Fatima was being beaten over and over again, as Devin watched helplessly. He let a single tear fall as the man slammed her head into the wall, then started laughing. He tried, he genuinely tried to get to her, but he couldn't.
Devin jumped awake and started crying. He rolled over and gently pulled Fatima closer. He ran his hand through her hair and started braiding a bit of it.
"Baby girl, I love you so, so much, and I'll do absolutely anything to protect you, okay?" he murmured. Fatima rolled over a little and hugged him sleepily.
"What's going on?" she asked softly.
"Nothing, baby. Just loving my girl," he whispered.
"Devin. I'm serious. You're waking up every night and acting like I almost died. What's going on with you?" she asked softly. She propped herself up and snuggled into him.
"Um, it's just that...Well, um, after you told me about what happened in Egypt...I, um, I'm dreaming about it. I keep dreaming that you're hurt and I can't save you and I wake up and all I want to do is hold you," he said, crying a little. Fatima sat up and hugged him a little.
"I'm so sorry you're having those dreams, baby," she whispered. "Hey. I'm okay. You're okay. Nobody's hurt, everyone's safe," she murmured. "Hey. Come here. I love you. Everything is okay now, those guys aren't going to be able to hurt me or anyone else ever again," she whispered, running her hands up and down his back.
"I just got really scared for you," he said, tears running down his cheeks.
"I promise you that nobody is gonna hurt either one of us," she promised.
"I know. I just want to cuddle with my girl," he whispered. Fatima hugged him, then kissed his cheek.
"Hey. Tell you what. Let me go to the bathroom real quick, then we can cuddle. Okay?" she asked gently. Devin nodded a little, then moved so she could get up. Fatima slid out of the bed, then returned a few minutes later. She quickly crawled in, then rested her head on his chest. They fell asleep hugging, as Devin inhaled his girlfriend's comforting scent.
