Chris stayed three more days in the maternity ward. Doctor Keysler was very pleased with her recovery from childbirth, and she gave the couple permission to return home with their baby. During those three days, Chris had been visited by Erica, Rocker and his wife, as well as Commander Hicks and Lieutenant Lynch. She had been very surprised at the time, but hadn't shown it.
"Take some time to get in shape, Chris. Your place will be waiting for you when you return." the Commander had assured hier.
As for Street, he had two weeks of paternity leave. Erica would join the 20-Squad until he returned from his leave. The rest of the team had come back once to see them at the maternity ward, just like their companion. They were also surprised to see Charice, Hondo's mother, as well as Buck Spivey and Mumford. If all these visits had made her happy, Chris only wanted one thing : to find the comfort of her home and especially her bed.
"We're home." Street laughed, when she let out a powerful yawn.
He parked the car in its usual parking spot, and turned off the engine.
"You're okay ?" he asked her.
"Yeah, I'm just tired." she answered.
"As you fed Dani before we left the maternity ward, you will be able to sleep." he said to her. "And Dr. Keysler said there was no point in straddling nursing times… it feels weird to say that word."
"I think it's very cute." She unbuckled her seat belt and opened the door. "Come on, let's go home."
When she opened the back door, Dani was fidgeting a little but not grumpy. She chattered quickly and yawned. Chris smiled and took the car seat while Street took their things from the trunk.
"Do we have what it takes, to assemble the bed and all the rest ?" Chris asked, once in the elevator.
"I think so." he says. "I would call Hondo or Luca if necessary."
"We would also have to adapt our bed, if I want to keep her with me." she said, before yawning.
The elevator stopped at their floor. Street slipped the key in the lock once outside their apartment door, but it looked like someone was already inside. That's weird. He took out the key, turned the handle and opened the door. Luca came to meet him.
"Hey, you're just on time." he said, a big smile on his face. "Welcome home !"
"What are you doing here ?" Street asked, before entering. He closed the door behind his women, and he noticed that there was the whole team, as well as the companions. "What are you doing here ?"
"Well, we decided to give you a little surprise." Luca said.
"My God it smells divine." Chris breathed.
Hondo was in the kitchen with Nichelle.
"I made you my famous okra." he told them. "You are hungry ?"
"Yes !" replied Chris.
"It still doesn't tell me what you're doing there." insisted Street, putting the bags he had in his hand in a corner.
"Come, you will understand." Luca said.
Perplexed, Chris and Street followed him to the nursery. On the door, in colorful letters, was written Dani's Room. Luca opened the door wide and stepped aside to let the young parents enter. Chris had to put the car seat near the door, so as not to accidentally drop it. Gosh ! The room was completely made. The changing table, a small library on the side filled with children's books. Everything was set up. There was even a rocking chair that sat enthroned by the window. A window where a beautiful purple curtain had been hung.
"Uh, the crib…"
"He's in your room." said Luca, who had knelt down to watch over his goddaughter as the parents recovered from the shock. "I hope we haven't overstepped by doing everything for you, Jim."
"What no !" said the latter. "I…I was planning to call you to see if you could give me a hand, but I didn't expect you to take the lead."
Deacon arrived and stood in the doorway of the bedroom.
"We thought it would give you one less thing to think about when you get home." he says. "We know that if the job had not been so busy in recent weeks, you would have taken the time to do all this." He encompassed the nursery with a wave of his hand. "Afterwards, if you want us to change the location of the furniture…"
"No, it's perfect." said Chris, moved.
The tears flowed despite her.
"Damn hormones !" she muttered.
"You should put her in her crib, and come and eat while she sleeps." Luca said, standing up.
"Yeah, good idea !" Street said.
He lifted the car seat with one hand, and took Chris's with the other and led them to their room. The crib was on the side of the bed where Chris slept. How did they know ? She couldn't tell. Once Dani was in her brand new bed, the young mother stayed up watching her sleep. Having to leave her to go to another room worried her a little. A lot, actually. As if he felt what she felt, Street hugged his wife against his chest in an attempt to soothe her, not noticing that Luca gently closed the door to give them some privacy.
"Well, that gives us one less thing to think about." he said, making her laugh. "I feel both relieved and disappointed that I didn't take the time to do everything myself."
Chris turned in his arms, and cupped his face with one hand.
"Don't be, please. You've been very busy at work, and if it's any consolation, I'm glad you preferred to stay with me in the maternity ward. I felt more reassured with you by my side."
He leaned down to kiss her.
"I love you !"
"I love you !"
After a final kiss and a reassured glance at their sleeping daughter, the couple joined their friends in the living room/kitchen. Chris' stomach awoke to the delicious wafting smell of okra, which Hondo was pouring into several bowls.
"Do you mind if we keep you a little company ?" Tan asked.
"No not at all." Street replied. "We're not going to kick you out after what you did, even if we don't have enough chairs for everyone."
"We'll manage." Deacon assured them.
"Come on, come sit down." Annie said pulling the chairs around the table.
They sat around the table, others hoisted themselves onto the stools at the kitchen counter, and the rest sat on the couch. The first bite made Chris and Street groan with happiness, but not only. Everyone greatly appreciated this dish made by the team leader.
"Hondo, you are a damn great cook." Bonnie complimented him.
"Thank you." he says.
"By the way Chris, any news from your aunt ?" Annie asked.
During their second visit to the maternity ward, Chris had told them about her aunt's behavior during her own visit.
"She sends me messages to apologize, but she always adds something for the baby." Chris said.
"I never thought your aunt would act this way." Luca said. "And that Lucia becomes the nicer of the two."
"All is forgiven with Lucia, and she is dating someone right now." Chris said. "My aunt will eventually understand and stop sending me all this advice that I didn't ask for."
"Maybe she should see a shrink." Ally said.
Chris does not contradict her. Maybe seeing a shrink would open her aunt's eyes. Maybe she should say a word to her uncle so he can convince her to give it a try. From the parental bedroom, tears broke the troop's lunch moment.
"Stay here." Street told Chris, wiping his mouth with a napkin. "I go."
He got up and walked towards the bedroom.
"I feel like I'm going to have a blast spoofing him." Luca said.
"Be careful not to overdo it, because he won't miss you when it's your turn." Chris told her.
Street surfaced a few minutes later, her princess in her arms.
"Is she having trouble going back to sleep ?" Chris asked, reaching out to take her.
"No, she had to be changed, that's all." Street said, handing it to her.
"We won't bother you very long." said Annie, who began clearing away the empty bowls.
"Oh, leave it, I'll take care of it." Street said.
"No way." Hondo said. "We take care of it."
The whole team put their hands together, and they left when the kitchen and living room were clean of leftovers from lunch, reminding the couple to call them if they needed anything. While having her daughter in her arms, Chris yawned tiredly.
"Oh my, go to bed, mom !" Street, who had locked the door after the team left, told her.
In the bedroom, Chris dropped Dani into her crib, kicked off her shoes, and hoisted herself up into her own bed. She lay down so that she was facing the crib, which Street gently moved closer to Chris.
"You stay ?" she asked him.
"I'll get our phones." he answered.
He returned two minutes later with their cell phones, and two bottles of water, which he placed on each nightstand. Lying down in turn, he modeled himself behind his wife's back and freed her neck of her black hair, which had grown to the middle of her back, and kissed her hollow. He saw her smile, and her breathing slowed down, a sign that she had fallen asleep. Leaning on his left hand, Street preferred to stay awake a little longer. His daughter had fallen asleep as quickly as her mother, and he could only marvel at this painting. He was the father of a beautiful little girl, whom he would love and protect all his life. Just as he would love and protect his wife and their future other children !
...
Epilogue !
Ten years later !
So much had happened in ten years.
Four months after Dani was born, Chris made her return to S.W.A.T., and she was welcomed there with open arms by everyone. It had taken her a little time to adapt, but she had regained her former shape. When the phone rang in the middle of the night, it was either her or Street who would get up and meet the team at the response site, and the other would meet them in the morning after Dani was dropped off at daycare. A real family routine had settled in, and they had managed to find a balance between work and family life with a baby. The older Dani grew, the more awake, curious, and adorable she became. After the baby girl's fourth birthday, Chris became pregnant again, and a few months later gave birth to a baby boy they named Nate Luca Street. It was when their son was born that Chris decided to leave the field and retrain. She had accepted Ally's offer to partner with her at her gym to teach boxing lessons. Especially since when Dani was seven, and Nate three, she got pregnant again with a baby girl, whom they named Tanya Kay Street.
The time came when Hicks retired, and Deacon inherited his position as Head of S.W.A.T. ! Hondo and Luca also retired from S.W.A.T. shortly after the birth of their respective sons, but remained in the force by becoming an instructor at the Police Academy and S.W.A.T.
Street became 20-David, and Tan his second, which the latter himself had preferred, despite his seniority on Street.
As for Chris's family, they had regained normal relations with their aunt, who, over time, had come to admit that she had been wrong to act as she had done with her niece and her daughter. She had been forgiven by Lucia, who now worked with her husband, the young Starbucks waiter turned veterinarian.
Street lost his mother after she was released on parole. She had not changed, as she had been found dead of an overdose just weeks after being released. Although he was heartbroken, Street knew he had made the right decision in cutting ties with her. It was sad, but given the circumstances, he didn't regret anything, except that she didn't have enough strength in her to resist and really change.
Parking in the driveway of his house, which he and Chris had bought before Nate was born, Street got out of the car, and circled the house, landing in the bustling garden. His three children were playing with their dog, a Labrador that Chris had taken in after he retired from the police canine unit. Tanya was the first to notice him, and rushed towards him while shouting Daddy's home. He barely had time to kneel down when she threw herself into his arms. Then came his son and eldest daughter. Even the dog came jumping around them. Looking up, he saw his wife, who was holding their nine-month-old baby in her arms. Yes, they had ended up having a fourth child. Being both only child, having a big family was what they had always wanted.
