Chapter one:

"You lost. And that means you take the dare to explore the abandoned mental asylum. It's just outside of the city and take a camera with you to record your exploration through it. To show us the inside and to prove you actually did it. So include yourself in the video."

Frisk lets the voice of one of her friends, from the day before, fade away from her mind. She is alone here and has to bring back video footage or photos, of more than three rooms, to show them the next time she sees them. She is wearing her long sleeved blue and pink slightly puffy shirt to keep herself warm, a pair of brown pants, and black runners on her feet. She looks up to the large mostly intact but still obviously abandoned building. Her friends words, about the proof, ringing in her head as she clutches the camera her mother gave her to her chest. She also has her over the shoulder black bag of a few things just in case. She swallows harshly then heads through the hole in the side gate. She sets foot on the front lawn of the place and looks around.

The area is not too well lit in some parts but there are some lights on.

Frisk figures that it must be that they are still connected to a power source. She wonders how long the power source can run. She looks to the building and as the sun is setting she can see that there might be lights on inside.

Abandoned sure but not powerless.

Frisk shrugs it off as out here they might have an individual power source that is still running. She heads towards the front doors and tries them finding them locked. "What did I expect?" She questions herself stepping back only to look up slightly at the two large steel doors. She looks to either side looking for another way in. She spots a rather long ladder leaning against the wall.

It's old but will do the trick as it leads to a hole she can crawl through. It might have been left behind by some construction workers, there's even a bunch of metal rods scattered on the ground past the ladder.

Plus entering on an upper floor will give her more chance to get more evidence.

Frisk grabs either side of the ladder and raises a foot. She watches her foot as she tests out the first step. She feels it bend slightly but it still holds. She looks up and begins climbing figuring that it's in good enough condition. She is about half way up when one step snaps. She squeaks in surprise clutching the ladder as her feet scramble to get a hold. She finally finds the step and pauses for a moment slightly panting from the moment of fear. She manages to calm down and keep climbing. She eventually finds herself at where she can enter which is at the top of the ladder. So she'll enter on one of the uppermost floors. She crawls inside and stands only to look around.

One light is on above Frisk and darkness is everywhere else except for through a door. There a light can be seen that shows what looks to be a hallway.

Frisk begins walking towards the hallway... though stops and jumps back when something moves. She looks down spotting someone in a small wheelchair missing their legs.

This person looks like they might be twelve years of age. This person had come from the darkness into the light. The person has blonde messy hair that even frames his face, and dark eyes. This person is wearing a green shirt that covers all it needs to. The person smiles widely. "Howdy! I'm Flowey! Flowey the flower!" The person speaks in a males voice indicating his gender.

Frisk blinks in confusion at this as clearly the other is not a flower. "Um, hi?" She cautiously greets wondering if this is some kind of joke.

"You're new here aren't you?" Flowey guesses. "I haven't seen you around before. So that must be right. Golly you must be pretty scared. Don't worry. I'm going to teach you how to survive down here." He informs Frisk. "What's your name?"

"I'm Frisk." Frisk explains.

"Frisk. That's a nice name." Flowey suddenly picks up something from the seat of the wheelchair. "These are... Friendliness pellets... Yeah. They will help you. Try to catch as many as you can." He throws it and Frisk ducks to dodge.

She turns and notices a small rock landing on the ground. She turns back to Flowey who looks disappointed.

"You're supposed to catch them." Flowey informs her grabbing another one. "Here. Let's try again." He throws it once more though this time it's lower.

Frisk jumps to the side barely missing it.

Floweys smile turns dark and sinister. "You know what's going on here? Don't you?" He questions. "Well guess what!" He reaches behind him pulling out a bigger rock. "You won't escape! With a human soul I could do whatever I wanted! Even leave this place! Goodbye!" He is about to throw it when a long stem lighter is turned on and moved towards him. He screams as he drops the rock and wheels away into a different dark area of the room.

Frisk turns as the lighter is turned off. She spots an older female this time. She guesses the other is maybe sixteen years old.

This other female has decent breasts, short bobbed styled straight white hair that's messily cut, pale skin, empty toilet rolls panted white attached to a head band by tape to be horns, a long white hospital gown with long sleeves has purple paint splashed on it, a winged symbol painted in white, no shoes or socks, and brown eyes. "Oh what a horrible creature to torment a child." She states looking to where Flowey has run off to. She then turns to Frisk. "Do not be afraid my child. I am Toriel. Keeper of the ruins." She explains to Frisk. "Though some of the others call me Goat Mom. You can call me that if you want. Come my child. I will lead you through the ruins." She reaches out gently taking Frisk by the hand. "This way." She leads her into the hallway.

Frisk turns to glance around. She notices a part of the hallway has a caged door blocking it. She also notices down the other way is a few rooms down a straight hall. She also notes how somehow something feels strange about the caged off area. Yet she doesn't get that feeling from here. She turns as Toriel takes her a little down the hall then they stop. She looks ahead noticing nails on the floor.

The nails appear to be glued there facing upwards.

"The ruins are filled with puzzles." Toriel explains to Frisk. "One day you will be able to navigate them but for now it's too dangerous. Stay with me." She starts walking towards the nails as Frisk tries to escape. "Do not worry." She steps on some.

Frisk glances to them hesitantly only to realize that the ones Toriel is on are fabric fake ones. She feels better and follows Toriel across the pattern of the fake nails.

They make it across safely.

"There will be others who might come and try to attack. Though they don't truly mean any harm. Please, if you get attacked just spare them. Or fight them until they give up. Okay?"

"Sure." Frisk agrees unsure about it all.

"Thank you my child." Toriel sounds so relived at this.

The two continue a little further before they stop once more.

Frisk looks for a puzzle though she doesn't see any. So she turns back to look to Toriel.

Toriel lets go of Frisks hand. "I'm sorry. But I must ask you to walk this hallway alone. You need to be independent sometimes child." She races off down the end.

Frisk begins walking the hall glancing around herself. She decides to go to a door and opens it. She peers inside finding a small five year old child hopping around like a frog. She closes the door to that. She heads down further not sure if she should explore the other rooms. She pauses as a noise comes from behind her. She turns around to spot the child that had been going around like a frog. She looks past the child seeing the door is now open. She looks back to the child who stares at her. "My you're a very nice Frog." She tries complimenting the child not sure what else to do.

The child didn't really respond but gained a blush. "Ribbit." The child says before turning and hopping away back into the room.

Frisk feels relief when the child leaves and she continues down the hall. She hears a bang then click as she spots the door, the one where Flowey was in, slam then probably lock. She can't go out that way anymore. She will probably need Toriels help if she is to escape. She turns and takes a picture briefly remembering some sort of proof. She doesn't want her friends to come in here themselves. She also doesn't really want to have to come back here. She'll try to take some videos when she remembers or can. She'll also need to find a moment where she can safely try to use her phone. She's got to call for help. She walks along down the hallway. She looks to the next door and spots a button beside it.

'Push this button. Toriel.' Is written just above said button.

Frisk doesn't trust this mad woman but she feels her curiosity nagging her. So she pushes it. She hears a click that she figures must have been a lock on the door. She swings the door open carefully to see what's inside.

Inside are two children.

One has a white sheet over its body with eyes and a mouth cut out. Though the cut out eyes are more like a curved slanted line, and it's cut out mouth big as if screaming or yawing. Though it could be meant to be crying as there are two drawn circles just below the eyes. The child is also wearing fake dragonfly like wings. Along with pipe cleaner antennas with pompous on the ends. There are black worn down shoes on the child's feet. The child has rather skinny arms and legs. The child might be seven if Frisk had to guess. This child seems to be shying away from the other who tries to go to talk.

The second child looks to be maybe five years old. This child has two pillows attached to his own torso, the front one has a large eye drawn on that extend to his face. So he looks like he has a giant single eye drawn on him. His pants are black though there is white paint that draws a smile of sharp teeth. His shirt is white and long sleeved though the torso area is covered by the two pillows covering the back and front of said area. He has pipe cleaners tied together then tangled in his very knotted, and very crazy, hair like horns. He is slightly chasing the other as if wanting to talk.

The first child notices Frisk and heads for her almost as if seeking protection.

The second child hangs back to simply watch.

The first stops in front of Frisk looking up to her through the holes. Though the child's eyes are shrouded in the shadows and hard to see. This child seems to be searching for comfort biased on the hunched position, plus hands playing with each other.

"There, there. It's okay." Frisk gently pats the child's head. She isn't sure what else to do so she forces a slightly awkward smile.

"I'm sorry..." The child sniffles. "Forgive me. I have no choice. I can't handle this." The child shoves past Frisk only to race to the door where the frog child was.

Frisk can now turn her attention to the other child here. She moves inside the room to reach the door in order to close it. She curses that it opened inward. She looks down as the child comes to be right below her.

The child doesn't move his head to even look up at her. "Please don't pick on me." He tells Frisk who blinks at this.

"Um, okay. I won't."

"Finally someone gets it!" The child sounds so happy and runs off back into the room.

Frisk spots something and she moves closer in the room to investigate. She finds that it is a realistic toy knife. She picks it up putting it in her pocket. She leaves the room and is finally able to close the door. She moves on ahead to find her way down the hall. She enters another room where she finds a table with some cheese on it. She approaches and finds the cheese looks and smells old. She wonders if she can get rid of it for them. She grabs a stick and tries to push it towards a mouse hole she spots... Only to find it's stuck to the table... So she decides to continue on ward dropping the stick. She checks out the room a bit more until she comes across large spider webs. She finds them in the far corner of the room. She notices a sign and she squints to read the bad handwriting. "A spider bake sale? And they sell Spider donuts and Spider ciders." She turns to glance to the webs and notices that the tops go to a hole in the wall. She supposes that it's perfect for someone to pop out of.

Though not climb out of it very easily.

Frisk contemplates if it is worth it to get either of the items. She gets a gut feeling that she should. So she tosses some old change onto the fake web.

Someone comes out the hole half way revealing a spider costume. They put a donut on the web then grab the change, and duck back into the hole.

Frisk picks up the donut to examine it. She sees that it looks like any ordinary donut.

It has a vanilla looking dough, a purple glaze on top with small white lines that look like spiderwebs. It feels a little stiff but it's in better shape than Frisk thought.

Frisk, after taking a picture including the web, puts it away in her bag for a now not really trusting what could be inside it. She leaves the room after that and continues down the hall. She can see a stack of cardboard boxes up ahead. She figures she must be almost there if the door by the boxes at the end doesn't lie. She happens to look down to notice dirt in-front of a door. She also spots three rocks. She crouches first a better look. She sees a line so she tries to recreate it with the other rock. She gently slides one of the rocks across the dirt to make a line.

"What's that? The rocks are moving again! But some don't like being pushed!" A voice speaks from the other side of the door just before a lock clicks.

Frisk gets to her feet and tries the door. She finds it is unlocked so she peers inside. She sees a possible ten year old.

This ten year old has on a poorly made carrot suit while holding some carrots. The child seems to be talking to the carrots. "You're not veggies. You talk. But you should eat your greens. It's a part of a complete breakfast." The child slowly turns to look to where Frisk is. "Veggies can't talk. She hasn't pulled us out of the ground yet. It's okay we don't have to face that stranger. Though hopefully she eats her greens."

Frisk slowly closes the door to this room leaving the child alone with the carrots. She keeps going this time deciding to stick to a straight path... Until her path is blocked by someone laying in front of her.

It's a fourteen year old teenager with a white bedsheet. This teen has big round eyes cut out with an oval mouth. "Oh, am I in your way. I'm sorry." The teen gets up. "I'll move. Don't worry I'm a ghost. Nothing can kill a ghost. I'm sorry. I'm rambling a lot. I'll let myself go invisible then move so you can get by. Oh, I'm so sorry." The teen stands there for a moment then leaves going to another room.

Frisk keeps going finally making it to the end. She pauses and Toriel comes from behind a stack of boxes.

"Do not fret my child." Toriel tells her. "I was just hiding behind this pillar. I'm sorry but I needed to test your independence. Sometimes I might have to leave and you might need to be on your own. Though you have done very well." She gently takes Frisks hand once more and leads her through the door at the end of the hall.

Inside the place is actually well kept. There's a fire pit made of stones right by the window. There's also a few old chairs, a small bookcase with a few books and two beds.

"Welcome home." Toriel lets go of Frisks hand again. "I hope you'll find it cozy here. Go ahead and take a look around. Let me know if you need anything." She goes over picking up and book and sitting down in a chair to read.

Frisk heads to look out the window first. She can tell that it has to open if Toriel uses it for the smoke. She however realizes that it's a long way down. So there is no way she is going to get out this way. She moves away from the window and goes over to the beds. She notices one has clearly been used and the other hasn't.

Though both beds are pretty clean.

Frisk moves on to the books seeing some titles that look like cook books, as well as a few books taken possibly from the doctors office. She checks the fire pit and notices a recipe for a large pie sitting there.

"Are you interested in eating? I can make you something." Toriel suggests as Frisk turns to her upon hearing her. "Do you like Cinnamon or Butterscotch?"

Frisk gets up to her feet. "Well Butterscotch is nice."

"Alright. I'll be back." Toriel heads for the door though pauses. "You don't mind Cinnamon either right?"

"No." Frisk isn't sure what's going through her mind. She also isn't sure that she should try to guess what's going on in the woman's mind.

"Okay, I was just asking." Toriel leaves after that.

Frisk tries to see if there is enough blankets to tie together to escape. She sighs as she realizes that there isn't. There's just two blankets here and that won't get her far. She lays down on the bed that's unused. She checks her cellphone quickly while Toriel is gone. She doesn't care about what others might think of her not complete Inc. the dare, as she wants to get out of her alive. She hopes she can contact someone now while she's alone. She frowns as her phone shows no battery life. She forgot to charge it, and now when she needs it more than ever it's dead. She puts it away for now. She'll just have to find another way out and she might as well sometimes record if she remembers. She just hopes that there's a clear path somewhere to the exit, or at least a window she can use in her escape. She stares at the ceiling for a bit unsure what to think. She never thought that she'd end up in a situation like this. She just hopes she'll be able to get out of here.

After awhile Toriel returns so Frisk pretends to be asleep.

Toriel can be heard moving around then the smell of fire; though it's probably just her lighting the fire to cook. She opens the window and after a little bit the smell of an actual yummy pie can also be smelled.

Frisk pretends to sleep for a bit longer until she hears a plate being put down. She opens her eyes slowly and turns noticing a large slice of pie on a plate. She also spots it's been wrapped to protect it. She picks it up admitting it smells nice. She puts it into her bag not sure if she can trust eating it, like the spider donut. She could get it tested after she gets out. Letting her see what might have been added to the pie. She turns and notices a rather large pie on the fire pit that no longer has a fire. She looks for Toriel only to see her reading again. She'll have to ask about the caged door. She'll get some more pictures after she gets passed this area. She doesn't want to be seen as crazy, however she also wants to survive this. She moves over to Toriel.

"Ah. Hello my child." Toriel greets. "Did you have a good rest?"

"How can I get out?" Frisk questions Toriel.

"Out? Now why would you want that?" Toriel questions as Frisk almost takes a step back. "You have everything you could ever want here. I can even teach you."

Frisk knows that it's likely the only way out is to pressure this crazy lady. She is scared of doing so or even trying to sneak out. She doesn't want to make the crazy lady angry. She has no idea how the other will act. "I want to go home."

"Don't be silly." Toriel tried to assure her with warmth. Though her smile falters slightly. "You are home. Home in a safe place."

"Let me leave." Frisk quickly moves back fearfully as Toriel stands up.

"There's something I need to do. Stay here." Toriel hurriedly heads out of the space going into the hall.

Frisk chases after Toriel. She has to make sure that the other isn't going to block her way out.

Toriel pauses halfway down the hall. "Go back inside." She demands of Frisk before moving a bit further down. She pauses again hearing Frisk still follow her. "I have to do this. It's for your own good." She keeps going and is almost there.

Frisk has to stop her as she realizes that this could be bad. She needs that way to get out of here, or else she'll be stuck here! "Wait!" She calls out reaching towards Toriel.

Though Toriel continues down the path without looking back.

Frisk chases after her. "You don't have to do this!" She pleads just hoping that somewhere in her mind she'll understand.

Surely even Toriel knows deep down that she's not supposed to be stuck in a place like this. She sighs heavily and glances slightly over her shoulder. "Go back to your room." She keeps going getting so close to where it is.

However Frisk won't relent. She can't relent. "Destroying the way out of this area won't help. It'll only make things worse."

Toriel stops by the way out as Frisk slows to a stop in worry. "It seems that I cannot talk you out of this." She turns around to look to Frisk. She looks determined almost glaring. "If you want to leave so bad, then you need to prove yourself to me. Prove that you can handle yourself out there." She pulls out a box of something getting Frisk even more tensed up. She lights a match then tosses it at Frisk.

Frisk jumps out of the way then stomps on it. She doesn't want this place to burn to the ground. She notices another one coming right for her. She moves quickly out of the way only to race back to stomp it out. She tries to walk closer to Toriel hoping to get her to stop. She then has to jump back to avoid a lit match. She stomps it out and looks to Toriel. "Toriel. You were very nice. And I'll be grateful for that." She dodges more before stomping them out. "Please. Toriel. Look into your heart. You've shown me that you have one." She moves forward in a dodge. She slightly glances back worried. She then yelps leaping back as a lit match hits her cheek. She could really feel the heat and thinks maybe she got a minor burn. She stomps the two out then approaches Toriel.

"Stop and fight me." Toriel demands lighting another one. She even grabs a crumpled piece of paper lighting it with the match, then tossing it; barely missing Frisk who manages to stomp it out. She clearly is trying to make this a more real fight. She is using matches for most of the throwing to keep Frisk from getting too close. She seems to try to keep the balls of paper to act as stronger attacks.

"We don't have to fight!" Frisk pleads with the other as she takes a few steps closer. Her eyes watching for the next match. She is on time with the next three throws. She feels like she is getting better at this whole dodge and stomp routine. "Listen to my words. You know it's true."

Toriel hesitates before lighting another match. She tosses it and at first Frisk gets ready to dodge... Only for the match to land beside her.

Frisk stomps on it and gives a smile to Toriel.

"What are you trying to prove?" Toriel demands squinting her eyes in suspicion at Frisk. "Why won't you fight me?" She gets more matches lit only to miss on each toss.

Frisk takes some steps closer. She stops halfway at seeing another match being grabbed. "Toriel, I'm sorry. But I guess I am trying to prove that I can handle myself." She'll have to play along in order to get out of here. She feels like she is so close to making a breakthrough. "I need to go."

For a moment Toriel is quiet before she sighs putting the matches away. "I suppose you're right. I can't keep you prisoner here in the underground. You probably have a life to go back to on the surface."

"I'm sorry but the surface is where I need to be. I don't belong down here no matter how much I'll try."

"I understand." Toriel approaches Frisk only to kneel and hug her. She lets out a soft sigh as Frisk hugs her back. "You're ready to go out there. And I do wish you the best of luck. Though beware of Asgore. He will try to kill you." Her words worry Frisk though she is well aware that she must keep going.

The two of them pull apart.

Toriel stands up adjusting her clothes. "Goodbye my child."

"Goodbye Toriel." Frisk feels a little sad leaving Toriel who was actually a good woman. She just had to look past the delusions that these people have surrounded themselves in. She watches the other leave for a bit before looking to the door. She takes a breath hoping that she can handle what's on the other side. She heads on through going past Toriels area that was called the ruins.

AN:

Okay so this story I've worked on and off for a long time. I've done my best to keep it to how I wanted it to go. I will admit that I hit some bumps in the road with this before truly finding my passion to keep going. I almost never finished this story but something kept drawing me to it bit by bit until I wanted to work on it more and more. Hence why it ended up complete plus posted.

So hopefully as you'll continue reading the other chapters youll still enjoy it. The road bumps may have changed it a little though I did have an idea on the atmosphere of this story. So I went based off that while working on it on and off.

The whole story from start to finish is written on my phone so hopefully I caught the autocorrects.

Enjoy the chapters ahead!
