Misty Rematch and Watching TV
On the bus ride back to Fushsia City Ash and Misty plotted Misty rematch. Misty currently had Totodile, Vaporeon, Krabby, Buizel, Dewgong, and Lotad on her. The match was a three on three match with no substitution. Last time Misty had used Vaporeon, Psyduck, and Starmie.
"Are you going to take back Starmie and Psyduck for the battle?" Ash asked.
"I don't want to rely on type advantage. We know that's not going to get me the win. I gave Buizel the ice beam TM, he's really strong and wants to fight," Misty said.
"What is his move set besides Ice Beam?" Ash asked.
"Tackle, growl, tail whip, quick attack, and water gun," Misty said. "And Vaporeon really wants in on this fight again."
"That leaves you one more," Ash said.
"I'm between using Krabby and getting Psyduck back. I know type advantage won't win me it but having Psyduck could be good and Krabby only has a couple of fights behind him with other trainers. One with one of Sabrina gym trainers," Misty said. "I'll trade Dewgong for Psyduck. I think Dewgong deserves a rest anyway."
"Sounds like a plan," Ash said. "We'll get to Fushsia a little late but we can do some training tonight before you challenge tomorrow."
"Yeah, Ash I do have to say I think the Ice Beam TM is going to start breaking down. Even reusable TMs don't last forever," Misty said. "Some of our more used ones might need to be replaced and we don't have the money for it right now."
"We'll figure it out," Ash said putting an arm around Pikachu who was on his lap and went to look out the window.
Misty knew not to mention it again so instead started planning strategies in her head for her battle. They arrived into Fushsia city as the sun was starting to set and went right to the Pokémon Center. Nurse Joy had a room for them. "I'm going to call Oak and get Psyduck back," Misty said.
"I'm going to use the other phone and call my mom," Ash said going to the phone and dialing home. Delia answered the phone not long after it started ringing.
"Ash, sweetie," Delia said. "Where are you?"
"Back in Fushsia for Misty rematch," Ash said. "Is that a Marrowak in the background?" Ash looked at the screen and saw a Marrowak in the house. "Where did you get it?"
"Marrowak a boy and Lita caught him and gave him to me," Delia said. "He was too injured and can never battle again. He's been great around the house and with the young Pokémon." Ash gave a frown not sure why he was upset Lita gave his mom a Pokémon. "Oh, you know the Eevee Brother Tournament is tomorrow."
"It is?" Ash asked. "I lost track of time. I've never missed watching it."
"Well don't miss it this year. Lita in it," Delia said and Ash mouth fell open. "She's the youngest brothers sponsored champion."
"How did she pull that off?" Ash asked knowing that meant she was heading to the top 16 right away.
"Not sure," Delia said.
"Pika," Pikachu said jumping up on Ash's head.
"Hi Pikachu, your looking strong," Delia said and Pikachu made a happy sound at that. "Tell Misty I said good luck. I'm so proud of all of you. And remember to change your…."
"Yeah mom," Ash said knowing what his mom was going to say and saying goodbye.
"Psyduck has been training with other Pokémon at the lab. Learned both fury swipes and water pulse," Misty said unaware of what Ash had just learned. "I want to test out all three Pokémon tonight before we head to bed. First thing in the morning I want to go to the gym and request the rematch."
"Um… yeah sure," Ash said getting up and heading for the training grounds. Letting Pikachu, Charmelon, and Butterfree help Misty train.
After a while of Ash just staring Misty moved towards. "Okay, what's wrong?" Misty asked and Ash shrugged. "Pikachu, what happened when Ash called his mother?" Pikachu came running over and made gestures and noises that Misty knew Pikachu associated with one person. "Something about Lita?" Pikachu gave a nod. "Ash, some English please."
"Lita is in the Eevee Brother Tournament tomorrow. Sponsored by one of the Eevee brothers," Ash said.
"Wow that's great for her and your jealous," Misty said realizing why Ash was acting like a brat as she was talking.
"She should be here with us and I mean she only has five badges. I have five badges. How is she getting this sponsor?" Ash asked.
"Ash, she should be exactly where she is. With May and Max traveling away from us. As for how she got into the tournament that way I don't know, but it's great for her. You should be happy for your cousin and rival. Cause Lita is your rival. It might be a friendly rivalry but it is," Misty said.
"Okay,' Ash said but Misty could tell he was still a bit upset. "Let's train."
"Actually, I think we're done. I don't want to get them too tired," Misty said. "Let's head to bed."
….
The next morning Misty woke up to find Ash gone and found him already eating breakfast with Pikachu and staring at a TV. "Well, all four Eevee brothers sponsor trainers have been chosen and the tournament is about to start. We have Eric, our Pokémon trainer specialist here to give opinions on the four," a woman was saying. "Eric. What do you think of the four trainers?"
"Well, Pyro, Rainer, and Sparky sponsors are no surprise. They have been around the block a few times, even competed in this tournament before," Eric said. "But this is the first time Mikey, the youngest Eevee brother has got to sponsor anyone and he got a name. Lita Ketchum."
"For people who don't know can you explain who Lita Ketchum is exactly?" The woman asked.
"She is dragon master Drakken daughter. Drakken being former leader of the elite four and a hero of the war. She is also former champion Red niece and current champion Lance's niece," Eric said. "She has big shoes to fill obviously and is definitely a wild card of this competition. I will say from a quick search on her name in trainer websites shows she has been a trainer for a few months and has six badges registered to her."
"Six," Ash mumbled.
"That's pretty good for a new trainer," the woman said.
"Yes, I will be doing a deep dive into all information available about her," Eric said. "Although it might be worth noting she is the photographer behind the recent release of a picture of Ho-Oh."
"So is she a trainer or photographer," The woman asked.
"Both maybe," Eric said. "Tonight, after the tournament is over I will have more answers on her and all the trainers in the tournament." The two went off to talk about the other trainers.
"She has six badges now," Ash mumbled. "Um… I guess we should…."
"Go challenge Janine and get back here before the finale 16," Misty said. "So, we can cheer on our friend."
Ash gave a nod and let Misty eat her breakfast before the two went out and took the familiar path to the gym. Misty and Ash entering. "I want a rematch with Janine," Misty called out.
"I was expecting you here a while ago," it was Janine coming out from the back.
"I have four badges now," Misty said to Janine.
"Ah, went somewhere else and came back. This should be interesting. My referee has the day off though," Janine said.
"I'll do it," another voice said and another woman around Janine age came from the back. "I grew up around this gym just the same as you Janie."
"True, yes take the referee spot," Janine said and gave Misty a nod as Ash took Pikachu to the area he could watch from.
"It's a three on three battle. No substitutions on either side," Janine friend said and Janine let out a Vileplume. Ash decided to release Oddish.
"Watch, your finale evolved form," Ash said as Oddish snuggled on his lap with Pikachu.
Misty took out a pokeball and release Vaporeon. She knew this would be a hard battle. Vileplume was a grass and poison type. Misty knew this is why Janine choose Vileplume. Knowing she was specializing in water. Janine started off with petal blizzard.
"Make a shield using water gun," Misty said. "In a circle going around." Vaporeon circling around as she sued water gun to create a shield against the petals. Some got through and hurt Vaporeon but it did well in reducing the effect.
"Interesting, use toxic," Janine said and the toxic attack hit right into Vaporeon.
"Shadow ball and quick attack combined," Misty said and Vaporeon started running quickly and using shadow ball. The balls hitting Vileplume at speed and causing harm. Misty knew the toxic had poisoned Vaporeon. Meaning she didn't have much time left, but Vileplume was hurt and almost done too. She could finish this. "Use rock smash."
Vaporeon used rock smash which Vileplume which hit Vileplume directly. Vileplume used a bullet seed while Vaporeon was closed. After both attacks Vileplume and Vaporeon looked at each other before Vileplume fainted. Vaproeon let out a cheer having survived a battle in a gym without fainting and the shocked in pain. Toxic was still in effect.
"You're out Vaporeon," Misty said returning Vaporeon. She didn't want her Pokémon too injured trying to hurt the next Pokémon. Wasn't worth it when she had two Pokémon left.
Misty released Buizel while Janine next Pokémon was a Nidorino. Misty glad she didn't use another poison/grass type. Nidorino used focus energy while Buizel released a water gun. The water gun was a direct hit but Nidorino powered through and responded with a peck that sent Buizel back.
Nidorino then used poison sting. Misty knew she couldn't lose Buizel and she decided to get an advantage with a favorite tactic of hers. "Use ice beam on the floor," Misty called out and Buizel used ice beam freezing the entire floor turning the battle field into an ice field. Nidorino clearly had trouble with the floor but Buizel wasn't the best either on the ice. "Slide on your stomach. Use water gun to direct."
Buizel followed Misty advice sliding on her stomach and using water gun to direct himself. Nidorino still having trouble as he sent out poison sting but his aim was off due to his balance on the ice. Buizel got hit a bit but managed to dodge. Buizel went to use quick attack getting a direct hit. "Ice beam close up," Misty called out and a direct hit on Nidorino with the ice beam.
"Toxic spike," Janine said and Nidorino let out toxic spikes. Knew this attack was to harm Misty next Pokémon not Buizel. Janine knew Nidorino was almost gone. Buizel going in for a quick attack as Nidorino hit back with a horn attack. The two attacks hit and Nidorino fainted.
"Nidorino is unable to battle. Gym leader choose your next Pokémon," Janine friend said as Janine returned Nidorino. Janine tossing out her next Pokémon which was Arbok. And unfortunately, Arbok slide across the ice easier than Buizel. Buizel trying to use water gun on Arbok but the snake like Pokémon dodged and got in close. Buizel used a tackle as Arbok used thunder fang. Buizel was done.
"Thank you," Misty said to the pokeball as she returned Buizel and took out her last Pokémon. "Psyduck, it's your turn."
"Psy," Psyduck said and yelled out as he hit into the spike. Misty knowing the toxic spike Nidorino used had hurt him.
"Psyduck calm mind," Misty said. "And then use water pulse." The water type move went across the field and did hit into Arbok but Misty could see she still had a problem. Psyduck wasn't as steady on the ice as some of her other Pokémon and Arbok was still sliding across it with no problem. Psyduck unable to dodge a thunder fang but able to responded with a direct fury swipe.
"Psyduck use confusion on the ice," Misty said. She had to destroy the ice field and Psyduck eyes lit up and then the ice light up. The ice field breaking apart and the ice going and hitting into Arbok.
"Use poison sting," Janine said and the attack hit Psyduck. "Now deliver another thunder fang." Arbok got close lightning in his teeth.
"Confusion on Arbok this time," Misty said and Psyduck used the confusion on Arbok tossing him into the air. "Water gun now." Psyduck let out the water gun and it hit the Arbok who was still in the air. When Arbok landed he fainted.
"Arbok is unable to battle. Gym leader is out of useable Pokémon. Challenger wins," Janine friend announced and Misty went to give Psyduck a hug as Janine returned her Pokémon.
"A lot of trainer come in here relying on type advantage. You didn't this time. You're a brilliant at strategy, which will do you well in the Indigo League and when you become a gym leader," Janine said handing Misty her badge and going to sign off on Misty paper she only used water Pokémon.
"Nice job Misty," Ash said having watched silently with his two Pokémon. Pikachu was on his shoulder now and Oddish in his arms. "And Oddish got to see what she will eventually be."
"Odd, oddish," Oddish said shaking her head.
"What?" Ash asked.
"I don't think your Oddish likes Vileplume," Janine said. "You know Gloom can go two ways. Maybe Oddish will like Bellossom better." Ash frowned but gave a nod. It was something to look into.
"But we have to get your Pokémon to the Pokémon Center and get a spot to watch the tournament at the center. It will be crowded," Ash said.
"Ah yes Lita is in it," Janine said.
"Why don't you join us," Janine friend said. "We're having a small get together in the back. Some old friends. We can send your Pokémon to the center by phone and we have plenty of food."
"It would be nice for you to join us," Janine said with a nod. "Cindy why don't you show Misty where she can send her Pokémon to Nurse Joy."
Cindy nodded and Misty followed her. "So how do you know Janine?" Misty asked once she was done sending her Pokémon to Nurse Joy.
"Childhood friends. Back when we were ten, before the age requirement to be a trainer was raised, we went on a journey together. Collected badges, caught Pokémon, entered tournaments. A little over a year in Janine came back here to train under her father. I continued for a bit but realized I wasn't going to go anywhere and decided to go to school to become a Pokémon doctor. I just graduated."
"Congrats," Misty said as they headed to a back room that had a TV. Ash was sitting on the couch with Pikachu in her arms. He must have returned Oddish. Misty sat next to him and Janine told them they could help themselves to food and drinks.
They still had a bit before the finale 16 so they chatted with Janine, Cindy, and a few other friends they had there. When the finale 16 came up though Ash was all focused on the screen. Since four battle were taking place at once the screen was split to show all four but Ash kept his eyes on Lita once her battle was on. Ash didn't know Rockruff or Meowth well. Lita had left them not long after getting them but Ash admitted they did well. Ash was shocked when the next Pokémon Lita used was Nova.
"Can't she not battle right now?" Ash asked.
"Looks like Lita found an Ever Stone," Misty said seeing the collar.
Ash had to smirk as Lita defeated her opponent Pikachu. Ash wasn't nearly as interested in any of the other battles in the finale 16 but did find it interesting when two of the Eevee brothers sponsors trainer lost. "That's good for Lita," Ash mumbled. Despite being jealous originally, he was now rooting for his cousin.
Lita next battle Ash paid even closer attention to. He didn't know Scyther and Dratini well but he really wanted a Scyther and he had a Dratini. Seeing how his cousins were doing with them was something he was interested in. Ash frowned when Primeape was released. For some reason Ash didn't like Primeape and found him to be a goof but had to admit he impressed Ash in this battle.
"She's up against Carrie in the finale 4," Misty mumbled as the tournament took a break. "That's not good."
"She'll use her first six. She has a chance," Ash said as he took a bite of a sandwich he grabbed.
Now with a finale 4 battle the battles were one at a time so Lita and Carrie were the entire screen. Ash was shocked though when Lita used Torchic. "Isn't that May's Pokémon?" Ash asked. "Why would she use that?"
"Because she has realized she can't win this battle. She's saving Pokémon for the final 3 fight," Misty said.
"I agree. I think she was smart," Janine said as they watched the battle. Lita using her newer Pokémon she caught and two of May's. Ash frowning as Lita lost. "She took out four Pokémon more powerful. She did well."
"Finale three match," Misty said and Misty wasn't surprise to see Lita used her first six Pokémon.
"Wow," Ash said seeing Lita's first six Pokémon in action. Ash was surprised to see Pidgeot instead of a Pigeotto and stunned when Bagon evolved. They were very powerful Pokémon and Ash did have to smile when Lita won third. The finale battle between Carrie and a random trainer wasn't nearly as exciting.
Afterward the finale fight it went back to the Pokémon trainer specialist Eric and a news host. "So, what do you think of our top three?" The woman asked Eric.
"Well Carrie was a no brainer. Even if she hadn't been an Eevee Brother sponsor she would have been a favorite to win. 2nd place, he's been around a few years. Always middle of the road. He's an average trainer who got lucky," Eric said.
"And Lita Ketchum?" The question was asked.
"She impressed me. She's good at studying her opponent and knowing what to do. Her first opponent is an electric specialist who I have said for years gets frustrated easily. Lita took advantage of that. Her Pokémon are well trained. She clearly takes after her dad and uncle knowing how to use dragons but I think her Vulpix is the one to watch. She'll definitely be in the Indigo League," Eric said and started talking more but Ash had enough.
"Thank you for letting us watch with you," Ash said getting up and leaving the room.
"Like Ash said," Misty said with a nod and followed Ash out catching him before he exited the gym. "Ash, what's wrong?"
"Lita first six are really powerful," Ash said. "What do you think of them compared to my first six?"
"Depends, who were your first six again?" Misty asked and Ash sighed. "You have so many. I know Espeon and Pikachu…."
"Butterfree, Beedrill, Nidorino, Nidorina," Ash said.
"Beedrill," Misty said.
"Oddish was next but Riolu took Beedrill place so count one of them instead of that Beedrill," Ash said knowing what Misty meant there.
"I'll count Riolu, because counting her makes it all your six have a counterpart in Lita six," Misty said and Ash waited. "Obviously Espeon and Nova are easy comparisons. Both your starters, same Pokémon. Your is evolved, Lita is not but only reason why not is because she wants to be a Glaceon. I'm going to say the two are even match. Pikachu is an easy comparison to Hestia. Both a solo type. Pikachu electric while Hestia is fire. Both evolve by use of an evolution stone. Both pretty even at the moment. That's where the even ends and Lita first six outclass your first six. Before today I would have said Primeape and Riolu might be even but Primeape is in his evolved form. Riolu is not and I don't remember the last time I saw your fighting type." Ash gave a nod there. "Butterfree is best compared to Pidgeot and while both are in their finale evolved form Pidgeot has done a lot more battling than Butterfree. Nidorino and Nidorina can sort of be compared to Poliwhirl and Ba… sorry Shelgon, but the two have more training and battles. And I know you put both Nidorino and Nidorina at the lab to keep them together but it does mean they are not training as much with you."
"So, Lita is the better trainer your saying," Ash said.
"No, not what I am saying. You asked me to compare her first six to your first six," Misty pointed out. "What I have been trying to get through your head is you and Lita are different trainers with different styles. You have a large collection of Pokémon which I know you will continue to grow. That gives you flexibility and the ability to call on what you need when you need it. It also means they will get more powerful slower as you can't give as much individual attention to them. Lita kept her team small for a long time. Her first six got a lot of individual attention from her which made them stronger faster. But she also showed the limitation of her style right here today. You realize why she used May Pokémon?"
"No," Ash said shaking her head.
"Because she didn't have enough Pokémon to do two six on six battles back to back," Misty said and Ash eyes widen as that made sense. "And while Scyther, Rockruff, Meowth, and Dratini did well their power is nowhere near her first six yet. Your both good trainers. Your just different and neither way is wrong Ash. The only thing wrong is maybe you can do a bit of a better job at transferring Pokémon in and out of the lab."
Ash gave a nod thinking about what Misty said as they walked back to the Pokémon Center.
….
The next morning Ash was up early and woke up Misty. "I can't stop thinking of Lita's battle. Wish I could congratulate her," Ash said.
"She's probably still at the Eevee Brothers house. Call on over," Misty said rolling over.
"Good idea," Ash said jumping up almost knocking Pikachu off the bed.
"Wait… we're calling Lita," Misty said jumping up herself and Pikachu jumped up as well both following Ash out and to the phones.
It wasn't hard to get the Eevee Brothers phone number and call on over. "Hi, is Lita still there?" Ash asked when the youngest Eevee brother Mikey answered the phone.
"I think her, May, and Max just left. I can probably catch them," Mikey said.
"Can you please?" Ash asked and Mikey ran from the phone only leaving his Eevee on the video.
It wasn't long later before Lita appeared on the video. She seemed confused at first but then smiled when she saw Ash and Misty. "Ash, Misty," Lita said taking a seat in front of the video phone. Hestia had jumped onto her lap along with Nova the two saying something and Pikachu responding to them.
"Hi," it was May coming up behind Lita.
"Ash, hello," Max said. "Did you see Lita's battle? It was awesome." Max had gotten in front of Lita and Lita had to push him back making Ash and Misty laugh.
"Reason why I called. I wanted to say congratulations," Ash said. "You did really well."
"Thanks Ash," Lita said giving her cousin a smile. "So, where are you two?"
"Fushsia," Misty said back.
"What? It's been over two weeks. How are you still there?" Lita asked.
"Well Ash heard Sabrina was back in her gym so we took the bus down to battle her," Misty explained. "I won and he lost, so we had to go to Lavender Town and he caught two ghost Pokémon." Lita shook her head and laughed. "And then he won so we came back here and I got my badge yesterday. What have you three been up to besides competing in the Eevee Brother Tournament and seeing Ho-Oh. Nice necklace by the way."
Misty had seen the feather on Lita's necklace and Lita put a hand on it. Before either Lita or May could answer Max jumped up. "Well former champion Blue showed up and wanted to help Lita's Pidgeotto take on Griffin who was landing nearby soon. May entered a contest and lost. Lita had her rematch and Pidgeotto evolved and won the match. It was really awesome.
"Thanks Max," May said pulling her little brother away from the screen.
"What Max said," Lita said.
"Where are you heading?" Ash asked.
"Ice Islands. It's where May's next contest is being held. The one she will win," Lita said giving May a smile at that. "It's where Nova can evolve into a Glaceon and I can take on the ice gym. How about you two?"
"Haven't decided yet," Misty answered. "Stay safe you three."
"You as well. Watch out for my cousin Misty," Lita said and Misty gave a nod.
"May keep an eye on mine," Ash said and May nodded back. "Lita, I've realized something. You might be my biggest rival. I can't wait until we actually battle."
"You're on," Lita said and gave Ash a wink before they said good bye and hung up.
Ash stared at the blank screen for a moment. Knowing all the childhood plans he and Lita made about their journeys were gone and suddenly okay with it. "I'll get us breakfast," Ash said to Misty getting up to get them food.
When he and Pikachu got to a table Misty had a map out in front of her. "Where'd you get that?" Ash asked putting a plate down for Misty.
"Bought it," Misty said. "Better map than the one we've been using."
"Should get one of those GPS devices," Ash said as he started eating.
"Too expensive," Misty said. "So, we both have 5 badges. We need 3 more and have a choice. There are five gyms I can go to and six you can if Lance has redesigned the gym badge for mine and reopened it with a temporarily gym leader." Misty had told Ash about Lance offer for her gym after all.
"You can't get the Cerulean badge?" Ash asked and Misty shook her head. Since it was her gym she couldn't get that badge. "We should head to ones we can both get."
"That takes out water, rock, and fighting since you have the rock and I have the fighting," Misty said. "And leaves fire, ice, electric, and ground."
"I really want to take on Blaine, Surge, and Giovanni, but I know Surge is the worst gym for you," Ash said.
"Got to be able to take on electric Pokémon if I am going to be a gym leader," Misty said. "We're here." Misty pointed at Fushia on the map. "If we go up this way we'll hit this dock." Misty traced the path with her finger. "From there we can get a boat to Cinnabar for the fire gym. Afterward we can get a boat from Cinnabar Island back to Vermillion for the electric." Misty kept tracing the path. "And after that it's an easy trip back through Mt. Moon to Pewter and Viridian Forest back to Viridian for the ground gym." Misty continued tracing the path they could take.
"Sounds like a plan to me," Ash said having been eating as Misty figured it out. "And would we have a chance of bumping into Lita on this path?"
"Well if memory serves the Eevee brothers are located around here," Misty said pointing in a general area. "And Lita is heading to the Ice Island which is over here." Misty pointed in the opposite direction of where Cinnabar was. "My best guess is they are heading this way to this dock." Misty traced her finger from where the Eevee brothers were to a dock. "Completely opposite direction to get to the Ice Island. After she gets the ice badge she has a choice between water, fire, physic, or ground for her eighth badge. No way to tell where she will go. Will probably depend on May's contest schedule and what works better for the both of them. Why?" Misty was folding up the map as she asked Ash why.
"I was serious. I want to battle her," Ash said determination in his eyes as he ate and Misty started to eat. Misty gave a bit of a smile as the two chatted. "I'm going to go transfer out Honedge for Riolu."
"And I'm going to restock our supplies before we head out," Misty said the two separating to do tasks before meeting back up to head out of Fushsia and towards Cinnabar.
Post Chapter Note 1: yes, I am really spoiling you with all these updates. I got into a Pokémon mood and decided to write a bit as a distraction from Arrowverse and Harry Potter. Of course, both are still going so don't worry about them.
Post Chapter Note 2: Ash is finally growing up a little. I decided to make this a sort of continuation of my last chapter cause Ash needed to see Lita battle and start thinking of her as more than his cousin. He needed to see her as a rival.
Hope you enjoyed
