This is it! The final chapter of The Getaway and what may be the final time I ever post on FFN. Please stick around afterwards, though. I do have an announcement at the end. For the last time, please enjoy! :)
Epilogue
Sarge's POV
From: Red RSFD
To: Fudge Rossi-Topolino, Ramone Rivera, Luigi Topolino, Guido Rossi, 5 others
Subject: Hello
Dear Sarge, Fillmore, Luigi, Guido, Fudge, Flo, Ramone, Lightning, Mater, and Sally,
We have all missed you so much and are looking forward to seeing you soon. (That includes Jennyfur, Fudge. I know she misses you.)
I'm afraid life in Radiator Springs has been rather dull for us, but your mail has kept us plenty busy for the past couple of weeks. We can't wait to hear all your stories in person when you get back to town tomorrow. Sheriff and I were discussing it earlier and if you're all planning on returning to the Freewheeler Islands, then maybe we might tag along next time. :) As long as there's no fighting this time.
See you soon.
Red
"Ladies and gentlemen", a voice announced over the PA, "this is the final boarding call for Flight A113 to Miami. Repeat, the final boarding call for Flight A113 to Miami."
"Residents of Radiator Springs, here on the double!" I ordered.
For once, all of my friends emerged from the gift shop where they were buying snacks for the flight and last minute souvenirs and gifts for Red, Sheriff, Lizzie and even Jennyfur (I'll let you guess which one of them was buying gifts for Jennyfur). Well, almost all of them did. I took a head count and wounded up with nine, including myself. I knew right away who was missing.
"Where the hell is Fillmore?!" I groaned. "Do I need to ask them to page him again?!" I recalled having to do that at the airport in Miami on the way here.
"I'm right here, man!" a familiar voice spoke up behind me.
I jumped a mile as Fillmore appeared from the line of people ready to board the plane.
"You're ready to go?" I couldn't hide my surprise.
"You might wanna close your mouth before something flies into it", the hippie teased me.
I rolled my eyes. "If everyone's ready, let's go before the plane leaves without us."
"Okay, but first..." Ramone got out his camera for a departing shot of the group like he had done at the airport in Velo City.
This time, I felt that I could smile. Despite everything, it had been a great trip! I had had fun relaxing by the ocean and playing with the Blumenthal-Dunns. I was really going to miss them. I could only hope that they really would visit Radiator Springs someday.
"Well, this is it" McQueen murmured as we boarded the plane. "Our vacation is truly and officially over."
"Yeah, back to reality", Ramone sighed.
"And back to my depressing life of quiet desperation", Fudge added. I think that was a reference to one of the crappy TV shows she watches.
"Don't cry because it's over; smile because it happened", Flo pointed out. She paused and added, "But I have to admit, I'm glad we're leavin' at night. Can you imagine how awful it would've been to leave with a blue sky and sunshine?"
"On the bright side, we'll get to see Red, Sheriff and Lizzie again soon", Sally reasoned.
"And I can finally change my paint job!" Ramone added happily. He had been sporting his island-themed paint job for two weeks now. It was torture for him to wear the same paint job for more than one day.
"Well, we'll be back", I assured them all. "We promised we would be, but right now, we're holding up traffic." I gestured to the people behind us trying to get to their seats. "So, let's move!"
McQueen laughed. "Some things never change."
"Fudgie? Are you sure you are going to be okay?" Luigi quizzed her when her dropped her off in her seat. I rolled my eyes, knowing that McQueen was right.
"I'm sure", she assured him. "I'll probably sleep most the time." She yawned.
"As long as you are sure..." Luigi began uncertainly.
"I can take care of myself for a little while, PapĂ . When you were mad at me, I never once forgot to take my medication."
"Okay", Luigi sighed, smiling and giving his daughter a kiss. Then he made his way to the seat next to Guido, across the aisle from mine.
"Well, this is it, man", Fillmore murmured. "Our last look at the Freewheeler Islands."
"We'll be back", I reminded him.
"Yeah, but when?" he responded.
Before I could answer, the plane came over the loudspeaker, announcing the flight as Flight A113 to Miami followed by the safety instructions. To my astonishment, Fillmore was actually watching the demonstrations. He caught me looking at him and smiled.
"What? I can take care of myself, man. If Fudge doesn't need Luigi to coddle her, I guess I don't need you to coddle me."
I shook my hood in disbelief. "This vacation really did open me up to new experiences!" I remarked as the plane nosed into the air.
I looked around at the rest of my friends. They seemed to be doing all right, unlike the last time we flew. Luigi had opened a book. Guido was just staring out the window. McQueen, Mater, Sally, Flo and Ramone were already making plans for the return trip. Up ahead in the human section, I could see that Fudge had broken out her journal and was writing.
Me? I looked past Fillmore to gaze at the islands, which were already dark from the night sky and growing smaller and smaller out the window. Finally, I watched as the islands disappeared into the clouds.
Fillmore caught my eye and smiled sympathetically. "We'll be back, man", he repeated my words. "We'll be back."
The End
I thought about doing a sequel, but I fear it might be too similar.
Anyway, since I think this might be the last time I ever post on FFN, I wanna thank all my faithful readers and reviewers, including, but not limited to (in alphabetical order): Agent Sandra Cartrip, Bluestar of Thunderclan, Bolote, Colonel Beanbags, Fallpower999014, Foxy Hedgehog 777, GracieDragonet-Loves-Pixar, oolguy17, PixarKatze, SarahSarahBoBarah97, SV and Tula2010. I don't know if any of you guys are still reading this, but if you are, thank you.
I may possibly be disappearing from FFN, but I am planning to stick around to read and review other works. I have also established myself on AO3 . Life Could Be a Dream is already up, so please check that out. Although, some versions of my stories will be a little different. Some changes are big; some are small, but I hope you like the new versions.
For the last time, please review.
