Luna blinked her eyes open and stared at the white peacock sitting on her chest. With a sigh, she pushed it off. It squawked indignantly before landing on the floor.
"Thought you might have finally disappeared, and I'd have to go hunt you down across the world to find him, but you're still here. What does it mean?"
The peacock didn't answer as Luna got out of bed and started get to get dressed in her dress robes. She'd turned seventeen months ago, that was when the peacock, her spirit animal was supposed to lead her to her soulmate. That hadn't happened for some reason. Now, she'd finally done it, finished her schooling and was about to graduate from Hogwarts. She wondered if maybe the peacock was waiting for something?
"Going to follow me through the ceremony?" she asked with a laugh. No one would know if the peacock did follow her. No one else could see it. The peacock had been her constant companion since she'd been born. It had been a chick while she'd been a child. They'd grown together and Luna found it either adorable or quite irritating.
In response to her question, the bird just bobbed his head.
"Alright then, maybe he'll be there, is that why you're still here? Am I finally going to meet him today?" she asked. Because the bird was a peacock and not a peahen, Luna figured it meant her soulmate was also male. She knew she could be wrong, and she wouldn't be upset if her soulmate was female, or both, or neither, but the bird was male at the very least.
"We're supposed to all meet in the Great Hall to help set up and to practice. This is one of the largest classes to graduate from Hogwarts in years," Luna said, mostly to herself. It was true. The year above her had returned for the most part to redo their last year since the war had disrupted everything. Luna didn't think about the war much. That had been the only time the peacock had vanished from her life, when she'd been in the cell at Malfoy Manor. She'd always wondered why he had left her, maybe the magic had had something to do with it?
"Here we go," she whispered, opening the door to her room. Ginny was standing there with an impatient expression on her face.
"What kept you?"
"The peacock."
"He's still not gone?"
"Nope, I think I'm supposed to meet him today, my soulmate. I think he's going to be here, at the ceremony," Luna said. The words felt certain as they left her mouth. There was a feeling of foreboding in the air.
"Really? But it's just going to be students and their families. Oh! Your soulmate might be someone's sibling. Have you met my brother Charlie yet? He's come in for the ceremony."
"I don't think your brother is my soulmate, Ginny."
"You never know! I mean, I never dreamed mine was Draco Malfoy, but the little ferret didn't lie about that. He's really turned around this year, Luna. I think maybe You-know-who really had more of an affect on him and his family than any of us thought. I heard his father was doing community work for the ministry now. Shame about his mum though, I know he would have wanted her to be here to see this."
"We all lost people," Luna whispered, thinking about how her own father didn't seem like the man he'd been before, how he was a shadow of himself and still couldn't look Luna in the eyes because of what he'd done.
"True, we need to get going or we're going to be late," Ginny said, grabbing Luna's hand and nearly dragging her down the stairs. The Great Hall was decorated in Hogwarts finery. Each wall was decorated with a large banner of one of the four houses. Inner house unity had flourished after the war, and people no longer stayed only with their housemates. However, for the ceremony, they were once again expected to sit under their own house banner. Luna gave Ginny a smile as she joined the Ravenclaws, all of whom ignored her.
Luna watched everyone else trickle in. The peacock curling up at her feet. Her soulmate wasn't here yet, she was certain of that. She'd always known it wasn't someone she'd gone to school with, that it was someone else, someone unexpected. Once all the students were situated, they started the practice, going up, giving a tiny display of flashy magic, being applauded and then shaking Headmistress McGonagall's hand. Luna had already planned her little bit of magic, creating a small peacock made of light. Hermione had given her the idea for the spell.
Once practice had finished, they ate a light brunch. Ginny had slid back next to Luna.
"Think you're soulmate's going to realize the peacock is for him?"
"He might," Luna answered. She was about to elaborate when the doors opened. The students' families started filing in.
"Oh, there's Charlie, come on Luna!" Ginny exclaimed, dragging Luna over to meet Charlie.
"Charlie, this is Luna!"
Luna watched the peacock walk around Charlie and then turn his head, snubbing the redhaired man entirely.
"And no, he's not my soulmate," Luna said, with a laugh. Ginny sighed.
"I had to try, didn't I?" she asked.
"You did. Oh, look, there's more people coming in now," Luna said, turning her attention to the rest of the people walking in. Her father walked over to her and put a hand on her shoulder.
"Hi, Dad, you remember Ginny?"
"Of course."
"Everyone! Can I have everyone's attention?" Headmistress McGonagall's voice announced. Everyone turned and faced the front of the room. "Good, students, please come to the front and take your seats. Everyone else please take a seat in back"
The room rearranged itself into two sections, one for the students and one for their families and friends. Luna took her seat, the peacock curling up on her feet.
One by one the students were called to the front. Luna watched the others go before her, thankful her name was in the middle of the alphabet. It gave her time to get over her nerves about doing her small bit of magic. She wasn't even sure why she was nervous, she'd done this spell dozens of times. Maybe it was because he was here. She didn't know who he was, but she could tell he was here.
"Miss Luna Lovegood!"
Luna rose to her feet almost in a daze and stood in the middle of the stage. She drew her wand, casting her spell. The tiny light peacock blazed forth, and for a moment, it merged with the spirit peacock, creating an even larger glowing bird. She heard a gasp from someone in the audience as the light faded and the peacock she'd created disappeared. With a smile, she shook McGonagall's hand and headed back to her seat, her eyes scanning the family section as she walked.
That's when she saw him, standing in the back of the room. Lucius Malfoy. He'd come to see Draco graduate. Luna felt her breath catch in her chest as her peacock ran down the aisle in the middle of the room and stood in front of Lucius. Luna gave the man a nod before returning to her seat to watch the rest of the ceremony. She could barely pay attention as the rest of her class did their bits. Finally it ended and Luna nearly jumped from her seat. She walked quickly over to Lucius, who was now also joined by Draco.
"I am to believe this is your soul creature?" Lucius asked, nodding the peacock who stood there too proud of his own good.
"You can see him?"
"I can, same as you can see the hare that races everywhere I go?" Lucius asked. Luna paused and looked as a white blur came to a stop. It was indeed a long eared hare.
"I can. This means."
"It means we're soulmates," Lucius stated. Luna smiled slowly, nervously. She'd never thought her soulmate might be Lucius Malfoy, one of the Death Eaters who had held her prisoner, although, she was starting to realize there might be more to it than that, at least if she believed Ginny.
"I think, it might be a good idea for us to take some time to get to know one another?" Lucius offered. "I'd like to invite you and your father to the manor for tea, this Saturday?"
Luna looked to her father, he'd joined them as well as Ginny, who was kissing Draco and pretending not to listen. Xenophilius nodded.
"I would love to, I look forward to seeing you then," Luna stated, her heart feeling lighter in her chest now that she'd finally found Lucius, now that she finally knew what the peacock meant.
