Connie sat in the airport, waiting for her flight to LA be announced. She had managed to get one last minute, after hearing the news about her mom. pulling her phone from her purse, she sent a quick text to mike explaining that she had to leave to look after her mom. pressing send she leant back in to the seat and closed her eyes. deciding she needed caffeine she stood up and walked through the terminal to a coffee shop and ordered a large cappuccino and a blueberry muffin. sitting at a free table, she pulled open her bag and pulled out her laptop. opening up her internet she quickly went to her social media. Looking through her pictures she stopped on one of her and mike stood, looking at it closely she could see mike was not looking at the camera but at her. shutting the lid down, she shoved the computer back in to the bag and tried to push her feelings to the back of her mind. sure, she knew he liked her but he was or is her boss it would be wrong. massaging her temples as she felt a headache coming on, Connie sighed. life felt so complex and she felt like she did not know what to do.
mike cutter walked down the steps of the court, when his phone buzzed. pulling from his inside jacket pocket, he opened up the message and read it. Shoving the phone back in to the pocket he cussed softly as he ran down the last few steps and tried to hail a cab. unsuccessfully. he was on his tenth attempt when one stopped. pulling open the door he jumped in pulled the door close.
"JFK as quick as you can," he said before pulling the phone back out and called the office to clear the rest of the day. scrolling through his phone he stopped on Connie's phone number and dialled but it went through to voicemail.
"Connie, please call me don't get on the plane, I need to tell you something. I love you," he said trying to hide the desperation in his voice. for two years he had tried not to act on his feelings, trying to keep a professional distance, now with the chance of losing her, he did not want to let her go without letting her know how he felt. looking out of the taxi window mike sighed, he felt that he would not make it in time. as usual the traffic in New York was at a standstill. Mike was brought back to the present by a beeping, pulling out his phone he saw it only had 1 percent battery and then it went dead.
"Dam," he said opening his briefcase and chucking the phone in.
looking up at the board, Connie sighed her flight had now been delayed by two hours. great she thought. Pulling her phone from her purse to call her brother to let him know the flight had been delayed. Ending the call, she saw a missed call from mike and a voicemail message. holding the phone to her ear to listen to the message. Hearing mike let his feelings be known somehow made her feel different. I mean she did like how he commanded a court room. The was times when she felt like banging his head together with jacks, but the was now she did not know what or how to feel it. life was a mess; she did not know what to do. her mom and family needed her. resting her head in her hands, as she felt her headache getting worse.
"Ladies and gentlemen, unfortunally flight LA7465 to Los angles is over booked and we are looking for volunteers who are happy to be off loaded and booked on to the next available flight. if you wish to do so then please make yourself known to the gate agents," a voice came over sound system. looking at her boarding pass and started thinking.
The taxi stopped outside the airport and mike thrust a handful of notes to the driver before running in to the terminal but looking at his watch he saw that the flight Connie had said she was on would have already left. walking over to the information desk he inquired about the next flight to LA. Walking to each of the airlines he got the same message that they were all fully booked. feeling dejected he walked outside.
many hours later, sat in his office, mike looked over the file for the case he was prosecuting when a knock on the door brought him back to the present. not looking up he gestured for the person to come in.
"Give me a minute," he said as he crossed something out and added another line.
"I thought you could use some dinner," a female voice said.
looking up, he saw Connie holding a bag of takeaway.
"Connie, I thought-"he said as she put the bag down and started to pull out
"I took an offer to be offloaded, things needed to be said, and that could not happen on the phone," she said passing mike a carton before pulling the chair from the front of the desk to the side and sitting down. "I got your message, "she added smiling at him.
"Connie-" mike started to say before he was stopped as Connie held up her hand before leaning across and placing a kiss on his lips.
they ate in silence after the kiss, before tiding up the food cartons and pulling on coats ready to leave. slipping his hand into her mike led Connie to the lifts. once in the lift, mike pulled Connie in to an embrace, holding onto her, he kissed her. it was not like the sweet soft kiss that she gave him earlier, this one was full of desire and need. Connie responded by wrapping her arms around his neck pulling him closer to her. they jumped apart when the lift doors opened on the ground floor. grabbing her case Connie quickly exited and made her way to the doors, followed by mike.
they barely made it back to mikes place before desire hit again. they decided on his place when they got in to the cab she had hailed. mike shoved the door to his apartment open and allowed Connie in before shutting the door and the world out. helping Connie with her coat and hanging it on the coat stand, mike placed his hand in to the small of her back and guided her to the open plan lounge. as she sat on the couch, he wondered in to the kitchen and opened a bottle of wine, pouring it in to two glasses. passing one to Connie he sat down next to her. taking a sip, Connie said " I still have to go to LA. my mom had a stroke." taking the glass from her hand, mike placed his and hers on the table and pulled her towards him.
"Then let's make what time we have count," he said kissing her softly before standing up and taking her hand pulling her towards his bedroom.
Connie woke to sun streaming through the windows. she almost forgot where she was until a voice said "good morning," pushing herself to sitting up she pulled the top sheet up to cover her and saw mike stood in the door holding a cup of coffee. Passing it to her he sat on the side of the bed and looked in to her eyes. the spell between the pair was broken by a phone ringing from somewhere else in the apartment. mike strode out and answered it. Connie could hear him answer the questions and him saying that that he would be there in an hour. slipping out of the bed, Connie began retrieving her clothes before pulling them on.
"I best go, I was rebooked on a flight this morning," she said before placing a kiss on his cheek. " I will be back I will let you know the details," she said weakly smiling as she left.
