My favorite kinds of stories are the little ones where I have an idea in the morning and then a finished product by the evening. Anyway, I thought this was a funny concept.
This story runs with the idea that Wasabi, Honey Lemon, and GoGo got that Bragg Tech job and moved in together in Austanbul. It also features a beloved headcanon of mine that I don't get to write much outside of Angel of Vengeance (new chapter coming soon-ish) and the Floresabi saga- Trans Wasabi. Check out Labels if you want to read the latest in the Floresabi saga :)
I hope you enjoy!
GoGo slunk out of her bedroom into the kitchen/dining room combo looking more tired than when she'd gone to bed.
"I miss The Lucky Cat," she grumbled.
"I've got you covered," Wasabi said instantly, "What're we drinking today, ladies?"
"Just a coffee, with a little cream, please," GoGo said gratefully.
"Coffee with cream and sugar, thanks!" Honey Lemon requested as GoGo sat next to her. GoGo leaned over and kissed Honey Lemon's cheek and then took the box of cereal that was sitting on the other side of her.
"Good morning, sleepyhead. How are you feeling?" Honey Lemon asked her girlfriend.
"Pretty good, all things considered. I don't love working late but it'll pay off."
"You're already leaps and bounds ahead of us at Bragg Tech," Wasabi said, setting out three clean mugs as well as the creamer everyone liked, still a polished barista from his time working at The Lucky Cat.
"Don't sell yourself short, Wasabi," GoGo chided, lighting up a little when Wasabi handed her her mug of coffee and sat down with his own a few moments later. Honey Lemon, after wiping off the coffee condensation from her glasses, observed the pair.
"I was a little worried about us sharing an apartment in Austanbul but you guys work surprisingly well together. Is this really the first time you've been roommates?"
"Yeah. I mean we thought about it when we first left high school, but we wanted our own spaces."
"I always forget you guys go way back," Honey Lemon said, with a twinge of jealousy that she quickly tried to shake off.
"You didn't miss much," Wasabi laughed, "Just our awkward phases."
"I'm sure you didn't have an awkward phase," Honey Lemon whispered to GoGo who shrugged and winked at her.
"Oh, and there was that year we dated," Wasabi added thoughtfully, taking a sip of coffee as Honey Lemon nearly snorted cereal milk out of her nose.
"You guys dated?!"
GoGo and Wasabi glanced at each other.
"Yeah…?" It wasn't a big deal to either of them, their high school days were barely worth a mention.
"I thought you said you'd never dated any guys," Honey Lemon said, still shocked by the discovery. Now Wasabi and GoGo exchanged another look and GoGo let out an awkward little laugh.
"I was wrong, sorry. I forgot that I dated Wasabi when we were in high school."
"Hm." Honey Lemon couldn't understand how you'd forget anyone you ever dated, especially not if that person was the only guy you'd ever had a relationship with.
"It's no big deal, right, Wasabi?" GoGo asked.
"Yeah, you have no competition from me," Wasabi laughed.
"Oh, yeah, I know, I'm not jealous or anything. I'm just surprised I'd never heard about it before. It's impressive that you guys were able to be friends and date and then still be friends after you broke up."
"Well, it was a pretty mutual break up," Wasabi said, "GoGo realized she was strictly into girls and I…"
Wasabi took a deep breath and shook off his nerves, "And I realized I wasn't one."
Now Honey Lemon's brows furrowed until understanding reached her eyes, "Oh!"
Wasabi looked a little embarrassed, "Yeah. We dated before I transitioned. GoGo and Tadashi were the first people to know that I wasn't a girl. Obviously, they supported me, but it also changed GoGo and I's relationship. I think I was too relieved that they accepted me as a trans man to have any hard feelings about the breakup."
"Well, your friends will always accept you," Honey Lemon said.
"I'm sorry I never told you," Wasabi said meekly.
Honey Lemon shrugged, "Why would you need to tell me if you didn't want to? I know that I'll never be part of that past you had with GoGo and Tadashi and that's okay. That also means that I'll only ever have memories with you as Wasabi. You don't owe me your past or your identity unless you want to talk about it."
Wasabi smiled.
"I really think you didn't miss much. I'm glad we know each other now, though. I'm glad that we're friends."
"Me too. You're both my favorite roomies ever."
"You like me more, though, right?" GoGo interjected, having followed along with the conversation but not interrupting until Wasabi was done coming out.
"Hm, I don't know," Honey Lemon teased, "You don't make me coffee."
"I could. I would, for you."
"Perfect. Wasabi and I could use a refill."
"Don't forget the sugar," Wasabi laughed.
"I'll drown you in sugar," GoGo threatened, but she got up and got more coffee for all of them. They'd made quite a home here, peaceful and cooperative. They were a team, though their histories and identities varied they worked well together. And more than a team, they were a family and nothing could ever change that.
