2025:
Sydney was noticing something had been off with Emmy in recent months. On one hand, she had been in high spirits since she became engaged to Olive. On the other hand, she had been starting to appear to be more tired, and was occassionaly gone to places unknown that none of the Amigas knew about. So one day Sydney decided to do some snooping to figure out what was going on. However what she discovered shocked her. Suddenly Emmy entered the room with the intention of doing her homework, but as she did she saw Sydney on the table looking at her with a severe look on her face and several bottles of pills before her.
A confused Emmy then said, "What... what's going on?" "I hoped you could tell me." Sydney said severely. A still confused Emmy said, "I... I don't understand." Upset Sydney got up and pointed to the bottles as she said, "THIS!" A nervous now Emmy said, "W.. where..." Furious, Sydney yelled, "THEY WERE IN YOUR BACKPACK! Emmy I thought we were over this! Didn't your learn your lesson? Didn't we agree we were going to help you if you got stuck?" Tears began to run down Emmy's face as she said, "It's not what you think..." Then Sydney bitterly said, "No? You're not supposed to be taking anything. I'm calling Dad right now." Then Emmy yelled, "NO! I'M TELLING YOU IT'S NOT WHAT YOU THINK!" Then Sydney yelled, "THEN WHAT IS IT!?" Emmy sat in her bed on the verge of crying as she said, "I... I have... Oh God. I have... leukemia..."
Sydney felt the world shatter all around her as she said, "W... what? that's... that's impossible..." Emmy shook her head and said, "Wh... when... you know... they did... blood tests after I was in the hospital... they found out..." Sydney felt her hands trembling as she said, "This... this can't be... Emmy, does Olive know about..." "YOU CAN'T TELL OLIVE!" - Emmy yelled. Sydney stood confused as she said, "Huh?" Emmy took a deep breath and said, "Until now... only your Dad and step-mom knew... and now you... but you have to promise me you won't tell Olive anything about this..." Sydney then said, "But... but you... her... I mean..." "NO! I forbid you!" - Emmy said crying. The brunette hugged the latina and said, "You'll be OK, we'll do it all..." Then Emmy said, "I... I'm... I'm on remission now... but... no one knows..." Sydney started to look optimistic as she said, "You mean you're not sick or anything? Then it might be gone." Emmy looked down as she said, "Maybe. The doctors said I might be done dealing with it... or it could come back suddenly at some point and... for all I know my life might end sooner than later."
Sydney looked shocked as she tried to comfort her friend by saying, "Don't say that Emmy. You're probably gonna live a long time. You got your wedding in just two months and..." Suddenly Sydney paused as a look of clarity went across as her face. She looked at Emmy with concern as she said, "Emmy... did you agree to get married to Olive before or after you were diagnosed with leukemia?" Tears appeared in Emmy's eyes as she answered, "It was... before. I... I was scared of dying before I'd get to experience marriage. So that's why I accepted Olive's marriage proposal. And I didn't tell her because I wanted any time I had with her to be filled with happiness and no worries." Then Sydney said, "But Emmy... how sad do you think Olive will feel when she learns you've been going through this all alone. Emmy... you have to tell her." Emmy sat on her bed silent, as she began to consider her next course of action.
*Twelve Months Ago:
Emmy sat in a doctors' office with Sydney's father Max, and Sophia's mother Angela sitting next to her. As the three sat quietly, Emmy's hand began to shake. Anegela gently grabbed Emmy's hand and said, "It's gonna be okay Emmy." Then Max said, "If you want, we can call Sydney and Sohia so they can be here for..." Then Emmy immediately said, "No. If you tell them, then they'll tell Olive and... she's got enough on her mind right now applying to colleges and being a perfect student." A female doctor then stepped into the room and said, "Hello Emmy. I'm Dr. Hamilton. So I have some rough news, but good news. The rough news is you do indeed have luekemia, but the good news is because we discovered it so early on, we have a number of treatments to help with..." Suddenly Emmy started breathing heavily as she said, "No, no, no, NO!" Then Emmy got up, ran into the nearby hallway, and fell to the floor as she began to cry.
Max and Angela then followed Emmy outside and sat down with her, as Angela said, "Emmy, you're going to be fine." Then as Emmy cried, she said, "No, I'm not. I might die, and then Olive will be alone and her dreams and happiness will die. What did I do to deserve this? My life is over, and so will Olive's." Then Max trying to sound optimistic said, "Hey. Emmy... you didn't do anything to make this happen. And like the doctors said, this was discovered early; so lets take some action now rather than later. Okay?" Emmy nodded her head and said, "Okay." Emmy stepped back into the dotor's office with Max and Angela as she said, "Sorry for acting like that Dr. Halmilton. It's just..." Dr. Hamilton smiled as she said, "It's understandable Emmy. But the way you bolted out of here so easily and quickly shows your body is still working just fine, which is good to see. Now lets talk about some treatment options..."
Sophia wook up in her bed, concerned by a faint noise she heard. Putting on a night gown, she headed into the hallway and down the stairs to the living room where she saw Emmy crying on the couch. Sophia looked at Emmy with concern and said, "Emmy?" Emmy immediately sat up, and wiped away her tears as she looked at Sophia nd said, "Oh, hey Sophia. I was, um... uh..." Then Sophia immediately sat on the couch and hugged Emmy as she said, "Come here." Emmy then hugged Sophia as a few more tears came out of her. Then eventually Emmy was a bit more composed as Sophia scooted away from her slightly and said, "Okay Emmy. So... what's going on?" Emmy sighed and said, "Sydney and your mom told you by now I have luekemia, right?" Then Sophia looking slightly uncomfortable said, "They did... but they they also said it was in remission now, and it could be completely gone now." Then Emmy looked up as she said, "Yeah. It could be gone... or it could suddenly come back one day and then I could find myself dying. Sophia... every day I wake up I'm worried I'm going to come close to dying now. I try to ignore it, and many days I can. But every once in awhile... the realization that my life could end... it causes me to just break down."
Then Sophia took a deep breath and said, "Emmy... I can't perfectly relate to what you're going through. But... I understand what it's like to feel as if your life could end at any moment. I'm sure you've heard by now about the... sex video and nude photos of myself that have spread on the internet, right? Along with the multiple incidents where people recognized me from that material?" Emmy nodded her head and said, "Yeah." Sophia tilted her head down slightly as she said, "Well... because of what happened... I'm terrified of my life falling apart from people recognizing me from that video and those photos. I've already been attacked once because of them, and the controversy even kept me from getting into the first college of my choice. Due to that, I keep waiting for things to get even worse. I lay awake at night worried sometimes someone else will recognize me or know of those things I did, and that I'll be hurt again. Or at the very least, I'm worried if more people find out, they'll just look at me as the slut I once was... including my own family. But... when my mom finally found out... it was hard, but... it finally allowed me to finally feel like I wasn't alone anymore." Emmy sighed and said, "I know what you're saying Sophia. But... I don't want Olive to be scared like I am. I don't want her to wake up every now and then with a chill that I might be gone." Then Sophia put a hand on Emmy's shoulder and said, "But maybe if you tell her... then you can both help each other when either of you starts to feel like that." Then tears came out of Emmy's eyes as she hugged Sophia.
*Six Months Ago:
Emmy sat in a hospital examination room looking nervous as Dr. Hamilton stepped in. Emmy took a deep breath and said, "Okay doc. Just give it to me straight." Dr. Hamilton smiled as she said, "All the tests came back negative Emmy. Your luekemia is still in remission, and there are no other problems with your body." Then Emmy looking still nervous said, "But my breathing has felt weird, and my back and neck keeps hurting, and I can't sleep sometimes. What about the other tests?" Then Dr. Hamilton said, "The x-rays and the blood tests all showed you're doing fine Emmy. No issues with your lungs, bones, or blood." Then Emmy looking very frustrated said, "Then why is my body still in pain!? Why am I still hurting all of the time!?" Emmy looked like she was on the verge of tears, as Dr. Hamilton calmly said, "This may be a different type of issue Emmy. You've been very stressed. And when the brain can't handle all that stress, it can result in not just panic attacks, but the built up tension you're experiencing can also cause physical strain on the body."
Emmy looking confused said, "Wait. My brain if it's stressed can make the rest of my body hurt?" Then Dr. Hamilton said, "It's not common, but it can happen. And while medication may help, the best medicine I can reccomend is therapy and talking to as many friends and loved ones about this as you can. Speaking of which... have you talked to your fiance about this yet? You just turned 18, so you can now authorize her now to be your emergency contact and handle medical issues for you if you're not able to..." Emmy interrupted Dr. Hamilton and said, "No. I want Olive to be as happy and care-free as she can be. If the luekemia returns and I... I pass away... I want her to remember our relationship as wonderful, and not one filled with worry." Dr. Hamilton nodded her head and said, "That's your choice Emmy. However I would caution that going through all of this without those closest to you supporting you is going to cause more harm than good."
Emmy and Olive were holding hands as they were walking through the park together. Eventually the two sat down near a lake and silently watched the clouds pass. Then Olive looked at Emmy as she said, "So what do you wanna talk about?" Then Emmy looking a bit nervous said, "What makes you say that?" Then Olive plainly said, "Because you are never this quiet for this long unless you have something serious on your mind." Then Emmy said, "Well... you see Olive... about... about a year ago... I... I..." Olive held Emmy's hand and said, "Emmy, it's okay. Just say it." Emmy closed her eyes for a moment looking very worried. Then Emmy opened her eyes and immediately blurted out, "A year ago I was told I had luekemia, and I got treated and it went into remission, but I've been taking medication and getting tested regularly to make sure it hasn't come back, and I didn't tell you about it because I didn't want you to worry, and I also didn't want you think the only reason I said yes to your marriage proposal was because I didn't think I had much time to live."
Then Emmy caught her breath as she looked at Olive, seeing a confused and painful look in her face. Then Olive took a deep breath and said, "Emmy... I knew... and I didn't tell you I knew because I didn't want you think the only reason I asked you to marry me was because I didn't think you had much time to live." Emmy looked very shocked and confused as she said, "What!? How did you..." Olive looked down slightly as she said, "I didn't know the details at first. But every time you slept over at my house over the last year... you've been tossing and turning in your sleep, and you've been sleep talking a bit too, constantly saying how you don't want to die." Emmy turned her head away from Olive looking more shocked and sad as she covered her mouth with her hands. Then a few tears appeared in Olive's eyes as she said, "Then I saw the multiple envelopes with your name on them at the Reynolds house that I saw were sent from the hospital. The return address had a specific suite number listed, and I saw it was to the part of the hospital that deals with cancer treatment. So... I kinda put it all together myself."
Then Emmy looking confused and concerned, looked at Olive and said, "Why didn't you say anything?" Then Olive said, "I didn't want you to worry about me worrying. Plus, you seemed healthy enough. But I was worried if you knew I had found out... you would think I asked you to marry me out of fear, or for selfish reasons; like... I was anxious to have sex with you before you died." Then Emmy held Olive's hand and said, "Never. I was the one terrified of not giving you the chance to marry me before... it was too late." Then Olive squeezed Emmy's hand and said, "Well... I'm sorry I didn't tell you what I knew." Emmy nodded her head and said, "I'm sorry too. I shoud've never hid anything from you." Then Olive made a little smile and said, "Well... I'm glad we learned this lesson before our wedding day."
Then Emmy looking nervous and confused said, "Wait. Are you sure you still wanna get married now? I mean we both agreed to it while not being completely honest with each other." Then Olive held both of Emmy's hands as she said, "Emmy... you make me a better person. When you're not around, I just see the world in a more analytical way. You make me see the beauty of life, and show me what unconditional love is. I want you in my life for as long as I can. Wether it's for a few more weeks, or many more decades. I'll take whatever life gives me, and if you're still up for it, I still want to be your wife." Then Emmy gently had her forehead touch Olive's as she said, "Olive, you're the only one that sees me exactly the way I am. Your words, your voice, your touch, your presence... they provide me a happiness I thought could never exist. I still fear what is to come in my future, but... whatever that future entails... I want it be as your wife for as long as I can." Then Olive and Emmy kissed one another on the lips, and then held the other in their arms for a very long time.
THE END
