The leather bound notebook had sat in a trunk in the attic since Luna could remember. It had been there when she'd been five and just learning her letters and how to spell her name.
"Has name on it!" she announced, holding up the notebook. Pandora had smiled, taking it from her fingers.
"It does, but that's not for you until you're older, my little Luna. It is a way to talk to your soulmate. They have a matching one, they can write their thoughts and those thoughts will appear in your book. The same for anything you write in it."
Luna had stared at the notebook, her mind whirling with things she wanted to write in it, things she wanted to draw. She had no idea what a soulmate was, but she wanted to share everything with them just the same. The notebook had gone back into the attic, in a locked trunk.
It had been there when Luna turned eleven. She picked the lock using magic and laughed at how well the spell worked for her. She was gifted in that way, little charms always seemed to work. It was anything larger that gave her a bit of trouble. She knew going to Hogwarts would help with that. She touched the leather cover, tracing her name. She was terrified about what was written in it, even more afraid that there would be nothing at all.
"It is yours, if you wish take it," her father said softly. Luna turned to him and gave him a smile.
"Not yet. There is so much I need to learn first," she said, putting the notebook down. She put her mother's wand on top of it. Both things were important and she knew she would be coming back for them. She locked the trunk and headed back downstairs, excited to start her first year of school.
The notebook was there, locked away, when she was stolen off the train her sixth year. She was thinking about it more and more lately. If she had it, could she have written her soulmate, could he have saved her? She knew her soulmate was a he at this point, there was nothing that said it, but she knew. She could feel him sometimes, or at least she thought she could. Was he thinking about her, writing in his book? That thought kept her spirits up as she was locked in the dungeons.
"Don't worry, we'll find a way out," she stated, looking at Griphook and Dean She was certain someone was coming, someone who would save them, but was it her soulmate? She couldn't tell.
Safe, she was finally safe. The war was over and she was back home for the summer. It was temporary, she knew that. She was going to help rebuild Hogwarts and then she'd graduate. This time, though, she couldn't let the notebook sit in the trunk any longer. She popped the lock, picked up her mother's wand. It felt warm in her hand. She knew that it was time to put her childhood wand aside, this one was choosing her. She slid it into her waistband and picked up the notebook. It felt lighter than she remembered. Slowly, she opened it and looked at the first page.
Dear soulmate,
this is incredibly idiotic. No one is going to read this.
Luna giggled. The handwriting was shaky, like her soulmate had been a child when he'd written it. That was all the first page said. She flipped to the next.
No one has written me back. This thing is either broken or I do not have a soulmate. I have told mother someone wrote, if I let her believe I have a soulmate, I will not have to marry the girl they have arranged for me. I have met her. Her head is empty and she is completely miserable at potions and Quidditch. I will not marry her!
Luna paused, thinking about his words. Arranged marriage? Her soulmate was most likely a pure-blood then. She'd never heard of muggle-borns doing such a thing, although she was certain there were muggle cultures that did have arranged marriages. He had mentioned Quidditch, so he was a wizard at the very least. The next few pages talked about him playing seeker for Slytherin. That's when Luna realized that her soulmate was older than she, the only seeker that Slytherin had had during her time at school, save for the upcoming year, was Draco Malfoy. His soulmate was Ginny. That revelation had caused a huge screaming match and both the Gryffindor and Slytherin banners in the Great Hall being singed.
Luna stuffed the notebook into her bag. It was time to get going if she was going to catch the portkey to Hogwarts. Maybe she could find out who had played seeker before Draco? That thought made her smile. She was getting closer to finding out who her soulmate was. She knew she could just flip to the latest entry, write something herself, but that felt like cheating. She needed to get to know him this way before she could allow herself to write to him.
Rebuilding was a lot of hard work. It had been decided that schooling could take place while they were rebuilding and Luna had charms while repairing a wall. Professor Flitwick focused on charms that could strengthen the wall, could repair the damaged bricks, or could reveal structural damage that wasn't visible. After class, Luna curled up in a nook that hadn't been destroyed and read.
Mother has discovered no one is writing me back, that I do not have a soulmate. Maybe she just has not received her writing book? Mother has not told Father yet, but he will hear about this. I am terrified as to what he will do. Will he force me to marry her? Or will he allow me the time to find my soulmate? School will be ending next year and I am no closer than when I first received this book. Dear soulmate, I know I said this was stupid, but if you are out there, please, I need you.
Luna brought her fingers to her lips. He had needed her and she hadn't been there! She wished he would have dated the entries, she could have had some idea how long ago he had written this. There was no mention of the war, could he really have been at Hogwarts before then? Luna stashed the book and walked into the trophey room, looking at the Quidditch trophies and photographs from years past.
"Marcus Flint, no," she said. She had a feeling she would know him when she saw him.
"He was in Slytherin, so that does narrow it down some," she reminded herself, looking at the photographs of the past Slytherin Quidditch players. She had only looked at a few when Ginny appeared in the doorway.
"We're late for transfiguration," she pointed out. Luna nodded, giving the trophy case one last lingering look before joining Ginny.
Like the other classes, transfiguration was done with rebuilding the school in mind. They learned to transfigure things into tools, to change bricks to pillows and vice versa. By the end of the day, Luna was exhausted and collapsed in her bed, dreaming of meeting the man who had written to her, without even knowing who she was.
The months flew past, Luna learning everything she'd need to graduate, things that would be her exams. Some of it came easily, such as charms. Potions was one of the subjects that wasn't currently being offered because of a lack of a teacher and because finding a work space proved difficult. Luna didn't mind. She wasn't planning on pursuing a career that involved potions. She wasn't even sure what she wanted to do, be an editor for the Quibbler, or go on expeditions to see all the creatures the world had to offer. She continued reading the notebook, searching for clues as to her soulmate.
I am married now. She is not my soulmate, you are, but you have yet to find me or write back so I can only hope you are alright. My wife...those words hurt my heart. I do not like calling her that. I had no choice in the matter. We were married and soon will be starting to try and have an heir. I do know it will be difficult since we are not soulmates and do not have that bond. I do hope you have a good life, that you find someone that will love you as I do. I feel the hole in my heart where you should be. She could never fill it. I will be a good husband to her, as is expected.
Luna felt the tears welling in her eyes. Her soulmate had married! He was going to have a family, it was too late! She wiped the salty water from her eyes. Now what? She wasn't sure if she should, if she could, keep reading. The pain in her chest, the feeling of her heart breaking for someone she'd never even met. It was all too much. She put the notebook down and pulled her blankets tightly around her. She'd put it from her mind for now, focus on her exams. Yes, she'd find her way, without him.
She'd done it! She'd passed her exams with all Es and As. She'd known she could do it. She was packing up her room, deciding what she wanted to keep, to leave behind. She no longer needed her text books. Her fingers brushed against the leather bound notebook. Her name still engraved on the cover. She picked it up. He was married. She should let him know she was alright, that she'd be alright even without him. Breaking her own rules, she flipped to the last entry.
My dearest soulmate,
she has left me! I am free for now. I hope you survived the war. I did, despite everything. I know I should be dead, that my role in things should have brought me death. How I escaped is beyond even me. They are going to hold a trial for me to pay for my crimes. I do know I will not be sentenced to death or be Kissed. My former wife will speak on my behalf and so will my son. He is a good boy, my Draco.
Luna gasped, dropping the notebook. Her soulmate was Draco's father, Lucius?! It all made sense now, in some way. She'd known she would know him, knew she would feel complete finding out his name and that was true. She knew Draco had graduated with her, a lot of the students repeated their final year. Their parents would be arrive tomorrow to see them walk across the stage. Lucius would be there, if he wasn't in Azkaban. Luna grabbed a quill, dipping it in ink and quickly brought it to the next blank page.
My soul, she wrote, I am sorry it has taken me this long to reveal myself. There are so many reasons, but I wanted to know you before I wrote you. When I read you married, I lost all hope in the possibility of us. Now, now that you are free, I too am free to reveal myself. I will be graduating from Hogwarts tomorrow. Look for me, I will be wearing a large yellow flower in my hair and looking for you. If you are able to come, please write me back.
Luna watched the page, hoping and waiting for Lucius' handwriting to appear. It didn't after a minute, after an hour and she tucked the book under her arm, crying that she might have missed him after all this time. She cried herself to sleep and only woke when Ginny shook her.
"Ready?"
"Yes," Luna lied, rising and dressing. She made sure to put the flower in her hair in case had just hadn't been able to write. She joined her classmates in line, slowly being called by Headmistress McGonagall. One by one they were handed their diplomas. One by one, Luna looked out at the crowd, counting the people, looking for Lucius' flowing blond hair. She saw Narcissa watching. Luna couldn't help but smile at her, unknowingly, she'd allowed Luna to have a chance with Lucius. Finally Luna reached the center of the stage, she took her diploma, smiled at her own father and then noticed the movement in the back of the room. Her smiled widened as she stepped off the stage. Instead of joining her fellow graduates, she continued walking until she'd reached the back of the room.
"Mister Malfoy."
"Miss Lovegood."
"Please, you are my soul, you must call me Luna."
"And then to you, I must always be Lucius," he stated, taking her hand in his. She could feel the warmth of his touch, the electricity of their soul connection crackling as they watched the rest of the students, having finally found each other after all this time.
