Adrien really liked the show, especially as someone with a superhero alter ego. He thought that having the villain, Vlad, be driven by love was extremely cliché, especially since he was actually in love with the main character's mom, but he mostly shrugged it off. Danny was right, Vlad is a crazed-up fruitloop.
Marinette was having a great time watching the show with Adrien. The more that the show focused on the difference between Danny Fenton and Danny Phantom, however, the more she thought she needed to tell him her identity. She mentally ran through the episodes of the show and wondered if there were any chances she'd have to tell him her secret based on an episode.
She couldn't immediately think of a time to mention her identity as she tried to think through the rest of the series as a whole. She knew that they could binge the rest of the series that day if they were willing to stay up late. She also knew that she wanted to tell him her secret as soon as possible.
She spaced out, getting lost in her own head while they watched the show. Next thing she knew, the show mentioned the 'C.A.T. Test' and Adrien made a joke about the fact that it was called the Cat Test. He mentioned that he would definitely pass that test and Marinette felt her breathing speed.
She took a deep breath to try to calm down. It was The Ultimate Enemy, she knew the episode by heart, but she hadn't seen it in years, not since before Chat Blanc. Marinette didn't know if she was ready to see the destruction of Amity Park on the screen. The villain arc episode, Danny gets rid of his humanity and becomes evil.
It was familiar in the worst possible way and Marinette didn't know if she could make it through the episode without crying. Ladybug told Chat Noir about Chat Blanc years ago when she was having almost daily nightmares. "I can't do this," she said almost silently to her boyfriend, "I don't think I can watch this episode."
Adrien quickly paused the show when Clockwork was on screen and she was already feeling overwhelmed. It was Bunnyx, Clockwork was Bunnyx and Marinette felt like the trauma she'd been dealt years ago was nothing more than an episode of a tv show. She felt lightheaded and wanted to throw up, despite not feeling that way in years.
It was her response to Chat Blanc. She would regularly wake up in a cold sweat, crying, and wanting to scream or throw up over the destruction of Paris. She wasn't going to throw up, and she knew that, but that didn't help with the dread that she was feeling. "-at's wrong, princess?"
She didn't respond. Kwamis, she didn't just want to tell him her secret because of a panic response, but she needed to tell him. She couldn't get out any words in response to his question, but tears dripped from her eyes. She couldn't unglue her eyes from the screen of the television and the time travel ghost on the screen.
"Chat Blanc," she said cryptically. She felt Adrien tense slightly at the sound of the name. She could tell he was wondering why she knew that name. "This episode is Danny's Chat Blanc and I don't think I'm ready for that." He needed to know what she meant by that, he needed to know how she even knew about that, but he knew he couldn't rush her.
If Ladybug telling him about Chat Blanc years ago was any indication, this wasn't something that he could just pull out of Marinette. She needed to tell him about what she meant at her own pace and he was willing to be patient with her for as long as she needed him to be no matter how much he felt his heart pounding in his chest. He did, however, start to gently rub soft circles over her back in a silent show of support.
"This wasn't how I was supposed to tell you," she almost muttered. She was barely loud enough for him to hear what she was saying. "Chaton, I'm so sorry I haven't told you already. I've been wanting to tell you for weeks and I wasn't supposed to tell you when I'm panicking, but I can't just sit here and watch this."
"I'm Ladybug," she continued, "I'm your partner a-and I thought I was over the Chat Blanc of it all, but clearly I'm not." She swallowed her saliva and looked specifically away from the television screen. "I-I can't watch this episode when I know I'll be comparing it to Chat Blanc the entire time." She stood up from where she was sitting and wiped away a tear that slipped from her eye.
Adrien was stuck in his seat, stunned by the revelation of his girlfriend's identity. He almost wanted to believe that it was a joke because there was no way he was dating Ladybug, who had dated her significant other for years by the time he met Marinette. Marinette, who had just gone through a breakup when they met.
Marinette, who panicked because she was stuck inside of a box with him during an Akuma attack. Marinette, who knew so much information and had so much respect for every hero on the team. Marinette, who was easily able to 'convince' Ladybug to get Carapace to help with Adrien's birthday, then borrowed the mouse Miraculous to set-up the celebration.
Marinette, who was in tears because she was thinking about Chat Blanc. She knew about Chat Blanc and that was all the evidence he needed to believe her. Ladybug barely told him, her partner, about his own akumatized self, there was no way she would have told a civilian, even if the two of them did happen to be friends or something.
Adrien stood up a short while after she did and he couldn't make out the words she was saying, but he was intimately familiar with how both Marinette and Ladybug spiraled. Now that she opened his eyes, he could see that the spiraling was the same, regardless of which girl was dealing with it. He put his arms around her and she let out a choked sob.
"I'm s-sorry," she sobbed into the front of his t-shirt. He barely noticed the tears that leaked through to his skin as he held her, his girlfriend, his partner, in his arms. "I'm so, so, sorry. You deserved to know in a better way and I wish I could have set up something special for you because you d-deserve something special."
He held her a little bit tighter. He kissed the top of her head, unsure of what else to do and he whispered soft reassurances to her. She didn't think he knew just how much being reassured that he loves her meant to her in that moment. She had been half terrified that being Ladybug was going to ruin their relationship, or that lying about her identity after she learned his would ruin what they have, but he seemed happy to prove her wrong in that case.
"My princess," he whispered to her, "my Bugaboo, my Ladybug, I'm here." He genuinely wasn't sure if that would reassure her or not at that point, but he needed to talk to her, to let her know how much he cared about her. "I'm in love with you and I won't let anything change that. I won't let Chat Blanc happen as long as I can avoid it. We don't have to watch this episode, we don't even have to watch this show right now, if you're not comfortable with it." He switched his kisses from being on the top of her head to placing a few on her forehead.
He took it as a good sign that she wasn't dissociating like she had done in the past, but the sound of her crying was breaking his heart. He was keeping an eye open to make sure that no black butterflies were making their ways into his apartment and he saw a red blur fly out of Marinette's bag and over to Plagg.
Adrien held her for a while longer as they stood in the middle of his living room. He was thankful that no akumas showed up that day and he eventually heard Marinette's crying lighten up. He told her that they were going to skip the episode and he played the next one instead, The Fright Before Christmas. It was entirely out of season to be watching in May, but that just made it even better to watch at that point.
They got to Flirting with Disaster and Marinette felt Adrien's heart start to race at the scene of Danny asking Sam to hold onto the class ring he was trying to give Valerie. She knew that he was just a romantic softie and that was one of the things that she loved the most about him. She quoted along with the show, "who the heck is Wes?" and he played with the loose tendrils of hair resting around her face.
"Danny and Sam have to end up together, right?" Marinette could hear the pleading tone in Adrien's voice as he practically begged for confirmation. She smiled for what felt like the first time in hours and nodded against her spot on his chest. "Spoilers! Marinette, you can't just spoil this show for me." From the tone of his voice, Marinette could tell he was joking and that was something she appreciated after everything they'd talked about a few episodes before.
"I didn't say anything," she claimed in response. She rose up far enough to give Adrien a brief kiss on his cheek. "I won't spoil the show for you, minou." She nuzzled into him and he held her a little bit tighter to himself, enjoying the feeling of her resting on his chest. They kept watching the series and Adrien found himself feeling more relaxed than he'd felt in a long time.
Marinette was happily quoting along with the rest of the show as they watched and Adrien was surprised and kind of impressed by the fact that she seemed to know every interaction between Sam and Danny, especially by the time they got to season three. Apparently, in season 3, the writers ramped the love story between the two characters up to 11, and Adrien wasn't disappointed.
By the end of Urban Jungle, Adrien could barely keep his eyes open and they had to wait to finish off the series until the next day. Thankfully, the next day was Sunday, so the two had the entire day to just be lazy and watch the show together like they had done for most of Saturday.
