Episode 2: A Mission of a Lifetime
Clink
The katana rattled off hers with intent as a figure moved to reposition himself for a more beneficial role. Using the small seconds open, she furiously went to slice his clothes. Unfortunately, her grip untightened when the katana was hit too, and waving it immediately after didn't help that she frowned deeply as she realized this. Still, it was too late to change, so when she tried to slice his clothe, she lost her katana, and it flew to the air, but wasting no time, she quickly moved father back and grabbed the shuriken from her pockets. But before she can, the man promptly moves in front of her and slice her shirt. Clapping could be heard as the two bows, signifying the end of the fight. "It's not fair," she grumbles in Japanese. "What not fair?" the man asks. "Because⦠it just not fair!" She became throwing a fit, just shouting at him. He stood there motionless, looking at her, which sparked even more in hospitality from her.
"Tegan-san, you must not throw an ill-fated accusation when your shinobi partner has clearly had no chance to cheat in the match. If this were well in real life, we shinobi must use all our opportunities we have to complete the mission." came a loud and gruff voice cried of a tall man overlooking the two.
"Sorry, Sensei Michiko." Tegan-san bowed solemnly but glared at her sparring partner, who absently left their house after the Sensei speech. Sensei then gives her tips on keeping better grips on the katana, but Tegan-san barely registers the advice. Her gut intensified at the thought of keep losing to a man who wouldn't get happy when Sensei complimented him when he was the best shinobi of them all. She wanted to prove herself. She needed to. "Tegan-san!" A young girl waved toward her with a huge smile across her face. Hearing the girl's moonlight beauty and hypnotic voice, Tegan's heart skipped a beat. Wrapping Tegan-san in a huge hug, she jumped up and down with energy like a bee getting honey, cheerfully recounting her day while commenting on Tegan's fashion sense:
"I love your new hairstyle, though to be quite honest, I like it better when it was a bun, more traditional that way, and how sparkly and regal your kimono is!" She was lying through her teeth as the comment as the clothes was a hand-me-down from Tegan's sister before she left and certainly far from anything a royal would have. But a smile slipped by her inside and to Tegan's face. "Thanks, Otani-san, I have free time, and I love to spend it with you." The laughter of innocent joy escaped Otani's lips and then, without explanation, started running toward the river. Tegan ran with her, feeling the high wind.
"I have a mission for you two, Tegan-san and Hirota-san," Sensei explained. They were in the living room, and it was dark outside. The rest of the students were sleeping, so only Tegan and her Hirota were drinking tea, despite Tegan's displeasure.
"You just need to scout around general on the enemy side residence close by here, taking notes of guard routine so that we may plan out missions to there when necessary."
They both nodded and rapidly departed in black clothing to the nearby general residence, moving as quietly like a predator stalking food in the alleyways of their village before meeting the outskirt of the more isolated building of the general.
Looking around the area, a couple of guards were stationed around the building, following a routine that Hirota quickly found and memorized. Looking for weak points for invasion from the house, Tegan spotted several and begrudgingly decided to tell Hirota about them.
"This is enough data for any future plan involving this building," said Hirota, and quickly he began to wall back to the house. But something didn't let Tegan do the same, seeing Hirota make her blood boil, especially after her humiliating defeat at the sparring match. He didn't care for the compliments, yet he got them anyways, while she cared and always lost. It was a vicious and tortuous cycle that today she will break. Impulsive, she saw her best opening at an open window, knowing she only had a minute before the guard found her. She ran like lighting and began climbing the wall. Hirota looking back and seeing her, calculated if he should follow, they almost was going to get them caught, and losing one shinobi is better than two, and then one can still give out the information. But he remembers a promise not made too long ago, before dinner with Sensei:
"Promise me to watch over her on this mission, no matter the decisions she impulsively makes."
"Promise Sensei."
Quickly he climbs the wall with Tegan.
"What are you doing?" Tegan asked
"I climbing the wall with you."
"I understand that, but why?"
Before he could reply, they both reached Tegan's destination and went inside the window room. It was a standard, if not plain Japanese-sized room. The only thing was a big box, a load of scriptures, and piles of paper.
"Why you did it right now doesn't matter. All that matters right now is looking at these papers. Some of these have to have important information. Let's try this box first."
While Hirota began reading some documents, Tegan went to the box. Surprisingly, Tegan has no trouble opening the box, as if the owner didn't care for the content inside. Inside, it was empty except for a round ball of light. It didn't look to be contained but looked like nothing of interest. Mouth curled in displeasure and disappointment, she moved to close the box when the door swung open.
A young girl with black hair stood into a different style of hair tide, though a bit more fancied done. Brown eyes like melting chocolate and a round cutesy face. She was beautiful, but a problem. So forcibly, taking only seconds to think, Hirota knew the best possible action he needed to take.
It all happened so fast it almost felt like a dream.
Tegan moved her eye to Hirota, and without doubt or regret, she lunged her arm from stopping him from lunging to kill her. If one second later he had moved to kill the intruder, she wouldn't have been able to grab him, and her friend Otani wouldn't have screamed, a loud screeching cry. With panic in Tegan's eyes, yet complete calmness in Hirota, they moved to the window, only to the bright light creature floating.
"How did yo-"
Then all three, Hirota, Tegan, and Otani was, submerged in bright blue light then darkness.
