Lucy was waiting in the car with Margo and Agnes, while Gru was talking to his brother Dru who was standing in the doorframe with Edith beside him.
A loud honking sound from the car made Gru jump, he turned his head and saw Lucy on the passenger side honking the horn. "Hurry up honey! The Princess and the Unicorn Play will be starting in a few minutes and the girls are getting impatient!"
"All right I'll be right there!" Shouted Gru.
As he was writing something on his notepad and Gru continued. "Since we won't be back until five, here's a phone number so you two can order yourselves a pizza." He ripped the piece of paper off and gave it to Dru.
"Also if there is any trouble, do not hesitate to call!" He finally finished with a stern tone to his voice. Dru gave a smile and chuckled at Gru while wrapping his arm around his shoulder. "Oh don't worry brother, you make it sound like I can't handle anything!" Dru took a step back. "Besides, with me around, everything is in good hands!"
Dru smiled and lifted both hands in front of Gru to show him, but Gru only gave him a questionable look. "'In good hands' huh?" He did not try to hide the sarcasm in his voice and with a small scoff, "Yeah right."
Gru knelt down in front of Edith while Dru lowered his arms to his sides, looking at them.
"Edith, are you sure you don't want to come with us?" Edith gave him a shocked look. "What!? No way!" Much like her dad she also didn't hide her tone of voice. "That play looks really boring and I want to spend time with uncle Dru because he's way cooler!"
After hearing that Dru clasped his hands together, placing them on his cheek and cooed. "Awwwwww thanks Edith!"
Gru gave her a smile and placed his hands on her shoulders, "Okay." He said with a soft voice that made Edith smile. He spoke up again but this time it sounded serious.
"Edith I want you to be on your best behavior. Oh! And if you can..." He leaned in close to her ear and whispered, "Make sure Dru doesn't do anything bad." Dru spoke up absentmindedly. "Wait, what?" Edith giggled, "Okay Gru."
Gru stood up looking at both his brother and daughter. "Now this really means no villainy and/or mischief of any kind! The last thing I want is trouble! Understand?"
Dru raised his arm up saluting him in a playful manner. "We understand you! Loud and clear!" Edith mimicking his actions. Gru gave them one last look before saying; "Riiiiight."
As Gru turned around walking towards the car, Dru and Edith lowered their arms, looked at one another and giggling to themselves.
Upon hearing this, Gru immediately twisted his body and pointing his finger at both of them. "Hey!" He shouted. Dru and Edith stopped giggling and looked at him with shocked expressions. Gru spoke again in a firmer tone. "I mean it."
Without saying anything Dru quickly gave him a toothy grin, raising his arm and making an 'okay' gesture with his hand.
Gru turned around again without saying another word and hopped in the driver's seat. Lucy called out to them. "Okay you two have fun!" "We will!" Edith shouted while her and her uncle were waving at them.
Gru started the car and slowly drove out of the driveway, as Lucy took one last look at them and yelled out, "Bye!" "Bye Lucy! Bye Gru!" Edith yelled. Dru also joined in; "Bye Margo! "Bye Agnes! Have fun!" Margo and Agnes were both waving back and saying their goodbyes.
The car finally drove off down the road, with one last look Dru and Edith made their way inside the house. As soon as Dru shut the door, they stared at each other for a few seconds with huge smiles on their faces.
"YES!"
They both shouted, giving each other a high-five and jumping in place while laughing to themselves. "I can't believe we have the whole house to ourselves!" Edith said with excitement in her voice. Dru replied with a squeal, "I know right!?"
After, Dru stopped for a few seconds as he gasped in realization. "Ediiiith..." Dru kneeled down to his niece, placing his hand on the corner of his mouth while nudging her side with his elbow on the other. "...are you thinking what I'm thinking?"
She looked at him with her smile getting wider as if she knew what he meant. "Do I ever!" They both fist bumped and shouting in unison;
"MISCHIEVOUS BEHAVIOR!!!"
Dru was running down the hallway as Edith was chasing after him with both of them carrying an arm full of toilet paper, throwing them at each other like they were snowballs.
Edith threw a roll at him, but instead of hitting him. It knocked over Gru and Lucy's wedding photo off the small table causing the glass to break. They were both too busy playing and laughing to notice the damage they were causing.
Dru burst throught the living room doors and jumped behind the crocodile couch. He could hear the door creaking open, Dru took this as an oppertunity to give her a surprise attack.
With a fresh roll in hand he snickered to himself and jumped out with a loud; "AAA HAAA!" As he was looking around the room and saw that nobody was there. "Uhhh...Edith?" He called out with a confused look.
Without warning he felt the toilet paper hit the side of his head and looked where it was coming from, of course it was Edith who was standing behind the Iron Maiden pointing and laughing at him. "I got you!"
"Oh! Now you're gonna get it!" He said as he threw the toilet paper at her. Seeing it coming, she ducked out of the way and ran out of the living room. Now it was his turn to chase after her.
After their TP war, they were outside in the backyard playing baseball.
She was tapping the bat on the ground and making her stance indicating she was ready to swing, while Dru chucked the ball into his gloved hand, scrunching his face in concentration with his tongue sticking out and narrowing his eyes. Making a windup position and threw the ball in her direction.
Seeing the ball quickly approaching her, she swung her bat as hard as she could. Hitting the ball with a loud 'CLANK' and seeing the ball flying high in the air.
Dru looked up watching the ball take flight while making a suprised smile.
At first they thought the baseball was going to make it over the house, but instead it hit the large attic window shattering the glass.
Dru's smile turned into a frown and letting out a loud gasp. He turned his head to look at Edith who was also in shock, she looked at him with a nervous grin and spoke in a whisper. "Oops."
She was expecting him to get angry at her, but his frown turned into a smile and he started to laugh.
At first she was confused by her uncle's reaction. Normally when she broke something whether it was on purpose or on accident, Gru would get mad and ordered her into her room. Her feeling of nervousness slowly went away and she too began to laugh with him.
In the kitchen Edith was sitting at the table drawing something, while Dru was behind the counter preparing a snack for both of them.
He walked up to the table placing a plate of chocolate chip cookies and two glasses of milk. She finished her drawing before grabbing a cookie and dipping it in her glass of milk. Dru sat next to her and did the same thing. They both let out a loud; "MMMM!" As if it was the best thing they have ever eaten.
Dru looked down at a piece of paper that Edith was drawing on. "What were you drawing kiddo?" After she finished her cookie she picked up her drawing showing it to him. "It's me and you!"
He used his free hand to gently grab the drawing and began to survey it. The picture was the two of them holding hands, with a large red heart and a few small pink hearts behind them.
Edith looked at Dru's face, she noticed his eyes were big and glossy like he was about to cry and his mouth had his usual toothy grin.
Even though she loved her uncle and his exaggerated expressions, but she thought he was overreacting and all that for a drawing? "Awww this is beautiful Edith!" Dru said wiping a tear from his eye. She looked at him with a confident smile. "Thanks...I know it's not perfect, but-"
Before she could finish Dru quickly interrupted her. "Are you kidding!? It's already perfect because you made it!" He gave her a large smile and rubbing her head causing her hat to cover her eyes.
Edith pull up her hat and letting out a shy chuckle with her cheeks turning red.
With a few seconds of silence Dru spoke up, "So...what should we do next?" Placing a small piece of cookie in his mouth. Edith placing her elbows on the table with her hands on her chin and swinging her legs back and forth. "Hmm..." She hummed.
Suddenly her smile grew wide and looked at Dru who was finishing his glass of milk. "Hey uncle Dru?" "Yes Edith?" He wiped the milk and crumbs off his lips with a napkin. She gave him a cocky look. "You know who we haven't talked to in a while?"
Dru was curious by that question but he thought about it for a moment. "Hmm...who haven't we talked to in a while?" Finally, he let out a long; "Ooooohhhhh!" He finally understood who she was talking about.
Meanwhile in Freedonia Dru's butler Fritz was busy in the kitchen washing the dishes, the kitchen phone went off making Fritz spill some water on himself. He dried his hands on his apron and answered the phone. "Hello this is Fritz speaking how may I help you?"
"Yes!" The gruff voice replied. "I was wondering, is your fridge running?" Fritz felt a bit confused with that weird response, but answered in a calm professional manner. "Uh, yes it is...why do you ask?"
Fritz could hear the caller breathing in and out rapidly, like they were out of breath. "Well...you better go catch it!" The caller began to snicker. Fritz heard another voice in the background and they too were snickering. "Mmm, yes... very funny." He said with an impatient voice and hung up the phone.
Dru and Edith were laughing very hard at their immature prank call. Dru was sitting on the floor with one arm around his stomach and his hand on his head. Edith was laying on her back kicking her legs around while holding the wireless phone in her hand.
"I haven't heard that joke in a long time and your voice...made it even funnier!" Dru wheezed. Edith was having a hard time sitting up due to her sides getting sore, but managed to get up in succession. "Okay uncle Dru, it's your turn!" She leaned up giving the phone to Dru who was still shaking with laughter.
After Fritz was done with the dishes he grabbed a wet table cloth and wiped the kitchen counters. The phone rings again. Fritz hesitates for a few seconds thinking it's the same prank caller, but he let out a small sigh and answered the phone with the same greeting.
"Hello!" The caller responded, but this time their voice was nasally and a bit shaky. "Do you know of updog?" Fritz had no idea what they were talking about, but he asked anyway. "Uh, I beg your pardon?" "Do you know of updog?" The voice repeated. "I'm sorry, but what is updog?" Fritz questioned.
The two voices were trying hard to hold back their laughter and the nasally voice answered. "Nothing what's up with you?!" Fritz wanted to hang up immediately, but he began to notice the familiarity of their voice. "Wait a minute...Dru is that you?" Both Dru and Edith bursted out in loud laughter through the phone receiver causing Fritz to move the phone away from his ear.
Fritz hung up the phone, placing a hand on his forehead and letting out a long sigh. "I'm getting too old for this."
In the living room Edith was wearing her ninja outfit practicing her ninja skills with three of the minions Stuart, Dave and Kevin. She ordered Dave to hold a wooden board in front of him while she was getting her katana ready.
Dave was trying to steady himself, but his nervous shaking was making it difficult. Kevin was covering his eyes in fear and Stuart was watching with excitement. Edith positioned herself, took a deep breath and without warning-
'SHING'
Stuart gasp in shock causing Kevin to uncover his eyes. Dave had his eyes closed the whole time, so he couldn't see what was happening. He opened one eye and notice that the board was successfully cut in half. Dave opened both of his eyes looking down at himself, giggling in relief that he was unharmed and shortly after, he fainted.
Stuart and Kevin were cheering for Edith who place the katana over her shoulder and standing proudly. Dru walks in wondering what the commotion is about. "What's going on in here?" He asked.
Edith looked at her uncle with a proud smile and pointed at the wooden boards in Dave's hands. "I was just practicing my awesome ninja skills!"
As if on cue, Dave woke up looking at the pieces of wood, placing them together and staring in awe on how symmetrical the cut is. He gave the wooden pieces to Dru to let him see for himself.
Similar to Dave, Dru place the pieces together examining Edith's work. His face turned from a look of concentration into a large proud smile. "This...is...awesome!"
Edith used her free hand to rub the back of her head in a shy manner. "Oh that's nothing, I still need to do some more training." Dru gives her a warm smile at her modest response, then a thought pops into his head. "Well...how about I help you train?" He asks with a playful grin. Edith looks at him with large wide eyes and a smile to match.
Down in the lab Dru was putting on his white villan suit, while Edith spun her nunchucks around getting ready for her training. Some of the minions were watching in anticipation and the others were busy doing their own things. After Dru got dressed both him and Edith bowed to one another indicating that they're about to start.
Dru cleared his throat. "Now then young grasshopper." His tone was a mixture of his normal voice and with a hint of professionalism that was almost matched Gru's speaking voice.
"You may have been trained in the art of kombat, weapons, speed and agility and so on...but!" That last word made both Edith and the minions flinch. "You also need to train..." Dru knelt down to Edith wrapping his arm around her and waved his other arm in the air and whispered; "...your mind." Her and the minions ooed at his last words.
He placed two hands on her shoulders making eye contact with her. "Are you ready?" She gave him a smile before pulling her face mask up. "As I'll ever be." Her voice sounding confident. Dru smile back, "Alright!" He stood up putting his arms behind his back and continued. "Now close your eyes and clear your mind of any distractions." She did just that.
Dru slowly backed up giving her space. "That's it, now I want you to focus on your surroundings and let your instincts do the rest." He turned around setting his suit on camouflage mode and slowly walked away.
Edith kept her eyes closed and trying to drown out the noise of the minions working in the background, while the others stood around in silence waiting for something to happen.
From out of nowhere a tennis ball was heading in her direction, Edith began spinning her nunchucks as if she knew it was coming. "Hiiiiiya!" With one good swing she manage to hit the tennis ball sending it flying across the lab.
One of the minions was working on a grappling hook that's used to help Dru for his villan heists. The ball hit his head causing him to accidentally shoot the grappling hook towards two minions who were painting Gru's old airship all in white and another holding the ladder in place.
The hook grabbed the ladder yanking it away, causing a minion to fall off with the paint bucket landing on his head. The minion that was holding the ladder only laughed at his predicament. The flying tennis ball smacked his head making him fall over, so the painted minion got the last laugh.
The ball hit Dr. Nefario's working desk, shattering a lot of empty vials and beakers. If he saw the lab and his work desk in a messy state, he would absolutely lose his mind. So with him still being stuck in carbonite, might be a blessing in disguise.
Even with the commotion in the background Edith can hear foot steps approaching behind her. With her eyes now open and a sly smile she placed her nunchucks on the ground, spun herself around and pounced at the invisible figure. The sudden force caused Dru to fall backwards, luckily a few minions caught them before they got hurt.
Dru turned off his camouflage mode while still holding her in his arms. Edith lowered her face mask to get a clear look around her. All of the minions were looking in their direction which was making the situation very awkward. Dru and Edith broke the silence with their fits of laughter and all the minions began to laugh along with them.
After they stopped laughing all the minions went back to work. As Dru and Edith stood themselves up from the metal floor, Edith looked at her uncle with both question and concern. "So...how did I do?" Dru gave her a small smirk. "Well...I think the student has become the master!" Her eyes widened by his response. "Wow! Really?!" "Yup!" Came his short reply. Edith calmed her voice and bowed at Dru. "Thank you, sensei." Dru bowed back at her.
A low rumbling sound can be heard from Edith's direction causing Dru to look at her. "What was that?" Edith placed her hands on her stomach answering Dru's question. "Sorry, that was my stomach." The same low rumbling sound was now coming from Dru. He put his hands on his stomach and let out a small chuckle. "I guess our training made us work up an appetite." Edith laughed, "Yeah!"
Dru continued. "Tell you what. How about we go upstairs, get changed and I'll order us a pizza?!" Edith let out a loud gasp. "Yes please!" Dru laughed motioning his head to the elevator. "Okay let's go!"
As soon as Dru and Edith finished changing in to their regular clothes, they both ran into the living room and threw themselves on the crocodile couch. With one hand Dru grabbed the piece of paper with a phone number for a pizza place that Gru gave him and held his cell phone with the other.
He dialed the number with both speed and eagerness.
On the other end of the phone, a voice of an unenthusiastic teen greeted Dru with a monotone voice. "Hello, you have reached Pizza Party Pizza where we serve the best pizzas in the county. How may I help you?"
Oblivious to the teen's attitude, Dru responded with his cheery voice. "Hello! I would like to order one of your best large pepperoni pizzas please! Oh! Can you make it a stuffed crust!?" He gave his niece a playful wink and Edith looked at her uncle with a huge smile on her face.
While Dru was talking on the phone, Edith was flipping through the tv channels looking for something they could watch, until she saw something on the movie channel that caught her eye: Aliens vs Robots! The Movie.
A movie based on one of Edith's favorite tv shows made her heart skip a beat, but quickly felt disappointed that it won't come on in '15 minutes'.
Dru hung up his cell phone turning to Edith. "Find anything you wanna watch?" "Yeah! There's this movie called Aliens vs Robots! that's based off my favorite tv show!" Edith looked away from Dru with her arms crossed and frowned angrily. "But it won't come on in 15 minutes".
He gave her a little pat on her back while speaking in his soft voice. "Don't worry Edith, 15 minutes isn't too long. In fact, they told me that the pizza won't be here in 15 minutes. We could do something to pass the time."
Edith only huffed at his response. "Okay so what can we do? We've done everything and there's nothing else to do." Dru placed his hand on his chin trying to find a solution. Suddenly both his eyes and smile grew big at his brilliant idea. "Everything...but one."
He grabbed the tv remote that was beside Edith and went through a lot of channels until he came across a music station where the song Groove is in the Heart by Deee-Lite began to play.
Dru stood up from the couch dancing in place, while Edith only lowered her arms and stared at Dru in confusion. "Uncle Dru...what are you...?" He looks at Edith with a smile on his face. "Well, you know what they say. Time flies fast when you're having fun!"
Before Edith could say anything, Dru swooped her off the couch at lightning fast speed. After spinning in place for a little while, Dru placed Edith back on the ground giving her some space.
Edith still felt confused about what's happening. She turned to Dru who was still dancing along to the music. Without saying anything he gave her a reassuring smile to let her know that everythings fine. Edith returned the smile and danced beside him.
Dru moved out of the way to let Edith show off her dance moves. She swayed her arms from side to side while her legs hopped along to the beat. She finishes by showing off her ninja moves and bowing at the end.
Now it was Dru's turn to show off his moves.
Edith couldn't help to admire her uncle's dance moves. It's not to say that she doesn't like Gru's dancing, but if Gru and Dru were to have a dance competition, Dru would definitely take first prize.
His energy was also something she can't ignore either. She too was a ball of energy that couldn't be contained, but he manage to keep playing with her all day without breaking a sweat and even her dad has a hard time keeping up.
"I bet me and uncle Dru could power an entire city with our energy!" She jokingly thought to herself.
Dru stops dancing to look at Edith who was now concerned. He lowered himself down, while extending his arms in front of him and gesturing Edith to come to him. She began to smile. She backed up a few steps and ran towards Dru at a fast speed.
With his fast reflex he grabbed his niece and tossed her high up in the air. Edith looked down at Dru hoping he would catch her. Dru kept his reassuring smile.
He catches her in succession and holding her close thinking that might have scared her. Instead Edith began to laugh hard into Dru's shoulder. He sighed in relief.
"That was awesome! Do it again!" She threw another laughing fit. Dru's face turned from concern to playful in a matter of seconds. "Again? Okay!" He tosses her in the air causing Edith to laugh even harder and Dru began to laugh along with her.
On the third toss Dru was laughing so hard that he lost his balance and fell on the floor. Luckily, he caught her before she got hurt. "Uh...I think that's it for now." He said matter-of-factly. They burst into laughter and hugging each other from cheek to cheek.
After calming down for a bit they could hear the doorbell ringing. Dru and Edith ran to the door to see who it was. As they opened the door a young unamused teenager with a blank stare was holding the pizza box in front of them and spoke in a monotoned voice. "Here you go one large stuffed crust pepperoni pizza." Dru and Edith looked at each other with both excitement and hunger.
They sat on the couch watching their aforementioned movie while eating their pizza between them and earning themselves a relaxing movie time together.
Edith finished her first slice of pizza and before she can grab another slice, she looked at Dru who was enjoying the movie and the pizza. She cleared her throat and began to speak.
"Hey uncle Dru?" He looked back at his niece and swallowing the remaining bits of pizza. "Yes Edith?" "I just wanna tell you that I had a lot of fun today." She smiles. Dru returns the smile. "I'm glad. I had a lot of fun too." Edith looks down at her twiddling thumbs. "I just wish we could do this everyday."
Dru felt a little stunned by that statement and quickly reassured her. "Aww Edith! Of course we could do this everyday..." He looks around the living room and seeing lines of toilet paper, toys and knocked over furniture from their previous games. "...Well maybe not like 'this' but that doesn't mean we can't do it everyday!" Edith looks back at Dru with a faint smile. "Really?" "Really." He finished.
They both went back to watching the movie and eating their pizza. Dru remembered something that Gru told them before they left, but his distracted mind can't remember the little details. So he asked his niece.
"Hey Edith? What time did Gru say when they were coming home?" Edith spoke with her mouth full. "I don't know...five I think." "Five huh?" Dru took a bite out of his pizza and looked up at the clock on the wall and went back to the tv.
Dru immediately spits out the pizza saving himself from choking and looks at Edith with a shocked and fearful expression. "FIVE?!" The both looked at the clock simultaneously and the clock reads: 4:45pm. They looked back at each other in shock and fear.
Dru kicks open the living room door and runs down the hallway with an armful of toys, clothes, toilet paper etc. "Hurry Edith they'll be home at any minute!" Edith was in the kitchen washing dishes along with a few minions helping her out. "I'm trying!"
"Oh...my brother is going to kill me!" Dru's voice was becoming more frantic by the minute. He ran pass three minions who were fixing Gru and Lucy's wedding photo. One of them was sweeping up the glass, the other ran off to find a replacement frame and the other was standing still protecting the picture.
Dru's arms were getting tired from the heavy load, so he needed to think of a place where he could put it down. His eyes darted all over the place, until he saw a closet door a few feet in front of him and with a beaming smile he shuffled his way to the closet.
He was trying his best to balance both himself and the clutter of stuff in his arms. With a few tries he finally manage to open the door and quickly threw it all in. Dru ran off to find more things to clean up.
Four minions who were also carrying an armful of stuff. They were walking pass Dru wondering how he got rid of the mess so quickly. One of them looked at the closet door and gesturing the others to look too. They all babbled in both joy and agreement of their new boss's brilliant idea.
Up in the attic the minions were cleaning up the shattered glass and carefully replacing the broken window from Dru and Edith's baseball game. Down in the lab the rest of the minions cleaned up the spilled paint and thrown out the broken beakers and vials and other things that needed to be cleaned up.
Dru and Edith both walked slowly to the crocodile couch feeling tired and exhausted. The moment they sat down, they let out a loud sigh in relief and wiping the sweat from their foreheads.
"Now we have enough energy to power a lightbulb!" Edith joked to herself.
The both looked at the clock that now reads: 5:00pm. "Wow! I can't believe we got it done in 15 minutes! Exclaimed Dru. Mel walked in the living room saluting at Dru and speaking in Minionese that all the chores were done. Dru saluted back. "Great! Thank you Mel and tell the others I said "Thank You!" "Okay!" Smiled Mel as he made his way to the lab.
Dru smiles at his niece. "See? Didn't I tell you that time flies fast when you're having fun?" "Yeah...but too bad it was chores." Smiled Edith crossing her arms in a playful manner. Dru couldn't help but giggle.
Before they can get back to their movie, they could hear the front door open. Gru, Lucy, Margo and Agnes, all made their way to the living room to check if Dru and Edith were okay and upon seeing them they were right.
"Uncle Dru!" Shouted Agnes who was running towards him. Margo did the same. "Agnes! Margo!" Dru wrapped his arms around his other nieces hugging them tightly. "How was the play?" Agnes just bounced in place unable to contain her excitement. "It was the bestest play ever!"
Margo replied to her uncle. "It was okay. What about you two?" Edith jumped up getting in between her sisters and uncle. "Oh nothing much we just had the most fun and awesome day EVER!" She hopped on the couch to sit beside Dru. He wrapped his arm around Edith while holding his smile. "We sure did!"
Lucy awed at the cute sight "Aww I'm happy to hear that." Gru walks up to Dru and Edith while Margo and Agnes were watching the movie.
"Well...I see that the house didn't turn upside down." Gru said in a joking manner. "Seriously, I hope you two didn't cause any trouble while we were gone." His voice quickly shifted to a serious tone.
"Oh brother you worry too much!" Dru shifted the serious conversation into something lighthearted. "It's just like I said...'Everything is in good hands!'" Just like before Dru lifted his hands in front of Gru to show him. Instead of a questionable look Gru gives his brother a smile. "In good hands indeed." Dru let out a huge smile at his response.
Gru shifted his gaze at Edith and leaned down close to her with a smile not leaving his face. "You were right about the play...it is really boring." He whispered his last words in fear of offending Agnes. Edith giggled quietly. "I told ya."
Gru stood back up and saw Lucy walk up to the couch to watch the movie with them. Gru began to walk out of the living room when Lucy called out.
"You're not watching the movie with us HoneyBear!?" Gru called back. "I will I'm just gonna put my coat away and save me a slice of pizza!" "We will!" Dru and Edith spoke in unison which made them giggle.
Gru walked towards the closet door removing both his coat and scarf. As he opened the door a large pile of toys, clothes, toilet paper and other stuff poured out causing Gru to jump back. With his face turning red, he shouts at the top of his lungs. "EDIIIIITH!!!" "DRUUUUUUU!!!"
Dru and Edith looked at each other with nervous laughter.
