THWA: Glad you enjoyed it. You'll find out when we get to that point.
Screw Loose: I will address my issues with Clara when the story gets to that point, so you'll find out then.
Jane, Jack and Donna had roused the sleeping Mickey, Martha and Wilf. After breakfast, the group returned to the viewing room. They retook their seats just before the TV started up again.
In Venice, 1580, a woman is sitting on a throne in a palace like room. A man and a much younger woman are escorted to the center of the room, bowing to the woman. The man introduces his daughter, Isabella, who is seventeen, begging for the woman to admit her into her school so she may have a future.
"Why are we seeing this?" Mickey asked in utter bewilderment.
"I assume it's like the Starship UK one, it'll tie into what The Doctor is doing," Martha mused.
"So this school will probably be his next adventure then," Wilf noted.
The woman claims to have sympathy for his plight, understanding the need to secure one's own. She exchanges a glance with a young man standing by her throne. The man grabs Isabella by her hand, declaring she is his world. The woman agrees, saying they will take his world and father and daughter exchange a joyful hug.
"Something feels…off," Martha muttered, unable to shake a feeling of unease that came over her.
"I feel it to," Jack assured her. "This woman…she reminds me of too many people I've encountered in my life. They present themselves as a savior but they're anything but."
"She reminds me of The Master," Martha agreed, now realizing why she got such a bad feeling from the woman.
"She does give off the same vibes as that man," Wilf agreed, shuttering as he remembered the madman.
"What does that mean for Isabella?" Donna worried.
"Nothing good," Mickey said darkly.
The woman then rises from her chair, telling him to say goodbye to Isabella. The pair are stunned as the man asks now but the woman says time ticks. As a man approaches them, the father tells Isabella to be brave and to make him proud. Isabella then watches tearfully as her father is escorted out.
There was not a single person in the room who was not moved by the scene. Mickey and Martha gripped hands tightly, remembering Mathew, unable to imagine such a separation. Donna had tears in her eyes, thinking of Will as Wilf wrapped an arm around her, tears beginning to shine in his own eyes.
Jack had a faraway look in his eyes as he remembered many memories with his Alice, back in the good days, when she'd been a child and had looked at him like he hung the moon. Back before Steven. Back before she hated him.
Jane wiped the tears that were falling from his eyes. It was her second time seeing the scene, but she still remembered her father, holding him in her arms as he died. It was her worst memory. One that would hopefully never happen in this new timeline.
The woman orders Isabella to step into the light. The door closes behind her father and Isabella uncertainly follows the woman's orders. The woman and the man who had been standing by her soon circle Isabella, the woman asking the man, Francesco, if he likes her. He says he does before opening his mouth to reveal long, carnivorous teeth and she screams in terror.
"Bloody Hell!" Martha exclaimed as the past viewers all stared in shock.
"Vampires?" Wilf asked horrified, performing a gesture for warding off evil.
"Maybe," Jack said suspiciously. "But in my experience, the supernatural is often confused with aliens."
"So they're vampire like aliens?" Donna asked in disbelief.
"Maybe. Although I've never heard of such a thing. And I doubt our guide will be helpful," Jack noted pointedly and Jane shrugged. "Didn't think so."
At a bar in present day Leadworth, a slightly drunk Rory, wearing a shirt with a picture of him and Amy in a heart, is on the phone, placing a call to Amy during his stag party. He drunkenly rambles about how much he wants to marry her and how much he loves her. He abruptly ends the call when some of his friends wheel in a cake. His friends all cheer as Rory is pushed forward, all of them chanting 'out'. The chanting all stops when The Doctor's head bursts from the cake.
"Well there's a sight I thought I'd never see," Mickey said dryly as the tension burst, Martha and Donna bursting into laughter.
"I don't think any of them were either," Martha giggled.
"You know, I always imagined if something like this happened, it would be at my stag party," Jack mused and Wilf shot him an odd look.
"You would," Mickey howled in laughter.
Rory and his friends all stare at The Doctor as he looks around until he spots Rory. The Doctor climbs out of the cake, greeting Rory happily. Everyone stares as The Doctor begins rambling, revealing the stripper is outside, already knowing her name. The Doctor then tells Rory they need to talk about Amy, revealing that she tried to kiss him. Rory's face falls as The Doctor says Amy's quite a kisser before realizing that sounded a lot better in his head as everyone stares at him in shock and bewilderment.
"Well, he could have broken that a lot gentler," Martha said, wincing on Rory's behalf.
"Oh Spaceman," Donna facepalmed. "You're a dumbo."
"Dad really could have been a bit more tactful…and probably should have broken that to Rory when he wasn't surrounded by all his mates," Jane mused.
"I doubt there's a way he could have told Rory and he would have taken it well," Jack noted.
"Can't really blame him," Donna muttered, still miffed at Amy on Rory's behalf.
Now on the TARDIS, The Doctor is sitting on the swing, doing some work under the console. There is a small burst of sparks as The Doctor explains to Amy that traveling with him dazzles his companions, blinding them to what's important in their lives. Rory is standing above the glass ceiling, watching The Doctor work, jumping slightly when there is another small burst of sparks.
"It certainly did with Rose," Mickey noted.
His bitterness and hurt had faded over time, but everything that had happened between them had left a scar.
"Honestly, not sure how much of that was Dad and how much that was just who Rose was as a person," Jane shrugged and got several looks of surprise.
"What do you mean?" Mickey asked in confusion and Jane shot him an incredulous look.
"Come on Mickey. The first time she met Dad, she left you on the street to go traveling with him after you had been kidnapped and nearly killed without even making sure you were okay. I've seen everything from that to Dad's death and honestly? Rose was not a good person. She was selfish; she didn't appreciate anyone in her life that wasn't Dad, whether that was you or Jackie or anyone else. Nothing else mattered to her but Dad, not even her own family," Jane pointed out.1
Mickey frowned, considering as Jack looked pensive, reflecting on Rose's actions and wondering if maybe Jane had a point.
The Doctor assures Rory it's meant to do that before going on to explain that for Amy to have experienced everything the universe has to offer alone would surely tear her and Rory apart. So he's going to send them anywhere they want. Amy asks surprised if it was like a date and The Doctor says he'll take them any time or place, but it just has to be amazing, suggesting a few places before walking over to Rory, expecting him to be in awe of the TARDIS. But Rory says it's another dimension, shocking The Doctor. Rory reveals he's been reading up on the latest scientific theories since Prisoner Zero.
"Pays attention to details most would dismiss and studious," Jack said impressed.
"Well he's a nurse, which is only a little easier than being a doctor. I'm more surprised he looked into it further, most people would try to stay far away from this kind of thing," Martha said, as impressed with Rory as Jack.
"Rory is not most people," Jane said with a slight smile.
"He's make a good soldier with those qualities," Mickey noted.
Jane smiled, wondering how they'd react to the end of this set.
The Doctor notes annoyed he likes it when someone says it's bigger on the inside, noting he always looks forward to that. He walks over to Rory, who nervously stares him down before The Doctor smiles.
"And The Doctor is messing with him already," Jack said amused as light chuckles broke out across the room.
"Spaceman, you are terrible," Donna laughed.
Amy begins talking about the date, saying she's tired of running and asks what Rory thinks. Before he can answer, The Doctor suggests somewhere romantic as he pulls down the lever. The TARDIS materializes in Venice as the trio walk out.
"And he took them to Venice. What a bloody shock," Donna said sarcastically.
"So it seems The Doctor will be involved with those vampires," Wilf noted.
"Or whatever they are," Mickey added and Wilf nodded.
"It's like a bloody show," Martha muttered.
"Like I said, Dad and the TARDIS wanted to keep the recordings interesting," Jane shrugged.
Amy and Rory look around in amazement as The Doctor gives a brief history lesson on the city. As he mentions the famous people who lived there, The Doctor quickly checks his watch, relieved that Casanova won't be born for 145. He owes him a chicken.
"He – you know what, I'm not even surprised. Of course he does," Martha said, not questioning it.
"I'm sure we'll probably see he has connections to more historical figures as these go on," Jack speculated.
"You have no idea," Jane said with a smile.
Rory is surprised by this new information as The Doctor explains he and Casanova had a bet. As they continue walking, they're stopped by a man, demanding 'papers', proof of residency. The Doctor pulls out his psychic paper and the man promptly bows, calling The Doctor 'your holiness'.
"Of course he passes himself off as the Pope," Martha muttered, unsurprised.
"Well, if you want to get information in this era, who better to impersonate?" Jack pointed out and Martha nodded, conceding his point.
The Doctor accepts the man's apology, asking what the man's job was. The man explains Venice is not allowing foreigners due to the plague. Amy snaps at The Doctor for bringing her to suck a time period before the man calls Amy 'Viscountess'. The man explains Venice has been put under quarantine by order of their patron, Rosanna Calvierri. The Doctor suspiciously notes the plague died out years ago but the man insists that Rosanna has seen it with her own eyes, having told the people that the cities are littered with bodies.
"So she keeps the city isolated while passing herself off as their patron. She has them under her thumb," Mickey realized.
"And no one leaves because she has them terrified," Jack added. "She's taken over the entire city."
"What is it about her and this school though?" Donna wondered.
"Seems like some high society thing," Martha mused. "At least that's what she has the people thinking."
Rory takes back the psychic paper, looking at it as The Doctor and Amy begin to head off. Rory points out it say he's their eunuch and Amy promises to explain later. A group of girls wearing Victorian dresses, veils on their heads, are walking out of a castle. Rosanna tells the girl to put their veils over their face and they comply. The Doctor, Amy and Rory lean over a railing, giving them a view of Venice. Their attention is drawn by Isabella's father rushing over to the girls, frantically looking for his daughter. He pulls up their veils, looking for her. When he finds her, one of the other girls pushes him onto his back, hissing at him as she displays her teeth.
"They're not even trying to hide it from him," Donna said in surprise.
"Either they think no one will believe him or they know he can't stop them," Jack said in suspicion.
"Which raises the question what are they doing that they think can't be stopped," Martha noted and Jack nodded his agreement.
Isabella and the other girls lower their veils as Rosanna calls to them, walking away from Isabella's father. Francesco then appears, stepping on Isabella's father and pinning him to the ground. "She's gone," he says before walking off after the girls.
"Gone? What does she mean by gone?" Wilf asked uneasily.
"Well I doubt he meant she left," Mickey noted.
"No," Jane said sadly as she looked at the screen in a way that quelled any questions.
Amy and Rory watch as Isabella's father continues to call for her, Amy asking The Doctor what that was about. But she turns her head to find The Doctor has vanished. Amy grumbles to Rory she hates it when he does that as Rory makes a face.
"Well this is going swimmingly," Martha said dryly.
"Well Rory did just find out she's been traveling with The Doctor and kissed him to boot," Jack noted.
"Yeah, that's gonna be an issue," Jane winced.
"And it should," Donna said darkly.
The Doctor catches up to Isabella's father, asking about the girls. Isabella's father is surprised The Doctor doesn't know and The Doctor explains it's his first day. The Doctor notes he must have gone to a lot of trouble to get his daughter into that school, so why is he trying to get her out? "Something happens in that school. Something magical, something evil. My own daughter didn't recognize me. And that girl who pushed me away, her face, like an animal," Isabella's father said. The Doctor puts his arm around Isabella's father, saying its time he met Rosanna.
"Why is it that every time The Doctor goes somewhere, he finds trouble?" Martha wondered.
"Because he's a magnet for danger," Donna said and no one could disagree.
At the school, Rosanna is drinking from a large chalice when Francesco calls out for her. She says she's hydrating and Francesco gives a sarcastic response before informing her about Isabella's father trying to grab the girls. Rosanna groans, leaning back against a fountain and Francesco sits down by her legs, saying they've converted more than enough girls and it might be time for them to meet his 'brothers' but Rosanna tells him she will decide when they have enough. Francesco offers to take the girls into the city tonight to make more but Rosanna orders him to follow the plan. Rosanna wants the people to bring them their daughters willingly. Hearing a bell ring, Francesco jumps to his feet as a man walks in, helping Rosanna up. Francesco watches annoyed as Rosanna walks out of the room.
"So they don't have enough girls just yet," Jack noted.
"Enough for what though?" Donna wondered.
"There are more of them. Francesco mentioned brothers," Martha noted.
"So the question is where are they?" Jack asked a pit of unease forming in his stomach.
"Anyone else notice they seem to drink a lot of water?" Mickey pointed out. "Doesn't seem very vampire like."
"Or maybe vampire myths are more historical fiction," Jack pointed out and Mickey didn't disagree, musing silently on this.
In the city, Rory asks Amy what she's been doing. Amy starts to explain when Rory suddenly asks if she missed him. Amy, taken aback, says she knew she'd be coming back to him, lightly punching him on the shoulder. Rory begins to walk away, grumbling that The Doctor was right: traveling with him blots out everything else.
"Well Amy's not doing a very good job putting his concerns at ease," Mickey noted with a wince, reminded of when Rose had come back from traveling with The Doctor the first time.
"Amy really doesn't have the bedside manner to do that in a way that would reassure Rory with words. But she does so in other ways," Jane said, thinking of the next recording. "I know what you're thinking Mickey, but Amy isn't Rose. She doesn't forsake everything else for The Doctor. Just let her prove it."
"I hope you're right. For Rory's sake more than Amy's," Donna muttered, still not buying it.
Amy walks up to him, grabbing his hand and pleading not to fight on their date. Hearing a group of pigeons flapping their wings up above them, Rory notes the sheer ridiculousness of their situation and the two laughs before they begin to head into the city. As they pass a staircase, they don't notice Francesco watching them.
"And I'm sure he's just on a casual stroll," Martha said sarcastically.
"If he is, I'm straight," Jack muttered.
A girl passes by, offering Francesco some flowers but he shakes his head. As she heads off, he walks down the staircase, following her. He follows the girl into a tunnel. She offers him flowers and this time he accepts them. Rory is taking a picture of Amy on his phone when they hear a woman scream.
"Looks like someone got tired of waiting on Mummy's plan," Mickey said as they all watched, worried for the girl.
"He's a loose cannon, reckless and impatient. That may play into The Doctor's favor," Jack mused.
Amy runs towards the scream and Rory runs after her. They find Francesco taking a bite out of the woman's neck. He lifts his head, revealing his teeth. The shocked pair watch as he walks off. Rory runs to the girl, beginning to check her over as Amy runs after Francesco, ignoring Rory's calls for her to come back. Amy chases Francesco through the streets, running through an archway and stopping, as it leads directly into a river. She looks around but finds no sign of Francesco. In the river, something watches Amy before she walks off.
"So Francesco dove into the water," Donna said surprised by how he could do so without making a sound.
"No," Jane said but didn't elaborate.
"Well something's in the water," Martha noted.
Jack frowned, a suspicion forming in his mind. Francesco had mentioned brothers. But he'd have to keep watching to confirm his theory.
Isabella's father walks up to the gate of the school, demanding to see his daughter. As the guards are busy with him, no one notices The Doctor sneaking over to the side gate. He uses his screwdriver to unlock it before walking through. The Doctor walks down into a tunnel, finding a mirror. He examines his reflection, straightening his bowtie before a group of girls calls out to him. He whirls around; taking a look at them before looking back at the mirror, seeing there's no reflection in them.
"No reflection. They certainly seem to share the same characteristics as vampires," Wilf pointed out.
"Doesn't mean they are gramps," Donna pointed out. "Things are not always as they seem."
"You sounded just like him just now," Martha said in surprise and Donna blinked.
"Guess I still have some of him left over in my head," Donna muttered.
The Doctor takes a moment to process this as he turns back and forth between the girls and the mirror, declaring he is loving it, calling them like Houdini In sync, they asks him who is and he pulls out a library card from one of his previous incarnations before realizing Rory still has his psychic paper.
"Seriously Spaceman? You didn't bother getting your psychic paper back?" Donna groaned.
"I guess in all the excitement, it slipped his mind. He is much more excitable than the last Regeneration," Jack noted.
"Doubt it would have worked on them anyway," Jane said, shrugging when they looked at her confused. "Spoilers."
Putting together that the girls don't like sunlight and don't cast a reflection, The Doctor realizes they're vampires. The Doctor asks why they shut down the city and, speaking as one, the girls demand he leave or they'll call for the Steward, 'if he's lucky'. The Doctor grins before they open their mouths to reveal their teeth. The Doctor begins to head out before demanding they tell him the whole plan. "One day that'll work," The Doctor mutters as the girls continue advancing on him.
"I wouldn't bet on it," Martha told the screen.
"Uh, Martha-" Mickey started.
"I know I'm talking to a screen," Martha snapped and Mickey shut his mouth as Jack and Donna both snickered.
The Doctor declares he's thrilled, calling it 'Christmas' before running up the stairs.
"Only he would love this," Jack said in amusement.
"He's Boss. What else do you expect?" Mickey shrugged.
That night, The Doctor and Amy meet up, comparing notes and excitedly noting they've seen vampires. Rory then runs up to them, saying they've seen a vampire. The Doctor says he knows and Amy adds The Doctor went to their house. The Doctor says they need to get back there, to Rory's disbelief. Amy asks how and The Doctor says they'll need his new friend.
"I think Rory is starting to wonder if they're both made," Martha noted.
"He might not be wrong," Jack mused.
"He gets used to the craziness," Jane shrugged.
"We all do," Mickey noted.
"So now they're going to be working with Isabella's father," Wilf noted.
"Seems that way Wilf," Jack noted, curious as to how this would go.
At his house, Isabella's father shows the trio a map of the school, pointing them to a tunnel underneath the school that leads up to the house. But there's a trapdoor blocking the way. Amy notes they need someone on the inside and The Doctor says no, already knowing she was going to suggest they send her inside as an applicant for the school. Rory adds his disagreement, pleading for her to listen to The Doctor. Amy argues they don't have another option but Isabella's father adds they do, pointing to the barrels of explosives stacked behind Rory.
"Blimey. He's really willing to go to war to get his daughter back," Mickey said in disbelief.
"Some parents will do anything for their child," Jack said as he thought of Alice.
His daughter hated him, with good reason. But were she to need him, no force in the universe would stop him from going to her side.
Isabella's father explains he helped build the warships for the navy as The Doctor examines the barrels, sniffing the gunpowder and Rory uneasily steps away from them. The Doctor, however, shoots down this idea. Isabella's father asks out of frustration what he thinks they should do, wait until they turn his daughter into an animal? Amy slyly points out she can be there in a matter of hours.
"Doesn't seem like they have many other options," Martha noted.
"There are no good options sometimes. This seems like the lesser evil," Jack agreed.
"Sending Amy into the lion's den?" Donna asked worriedly.
She was still not over the whole 'trying to seduce The Doctor' issue, but they didn't mean she wanted Amy to put herself in danger.
"Might be the only way to get to the bottom of this," Mickey pointed out.
The Doctor refuses, saying this is how they go and it can't keep happening this. He sits down, putting a hand to his face before admitting he needs to know, so they'll say he's her father. Amy points out they'll never believe it. He agrees, offering to say their siblings but Amy finds it to weird so they settle on fiancée. Rory immediately protests to this and Amy agrees, noting they've already seen The Doctor, so Rory should do it. He'll be her brother, Amy says.
"And I'm sure Rory's going to love that," Donna said sarcastically.
"It makes sense practically though. I doubt anyone with a fiancé will be admitted," Jack mused. "Not with someone so close."
"Or the fiancé will just be killed later," Martha pointed out and Jack nodded, conceding the possibility.
Rory protests and Isabella's father says he thought The Doctor was the one engaged to Amy. The Doctor says that's not helping as Rory snaps that this is mental, as they're vampires. "We hope," The Doctor said, taking Rory aback. Amy and The Doctor realize if it's not a vampire, what could be so bad it doesn't mind people mistaking it for such.
"I almost don't want to know," Wilf said, performing another gesture for warding off evil.
"If it's something worse than a vampire, I'm not sure I do either," Martha said with a shudder.
"Really depends on your definition of 'worse'," Jane shrugged.
At the school later that night, Rory and Amy are now in the proper attire as they meet with Rosanna. Rory gives their cover story: they're orphans due to the plague, in poverty as he's a gondola driver. Francesco suspicious asks if they've met. Rory says he just has one of those faces but he says he wasn't talking to him, staring at Amy.
"He recognizes her from her chasing him," Mickey said uneasily.
"Oh this is going to go well," Martha said flippantly.
"All Amy needs to do is get inside long enough to open the trap door. The Doctor can handle things from there," Jack said certainly.
"If she can stay alive long enough," Donna muttered.
Rory nervously covers as Rosanna demands to her Steward, Carlo, why he's brought her this 'imbecile'. Carlo explains they have references from the king of Sweden and Rory walks up, showing her the psychic paper as Francesco circles the uneasy Amy. Satisfied, Rosanna asks Francesco if he likes Amy, which he says he does. Rosanna says they accept Amy and Rory is escorted out. Amy tells him to tell 'Uncle Doctor' that she'll see them both soon. She assures him she'll be fin, unaware that Francesco has revealed his teeth to Rory behind her.
"This is not going to go well," Martha declared and Jane winced.
"Yeah, it could have gone better," Jane muttered.
Amy is escorted into the school, growing uneasy by the other girls' stares. She is led into a room with other girls, Carlo tells Amy to leave her clothes on bed before changing and waiting her. As two of the other girls leave, Amy notices a girl sitting on one of the beds.
"Isabella," Wilf exclaimed.
"Well at least she's still alive," Donna said dryly to be optimistic.
"So it seems," Jack said, unable to shake the uneasy feeling.
Amy introduces herself and the girl quietly says she is Isabella. Amy promises she will get her out of there but she needs to know what is going on. "They come at night. They gather around my bed and take me to this room with green lights and a chair with straps, as if for a surgeon," Isabella said tearfully. Amy asks what happens in there and Isabella reveals she wakes up here with no memory, her skin now being burned by the sun.
"So less magic and more science then," Martha noted.
"Doesn't seem like a very vampire thing to do," Mickey pointed out.
"So if they're not vampires, what are they?" Donna asked uneasily and no one had an answer.
Outside the school, Isabella's father, now wearing Rory's shirt, rows a boat with The Doctor and Rory into the secret tunnel. The Doctor assures Rory Amy will be fine and Rory demands if he can promise him that, for which The Doctor doesn't answer. Inside, Amy heads down into the basement, holding a candle. As she walks down, she walks passed a box with decaying arms sticking out of it.
"What the bloody Hell is that?" Mickey exclaimed as the past viewers looked at the screen startled.
"A pair of arms, obviously," Jack said suspiciously.
"So they hack off body parts to?" Donna asked looking sick to her stomach.
"I'm not sure that's it," Martha said, eying the screen. "Why would they need to hack them off? Something is off."
"You'll see in a few minutes," Jane said grimly.
The boat arrives at the secret entrance and The Doctor, holding a torch, heads inside with Rory. The Doctor starts to give Rory instructions when Rory cuts him off, confronting him about what happened between him and Amy. The Doctor incredulously asks if Rory wants to do this now and Rory snaps that he has a right to know, as he's the one getting married to her.
"I agree with Rory, but now might not be the best time," Donna pointed out.
"Well, it's really the first opportunity he's had to be alone with The Doctor. I guess he's taking advantage," Martha shrugged. "Although you're right, his timing could be better."
Amy locates the trapdoor. She unlocks it and begins to head back but yelps when she finds someone blocking her way, dropping the candle.
"Oh Bloody Hell. Of course something goes wrong," Martha groaned.
"If it didn't, it would be too easy," Mickey said with a sigh.
As they walk down the tunnel, The Doctor tries to explain to Rory that Amy is not interested in him, that it was merely the relief of being alive. It should have and would have been Rory, The Doctor explains and Rory agrees. Which is why The Doctor brought him here. A large gust of wind blows out the torch and The Doctor asks if they can go see the vampires now.
"And now they can't see. Bloody brilliant," Donna groaned.
"I'm not saying it, but things keep going wrong," Mickey pointed out.
"So don't say it," Donna snapped and Mickey shut his mouth.
"Not the time Mickey," Martha said, patting her husband on the shoulder.
Amy struggles against Carlo as he drags her into a room. It is suddenly filled with green light, revealing Rosanna standing there, asking if psychic paper would really work on her.
"So psychic paper won't work on them. They're clearly an advance race if they know about it," Jack mused, his suspicion growing greater.
"You have an idea, don't you?" Martha asked in surprise.
"A theory, don't know for sure yet," Jack said, watching the recording closely.
Rory pushes The Doctor up through the trapdoor before The Doctor helps him up. They quickly realize Amy isn't there. Realizing they can't see, Rory pulls out a small Ultra Violet light but The Doctor pulls out a much larger one. Rory lamely notes The Doctor's is bigger and The Doctor says not to go there.
"Not the time Spaceman," Donna said, her lips twitching in amusement as Jack, Martha and Mickey snickered, the tension breaking briefly.
"Rory came prepared for this," Mickey noted as he regained control of himself.
"He'd have made a good Torchwood agent," Jack noted, also impressed.
"Don't think you'd have gotten him on board unless you got Amy to join as well," Jane mused.
Inside, Rosanna is interrogating Amy, asking where she came from. Francesco wants to start the process but Rosanna wants to know what Amy is doing with psychic paper. Rosanna asks who Amy is with, knowing it isn't Rory. As the girls swarm around her, trying to frighten Amy with their teeth, Amy seems to give in before saying she's from Ofsted. Rosanna laughs before ordering Amy to be put in the chair. Amy thrashes as she is strapped down into the chair, Rosanna mocking her the whole time. Rosanna moves towards the door before turning her head, revealing her teeth. As Rosanna walks over to her, Amy screams for The Doctor before Rosanna bites into her neck.
"The Doctor needs to get her out of there," Wilf said as they became worried for Amy.
"Well he's working on it. But he needs to work faster," Martha muttered.
Outside, Rory is fretting over the wedding as The Doctor opens a trunk. Inside are decaying bodies and Rory steps back in horror.
"So not body parts then," Jack noted as the past views all stared in horror.
"My word," Wilf breathed.
"What kind of nightmare have they walked into?" Donna asked horrified.
"One where the dead are discarded like trash," Mickey said angrily.
"Either those are the ones used as a food source or not everyone survives the process," Martha said, the doctor in her working it out.
"What does that mean for Amy?" Wilf asked worriedly.
"That Boss better get her out of there as quickly as he can," Mickey said darkly.
Rory asks what happened to them and The Doctor notes all the moisture has been removed from their bodies.
Jack frowned. It seems his theory was growing more and more likely. But what were they doing there?
Inside, Amy is dazed as Rosanna steps back from Amy. Francesco leans down, eying the bite marks on Amy's neck hungrily as he asks if he can 'share' Amy. Rosanna gives her blessing.
"Oi! She's a person, not food you monsters!" Donna snarled angrily.
"I doubt they see a difference," Mickey said darkly.
"If I'm right, they don't," Jack mused.
"Feel like sharing this theory of yours?" Martha asked dryly.
"Once I know I'm right," Jack said vaguely, eyes not leaving the screen.
Rory asks if vampires drink your blood and replaced it with their own but The Doctor points out the bodies have been completely drained of water along with blood. Rory asks why they're dead instead of like the girls at the school and The Doctor muses that not everyone survives the process. Rory angrily begins to storm off before turning back to The Doctor. "You know what's dangerous about you? It's not that you make people take risks. It's that you make them want to impress you. You make it so they don't want to let you down. You have no idea how dangerous you make people to themselves when you're around!" Rory snaps angrily.
"Oi!" Donna exclaimed angrily as she, Martha and Mickey looked cross.
"Is he wrong?" Jane asked simply and they all looked at her incredulously. "Donna, Martha, can you honestly say you've done anything just to try and impress him?"
Martha looked taken aback by the question while Donna opened and closed her mouth but no sound came out. Silence stretched for several seconds as Wilf look alarmed at this revelation while Jack and Mickey both looked pensive, reflecting on their past encounters with The Doctor.
"It's not your fault, it's not even Dad's. But it is his burden to bear," Jane said with a heavy sigh as she stared at the screen, the others still processing this revelation.
The Doctor has a hurt look on his face before they hear the sound of the girls, asking who they are. The Doctor jumps to his feet as the girls step out of the school. The Doctor runs up next to Rory, using his UV light to force the girls back. He tells Rory to run and they flee, the girls running after them.
"It keeps getting worse," Mickey muttered and Donna was too busy processing to scold him.
"It always does," Jack noted.
Inside, Rosanna explains the process to a drowsy Amy: first they drain her dry before filling her back up with their blood, which will feel like fire in her veins. And one morning, she will awaken with her humanity no more. Or she dies Francesco adds.
"I think I'd prefer death," Martha said, shuttering at the thought.
"Those poor girls," Wilf said horrified.
"Rosanna is nothing short of a monster," Jack said darkly.
"You don't say Immortal Man," Donna said sarcastically.
Amy asks what happens if she survives and Rosanna says she has 10,000 husbands waiting for her in the water. "Yeah, sorry. I'm kind of engaged," Amy says. Amy then kicks Rosanna in the hit and there is a sound like a breaking VCR tape. As Francesco puts Amy in a chokehold, Rosanna pulls part of her dress aside to reveal a device on her hip. Amy watches in shock as Rosanna's human form fades away, revealing her true form.
"Bloody Hell! What is that thing?!" Mickey exclaimed as they stared at the screen in shock.
"A Saturnyn," Jack said and they turned to him as he looked at the screen with a frown. "They're aquatic creatures, the fish of the universe. Although what they're doing on earth in the late sixteenth century, I don't know. Or why they're converting humans."
"It'll make sense in a bit," Jane promised.
Rosanna presses the device, restoring her human form when they hear the sound of running and The Doctor talking to Rory. Francesco releases Amy as he; Rosanna and Carlo leave the room to investigate. Amy begins trying to break free. In the corridor, The Doctor and Rory come face to face with Rosanna, Francesco and Carlo. "Cab for Amy Pond?" The Doctor quips. Amy continues to try and break free when someone grabs her hand. Amy yelps in fear but it is Isabella, who begins to untie her.
"On the plus side, they're all in the same place," Donna said optimistically.
"On the downside, they're surrounded. Another fine mess The Doctor's found himself in," Jack muttered.
As Rosanna notes their seemingly foolhardy rescue plan, The Doctor uses his UV light to force the girls back when Amy suddenly runs into the hallway. Isabella directs them to an escape route and the trio follows, Francesco and the girls hot on their tail. Rosanna orders the house sealed.
"Can this get any worse? And it gets worse no matter what I say, so I'm gonna say it," Mickey snapped before Donna could open her mouth.
"He's got a point," Jack noted.
"Well they have a way out now," Wilf said optimistically.
"But Rosanna won't let Amy or Isabella go without a fight," Martha said uneasily
As The Doctor closes the door behind them and uses his screwdriver on it, Amy explains that they're aliens, not vampires. As The Doctor and Amy laugh over this, Rory incredulous asks how that is good news, wondering what is wrong with them.
"He definitely thinks they're mad now," Mickey said with a light chuckle.
"To be fair, they're not proving him wrong," Jane shrugged.
They move through the tunnel as Francesco and the girls pursue them. The Doctor uses his UV light on them, paralyzing them briefly before following after the others. Isabella leads them to the door, opening it, the bells ringing. Amy, Rory and The Doctor rushes out, Isabella's father waiting for them. He smiles in relief at seeing Isabella. As she runs out, Isabella suddenly cries out in pain from the sunlight. Francesco and the girls grab her, dragging her back in. The Doctor rushes to try and save her but is too late, the door closing in his face.
"She can't get out, she's too far gone," Jack realized as the others stared horrified.
"Isabella," Martha said sadly.
"Even Dad can't save everyone, as much as he tries," Jane said with a heavy sigh.
"That poor girl," Wilf said sadly as he bowed his head.
"Yeah," Mickey said in agreement with a solemn look.
Donna stared at the screen, reminded of Evangelista. Another life lost two soon. She felt tears running down her face and did nothing to stop them.
The Doctor tries to find a way in but the door suddenly electrocutes him and he stumbles back, grabbing onto the railing of the steps to prevent himself falling down. Rory and Amy rush over, Rory checking on The Doctor.
"Blimey. So that's what they meant by sealed," Martha muttered.
"They electrocharged the castle so no one could get in from the outside. Or get out. A perfect defense mechanism," Donna mused, wiping her eyes.
"He's okay, isn't he?" Wilf asked concerned.
"Boss has survived a lot worse. He'll be fine," Mickey said certainly.
Amy fearfully asks if he's dead but Rory says The Doctor is breathing. Momentarily relieved, Amy looks back to see Isabella's father look down, crushed.
"He went through all that to save her…and it was all for nothing," Donna said sadly.
"It wasn't for nothing…but I doubt he'll see it that way," Jacked noted, remembering Alice's distain after what he'd done to Steven.
"That poor man," Wilf said as they all felt their sympathies go out to him.
Later that morning, Isabella stands on a plank behind the school. Carlo reads from a script as Rosanna, Francesco and the girls watch. Isabella winces in pain from the sunlight as the others shield themselves with umbrellas; Carlo declaring Isabella will be 'delivered to the arms of those she betrayed'. Isabella asks if they expect her to drown, declaring boldly she can swim as she is Venetian.
"Somehow, I don't think they plan to drown her," Mickey said, a pit of unease forming in her stomach.
"What was watching Amy in the water…there are other Saturnyns in the water," Jack realized in horror.
"Rosanna's going to feed Isabella to them like cattle," Donna caught on in horror.
A member of the staff uses a spear to push her towards the edge of the river as something bubbles underneath. Isabella is pushed into the water and quickly realizes she isn't alone. She's dragged under before her head rises above water, screaming before she's dragged under again. Rosanna and the others merely smirk as they see her devoured.
"They really are monsters," Mickey said darkly as they all felt sad for Isabella.
"Depends on your point of view," Jane said, holding up her hands as they shot her incredulous looks. "I don't agree with what they're doing, it's evil. But every villain is the hero of their own story."
"No one who is evil ever thinks they're evil," Jack noted, thinking of Grey. "The world is complicated."
"Sometimes I hate complicated," Martha muttered.
"We all do," Donna assured her.
Rosanna orders for the others to leave her and Francesco alone. They all leave as he and Francesco walk down to the plank, where they could see the water. Rosanna kneels down, looking into the water, seeming to reach down towards it and Francesco warns her to change her form or his brothers will think they're being fed twice today. Rosanna promises her son it won't be long now as there is something that nearly burst to the surface.
"So they're nearly ready. But for what?" Jack wondered, not understanding why they were on earth.
"Like I said, it'll make sense in a few minutes," Jane assured him.
Rosanna makes her way inside the castle to find The Doctor sitting on her throne. He calls her a 'Sister of the water' and she realizes he's the owner of the psychic paper.
"At last they meet. This should be good," Donna said eager to see how The Doctor dealt with Rosanna.
She asks if he's a refugee like herself. The Doctor offers her a deal, an answer for an answer. He knows she's using a perception filter, which manipulates the brainwaves of the person looking at her. But when someone sees their reflection, the brain doesn't know what to fill the gap with, so it leaves the mirror blank.
"Really starting to hate those things," Martha grumbled.
"Tell me about it," Donna muttered.
"They're popular throughout the galaxy. They're not going away anytime soon," Jane told them, to their annoyance.
Rosanna asks what his question is and he asks why they can see her teeth. With a laugh, Rosanna explains the subconscious sees a threat and tries to warn the unconsciousness. The Doctor asks about Isabella but Rosanna notes it's his turn, asking where he's from. When he says Gallifrey, Rosanna notes he should be in a museum or a mausoleum. The Doctor asks why they're here and she says they 'ran from the silence'.
"The silence. Didn't Prisoner Zero say something similar?" Martha wondered.
"Silence will fall," Jack quoted, eyes narrowing. "What is the silence they keep talking about?"
"Second set of recordings," Jane explained. "Different threat, different problem."
Jack nodded, although they all still looked suspicious. But they knew that would be all they would get from Jane for now.
She asks why he's here, he says wedding present before inquiring about the silence. "There were cracks. Some were tiny; some were as big as the sky. Through some we saw worlds and people, through others we saw silence and the end of all things," Rosanna said with a haunted look in her eyes.
"Those cracks again," Wilf muttered.
"So they're still out there, just like Boss said," Mickey said uneasily.
"The universe is going to end," Donna said lowly.
"And The Doctor stops it somehow. Looking forward to seeing how," Jack said intrigued.
"You might be waiting a while Jack," Jane said with a slight smile.
"I waited over a century for him. I can wait a little longer," Jack shrugged.
Rosanna explains she and her sons fled to an ocean like theirs through the cracks, which closed behind them and stranded them here. The Doctor realizes that she wants to make earth her new planet and she asks The Doctor to help her, to his disbelief.
"She really doesn't know The Doctor at all if she thinks he'll help her," Donna said, laughing at the ridiculousness of it.
"People like her only see the universe through one lens, greedy and powerful. Everyone is always out for themselves and theirs. She could never conceive that The Doctor just might want to help people because he's a good man," Jack pointed out.
The Doctor rises to his feet and walks over to her, asking where Isabella is. Rosanna is confused until The Doctor explains who she is. Rosanna declares deserters must be executed and asks for The Doctor's answer, offering him a partnership 'any which way you choose'.
"Ew," Martha said looking a little green.
"I think I'm gonna be sick," Mickey said in disgust.
"She thinks the Spaceman would…" Donna looked ill just at the thought.
Wilf looked ready to throw up. Jane didn't look much better.
Jack merely shrugged. While he could see why they would be disgusted at the thought, Jack had seen and done far worse.
The Doctor points out that's not a good idea, joking they need to think of the children. Rosanna calls Carlo, agreeing that they are nothing alike. She will 'bend the heavens' to save her race while accusing him of philosophizing. "This ends today. I will tear down the House of Calvierri, stone by stone," The Doctor declares.
"And when The Doctor makes such a threat, you better run as far as you can," Jack said with a dark smile.
"She poked the dragon. And now the dragon is ready to bite," Martha said with a smirk.
"Rosanna has no idea who she's messing with," Donna said gleefully.
"One way or another, she's about to find out," Jane said with a tight smile.
Carlo tries to grab him but The Doctor tells him to take his hands off him. The Doctor begins walking from the throne room, Carlo right behind him. The Doctor turns back, telling her it is because she didn't know Isabella's name.
"Why would she? Isabella was just a stepping stone for her plan, whatever that is," Donna said darkly.
"Beginning to figure that part out," Jack said and they looked at him weirdly. "Just watch. I think The Doctor's going to figure that out soon enough."
The Doctor walks out of the house and Rosanna calls out, summoning everyone in the house, declaring 'the storm is coming'. Her Perception Filter flickers, still damaged from when Amy kicked it, frightening Carlo before it puts up her human image once more. She roars in frustration as Francesco asks what's wrong as Rosanna realizes Amy damaged it. Her form flickers once more before Rosanna manages to pull her human form together again, ordering Francesco to assemble the girls, saying she has a job for them.
"And now she's going to send them after The Doctor," Martha realized.
"Her funeral," Jack said with a shrug, confident The Doctor could handle it.
At Isabella's father's house, The Doctor uses the screwdriver to heal the bite mark on Amy's neck as she; Rory and Isabella's father sit around the table. He tells her she's fine, giving her a small sweet to eat. The Doctor begins pacing, trying to think. Amy says them being fish people explains why they hate the sun but he places a hand over her mouth, telling her to stop talking. Rory says he doesn't understand the school but The Doctor covers his mouth, telling him to stop talking. Isabella's father suggests they take the fight to them and The Doctor gestures for Rory to cover his mouth.
"It's like he's their dad telling them to be quiet so he can think," Mickey said with a laugh.
"Well, he is older than all of them combined, so not that far off," Martha said in amusement.
"He looks so young, sometimes we forget just old he really is," Donna noted wistfully.
"I couldn't believe it the first time he told me," Wilf mused.
"It is a bit of a shock the first time he tells you," Jane said with a slight smile.
The Doctor notes that, upon arriving, Rosanna and Francesco have one by one created more of their kind in humans. But what then, he wonders. They can't survive forever on land. The Doctor realizes she's going to do something to make the city habitable foe her kind. Remembering Rosanna declaring she will bend the heavens, he realizes she's going to sink Venice and repopulate it with the converted girls, to the disbelief of the others.
"That's why they keep converting the girls. So they can have compatible mates and repopulate the species here on earth," Martha realized, looking disgusted at the thought.
A sentiment that was shared by everyone but Jack. Donna looked positively ill at the thought while Mickey looked like he'd swallowed something revolting. Jane grimaced while Wilf looked faint.
"Ignoring how disgusting this all is for a moment, why haven't they turned any blokes?" Mickey wondered.
"Unless they don't need any," Jack said and they all turned to him. "Remember, Rosanna told Amy she'd have over ten thousand husbands waiting for her."
"No females made it through. Rosanna's making girlfriends for all her sons," Donna realized, looking like she was going to throw up at the thought.
"Yeah, that's a bit too far even for me," Jack grimaced.
"You've found a limit. I'm not sure whether to cheer or be disgusted," Martha said dryly.
Rory argues that you can't repopulate a species with just women but Amy remembers Rosanna telling her about the 10,000 husbands in the water. The Doctor realizes that the males survived the trip and Rosanna has been making mates for her sons, all of them disgusted by the thought. Hearing noise coming from upstairs, The Doctor notes the 'people upstairs are noisy'. But Isabella's father reveals there aren't any people upstairs.
"Well here comes the ambush," Mickey muttered as tension filled the room.
The Doctor knew he was going to say that as Rory asks if it's the vampires. The Doctor pulls out his UV light, noting they're fish from space. One of the windows breaks as the converted girls are then seen in the windows, a surprised Rory saying they're on the second floor before they break the windows and begin heading into the house. The Doctor quickly uses his UV light to hold them off before using his screwdriver to dismantle their Perception Filter, revealing their alien forms. Isabella's father asks what happened to them and The Doctor says there's nothing left, they've been fully converted.
"Their humanity has been stripped away, just like Rosanna said," Donna said, her voice unusually quiet as they processed the horror.
"Those poor girls," Wilf said horrified.
"It's a fate far worse than death," Jack said darkly. "Unfortunately, The Doctor was too late to save them."
"Like I said, he can't save everyone," Jane said sadly. "It's something he just has to learn to live with."
"Knowing Boss? Unlikely," Mickey noted.
The four of them begin running, Isabella's father taking up the rear. At his request, The Doctor hands Isabella's father the light. As Amy, Rory and The Doctor head outside, Isabella's father tells them to stay away from the door before slamming it shut, locking it from the inside.
"Wait, what's he doing?" Martha asked as they all felt something terrible was about to happen.
"Taking his revenge," Jane said simply.
The Doctor rushes back to the door, calling Isabella's father by his name, Guido. Guido heads back upstairs, using the light to hold the converted girls at bay as The Doctor tries to use his screwdriver on the door. But it is dead bolted. Forcing the converted girls back with the light, Guido grabs a candle, heading back towards the barrels of gunpowder.
"Bloody Hell, he's going to blow them up along with himself," Mickey realized in horror.
"It makes sense. Isabella was his world, and they took it away from him. He has nothing left to live for," Jack said as they all felt sorry for Guido.
Seeming to realize what Guido was planning; The Doctor turns and begins to run. "We are Venetians!" Guido declares before using the candle to light the gunpowder. The resulting explosion blows the door off and sends The Doctor flying.
"Poor Guido," Martha said quietly.
"At least they get to be together in the end," Wilf said optimistically and Jack smiled tightly.
"If you can believe in that stuff. But I've seen and done too much to be able to," Jack said with a heavy sigh.
At the school, Rosanna walks up to a device, declaring they will fill the sky will fire. She presses a button and the device seemed to shoot up smoke into the sky and thunder is heard.
"And now's the part where she starts to recreate her home here on earth," Donna muttered.
"If she thinks The Doctor is going to let that happen, she has another thing coming," Jack said with certainty.
Rosanna walks out onto the balcony, laughing as the people look up at the sky fearfully. As the people begin praying to God, Rosanna walks back inside. At Guido's house, The Doctor, Amy and Rory stare at the destroyed house. The Doctor realizes Rosanna is initiating the final phase of her plan. Amy wants to go stop Rosanna but The Doctor tells her and Rory to get back to the TARDIS. Amy argues he can't stop Rosanna on his own. "We don't discuss this Amy! I tell you to do something and you do it!" The Doctor snaps. Amy angrily stormed off towards the TARDIS and Rory thanks him before following Amy. "You're welcome," The Doctor says before he begins making his way into the city.
"He's taking what Rory said to heart and trying to keep them safe," Martha realized.
"Not sure how safe they'll be with the city about to be flooded," Jack noted grimly.
"Can't blame him for trying though," Mickey pointed out and Jack nodded.
As they begin making their way towards the TARDIS, Amy and Rory look up at the sky with astonished horror. Francesco was leaving the school, opening the gate when he saw them. Seeing him, Amy and Rory take off running towards the TARDIS. Francesco smirks before jumping into the water.
"On second thought, maybe they were safer with The Doctor," Martha mused as they all groaned.
"There usually never is a 'safe' with Dad," Jane pointed out.
"Wish I could say you were wrong. But, well, that would be lying," Jack noted.
At the school, The Doctor enters the throne room, heading over to Rosanna's seat. He inspects in before opening a panel on the throne to revealing a control hub inside. He begins to use his screwdriver on it when Rosanna tells him he is too late. She marvels that the man standing before her is the same man who let an entire race die.
"What people like you will never understand is that sometimes to save the many, you have to sacrifice the few," Jack said softly as he thought of Steven.
"Jack? You okay?" Martha asked gently as she saw him go into a bit of a trance.
"Yeah. Yeah, I'm fine," Jack said as he pulled himself out of his dark thoughts.
They all eyed him, sensing he wasn't telling them the truth, even Wilf would barely knew him. But Jack was never one to open up. So they turned back to the screen as the recording continued.
Rosanna gloats that he will see her new kingdom rise but The Doctor tells her the girls are gone. She steps back in horror, refusing to believe him but The Doctor points out he should be dead. She begins walking out of the room and The Doctor pleads with her to help him. But she is unmoved, leaving him to save the city by himself.
"So you doom a city and then just leave," Donna said in disgust.
"She only cares about her race. We're nothing more than insects to her, to be used and then cast aside," Jack said darkly.
"In that regard, she's no different than The Master," Martha said darkly.
The Doctor goes back to the control hub, inspecting it before running off. In the city, Amy and Rory round a corner and encounter Francesco.
"Of course he caught up to them," Donna groaned.
"And The Doctor's not around to help, so they're on their own," Martha said uneasily.
"Brilliant," Mickey said sarcastically.
Rory picks two nearby candle holders, using them to make a cross as he tells Amy to run. But Francesco easily tosses them aside, advancing on Amy.
"It's not an actual vampire Rory!" Donna snapped in exasperation.
Rory tries to draw Francesco's attention to him but it doesn't work as he backs Amy up against the wall. He tries insulting Francesco before calling Rosanna 'the only thing uglier than you'. "Did you just say something about Mummy?" Francesco asked as he turned and began to advance on Rory.
"Bloody Hell. He's the world's biggest Momma's boy," Donna said in complete disbelief.
"That's…almost funny. And really pathetic," Martha said, not sure whether to laugh or be annoyed.
"The weird, dysfunctional family is almost Shakespearian," Jack noted.
"Shakespeare was actually pretty stable, all things considered," Martha said, shrugging when Wilf and Donna looked at her in surprise. "Long story."
Rory grabs a nearby broom, trying to intimidate Francesco by swinging it like a lightsaber. But he loses his nerve when Francesco draws a sword, smirking at him. Rory frantically uses the broom to block Francesco's strikes with his sword. Amy worriedly watches as Rory badly tries to fight Francesco off, getting exasperated when he tries to strike Francesco in the chest with the soft end of the broom. Getting an idea, Amy runs up a set of stairs, telling Rory to lead him that way. Francesco cuts the broom in half and Rory throws it away. Francesco tries to strike him but Rory dodges, wrapping a nearby sheet around Francesco.
"That's one way to restrain him," Jack said, his lips twitching in amusement.
"I'm not sure whether to cheer or to laugh," Martha admitted.
"Considering he's probably never been in a fight before, he's honestly doing pretty well," Mickey noted.
Jane almost laughed. Oh how far Rory came.
Rory steps back, complaining that Francesco reeks of fish. As Francesco begins advancing on Rory, baring his teeth, Rory trips, falling on his back. Rory cries out in terror as Francesco jumps, revealing his alien form as he pounces on Rory.
"Damn it!" Mickey swore as they all watched in horror, wondering if this was the end for Rory.
As Francesco prepares to devour Rory, on the stairwell, Amy uses her compact mirror to reflect the rays of the sun onto Francesco. Francesco wails in pain before exploding, turning into dust.
"I will never complain about make up again," Mickey admitted as they all simultaneously breathed a sigh of relief.
"Told you they were useful," Martha teased, kissing his cheek.
"Lucky Amy used it just in the nick of time," Donna said in relief.
"Luck or skill," Jack mused.
"I'm just glad Rory's safe," Wilf said optimistically.
"For now. There's still Rosanna's plan," Jack noted grimly.
Rory sits up; disgusted by being covered in alien dust as Amy notes they were lucky and asks why he made the sign of a cross. Rory grumbles about being reviewed as he walks up the stairs before Amy rushes to him, pulling him in for a kiss. Pulling back, Amy declares they need to go help The Doctor before rushing off, Rory following her in a daze.
"Does this happen normally? You nearly die then you snog someone's brains out?" Donna asked Jack curiously, remembering him saying so last night and Jack nodded.
"In my experience, it's common. Of course, it's a very different time where I come from," Jack shrugged.
At the school, The Doctor walks onto the balcony, looking up at the sky uneasily as the people begin to panic bellow as it began to run. Amy and Rory rushed through the open gate as Carlo raids the house of treasure. They meet The Doctor in the throne room, where he tells them to get out. But Rory declares they won't leave him. The Doctor is incredulous about Rory's turn around, demanding to know what happens when one of them gets killed. Suddenly, the building rocks, throwing the three of them to the floor.
"If The Doctor doesn't stop that device, I think they're about to find out," Jack said as they all eyed the screen uneasily.
"Stop arguing and get to work Spaceman," Donna muttered worriedly.
Rory asks what that was and The Doctor says it was a 'bit' of an earthquake. Amy is in disbelief as The Doctor says it's a side effect of manipulating the elements. But he tells them they should worry more about the tidal waves it causes.
"Which is a real comfort to them, I'm sure,' Mickey said dryly.
"I doubt Dad cares that much about comforting them at this point," Jane noted.
"He never did really," Martha noted wistfully.
The Doctor tells them the throne is the control hub of the storm, but Rosanna has locked the program. He orders them to tear out every wire, hit it with a stick, anything. If they can shut down the control hub, it'll be rerouted to secondary hub, which The Doctor guesses is the generator.
"So if they can reroute it to the generator-" Martha began.
"The Doctor can shut it down," Donna finished. "And bye-bye storm."
As the storm rages down outside, The Doctor runs up the stairs. Seeing the bells ringing, The Doctor comes to a realization as Amy and Rory are pulling every wire they can out of the Hub. On the roof, The Doctor has climbed up onto the inside of the bell, stopping the ringing. Outside, Amy and Rory rush out of the school, seeing The Doctor climbing up the side of the building. He climbs to the top, finding the generator. Opening it up, The Doctor frantically tries to find a way to stop it. Seeing a button, The Doctor presses it and the storm stops, the weather returning to normal.
"He did it," Martha said as they sighed in relief.
"He always does," Donna said with a smile.
"Not always," Jane said softly, thinking of Manhattan.
With the sun shining, The Doctor sighs in relief as, on the ground, Amy and Rory hug. As The Doctor closes the generator, the people all cheer for him.
"And another legend about The Doctor is born," Jack noted.
"By now, I'm convinced half the legends of mythical saviors are actually about The Doctor," Martha admitted.
"That's probably not that far off," Jane mused with a thoughtful look on her face.
In the back of the school, Rosanna walks out towards the plank, fiddling with her Perception Filter, making sure it works. She begins taking off her clothes and jewelry as she begins walking towards the plank. The Doctor rushes out the door, calling out to her. Rosanna asks if one city to save an entire city was really too much to ask to save an entire species. "I told you, you can't go back and change time. You mourn but you live. I know Rosanna, I did it," The Doctor told her as he began to approach her.
"That something someone like her will never understand," Donna said darkly.
"You know The Doctor though, he has to try and save as many people as he can, even from themselves," Jack pointed out and Martha nodded.
"Yeah. There'll never be another man like him," Martha said sadly, thinking of his grave.
Rosanna asks him if his conscience can bear the weight of another dead race. She tells him to remember them before jumping into the water. The Doctor tries to stop her but is too late, only being able to watch as Rosanna is torn apart by her sons in the water.
"Blimey," Mickey muttered as they all stared at the screen disturbed.
"My word," Wilf said in horror.
"She's a monster, but still…" Martha muttered.
"She's evil. Why do I feel bad for her?" Donna wondered.
"Because unlike Rosanna, you're a good person," Jack told her. "And, in spite of everything she'd done, Rosanna was just trying to save her people. I think that's something we can all relate to."
"We just don't go to sociopathic extremes to do so," Martha muttered and Jack nodded in agreement.
The Doctor later leads Amy and Rory back towards the TARDIS, asking if he should drop them back at Leadworth. Seeing Amy doesn't want to go, Rory sighs, offering to have them drop him back off at Leadworth. Only to be surprised when Amy asks him to stay. "I want you to stay," Amy tells him.
"I was not expecting that," Mickey admitted in surprise, sure Amy would have agreed to let Rory go without a fight.
"I keep telling you Mickey, Amy is not Rose and Rory is not you. I know its hard to believe after…well, what you saw, but they actually are in love. Just let them prove it," Jane said.
"I hope so," Donna muttered, still having a hard time believing it.
After making sure The Doctor is fine with it, Rory agrees. Amy walks over to the TARDIS, noting she's got her space ship and her 'boys'. "My work here is done," Amy said before walking into the TARDIS. Rory says they're not her boys. The Doctor says they are and Rory caves after a moment.
"Amy has both of them whipped. She's good," Martha said, impressed.
"Rory coming along should make these recordings interesting," Donna said, not sure whether that was a good or bad thing.
"You have no idea," Jane said, thinking of how far Rory would go in the recordings.
As they begin to head into the TARDIS, The Doctor stops Rory, asking him to listen. Rory, confused, says he can only hear silence.
"Silence will fall," Martha muttered as they all remembered Rosanna and Prisoner Zero's warning.
"Like I said, different problem," Jane reminded them.
"Doesn't mean it's not unnerving," Donna muttered as they all wondered what the silence was.
As Rory heads inside the TARDIS, The Doctor remembers Rosanna's words about the silence before heading inside and closing the door to the TARDIS.
"Well that was…interesting," Martha said lamely as the recording ended.
"Rory joining could either bring him and Amy closer together or tear them apart," Jack noted.
"Funny you should say that, that's actually what the next recording is about," Jane said with a slight smile.
"Here we go then," Mickey said unenthusiastically as the next recording started.
And that's the end of that. Vampires of Venice isn't my favorite episode of the fifth series, but it is an enjoyable filler that perfectly sets up the Doctor/Rory dynamic.
1: I know Rose is an insanely popular character, but when you stop to think about it, she is not a good person. Rose is actually very selfish and grows increasingly apathetic to the concerns and feelings of those who love her as time goes on, with no greater example than Mickey. In the first episode, after he has been kidnapped and traumatized, Rose leaves him on the street with an 'I'm so much better than you' attitude without making sure he is okay or that he gets home safely. Once she comes back, she feels guilty for what she has put him thorough for all of five minutes before she's off running after The Doctor again. Rose didn't seem to care much about Mickey unless he was seeing someone else and even once their romantic relationship ends, Rose doesn't treat Mickey any better. She seems to forget he's even there half the time after he joins the team (which Ten is also guilty of admittedly), she laughs about Mickey being abused by his grandmother and doesn't even seem to register or care in Journey's End that Mickey has left.
