The first notes of the piano rose in the air, as the bridesmaids entered the scene one by one. Annie, then Bonnie, then Erica. All three smiled at Street before taking their places. The wedding march on the piano sounded, and all the guests rose.
One look at you; my whole life falls in line
Street gasped. Advancing towards him on the arm of her uncle Sarzo, Christina Alonso seemed to come out of a dream. When they were dating, she always dressed feminine, and she had several sets of very sexy lingerie that had never failed to make the young man lose his head. But Chris in a wedding dress, it was something magical to see.
I prayed for you; before I called you mine
He did not see it, but his own best men were speechless at the vision. He also didn't see the other guests react with a big smile and amazement. He only had eyes for her.
"You're one hell of a lucky guy, mate." Luca whispered to him, leaning quickly towards him.
"I know." Jim mumbled back.
He exchanged a handshake with Sarzo, who gave him Chris's hand. As the first bridesmaid, she passed her bouquet to Annie before facing her fiancé and slipping her hands into his. Alright, here we go !
Oh I, can't believe it's true, sometimes
Oh I can't believe it's true
The priest made a sign to the guests to sit down again, then spoke.
"We are gathered today, in this magnificent place, to celebrate the union of James Street and Christina Alonso. If anyone, for any reason, sees reason to oppose this marriage, please stay quiet if they don't wish to have all of S.W.A.T on their tail."
Everyone laughs, including the bride and groom.
"That is very true." Luca said from the row of best men.
What the young engaged couple did not know was that this little joke from the priest was not really a joke. Deacon had spoken to him himself after learning the day before that Chris's cousin wanted to get closer to Jim. This little note of humor was indeed intended for her. Especially since, from where she was sitting, Lucia had tried to open her mouth to ruin her cousin's wedding, except that Ally had grabbed her hand heavily between their two chairs, and had told her to shut down while squeezing hard enough to make her wince :
"You speak, and I crush your hand."
And it was not an empty threat. Ally wouldn't let a girl like Lucia ruin Chris's marriage because she was jealous of her.
I get to love you, it's the best thing that I'll ever do
"James, we're listening to you." said the priest to the young man.
I get to love you, it's a promise I'm making to you
Without taking his eyes off Chris, the words broke through the barrier of his lips.
"When I came to S.W.A.T. I was, well, a real brat, to be polite."
Whatever may come; your heart I will choose
Behind him, Luca stifled a laugh as he coughed, making everyone laugh and smile, but he didn't care and continued.
"It's no secret that I liked you right away, but you had a rule and instead you became my best friend. You supported me even when I was doing something stupid. Even though we took different paths, you were there for me every time things went wrong. I was heartbroken, but you fixed it just by your presence and support, and everything changed when you kissed me in that parking lot."
Teasing hisses sounded, and made him roll his eyes. Chris blushed.
Forever I'm yours, forever I do
"You took the first step, and today…" He turned to Luca, who gave him the wedding ring. "It's in front of all our friends, in front of our family, that I swear to love you and never hide anything from you, to support you in difficult situations, to protect you, even if you are more badass that half of us..."
Another burst of laughter, and a chuckle from Chris.
"I promise never to make you cry, to always be near you, to be the most faithful of husbands, and to cherish you, until death do us part."
I get to love you, I get to love you
He slipped the gold ring on her finger.
"Thank you, James." smiled the priest. "It was beautiful."
The bridesmaids, Ally, Nichelle, Chris's aunt, Donovan's wife, Mumford's wife, Annie's mother and Hondo's mother, were wiping away their tears.
"Christina, it's your turn !"
Jim picked up the tear rolling down his fiancee's cheek.
The way you love, it changes who I am
"How to continue after that ?" she said, still smiling. Jim squeezed her hands for support. "When we first met, I knew deep down that you were going to get me in trouble despite my rule of not dating cops, and I was right because beyond becoming my best friend, you have aroused in me a feeling that I have never felt before. Jealousy, and you know what I'm talking about."
Jim nodded, but Chris didn't elaborate. It wasn't necessary.
"Despite everything, I have no regrets. Everything that happened to us led us to this parking lot after an overnight intervention, and today brings us to this precise moment when I know that I made the right decision by taking the first step, and saying yes to you."
I am undone and I thank God once again
She turned to Annie who untied the wedding ring she had tied to her own bouquet. Once the gold ring was in her hand, she slipped it on Street's finger.
"I swear to always be by your side whatever the hardships on our way, never to do your bidding..." Laughter. "But most of all I promise to love you and be faithful to you every day of our lives, until death do us part."
They smiled at each other, both eager for it to be over.
"By the powers vested in me by the State of California, I now pronounce you husband and wife. You may kiss the bride !"
Oh I, can't believe it's true, sometimes
Oh I can't believe it's true
Street cupped his wife's cheek and kissed her, sealing their union as the guests rose to clap along with the best men and bridesmaids.
...
The girls had outdone themselves. Chris had let Annie and Bonnie handle the wedding arrangements however she wished, and the way the reception hall had been set up was perfect. White tables draped in navy blue tablecloths suffused with ocher, and arranged so that all guests can have a view of the dance floor. It was not time to sit down to eat, and everyone was standing in a circle, when the DJ announced the first dance.
I get to love you, it's the best thing that I'll ever do
"It's time for our newlyweds to dance their first dance as husband and wife to the music the groom has chosen. Thanks for welcoming Jim and Christina Street !"
I get to love you, it's a promise I'm making to you
Applause, and the couple walked forward and faced each other in the middle of the circle formed by their friends and family. The first notes of the song Street had chosen rang out. He held out his hand to Chris, which she took, and pulled her to him, spinning her around before wrapping an arm around her waist. He slid his fingers into her other hand, and Chris put her free hand on his shoulder. The first words were sung, and the bride recognized this song from having heard it once in a series they had both watched. They did not take their eyes off the whole dance.
Whatever may come; your heart I will choose
"Now that we are married, can you tell me where are we going for our honeymoon ?" Chris said.
"Hmm… no !" he replied, smiling. "You'll love it, I promise you. Still a little patience."
"Are you going to let me find him at the airport ?" she asked.
"It's an idea." he says. He rested his forehead against hers and whispered : "But I could be convinced tonight."
Forever I'm yours, forever I do
She giggled and snuggled closer to him, continuing to dance in his arms.
"I love you, Mrs. Street !"
"I love you too."
I get to love you, I get to love you
I get to love you, I get to love you
The song ended. They kissed.
Street having no parents, they had decided to drop the child/parent dance part, and that was just fine.
It was time for lunch, and everyone took their assigned seats. At the head table, Chris and Street of course, surrounded by their best men and bridesmaids on either side of them. Chris choked back a laugh when she saw her cousin's look of annoyance, who found herself sitting between Nichelle and Ally, like during the ceremony.
They say love is a journey, I promise that I'll never leave
In the middle of lunch, which was all-Mexican aside from the kids's plates, Luca clinked his champagne glass and stood.
"Your attention please ! There are children present so I would be very careful with what I say."
"I appreciate it, Luca !" Deacon told him, from a table near the bridesmaids.
"Street, buddy..." Luca put his hand that wasn't holding the champagne glass on his best friend's shoulder. "If someone had told me five years ago that you would marry Chris, I admit it I would have had a blast. Like many of us."
Street does not contradict him.
"But you got together, without being very discreet despite what you tried to make us believe, and then I understood. I got it from the way you two looked at each other. Couples who are completely like you are rare. I'm proud of you both, and I wish you the best possible life."
He raised his glass of champagne and made a toast.
When it's too heavy to carry, remember this moment with me
It was Annie's turn to get up.
"One day when we had invited the whole team to the house, I made a bet with my dear husband. As everyone was telling Jim that he would eventually find the love of his life, I noticed the way our newlyweds were interacting. The looks they were giving each other seemed innocent to some, but I knew. I bet with David that by the time Bonnie and Victor, our young lovers here, get married, they will end up getting together. I was right, and I won a beautiful pair of shoes."
Everybody laughs !
"I know you two will be fine because you know how to rely on each other. And this is the most important, in addition to the unconditional love you have for yourself."
I get to love you
In turn, Tan, Bonnie, Hondo and Erica made a speech.
The party was in full swing, and Chris danced with every member of his team, including the Commander, Mumford, and Buck. Even Rocker.
"So, Rocker…" Street said, wrapping an arm around Chris. "You don't regret betting against me ?"
"What he is talking about ?" asked Rocker's wife.
"Oh, your dear husband thought it was wise to bet with his team that Jim and I wouldn't make it to the wedding." replied Chris. "Erica is the only one who didn't bet. Too bad for your husband, Luca heard everything and he bet the opposite. The amount was kindly given to us."
"And it funded part of our honeymoon." Street said.
"Whose destination I still don't know." Chris said.
" You're gonna love it." he promised her.
"I want to apologize for my husband's stupidity." said Valerie, who then addressed Rocker. "Don't ask me to complain about losing money. Good for you and your team."
"Uncle Jim !"
Lila came to wrap her small arms around him.
"Can we dance ?"
"With pleasure, young lady !" he said.
"Really ? Can I steal him for you, Aunt Chris ?" Lila asked the bride.
"Yes, sweetie, go ahead !" she smiled at him.
She felt melted with happiness and love when she saw her husband make Lila dance on a title of Lady Gaga.
"So, when are you gonna have children ?" asked Valerie, who had come to her side.
"Uh, I would say within a year, we will see." replied Chris. "We have to find an apartment first, but we'll take care of it as soon as we get back from our honeymoon."
"You really don't know where you're going ?"
"No !" Chris said. "Jim wanted to take care of it, and he still won't tell me anything. He packed my suitcase."
"He is full of surprises." That's when Valerie noticed Lucia. ""Uh, who is this girl ?"
"Oh, that's my cousin, Lucia !"
"Why doesn't she take her eyes off Jim ?" Valerie asked.
"Oh, she got into her head to sleep with him just to hurt me." replied Chris. "She would have been able to ruin my marriage if Luca and Hondo's girlfriends hadn't kept an eye on her."
"What a bitch !" Valerie blurted out.
And the word was weak ! Chris would never have believed that her cousin could despise her to the point of wanting to steal her husband.
After dancing once again with his uncle, Chris was approached by Buck Spivey.
"I'm very happy for you, and thank you for inviting me. he said.
"We couldn't not do it." Chris said. "You are very important to both of us."
"Thank you Chris, for giving him a chance. He's a good kid who deserves to be happy"»
"I'm glad I listened to my heart, for once." she smiles.
"Don't ever stop."
I get to love you
The party continued all afternoon. The cake was cut, tons of pictures were taken.
"How about we go ?"
Jim was holding Chris in his arms after 'snatching' her from the evil group the girls were forming.
"I want to be alone with my wife. And if I see your cousin staring at me again, I might be mean to her."
"Maybe we should stay, then." she said cheerfully.
"Chris…" he lamented.
"Okay, let's go home !"
They kissed !
I get to love you
