that night, the thieves arrived with all the artifacts - they only stole the ones they could easily carry - but Johnny of course stayed hidden behind the trees with Mavis and Amina. The only ones in the open were Dracula and Murray.
"Hey, who are you?" The third thief asked.
"Count Dracula and his friend Murray the mummy." Dracula grinned, showing off his fangs.
Two of the thieves paled and drew back, realizing that they had been tricked, but Amina's ex glared.
"Don't think you're going to catch us!" He declared as he started to shoot his gun at them. "We knew that monsters lived nearby so we came prepared!"
The other two thieves recovered and also drew out guns. They even drew out stakes and threw them, but of course Dracula dodged them all by turning into a bat. Murray dodged them too, sort of. His bandages did get a few holes, but otherwise he was unharmed.
"Seriously? None of that stuff can hurt me." Murray glared before turning to the ex. "And you! I heard about you, how could you take advantage of anyone for just some petty cash?"
"Oh please, Amina should've known better." The ex laughed. "No guy will ever want to be with her unless they wanted something from her."
"That's not true! There are plenty of great guys out there who would love to be her friend! And any guy would be lucky to become her boyfriend!" Murray snapped, growing angrier.
Amina blushed.
"Ah why should I care what you think, you're just a dried out old man in dirty bandages." The ex scoffed.
"I take a dry-clean bath every night dude." Murray deadpanned.
"And he's not just a dried out old man!" Amina automatically snapped angrily, leaving the cover of the trees. "He's sweet, fun, and actually has a bigger heart than you do!"
She then froze with horror as the ex glared at her and lifted his gun. Before she could do anything, he shot her.
"AMINA!" Murray cried, horrified, as he suddenly zinged for her; furious, he punched the ex in the face knocking him out.
Johnny, Mavis, and Dracula - who had easily beaten the other two thieves - were also horrified.
Murray rushed over to Amina and gently lifted her.
"Oh Amina no..." He started to sob, noticing that the bullet wound was in a fatal spot.
"Murray..." Amina said weakly. "I love you."
Despite the fact that Amina was dying, Murray couldn't help smiling a little.
"I love you too." He said.
"If...if I need to become a monster to stay with you...I'm fine with it..." Amina said before dying.
Murray cradled her crying, not believing his bad luck. He finally zings with someone and she loves him back, only for her to die before they could even go on one date.
Johnny and Mavis also started to shed tears, and Dracula went up to Murray to comfortingly place a hand on his shoulder.
"I'm so sorry Murray." Dracula choked.
Murray was crying too hard to say anything, but he appreciated Dracula's compassion. Especially since he knew why Dracula was taking this almost as hard as he was.
Then suddenly, a jackal-headed Egyptian appeared in a slow flash of light!
"Anubis?" Murray was surprised.
"This is Anubis?" Dracula said with surprise.
"Yup." Anubis smiled. "Quite a few of us have animals heads. I know, it's a bit of a surprise when you first hear about us. Now, where did I...ah, here it is."
He pulled a feather out of a pocket.
"What is that?" Mavis asked.
"It's...the Feather of Truth right? I read something about that when I was visiting Egypt." Johnny remembered.
"That's right." Anubis nodded before holding the feather over Amina; it suddenly glowed, to everyone else's surprise. "Good, I was hoping Amina would be worthy enough."
He then used his staff on Amina. She glowed for a moment, and when she stopped she was a mummy still wearing her outfit!
"Wha-?" Johnny was shocked.
Amina then started to stir!
"Huh...?" She woke up and saw her hands. "I'm a mummy?"
"Well, how else do you think living mummies come into existence?" Anubis chuckled. "They're simply Egyptians who have been given a second chance at life. I'll explain more when we get back to the hotel, first these three should be taken cared of." He pointed to the thieves.
"Right." Mavis called the cops since Amina was still recovering.
Once the cops arrived and arrested the thieves, everyone else headed back to the hotel.
"Amina?" Hana gasped, horrified. "You- What happened?"
"Oh I got killed defending Murray and Anubis brought me back." Amina shrugged, smiling.
"You're...happy about being a mummy?" Hana raised an eyebrow. "I mean I'm glad you're alive again - sorta - but-"
"Well, there's s special reason." Amina smiled at Murray, who smiled back.
Getting it, Hana cheered and hugged Amina.
"I always knew you'd find the right guy one day." She said; she then pulled away, remembering: "Anubis brought you back?"
"That's right." Anubis smiled as he showed himself.
Hana jumped back a bit. The other monsters dropped their mouths open.
"Let me explain: I've always felt sorry for good people who died prematurely, that is before they could reach old age or even middle age, but of course bringing the dead back to life was out of the question." Anubis said. "So as a compromise I brought back those who died through a selfless act as living mummies, so that they could have a second chance at life in a way. Amina I brought back because she was willing to help catch the thieves, and even defended Murray when she could've stayed safe without anyone blaming her. Plus for Murray's sake."
"So if all living mummies had died through a selfless act-" Frank turned to Murray; so did everyone else.
"Um...okay the truth is...I don't remember my human life." Murray rubbed the back of his head awkwardly.
"That's only because you received a harsh blow to the head before you died, giving you amnesia." Anubis explained.
"Ah...well, despite the amnesia I do remember my Egyptian name. I just started going with Murray a long time ago because it was easier to pronounce." Murray chuckled.
"Really? What's your Egyptian name?" Wayne asked.
"Murtadanis." Murray shrugged. "I think it means 'chosen-friend' in Egyptian."
"Murray is easier to pronounce." Griffin chuckled.
Then everyone noticed Amina and Hana gaping at Murray.
"What?" Murray asked.
"Murtadanis?" Amina gasped. "That was the name of the Egyptian noble who sacrificed his life for a farmer boy!"
Everyone else widened their eyes.
"Yeah, Amina told me the story after the farmer boy's mummy and possessions were delivered to the museum." Hana nodded. "His life was recorded on the walls, which were translated and copied down. Apparently Murtadanis was taking a walk by the Nile when he saw the farmer boy - Shafiq I think his name was - trying to save his dog from crocodiles. Murtadanis rushed into the river to hold back the crocodiles so that Shafiq and his dog could escape, but one of the crocodiles hit him on the head with its tail. That knocked out Murtadanis, allowing the crocodiles to drown him-" She stopped, wincing in Murray's direction.
Murray widened his eyes further.
"I-I remember now..." He said.
"That is exactly what happened to you." Anubis confirmed. "However Shafiq rushed for help, allowing some soldiers to drive away the crocodiles and pull you out of the river before you could be eaten. But it didn't change the fact that you died."
"Well...thank goodness for that..." Murray muttered as he winced. "I mean I don't regret saving Shafiq, but...geez, I drowned?"
Anubis nodded. Everyone else looked touched by the story.
"Wait...what happened to Shafiq?" Murray asked.
"Well, he did feel really bad about what happened to you, and insisted even then that the story of you saving him be included as part of his life story in his future tomb so that everyone would learn of your selflessness." Anubis said. "Otherwise he lived a happy life, and eventually gained a family of his own. He even made it to old age. Well, 'old' for that time era anyway." He then chuckled.
"Gee...since I got that new home underground - that's where living mummies live -" Murray explained to the humans before continuing: "I've never really been through the possessions in my tomb. I guess I was uncomfortable about learning how I died...and maybe also uncomfortable with being reminded that I used to be a human, given how humans treated us back then. I don't use my old things anymore, so maybe it's time I donate them to the museum. Near Shafiq's exhibit if possible."
"I think that's a really nice idea." Amina smiled.
