I rolled out of bed at 10:30 and made a large mug of coffee, I had no idea what to do with my day since Robin and Steve were both working. It was another family dinner night so I would need to be at my uncle's house for 5PM, leaving me with six and a half hours to amuse myself for. Our TV had started working again, after a few more 'tinkers' (kicks) from my mom, so I spent a couple hours watching movies. At 1PM the mailman clattered a bunch of mail through the door; I sifted through the junk, keeping hold of envelopes for my mom that looked important, until I found two crisp white envelopes. One addressed to me, one to Robin. There was only one reason why mail for Robin would come here - college. She hadn't wanted to put her own address down because her parents were super invasive and would've read it or hidden it from her. My hands were shuddering as I made my way to the couch holding my breath. I stared down at them for a while, not wanting to open them and be disappointed. Eventually I pulled myself round and tore my envelope apart. My heart stopped for a second and my insides felt like jelly. I was no longer waitlisted. "We are pleased to confirm that your application has been removed from the waitlist and look forward to welcoming you this fall. Please find attached to this letter a brochure with more information for students from the United States of America." A tear slipped down my cheek and dropped onto the paper. I tilted my head back, not wanting to cry like a baby. Shit - what if Robin's was a bad letter? What if i got in and she didn't? I stared at her envelope for about 5 minutes, trying to decide whether I should open it. I mean...what's mail fraud between two friends, right?
Wasting no time, I shoved on my grey jeans and a Led Zeppelin top, grabbing my skateboard as I ran out of the house with the envelopes in my back pocket. I reached Family Video in record time, feeling like my lungs were about to explode in the parking lot, and collected myself before entering. Steve saw me and laughed, "Just can't stay away from this place can you?" I tried to act cool, "you know me too well Harrington. I actually needed to speak to Robin about something, where is she?" Steve gathered a pile of videos together and said, "She's in the X-rated area, some girl threw up in there." Nice. I scrunched my nose and went to find Robin. She was hunched over in the gorey-horror aisle wearing marigolds and a mask as she mopped. The stench of vomit still hung in the air and I retched. "Read the sign - cleaning in progress. Get outta here. Do NOT vom on this carpet." She commanded with her back to me. "Uh, its me." I said and she whipped around. "Rain, hey, why are you here?" she looked confused. I beckoned her closer with my left hand, right hand touching my back pocket. "I need to talk to you - privately. Like - very privately." I whispered. Robin nodded and we headed out the back of the store, by the trash cans. "These came today." I held out the envelopes. Robin didn't catch on straight away so I continued. "They're from Sheridan." Her face changed instantly, but I couldn't tell if she was scared or excited. "I kinda don't wanna open it" she said. I laughed, "Good thing I already opened both then." Robin stared at my face and grabbed my free hand, "so?" I gave her a toothy grin and whisper-shouted, "We're in. They accepted us, Robin. We're going to Canada." Robin grabbed my shoulders and opened her mouth to silently scream. "No way, oh my god. It's actually happening! oh shit, now we have to tell people." She suddenly stopped looking excited. "We can wait a while." I suggested and we pinky swore to keep it a secret just a little longer. Well, in my head I swore to tell no one but Eddie...
