A/N: I do not own Youjo Senki or Black Clover or any of its characters. This is my second fic and it's been a while since I last write something so my writing skill has become VERY rusty. So I thought hey, maybe I should write another story, improve my writing skill and all. If you ever heard of me (which I don't think so) I used to have an editor but he's been busy with his own life and that's one of the reasons why I did not continue my first story anymore.
But, I figure maybe I should have more self-confidence in myself so I decided to write again. I apologize for any grammar mistakes in advance.
Hey Tsar! I don't know if you will get the notification but I've finally written something without your guidance. Are you proud of me now :3
It was a long bloody war. After many battles and deaths, the war had finally over at the cost of the Empire's defeat. Despite winning countless battles, in the end, the Empire couldn't win in the attrition war against the whole world. Instead of coming to terms with the Empire, the world decided to condemn them. In the Treaty of Versailles, the Empire received harsh procedures of disarmaments and demanded a shedload of money for war reparations that would literally disable the country's economy. Though, what say do they have now that they were defeated.
Now that the once-mighty Empire had been defeated, it was time to enact punishment on the high-ranking officers for their war crimes under international law.
Unfortunately, Tanya was one of the high-ranking officers that will be put on trial. She by no means broke any international laws, at least directly. However, the prosecutors insisted to hammered down their so-called 'justice' at the Devil of the Rhine.
The trial was known as Arene War Crime Trial.
(A/N: Basically this is a trial about Tanya's action in the EP 8 where she killed civilians/partisans and burned the city)
Despite not being in a favorable position, Tanya managed to justify her action, saying that if the City of Arene fell, so too the Imperial Army's supply lines. Plus, she clarified that she did not violate the International Laws of War in any way. The armed insurgent citizens didn't wear uniforms. Hence, they were irregular combatants. Since it wasn't an army, and since they weren't soldiers, they were denied their right as prisoners in international laws.
She even insisted that she did her duty as a soldier at that time by demanding the release of all Imperial citizens in accordance with Article 26, Clause 3 of the Wartime Combat Treaty. To backed up her claim, she submitted a video recording of the militia's response to the Imperial Army's second offer to surrender... by shooting pro-Empire citizens that tried to escape to death. Thus proving her defense that there were no captives nor citizens in the city of Arene during the event.
Despite managing to defend herself in the trial by cleverly arguing the prosecutors' accusations with her own logic and evidence, she was still not convinced if she was fully in a clear yet. There were too many people who held grudges against her and that might even sway the judges' verdict. The thesis that she wrote during her time at the War College, 'The Devil's Plan' which did not violate any international laws of war did not help her reputation at all.
Tonight, Major Tanya von Degurechaff will receive her verdict whether or not she's guilty or innocent, whether or not she lives or dies. Running away wasn't an option now that the Devil of the Rhine's face was now known to the entire world via newspapers. If she were to be completely honest, the probability of her winning this trial was pretty high. However, with her trial in the center of attention for the entire world, she could no longer live peacefully even if she were to be found innocent. It's the bitter fact that she had to swallow. There's nothing she can do except curse at the one who put her in this kind of situation in the first place, Being X.
Suddenly, a knocking sound came from the door. "Major Tanya von Degurechaff, it's time."
The time had finally come. With the MP (Military Police) from the newly formed League of Nations had arrived to escort her, she readied herself. Tanya took one last look at herself in the mirror. One needs to keep up the appearance. A little girl donning in uniform with the Silver Wing Assault Badge on her chest was quite the sight after all.
Tanya opened the door, "Forgive me if I took too much... time?"
Tanya noticed something was amiss. The MP's eyes who came to escort her to the Supreme Court were unnaturally glowing gold. Those eyes reminded her of someone unpleasant.
She instinctively knew, that this guy somehow had the blessing of Being X. If he's hostile, does that mean he's another lunatic like Mary Sue?
"Whoever you are, back off-"
"We do not have much time." said the MP.
What happened left Tanya completely shocked. That voice, that tone, she's familiar with it. It's definitely that bastard! "BEING X!"
Before she could even assume a fighting position, the possessed MP handed her something that she was completely familiar with. It was her Computation Orb Type 95. The orb was confiscated by the Allies when the Empire surrendered and it was the last time she ever saw it.
Perplexed, she questioned him, "Why are you giving this to me?"
"Because you will need it. The current situation is grim."
"... Huh? What bullsh-" Before she could even express her disgust, the MP suddenly got stabbed by something akin to a giant claw, leaving large holes in his stomach. As the MP's body fall to the floor, Tanya managed to witness the culprit behind the stabbing. It was a horrifying scene.
"Who... No, what are you?"
An entity that she can only describe as 'Demon' simply grinned at her with full of malice.
"Are you the envoy of the False God?"
Tanya couldn't help but froze at where she stood. Things were escalating way too quickly for her rational brain to digest. Why did Being X give her the Type 95? Who was this demonic being in front of her? What does this demon want from her? Why couldn't she move? Is it magic or simply fear?
Wait... fear? Was she about to be taken over by fear? Her? What kind of sick joke was that. She's the White Silver, a war hero of the Empire. To think a single demon had her shaken for a brief moment, what an utter embarrassment. If her subordinates from the 203rd Aerial Mage Battalion had ever seen her in such state, she would've been a laughing stock.
"Envoy of the False God, hand me over the key. In return, I shall kill you painlessly." The demon threatened her.
Tanya chuckled nervously, "I'm sorry, your proposal doesn't sound very lucrative for me at all."
Despite managing to gather her wits together, all she did was putting up a front. Things had gotten sour now that she knew there was no room for negotiation. She took a quick glance at the MP's lifeless body. There was a luger pistol on the holster, the only weapon in this room. In order to retrieve it, she needed an opening. Time wasn't exactly on her side thus, she had to make her own opportunity.
"Also, I'm afraid that I don't have the key that you're asking for," said Tanya trying to distract it.
"What are you talking about? It's that orb on your neck-"
Opening!
She infused mana into her legs to physically enhanced it and quickly reached the gun while deploying an active barrier for an upcoming attack. As predicted, the demon didn't stay still and swoop in for a slash. A loud clang can be heard as the demon's claws made contact with Tanya's barrier. To her surprise, her barrier that can withstand 40 mm was on the verge of breaking from that single attack. Nevertheless, this was no time for her to be shocked.
She grabbed the luger and imbued it with magic formula. Usually, one had to enchant the rounds first to get the maximum effect but she had no time for that. Still, the damage it can deal was nothing to scoff at. Due to their close distance, Tanya re-strengthened her active barrier and pulled the trigger at point-blank range. An explosion ensued, engulfing both Tanya and the demon.
Thankfully, due to her barrier, she survived the explosion almost unscathed. However, she heard a growl beyond the smoke.
It didn't take a genius to tell her that it wasn't dead yet. With no hesitation, she fired every bullet that she have at the demon, emptying the magazine. Even with all of that, it wasn't enough to finish the demon off as it launched itself towards Tanya with its' claws ready to slice her.
With her quick reflex, she rolled to the side, barely escaping death.
Damn it! Here I was hoping to finish it off with those formula rounds, but that thing is still alive after receiving that much damage?! What kind of monster am I facing right now?!
A monster capable of withstanding exploding formula and having the strength to shred her barrier with a single stroke, it's clear to say that the situation was looking grim for Tanya. With her escape route being blocked off by that demon, her only option was close-quarter combat. Tanya imbued her arms with mana, creating sharp magic blades. If that demon can withstand the magic blades that can cut through a plane into two, she's certainly doomed.
The two found themselves in a standoff with both sides refusing to take the initiative. Does that mean the demon actually found her magic blades as a threat? Tanya can only hope that was the case.
Out of the blue, the computation orb on her neck started to glow. A sense of confusion started to take over Tanya when suddenly she received divine revelation from Being X.
"Child, do not let the key fall into their hand. Otherwise, it would spark the damnation for this world. And as for you, mere Middle-class Demon, you shall not lay a single finger on this child."
Suddenly, golden chains manifested themselves out of nowhere and bound the demon, thus restricting its movement.
"Release me, False God! You're nothing but an arrogant angel that received God's authority!"
False God? Angel? God's authority? Tanya couldn't help herself but be flustered with the current situation. Was there some kind of event that took place behind the scene that she was unaware of?
"Oi, Being X! What kind of mess did you create that I somehow got roped together with the situation?!"
"Child, my chains cannot hold that demon for much longer. For now, I shall transfer you to that world."
Out of nowhere, a magic circle appeared below Tanya's feet. Sensing trouble, she attempted to make a run for it. Little did she know, she was also chained by the golden chains. "Bastard!! Let me go! What scheme are you getting me into!"
"It is for your own good. It might be difficult to be in contact with you anymore, but we shall meet again, little one."
A ray of light erupted below her feet, it was so bright that would even put flashbang to shame. With her last ounce of energy, she yelled with all her might,
"CURSE YOU BEING X!!!"
"... Where am I?" muttered the bewildered White Silver. Before she knew it, she was standing in the middle of a crowded street market. Suddenly, she got pushed around by the people walking by since she was in the way. Tanya managed to slip her way out from the crowd and took a breather beside the street. It took her a minute to regain her wits back and analyze her surrounding.
From what she got, it appeared that she's currently in a medieval era based on the structure of the buildings around her surrounding. Did Being X send her back in time or what? As she looked up into the sky, her eyes widened. People flying around with their brooms were all over in the sky.
A small groan came out from her mouth, "What kind of fantasy setting is this?"
Perhaps she was really sent back in time seeing that magic exists here? But, in the Empire's history, not many people can freely use magic until the Industrial Revolution. That left Tanya with only one explanation, she got transported to another world. After all, she did recall Being X said that he will transfer her to 'that' world.
I guess this is 'that' world. Tanya thought to herself. Will she be able to return to her previous world? Does this mean she won't ever meet her subordinates anymore? She closed her eyes for a brief moment, reminiscing about her subordinates whom she fought with for a long time before getting a hold of herself. This wasn't the time to be sentimental. Currently, she's in unknown territory, proceeding with caution was a must. For now, she had to gather intels about this place.
Realizing that she actually attracted some unwanted attention due to her uniform, she walked away towards a nearby alley. There, she cast an optical illusion formula on herself so that people won't notice her presence at all. With that, she's all set.
Fortunately for her, despite being from another world, she can understand the townfolk's language since they spoke in Japanese. Shocking since the architect's structure in this city clearly based on European architecture. However, she failed to comprehend the writing here. Every signboard and poster that she encountered, she failed to understand it. Well, hoping for the writing to be readable for her was probably asking too much. After all, Being X wasn't pleased whenever she's having an easy time.
From what she found out after a few hours of gathering information. Apparently, this place was called the Clover Kingdom. Personally, it's a pretty dumb name for a kingdom. Nonetheless, who was she to say about such a thing to the founder of this kingdom. She had no beef against him. Aside from that, it seemed that she was in the capital of this Kingdom from what she heard from the merchants.
However, most importantly, the civilization here was heavily reliant on magic. Almost everyone around here walked around with some sort of book on their holster. It turned out those books were called grimoires and they were magical items that greatly enhance the user's ability to use magic. Interestingly enough, she learned that a mage cannot use another person's grimoire and the grimoire will disintegrate as its owner dies. When she thought about it, grimoire was pretty similar to a computation orb.
Sadly, that's all she managed to gather. More intel was needed for her to come up with an appropriate plan to adjust herself to this new society. Thus, she made up her mind to visit a nearby red-light district, a place where idiots waste their money and please their dirty desire, but at the same time, it's the center of intelligence network. It's always been like that no matter what world or era you were in. There're ought to be one red light district somewhere in this capital, Tanya's sure of it. Though, even if there was, she had no way to find it in this unknown city.
After a brief moment of thinking, Tanya decided to walk deeper into the alley in hopes to find the inner-city slumps. If she can get someone from there to guide her, then finding a red light district should be a piece of cake. After all, beggars tend to always know the layout of the city better than the residents.
As she was walking around, a portal suddenly appeared in front of her out of thin air. With her quick reaction, she sprinted all the way to the corner of the building on the other side. Now that she's in hidden and distanced herself from the portal, Tanya immediately wondered if this was an ambush. If it was, she had to admit that she was caught off guard.
Since the optical illusion formula that she had cast on herself was still active, Tanya took a peek behind the corner of the building to verify the person who made that portal. Shortly afterward, she detected two individuals that came out from that portal, one of them was a slender young man while the other one was very bulky. The pair seemed to be in a conversation, so Tanya enhanced her hearing to eavesdrop on them.
"Yami-san, can't we call it a quit now? I have a date shortly after this. Besides, didn't you say that the other captains are also participating in the search? You should take it easy, this isn't like you to take things seriously."
"This is a direct order from Julius so shut up, will you? Or, should I drill some senses into you to stop whining?"
"Hiekk! No, sir! I can still keep going!"
Tanya who looked from afar slit her eyes, Thugs? Seeing that muscular guy is threatening the other one, I can only assume he's the boss? They even had similar robes so they might be in a gang or something. Tanya thought to herself. Whoever they were, it's better to avoid them. Associating yourself with sketchy people will never be a good idea. As for now, she will wait for them to leave before continuing her search.
"... Finral, we're being watched." muttered the muscular guy.
Tanya's eyes widened in shock after hearing that. How did he know? Did he have detection magic of the sort? Her optical illusion formula should've erased her presence and mana completely.
Before she knew it, the muscular man made eye contact with Tanya from far away. "Found ya, you little rat."
She clicked her tongue, never she had thought that her position would be exposed that easily. Was the concept of mana in this world different from her previous one? Was that how he managed to detect her? No matter, she had to act fast!
Wanted to avoid conflict, Tanya came to the conclusion to retreat. If she were to fight with those guys, she would attract unwanted attention towards herself.
Before she could even run in the opposite direction from those thugs, a portal appeared in front of her again. The two men stepped out from the portal, blocking her retreat path. The bulky guy who was smoking a cigarette simply puffed out a smoke and stared at the invisible Tanya.
"Interesting spell you have there, other Magic Knights might not be able to pick up your presence but that won't work on me. Reveal yourself."
What she should do now? Should she just activate her Type 95 and fly away? If it's an aerial chase, she had the confidence to outmaneuver them with her experience as an ace backing her up. Though, the portal could be a pain in the neck. Tanya wasn't sure whether or not it was a spell or if its some kind of device. Whatever it was, as long as they have the ability to pop out those portals, escaping would be difficult, even for the Argent.
Yea... it's too risky to gamble on her skill, especially since she doesn't even have the baseline on how powerful the folks here in this world are. After all, one of them saw through her illusion with ease. Ultimately, she decided to compromise for now and disabled her optical illusion formula to reveal herself.
Now that it had come to this, she had to play this smart.
