"You made your choice," she whispered, looking down at the ring on his finger. She'd known he would go back to her, they had been married for so long, been through so much together. What was she to try and stand in the way of that?
"I did," he answered, sliding the silvery ring from his finger and looking at it. It sparkled in the lights of the manor. "Luna, Narcissa was my past, but she's not my future. I might have loved her, in a way. It was an arranged marriage, something common at the time."
"Still is in some circles," Luna commented, trying to not believe the words coming from Lucius' mouth. It couldn't be true, he couldn't have chosen her, could he have?
"People will talk, they're already talking about the fact she moved out."
"Let them talk then, let them post our picture on the center of the front page of the Daily Prophet. Luna, I know this isn't going to be easy. She didn't stand beside me when I was released from Azkaban the second time, after the war. You were there. You had no reason to be there, I was nothing but another prisoner to you."
"That's not true and we both know it," Luna whispered, reaching out and touching Lucius' arm. It was true though, she had been there for him when he'd been released. He hadn't been another prisoner to her, he'd been a friend, and then, afterwards when it was clear Narcissa was gone, more than that. Now she was back, begging his forgiveness. Luna hadn't even dared to hope.
"Maybe it's not, but Luna, this time with you, there's something that wasn't there between Narcissa and I, something that I never realized I was missing until I found it. Please, Luna, I love you and I do not want to lose you. I pick you, I will always pick you," Lucius said, holding the ring up and throwing it as far as he could. It bounced off the ground and into an ornate shrubbery trimmed to look like a peacock. "Do you accept me, will you accept me?" he asked, looking to Luna. She nodded, bringing her hand to his face. She stroked his cheek before standing on her tiptoes and kissing him.
"Always," she whispered, giving him a smile as he wrapped his arms around her. They stepped back inside the manor, Narcissa temporarily forgotten about.
