S.W.A.T. HQ !

"Where are Chris and Street ?" Deacon asked, as the team got into uniform. "They're come at the same time as us, usually."

"No idea !" Luca said. "I'll try to call Street."

But before he could pull out his phone, the locker room door opened to reveal their team leader, who was already in gear.

"Chris and Street are not coming today." Hondo said. "Street called me earlier, he took Chris to the ER last night, but she's fine." he clarified when he saw the worried faces of his team. "They are waiting for the test results from the doctor, but Chris will not be working all day. Street will stick with her and join us only if we need him on the field. I've seen that before with Hicks."

"I've noticed that Chris has been off lately." Tan said. "I hope she's got nothing serious."

"You're not the only one." said Deacon, who then addressed Hondo. "You'll let us know ?"

"As soon as I have news !"

...

It was noon when the young woman emerged from the bathroom, having woken up feeling nauseous. She'd taken a shower right away, and brushed her teeth to get rid of her awful breath.

"If I'm not pregnant and I just threw up without having eaten anything since last night, then I don't know what I have." Chris said.

Street, who was preparing a salad, smiled as he let his gaze wander over his wife's half-naked body. She only wore a shorty and a sports tank top.

"Please Jimmy, I'm not in the mood for this." she told him, heading for the coffee pot.

But he stopped her by taking it from her hands.

"No coffee for you." he said. "Even if we haven't received the results yet, I prefer not to take any risks. There's fresh juice in the fridge, you drink that instead."

"Reassure me, you're not going to become a dictator throughout my pregnancy, I hope ?" Chris asked, more amused than annoyed by her husband's behavior.

"No, but I'll pay more attention to you." he said, wrapping an arm around her waist. "Honey, I'm sorry for not noticing your body was changing…"

"I didn't notice anything either." she cut him off. "I love you, and you can't know how much it means to me that you take things to heart, like stop me drinking coffee, but don't smolder me, okay ?"

"I promise !" He kissed her. "It's your aunt who will have to be curbed."

Chris groaned, which made him laugh.

"Don't worry, I'll block her." Street said. "Come on, pour yourself a big glass of juice, and go wait for me in front of the TV while I finish making lunch."

"Or…" She went to sit on the other side of the counter after pouring herself a glass of cold juice. "…I just sit here and watch you cook. Besides, you're shirtless. It's better than TV."

"Okay, you want to get an eyeful." he understood, laughing.

"You'd do the same if I decided to cook in panties." she told him.

He doesn't contradict her. So he finished preparing lunch. The salad contained lettuce, tomatoes, chicken pieces, hard boiled eggs and cucumber slices. Chris' phone rang in the bedroom as Street took out two plates. She hurried to pick up the phone. Especially since it was Doctor Keysler.

"Hello ?"

Turning to the door, she saw Street. The impatience and terror she felt could be read on her husband's face.

"Yes, I'm listening Doctor… Yes, I can come see you this afternoon." At what time ? … Yes, we will be there but…"

Suddenly, Chris' breathing hitched.

"Are you...are you sure?" … "Yes, thank you Doctor. See you later."

She hung up, and put her hand on her stomach.

"Chris ?"

"It was Dr. Keysler, she has my lab results and she's expecting us at the hospital in two hours." Chris said, looking up at her husband, who had moved closer to her. "The results are positive. I'm pregnant !"

The shock gave way to immense joy and relief. So big that Chris let his tears run free. Equally happy, Street cupped her face in his hands and kissed her.

"I told you we'd have this baby." he said before kneeling down and kissing her slightly rounded belly. "Hi you !"

Chris laughs through her tears. Yes, she had a belly, and it had nothing to do with overeating. She was going to lose her abs, but knowing that a life was growing inside her, she didn't care.

"Your belly is rounded." Street pointed out.

"Maybe that our little trip to the hospital opened my eyes." Chris said, as he got to his feet. "That, plus the unusual nausea from last night."

"You had just ate yourself a banana mixed with peanut butter when you hate it." he reminded her. "I wonder what other weird food cravings you're going to develop. Shit, I wonder how pregnant you are."

"Doctor Keysler told me I was about ten weeks pregnant based on my labs." Chris said. "No matter how hard I think about it, I have no idea what we were doing ten weeks ago. I mean, except we were constantly having sex all over our apartment."

"We don't care, what matters is that we got there, and it's been longer than we thought." said Street, stealing a kiss. "We're having a baby !"

"We're having a baby !"

He lifted her in his arms like a bride, and led her back into the kitchen.

"Come on, let's eat..." He put her back on the stool. "Then we get ready, and we go see your doctor."

In a better mood, and without nausea, Chris regained her appetite and devoured the salad prepared by her husband.

...

The wait in the obstetrics department was worse than that night in the emergency room. Around them were pregnant women of all types, but most of them were almost to the teeth. Chris wasn't necessarily looking forward to looking like a bibendum… As if reading his mind, Street intertwined their fingers and leaned into her ear to whisper :

"You'll be beautiful."

"Mr. and Mrs. Street ?"

They followed a nurse to the obstetrician's office. Dr. Keysler had been following Chris for almost a year. Dark-haired, with green eyes and a slightly tanned complexion from her Cuban side, she motioned for the couple to sit down opposite her, on the other side of the desk.

"How do you feel, Mrs. Street ?"

"A little stressed." Chris admitted.

"I understand, but there is no reason to be. Your Beta-HCG level in your blood is no doubt that you are pregnant. You are almost at the end of your first trimester."

"How could I miss it ? asked Chris. "I mean, I had no signs until last night and…"

"You were very tired yesterday." Street reminded her.

"Fatigue is a symptom of early pregnancy, as far as your period…" Dr. Keysler referred to the notes taken by the on-shift doctor who had seen Chris last night. "… just completely normal bleeding in the first trimester. I'm not going to take your blood again, the doctor on duty asked the lab to do a complete check-up, which allowed me to see that you have a slight vitamin B12 deficiency, but nothing to worry about. We'll sort this out real quick, and I'll be monitoring this as your pregnancy progresses. Your serological tests also show that you are positive for toxoplasmosis, which is a very good thing. We're going to do an ultrasound now, and I'll schedule your next appointments afterwards."

She pointed to the auscultation table to the couple. Chris was holding her husband's hand as soon as she lay down on the table. She winced a little from the coldness of the gel that Doctor Keysler spread on her stomach. She dared not look at the monitor as the doctor ran the probe.

"Everything looks very good to me." the doctor said, before moving the probe to a specific spot. "We should be able to hear the heart beating... right there !"

For accompanying Bonnie to one of her ultrasounds when she was pregnant with Adam, Chris jerked her head towards the monitor. Hearing a baby's heart beat was one thing, but hearing your own baby's was more moving. More unreal. Chris was indeed pregnant, and she really realized it when Dr. Keysler put her index finger on the monitor to show them – her and Street – the whereabouts of the baby.

"Um, can we know the gender of the baby ?" Street asked.

"No, I don't want to know." Chris said, looking at her husband. "I want to be surprised."

"OK." Street nodded. "We will do as you wish."

He kissed her on the forehead.

"Anyway, it's far too early to find out." said Doctor Keysler. "But I make a note to keep everything about the gender of the baby to myself."

The rest of the consultation passed quickly and unfocused. Chris jotted down the upcoming appointments in her phone calendar, and retrieved the prescription for the prenatal vitamins. In the car, Chris cried. Hormones were probably playing, but it did her good. She cried because they had been trying to have a baby since returning from their honeymoon. Since their family and friends had given them an apartment as a wedding present, there had been no reason to wait. They hadn't bothered trying to wait until ovulation to make love, or even call a doctor to make sure it worked. They were young and in perfect health. Doctor Keysler had approved of their decision to let nature take its course.

"Hey…" Street hugged his wife as best he could in the small space of the cabin. "Breathe my love, it'll be fine."

"I'm sorry I… I didn't know it would put me… like this." Chris said through her tears.

"You have the right to cry, as long as they are tears of joy." joked Street.

Chris laughed.

"Or relief."

"Yes !" She pulled away and wiped the tears from her face with a Kleenex she pulled from the glove compartment. "I…I didn't know it would put me in this state of knowing… knowing that I was pregnant."

"Chris, we've been trying for months without results, it's normal tolet go." he said. "We are going to go for a walk on the beach, you need to relax and the sea air will do you the greatest good."

Ten minutes later, they were walking hand in hand on the seaside. Barefoot, they had left their shoes in the trunk of the car.

"You were right, it makes me feel good." she said, facing the ocean.

"I'm always right." Street hugged her tightly behind her. He ran his hands under her sweater, even the skin of her belly. "I'll take good care of you two, you'll see. I'd be a good father."

Chris had never doubted it. He hadn't had the best of parental examples, and neither had she, having been raised by his aunt after her mother's death, and there was no question of repeating their mistakes. This baby was going to be loved as it deserved. With unconditional love. The little extra of future parents was their entourage. Chris was a little worried that her aunt was too oppressive; her tia will do well to help but it would end up suffocating Chris. A little conversation with her was going to be in order very quickly. But Chris didn't worry too much, since their S.W.A.T. family and the girls – Annie, Nichelle, Bonnie and Ally – will be there to support her. Strangely, she already knew that she would find more comfort in letting her friends help her rather than her own aunt.

"I know you will be an awesome dad." Chris said, putting her hands over her husband's, still on her stomach.

"And you a wonderful mother. he said.

"As long as we do the opposite of what our parents did." She threw her head back slightly, and Street took the opportunity to kiss her neck. "Um, we would have known sooner if I hadn't been so closed in on myself, because of all these negative tests."

"You're not the first woman this has happened to." he comfort her. "But what we have to remember is that you are pregnant. And I've been thinking about it ever since Dr. Keysler told us the date of conception, I think I know when it happened."

"I admit that I have not yet considered the question." Chris said.

"Baby, ten weeks ago, it was mid-November, and mid-November, on the exact date given to us by Dr. Keysler, I took you camping." Street reminded him.

"Wow, wait a minute !" She turned in his arms, and he took the opportunity to slide his hands on her ass. "Are you telling me this baby was conceived during our weekend in the woods ?"

"Yes, that's exactly what I'm saying." He stole a kiss from her. "If I remember correctly, the day after our arrival, we stayed in our tent for a while, huddled together. His voice became more seductive. "You woke me up by laying on top of me as if to straddle me, and you kissed my neck, with that perfect mouth." He ran his thumb over her lower lip. "We quickly got naked and I warmed you up because you were shaking, I made love to you again, and again, and again."

"Um, I remember we did a hike between all this sport." Chris said, feeling a familiar tingle between her legs. "Stop talking to me like that when we're not at home. My hormones are going to flare up and I'm going to get fired up for nothing so"

"I hope I am the only one who will have this effect on you." he said before kissing her.

They laugh through that kiss.

Back home, they lounged on the couch. Street's hand didn't move from the rounded belly.

"I'm going to become fat." Chris said.

"I believe it is inevitable, honey." he said. "But you will be beautiful."

"Do you think Hicks will let me work without my uniform ?" she asked. "I'm not going to go into it again, at some point."

"There is no reason for him to refuse. You're not going to go to the field anymore, and you're not going to practice anymore and…" She grumbled. "What ?"

"I'm going to be bored." she whined.

"No, I'll always be here to keep you company." he said to him. "Or not if you find me too clingy."

"Yeah !" she said before regaining her smile. "Hmm, I'm already wondering how my hormones will react when I see you training."

"It'll excite you, I hope." he said, sliding his hand towards her intimacy, which he touched through his pants. "Me anyway, I can't wait to see your body form under this baby. Our baby."

"If it's a boy I hope he doesn't inherit your bad temper." she teased him.

"Reason why I want a girl." he said. "But given your character it could fall on us."

"You're lucky I'm too comfortable to move, otherwise I'll punch you in your face." she warned him.

In the evening, during dinner !

"How do you want it announced ?" she asked.

He shrugged. He really had no idea. He had called Hondo after they returned from their walk on the beach, and had reassured him that Chris was fine and that they would be back to work the next day, without going into details. It was not on the phone that we announced to his family that we were going to have a baby.

"Normally, we should wait the three months but, with our job, I cannot stay on the sidelines without arousing suspicion." Chris said. "So unless you take some time off until then..."

"If it's just between the team, Hicks and us for two weeks, that should do it." Street said. "Or we can ask Dr. Keysler to give you a two-week break. You have a vitamin deficiency."

"It is tempting, even if staying at home for two weeks could kill me." Chris said. "But, let's face it, Dr. Keysler has me arrested for two weeks, we have to tell someone the real reason."

"We could only talk to Hicks about it." Street said. "He's the boss, and he'll have us covered until you finish your first term."

It wasn't such a bad idea, and after a five-minute call with Dr. Keysler, who was still on call at the hospital, Chris and Street were given a two-week sick leave for the mom-to-be. Reasons ? Vitamin B12 and gastro deficiency. Chris hoped their friends wouldn't mind them for lying about her medical condition.
