Chapter four:
"What's that smell?" The female questions, her long blonde hair drapes down her shoulders.
"Where's that smell?" The male also questions and his shorter hair almost reaches his shoulders.
The two walk around sniffing and Frisk remembers the sign.
Frisk drops to the ground and rolls around only to spring to her feet.
The two stop by her.
"It's here! The smell is here!"
"It makes me want to eliminate you." The male adds and Frisk tenses.
The female swings her axe and Frisk stumbles forward, tripping on her own feet trying to dodge, only to pause. "It smells like a puppy." She mentions and the male sniffs Frisk.
"It is a puppy! What's a little puppy like you doing out here all alone?" The male tilts his head in curiosity.
Frisk isn't sure what she should say so she just raises her hands and pets them.
The two look at her with matching wide blue eyes.
"The puppy pet me!"
"Me too!"
"I didn't know that dogs could pet other dogs!"
"This opens up a whole new world!" The girl barks excitedly and wags her butt.
"Thank you strange puppy." The male then chases after the female as they leave into another room.
Frisk looks ahead and that's when she sees figures that look like Sans and Papyrus. She heads forward only to stop seeing some grey squares between her and them. She guesses that they do something important. She does notice that whoever made this must have put a lot of time, and ability, into it. She has a feeling that there's only one of these, as the parts probably wouldn't be found so easy being trapped here.
"Okay. Human. Listen carefully. Since this one was made by Dr, Alphys!" Papyrus tells her getting her to look up to him. "For you see this is what all the tiles do. Pink tiles have no effect and can be walked on freely. Green tiles also have no effect. Red tiles act as solid walls. Yellow tiles force you back to the last tile you stepped on. Orange tiles change your flavor to 'Orange.'. Purple tiles act similarly to ice; they force you to the next tile in the direction you were facing. Additionally, purple tiles change your flavor to 'Lemon.'. Blue tiles vary in function depending on the following factors. If the blue tile is adjacent to a yellow tile, the blue tiles act identically to a yellow tile. If your flavor is 'Orange,' the blue tile acts identically to a yellow tile. If neither of those conditions is met, the blue tile acts identically to a pink tile. Do you understand human?"
If Frisk is truthful she's actually really lost. Though she doesn't want him to have to say all that again. "Yeah."
"Okay! Then let us begin!" Papyrus messes with a box that has several switches on it.
Frisk waits with nervous anticipation as she shifts where she stands. She doesn't know who this Alphys is so she has no idea if she can trust them. She isn't sure if this is rigged in someway that the brothers can't control.
The squares flash through the colors then settles on one pattern. A row of pink tiles lined with red tiles.
Frisk tries to cover her mouth to try to not laugh. She can't help it and laughs into her hands. She stops as she sees Papyrus head off towards the large doors at the end of the hall. She hurries over the tiles and once she makes it across Sans turns the tiles off. "Papyrus! I didn't mean to hurt your feelings!" She calls after the other then feels a hand on her shoulder. She turns with her eyes meeting with Sans's own.
"He did that on purpose." Sans informs Frisk who blinks at him. "He saw that you were nervous. Told you he wasn't dangerous." He then heads off to join his brother.
Frisk looks back at the puzzle.
Papyrus did that on purpose? Well it seems that other than a possible eating disorder, delusions, and maybe a few other things he is actually really nice and kind of normal.
Frisk turns away from the puzzle and takes walks just a little further before stopping. She had stopped as Papyrus had called out to her for her to do so.
"This is my final puzzle!" Papyrus explains with a wavering smile. "It is not as easy as it might seem. And you will truly be skilled if you make it past this!" He moves one hand from behind his back revealing that it's holding a rope. He raises his hand causing objects to come down from above.
Frisk looks up and her eyes widen in terror as she sees all sorts of knives, a rusty chainsaw, and planks of woods with nails poking out. Her heart pounds in her chest as she prays to whoever is listening that she will make it out of this alive.
"I shall activate it!"
For a moment or two they just stand there looking at each other from across the way.
"Um, bro? You sure you activated it?"
"I will. I'll..." Papyrus looks to the weapons then to Frisk. He sees her trying to work out how to get past it all. He remembers that the items are sharp which could kill her if she's kit wrong. "No!" His loud statement is heard making Frisk jump. "This is much too easy!" He pulls it away tying the rope to a hook on the wall. "The human could have easily gotten through! You win for now Human! Nyeh heh heh heh heh!" He turns opening one of the doors and heading through.
Sans follows after him.
Frisk lets out a heavy sigh of relief and goes to the doors. She moves past them through the open one. She blinks as she finds a large room that has bright cherry dirty painted walls. She swears it could have been an activity or games room as the walls look like a daycare wall. She also sees an assortment of blanket and pillow forts made like homes.
There's a few who are walking around talking to each other. The way they behave youd never know that they have some deep mental issues.
Frisk moves along past them all just wanting to get out. She tries to keep her head down and doesn't take any pictures. So she doesn't get attention drawn to her. She sees a man with a brown bear hoodie on sitting by a potted leafy plant, a plant surrounded by little boxes. She also spots a girl in a bunny onesie with a stuffed rabbit, and even rocks wearing hats. She feels some relief at seeing Sans and Papyrus looking at a box of papers.
The box of papers happens to be sitting by a pillow fort. There is another box next to it though it doesn't show signs of having anything in it.
Frisk hurries over to them and they turn hearing her footsteps. She wants to be with them. She feels as though she is safer with them. If she gets stuck here she'll just stick close to them. She really doesn't trust the others.
Who knows what demented things they'll do.
"Hey kid." Sans greets as Frisk stops by them. "Welcome to Snowdin. A cozy little town in the cold." He gestures around them. "Well I'm gonna head inside." He goes through the entrance of the pillow fort.
"My brother is such a lazy bones." Papyrus groans then turns to Frisk. "Well, you seem to be doing well so far. You might reach Asgore in no time at this rate." He blinks as he sees Frisk look scared. "Is something the matter?"
"Is Asgroe a scary per... Monster?" Frisk quickly catches herself reminding herself that they see themselves as monsters. Though a thought occurs to her.
Surely not all of them thought themselves as monsters. So how did all of this happen? And what happened to anyone else? To the staff? Maybe she shouldn't overthink it.
She doesn't want to scare herself even more, as she needs to try to keep her thoughts leveled. She feels as though it is how she will survive this whole thing.
"Asgore? Well he is strong." Papyrus admits before smiling despite Frisk being worried. "However he's really just a big softie! He'd probably take you to the barrier himself if you asked nicely."
The barrier... It must be Frisks way out!
"Thanks Papyrus."
"Anytime human." Papyrus heads off after that. He seems to make a beeline for the area on the other side of the room.
Frisk begins walking in that direction and she turns spotting some old tables. She can see that it looks like it's being used with old chairs for a restaurant or bar. She doesn't pay much attention to anyone she sees there right now. She just wants out. She turns away and continues going after Papyrus.
Surely he's leading her to where she needs to go next... Right?
Frisk slows to a pause as Papyrus throws powder, that Frisk can tell is flower by the bag he has, in the air.
"Human..." Papyrus begins as he is now only a figure in a cloud of dust. "You have done well to make it this far. However! You have now reached your final challenge, before you may proceed further underground." He points to her or at least she thinks that he does. "For it is I the Great Papyrus! Who will battle you and capture you! And become a famous royal guardsman!" He shifts down picking something up as the dust starts to clear.
Frisk tenses as her heart skips a beat.
Wasn't Papyrus like her friend? Why did they have to fight!?
Frisk almost wanted to smack herself in the face. She does have trust in Papyrus and Sans, but she must remember that they still are mental disturbed people. She has to be careful about any attachments. She could have her feelings hurt, since there's no way that they can ever see the world in the same way. She brings her focus back to Papyrus who is now visible and holding a large dirty bone. She can't tell if its dirty from being dug up, or from having all the meat taken off then placed in an unclean area. She isn't sure though all she knows is that she likely will need to dodge pretty soon here.
Papyrus starts by throwing smaller bones Frisk hadn't spotted in his one hand.
Frisk leaps to one side then the other to avoid them. Not surprised that they are also dirty. She notes the different sizes which tells her that this could very well be from a dug up grave.
Whether it's animal or human it's a bit hard to tell.
Frisk brings her attention back to Papyrus as he swings the large bone he's holding. She falls down to a squat as it sails past her head. She gets up to her feet and tries to move closer to Papyrus. She had heard that the blows might do less damage if she gets close; to someone with a weapon like a hammer, though a bone is pretty close to one in her mind.
The swing hits on her left shoulder causing her to cry from the pain.
Frisk really does believe that the hit could have been worse if she was backed away. She moves to grab at the bone in an attempt to stop him. Her adrenaline pushing away the pain in her body. She uses her strength to yank the bone from his hands. She swings it hitting him as he is slightly knocked to the side.
Papyrus blinks looking impressed. "Wowie human. You've got some great moves."
Frisk wants this battle to end. She wants out of here, and she doesn't doubt that she'll have to fight. So if she can end this battle early it'd be wonderful. "We don't have to fight." She tries to plead with him clenching the bone just in case. "Let's be friends." She doesn't care how much she has to lie. Plus she thinks if he believes they're friends it'll make things easier.
"You mean it?" Papyruss eyes light up. "Of course I'll be your friend human!"
"Then we don't need to fight." Frisk tells him giving him a smile.
"Well I wouldn't want to hurt my friend." Papyrus agrees and Frisk drops the bone in relief. "But you gotta be careful human. Undyne is strong."
This worries Frisk. "Undyne?"
"Yup. She's the captain of the royal guard. I wanna be strong like her some day."
"Well you're definitely on the right track." Frisk tries to encourage him playing along.
"Be careful out there human." Papyrus steps aside and Frisk heads on past him. He watches her as she heads off further into the asylum.
Frisk notices hastily painted walls that are a darker colour. She supposes that it means she's in a new area. She blinks spotting something up ahead.
A table is placed with Sans sitting on a stool seemingly just watching the distance. Possibly a bit bored. A badly constructed roof above the table is supported by beams of wood; wood placed on either side of the table. It doesn't fully appear stable though Sans doesn't seem to mind. The wood has nails sticking out including bent ones from bad hammering.
Cautious though curios Frisk begins to approach. She seems to catch Sanss attention as he probably sees the movement. She offers a small smile in greeting, trying to not show she's nervous.
"Oh, hey kiddo." Sans greets rather casually with a smile of his own. "How's it going?"
"It's going alright." Frisk admits giving the other a small smile.
"Say, it's about time for my break. Wanna come to Grillbys with me?"
For a moment Frisk hesitates unsure if that's a good idea. She isn't sure she wants to go backwards. Though she also doesn't want to cause someone to possibly flip out then try to kill her. "Okay." She agrees though very hesitantly.
"Great! Come with me. I know a short cut. We'll be right to Snowdin in no time." Sans moves over to her and grabs her hand. He leads her in the direction of where he was. He takes her into a darkened spot where they squeeze into a small secret passage.
Though it is dark Frisk knows that Sans clearly has more room to move than she does. She knows this because of the condition he seems to be in.
After taking a few turns they come out to a dark corner in the place those here call Snowdin.
Sans leads Frisk to the spot with tables and old restaurant chairs.
Frisk realizes that Grillbys is the spot that looks like a restaurant or bar. She is taken along through it towards the tables lined up together. She glances around only to realize that she's seen most of those here. She remembers going against them before first reaching this part. She also spots those she doesn't know.
There is someone, female looking, with floppy bunny ears that appears passed out at one table. She has a dirty dark pink summer dress on with no shoes or socks.
Another is someone who looks like a creepy old man. He is sitting at the line of tables. He looks like someone that parents would tell their kids to stay away from, by looks alone. He is wearing a tan tank top, dark blue shorts, and old looking running shoes with the front parts cut off exposing his toes. His toes that look like they have some kind of foot fungus on each toe. He seems to have drawn scales on his body in sharpie stopping at the top of his neck. He is grumbling to himself though Frisk can't make out what it is.
Then there's a person standing by the line of tables at the opposite end of the old man, who has a damaged joke fake horse head mask on. He is wearing clothes that make Frisk think of mafia movies. He has on a tan button up shirt with a red tie, a black leather jacket, black pants, and black shoes usually worn by men in suits.
Sans let's go of her hand as they reach the centre area the line of tables. He climbs into a seat patting the one beside him for her to join.
Frisk does as he silently requests and sits next to him. She looks up to find a middle aged man standing on the other side of the tables. She is sitting right in front of him.
The man is covered in burn scars that look like his entire body had been on fire. He has a calm expression on his face as if none of it bothers him. He is wearing a white button up shirt with a black bow tie, a black suit like vest buttoned to leave a V neck on him, black pants, and black shoes that go with suits. He is cleaning a very dirty looking glass with what looks to be an old rag.
"This is Grillby." Sans explains to Frisk gesturing the burnt man. "As you can see he's a fire monster. He has to wear boots to go out in the snow. He gets damaged by water very easily, and snow is basically frozen water. Though because of this he just likes to let his business be open for as long as possible. To avoid the snow. Which is awesome for me as I can come here on my breaks."
The burned man called Grillby shrugs, before putting down the half cleaned glass to clean another.
"So what would you like? On me." Sans offers turning his attention back to Frisk. "He has fries and burgers. I'm not sure if you're of age to have the drinks he serves here."
"Just some fries is fine." Frisk admits not wanting to take a chance with the burger. She feels like fries are safer as the meat for burger could be questionable. She doesn't want to admit it but she is kind of hungry.
"Fries sounds good to me too." Sans agrees then turns back to Grillby. "Two orders of fries Grillz."
Grillby nods setting the glass he was cleaning down. He heads off to a door that he goes through with it quickly shutting behind him.
Frisk turns to Sans once more wondering if he had something he wanted to talk about.
"Say... Have you seen a talking flower?" Sans questions causing Frisk to blink.
A talking flower? Wait there was that person who introduced himself as Flowey. Maybe Sans means him?
"I'm not really sure." Frisk admits deciding to not really say yes or no.
"Heh. That means you probably haven't." Sans shrugs. "I kind of figured. Paps talks about this flower that talks to him sometimes. It's probably someone using an echo flower as a prank."
"An echo flower?" Frisk questions meeting Sanss eyes.
"Yeah. A flower that repeats the last thing it heard. They're usually found in waterfall." Sans explains and Frisk nods her head to this.
"Oh." Frisk says then turns as Grillby returns with their order placing it in front of them. "Thank you."
"Yeah thanks Grillz." Sans adds and starts to eat a fry.
Frisk tries one and blinks in surprise as it actually tastes good. She eats some more at this silently admitting she is hungry. She's feeling better at getting some food in her.
"Want some ketchup?" Sans offers her a bottle and Frisk shakes her head. "More for me." He shrugs and goes to pour some on his.
The cap falls off dumping a bunch onto Sanss fries.
Frisk pauses at seeing this realizing he had tried to prank her.
Sans puts the bottle down then he starts to eat some of his fries.
Frisk resumes finishing her own knowing that they're all weird.
The two finish up the amount that they're going to eat.
"It was a nice break." Sans slightly leans back and Frisk feels fear shoot through her.
What if Sans does ask her to help pay?
Sans must have noticed her fear. "Aw don't be scared kiddo. I said on me." He reminds her before looking back to Grillby. "Put it on my tab would you Grillz?" He gets a nod in response so Sans turns away. "Well I should get back to my post now. Thanks for the hang out." He then heads off.
Frisk lets him go and after sitting for a little longer she heads to get back to getting out. She hopes that it's not far away as she's not sure about what could be around the next corner. She makes it back to where she was not finding Sans at his post. She continues on past it wondering what could be waiting up ahead. She approaches a place where the ground and walls are all painted messily like water. She sees rocks ready to fall and ropes attached to floorboards that are lifted. She is going to have to try to dodge the rocks to get past here. She takes a breath and slightly dashes through it. She triggers rocks that come flying towards her. She keeps running trying to not trip on the ropes. She leaps for safety and gasps as she lands on her chest. She turns to look back.
There are rocks all over and some even broke the floorboards.
At least she made it. Frisk gets up to her feet and takes a moment to settle down. She then heads away from that spot careful to watch out for anything. She finds a box and opens it only to find a bloody tutu inside. She decides to leave it there. She continues forth and finds a spot with tall poles.
The poles have leaves on it as if to create plants or to make it more like grass.
Frisk has no choice but to go through. She heads towards it and pauses as she hears footsteps. She looks up as a voice comes from a ledge just out of reach; even is she were to jump. She spots someone covered in boxes painted grey like armor, and a long red ponytail coming out of the box meant to be a helmet. She can't tell the persons she wither adult or teen.
Papyrus approaches the slender figure in boxes. "Undyne." He greets causing the other to turn to him. "I am here to make my daily report." He tells the other who nods a go ahead. "Well there was a human. But they managed to get away. I did try to capture them." He ducks his head at hearing a growl come from the other, making Frisk worry. "They're not dangerous. Just-"
"Papyrus. It is our duty to capture this human for Asgore to use their soul." A female voice comes from the one wearing boxes. "And we cannot question it. It is for the betterment of all monster kind."
Papyrus is quiet for a moment though realizes that he can't argue with her. "Yes. I understand Undyne." He looks away slightly.
"Good. You can go off for now then." Undyne tells Papyrus who nods then dashes away.
Frisk tries to sneak through the space she's in... Only for the paper to rub together and make a sound. She freezes and sees that Undyne heard that. She crouches trying to hide in it better. Her breathing shallow as she tries to not hyperventilate. Especially when she sees Undyne pull out a weapon.
A spear painted blue and it has a round pole with two knife blades side by side, taped together, at the top.
Undyne glances around the area then lowers her spear after a moment. She turns and heads off stomping her feet as she goes.
Frisk waits a few moments to make sure that Undyne is gone. She then gets out of the fake plants. She turns hearing someone following. She finds someone a little smaller than her.
