An Ice Battle
Lita, Max, and Lance had watched May contest together. May asking Lita to hold Swinub so he could see the contests. Ponyta got May through the first round easily enough. Her fire move combined with an iron tail causing a beautiful glow giving May a high score.
In the battle round May used Torchic and won her first two battles easily enough. The first one having more points at the end of five minutes and the second one by knocking out her opponent. The third and finale battle to determine the winner had been trickier and Lita had been concerned for a moment but Torchic evolved into Combusken using his new strength to finish the match and win the contest.
That night Lance treated them to a nice dinner. "Four ribbons May. Your one away," Lita said with a smile.
"You did very well," Lance congratulated May. "I can see you as a top coordinator someday." May mumbled a thank you and blushed.
"Gym battle tomorrow," Max interrupted changing the topic. "You ready to kick ass Lita."
Lita laughed at Max's phrasing. "My team is prepared," Lita said.
"I agree," Lance said. Lita had shown Lance who she planned to used. The Pokémon center had a basement with several ice fields to train on. Lance had watched her team. "I'm impressed by your little Dratini. Emerald, right?" Lita gave a nod. "That aqua jet is a unique and useful move. I suspect one of Emerald parents was a water type."
"I thought the same. Possibly a Kingdra," Lita suggested.
"Maybe, but the Dratini line is a part of two what we call egg groups. Any other Pokémon in the egg group a Dratini can mate with. Dratini is obviously in the dragon group but also what we call water 1. They are kind of an outlier in that group not being a water type, but there is a lot of possibilities for other parent," Lance said. "This all being said it would be a shame for your Dratini not to one day mate and pass on those genes. When she's a bit stronger and evolves I got several young Dragonairs and maybe even Dragonnites."
"Thanks Uncle Lance, but I think Emerald has a thing for Shelgon," Lita said.
"Bagon evolved?" Lance asked.
"Yeah during the Eevee Brothers Tournament," Lita added.
"You were in the Eevee Brothers Tournament," Lance said and the three actually giggled. "I've been a little busy to watch TV." Lance defended but had to smile himself. "Well, as for the gym battle I do have one last piece of advice." Lita gave a nod and waited for her uncle to continue. "Gym leaders save their stronger Pokémon they will use for last meaning challengers should do the same. Don't go in with Hestia from the start."
Lita gave a nod. "Thanks," Lita said knowing her uncle was right and planning who was first in her head. Emerald should be one of the first one she uses and unfortunately so should Nova. Nova had been getting use to her new ice type but she was newly evolved going against her own type. Be better not to save her for last. She also knew her VIP in this match: Hestia. She had to use her carefully.
….
The next day the group went to the ice gym. It was hard walking over the snow on crutches for Lita but Lance was staying near her to help. When they arrived they weren't the only ones there. May and Lita groaned at the familiar trainer with blue hair.
"What happened to you?" Damian said with a laugh.
"None of your business," Lita said. Lance was copyrighting the picture of Articuno for her too so she would get money every time they printed so none of it had been released yet to the public.
"You two know each other?" Lance asked.
"He's Hestia and Ponyta former trainer," Lita informed her uncle.
"Ah," Lance said understanding.
The door to the gym opened at that. "Well I'm here for a battle," Damian loudly as he entered followed by the group.
The gym leader Bianca was standing there waiting. "Of course," Bianca said. "But you are second in line. Lita has been waiting for a few days."
"Her," Damian said making a face. "Well this should be fast."
"Lita," Bianca said with a smile ignoring Damian. "I looked at your trainer profile. You have 15 Pokémon registered to your name." Damian gave a laugh. "And six badges." Damian wasn't laughing at that. "Receiving badges from Brock, Kyle, Loren, Surge, Janine, and Griffin. Not a bad collection. You are aware with six badges this is a six on six fight."
"I am," Lita said with a nod.
"Then the battle field is over here," Bianca said leading the group to the battle field. Lita had seen this on videos. The gym was designed for ice types. It was cold. Lita noticed a chair on the challenger side. "No reason for you to risk injuring yourself worst."
"Thank you," Lita said going for the chair and sitting as Bianca took the side.
"My husband William will be referee," Bianca said as the man William appeared in the room. He giving Lance a smile who smiled back. Lance getting Max and May to the side where a place was set up for people viewing the match. A nice little area to the side that had some space warmers. "There are cameras set up around the gym. Would you be opposed to this being lived streamed to my gym's website and available for viewing afterward."
"Not at all," Lita said.
"Okay, then we shall start the live stream," William said pushing a button. "This morning Bianca challenger is Lita Ketchum." William was clearly talking to the camera. "Former dragon master and elite four members Draken daughter, niece to former champion Red and current champion Lance. Before the battle begins Lita has suffered a leg injury which has been accommodated for by giving her a chair. Now…" William turned to the field. "This will be a six on six battle. Only the challenger will be allowed to substitute. Release your first Pokémon."
Lita took out her pokeball. "Emerald," Lita said as she released the Dratini. She heard Damian laughing from the side but ignored it.
"Interesting," Bianca said taking out her own pokeball. "Vanillite." The Pokémon looked like an ice cream cone that appeared. William stated for the battle to begin and Bianca was fast in sending out an ice beam.
"Use aqua jet to dodge," Lita said and Emerald used aqua jet. Water appearing around her as she used it to easily slide on the ice and miss the ice beam. "Go right at Vanillite." Emerald went right for Vanillite ice still in aqua jet. Bianca telling Vanillite to use harden. "Switch to iron tail now."
The water disappeared and Emerald was basically in the air and switch to iron tail. The attack hitting Vanillite directly and clearly doing damage. "You have trained Dratini well. I will not underestimate you," Bianca said. "Icicle Spear." The ice attack came out and emerald wasn't able to dodge them all getting hit twice. Being a dragon type that was bad damage but Emerald was still in the fight.
"Twister," Lita said and the dragon type move came out and went at Vanillite. The Pokémon using an ice wind to break it apart. But that was okay. Emerald had used the time to move away. "Flame thrower." Emerald hit Vanillite with a flame thrower. The Pokémon taking damage.
"Avalanche," Bianca yelled out.
"Respond with Flame thrower," Lita said and the two attacks hit each other. The attacks blowing up and causing an explosion making it hard to see for a moment. When the fog the two attacked created cleared Dratini was standing and Vanillite was knocked out.
"Vanillite is unable to battle. Gym leader choose your next Pokémon," William said as Bianca returned her Vanillite.
Lita looked at Emerald. She was cheering and clearly happy but had taken damaged. Lita decided to use her option to substitute and quickly returned Emerald. "Nice job, take a break," Lita said. She still had all six Pokémon technically but if it came to it she wouldn't bring Emerald back out.
"She beat an ice type with a dragon," Max said excitingly to May.
"I saw," May said back and saw Lance smirking.
"That's my girl," Lance mumbled. May saw Damian seemed unimpressed.
Lita had taken out her next pokeball as Bianca released her next Pokémon. It looked like a Sandshrew but it was white instead of brown. Clearly an ice type. Lita figured this was Alolan Sandshrew. "Nova, your turn," Lita said letting her starter out. It would be Nova's first non-practice battle as Glaceon.
"First a dragon type and now you use my own type against me. I can't decide if you're brave or stupid," Bianca said. "But it is making for an interesting match. Use rollout." Sandshrew rolled at Nova who was barely able to dodge but Sandshrew turned and did hit Nova.
Upon evolving Nova had learned one ice type move which was Icy Wind, but Lita had not concentrated on this. She was planning on using only the moves Nova had learned as an Eevee. "Shadow ball," Lita said. "Keep it up." Nova sent the shadow ball at Sandshrew who dodged some but got hit by others.
"Gyro ball," Bianca said and the steel type move hit right into Nova doing serious damage. "Go in and use metal claw."
"Respond with iron tail," Lita said and the two attacked met. The two Pokémon looking at each other for a moment before separating. "Continue with iron tail." Lita ordered as Bianca order more metal claws. The two Pokémon hitting into each other.
After a while both Pokémon separated clearly both having taken many hits. But Nova was the one to fall. "Glaceon is unable to ball," William called. "Trainer choose your next Pokémon."
Lita returned Nova. "You did well," Lita mumbled to the pokeball. Nova had hurt Sandshrew a bit. Bianca just knew exactly where to direct her attacks to do the most damage. "Rockruff." Lita tossed out the Pokémon. "You're on."
"Now we're talking," Bianca said. "Rollout." Sandshrew started rolling again and got Rockruff with a direct hit. Rockruff was still a little wobbly on the ice and couldn't move as fast as off.
"Respond with iron head," Lita said knowing she had to go on the attack. Rockruff would not be the Pokémon who could dodge. Sandshrew with rollout and Rockruff with iron head hit into each other. Sandshrew being thrown back.
"Swift," Bianca called out.
"Double team," Lita said and more of Rockruff appeared. The swift taking some of them out. "Use rock throw." Rockruff started to throw some rocks at Sandshrew who used slash to smash them.
"Ice punch," Bianca said and Sandshrew went right at Rockruff with ice punch.
"Iron tail," Lita said and the two attacked hit. After the Pokémon separated Sandshrew fell and then fainted.
"Sandshrew is unable to battle," William said. "Gym leader choose your next Pokémon."
"Rockruff you good?" Lita asked and Rockruff gave a call back. She was clearly injured but Lita wasn't sure about substituting her out just yet. She might be only down one Pokémon, but too much substitution could leave her at the end with injured Pokémon to an uninjured Pokémon. If Rockruff wanted to continue she would let her.
"Glalie," Bianca said releasing a Pokémon that looked like a floating head. "Double team."
Lita had no moves with Rockruff that could take all the copies out at once. "Tackle, take them out one by one," Lita said knowing this was a bad position as Rockruff used tackle and started taking out the copies. As the last copy left Glalie had gotten behind Rockruff and used head butt. "Iron tail while he's close."
Rockruff hit Glalie with an iron tail and then got a direct bit attack. "Iron head," Lita said knowing Rockruff didn't have long and Rockruff used the iron head move. Glalie responded with an ice shard and Rockruff was done.
Lita returned her as William stated Rockruff was unable to battle. Glalie had taken some damage. Lita releasing her Meowth Stilely. "Stilely, use your tail, remember," Lita said seeing Stilely was shaky. Stilely putting his tail down on the ice to help him direct and barely dodge and gyro ball. Glalie using an icy wind after that.
"Iron tail," Lita said having Stilely jump up and use iron tail of Glalie. Lita surprised the Pokémon was still fighting after that with the damage Rockruff did but Glalie responded back with frost breath. Stilely using scratch. The two Pokémon fighting it out for a while until an iron tail and headbutt hit each other. Both Pokémon fainting.
"Both Meowth and Glalie are unable to battle," William announced as Lita returned Stilely and Bianca Glalie.
"So they both have three left," May said.
"Yes, but Bianca has three Pokémon who have never been in battle and Lita has one injured," Max said. "Emerald wouldn't be able to take much more if Lita tossed her out."
"Max is right," Lance said. "Bianca has the advantage and she's using her stronger Pokémon now."
Lita herself was piecing that together. If both Poliwhirl and Hestia could take out the next three she would be good. If not she had lost this battle. "Poliwhirl," Lita said releasing her Pokémon. She had saved Poliwhirl for last because he was a strong fighter and ice type moves weren't that affective against him. But he also didn't have many moves that were a type advantage. She had trained him to use body slam recently.
"Lapras," Bianca said releasing a Pokémon Lita was surprised to see. Lapras was an ice and water type so allowed to be use but they were rare Pokémon. She should have known Bianca would have one. "Ice shard." Lapras sent out ice shards at Poliwhirl who expertly dodged it
"Water gun," Lita said and Poliwhirl let out water it hitting Lapras but not having the desired effect. Lapras running through the water and body slamming Poliwhirl. Poliwhirl using ice punch against Lapras. The two Pokémon trading attacks for a while, before Lita decided she had to mix this up. "Poliwhirl back off." Poliwhirl backing away from Lapras.
Lapras did exactly what Lita thought he would do and came towards Poliwhirl. "Ice beam at the floor," Lita said and Poliwhirl used ice beam at the floor making a ramp directly in Lapras path. Lapras flying up in the air. "Pound and body slam."
Poliwhirl jumped into the air and hit Lapras with a pound and then used body slam hitting Lapras hard against the ice. Lapras was knocked out on impact. "Lapras is unable to battle." William stated as Lapras was returned.
Lita sighed. Two Pokémon left and this was definitely getting harder. And when Bianca released her next Pokémon Lita was proven right. It was a powerful looking Beartic. "Poliwhirl I need you to stay in," Lita said and Poliwhirl gave a fist up.
"Aqua jet," Bianca said and Beartic went running at Poliwhirl with water all around. Poliwhirl barely managed to dodge getting hit by some water on the side. Poliwhirl used a bubble beam hitting the attack into Beartic.
Beartic charged using a slash and Poliwhirl responded with ice punch. The two attacks hit and for a moment afterward the two Pokémon stared at each other. Then Poliwhirl fell. "Poliwhirl is unable to battle," William stated. "Challenger choose your next Pokémon."
Lita returned Poliwhirl and took out Hesita ball. "It's all up to you," Lita whispered to the ball a she let Hestia out. Hestia came out and shot some flames out right away.
"Now we're really talking," Bianca said giving a smile as Damian on the sideline gave a laugh.
"She wasted a fire stone on that Pokémon," Damian said. "Well this is done."
"You don't know what you're talking about. Hestia is amazing," Max said as the battle itself started. Hestia letting out a powerful flamethrower that Beartic held up an arm to block But, it was obvious the powerful flamethrower did some serious damage.
Beartic used aqua jet against. Hestia using her tail to dodge the attack with a controlled slide. Beartic used a slash that hit but fire appeared around Hestia. "Is that fire spin?" Lita asked as the attack came out. Hestia didn't know fire spin as far as Lita knew. She had either been training on it on her own or had just learned it. The fire grew though. Lita wasn't sure if Hestia had used more than one fire attack or was just summoning as much fire as possible but it filled the field.
The heat went high and Lita herself lowered the zipper on her coat because of the heat. When the fire died down Hestia was standing on a now melted field and Beartic was out. Bianca looked shocked as she went to returned Beartic as William declared he was unable to battle.
"Melting the field," Lance said. "That will definitely help Lita."
"And Hestia barely got a scratch," Max said.
"So, Lita has a good chance," May asked. She had been concerned for a while seeing how Lita had run low on Pokémon faster.
"A good one," Lance said with a nod ignoring Damian who seemed to give a laugh at that.
Bianca gave a smile. "William, do me a favor, take this one and give me the one over there," Bianca said pointing at the rack of three pokeball behind her. "The first one."
"She's switching out one of the Pokémon she had planned to use," Lance said surprised as William came over and took the pokeball Bianca had. William putting that pokeball on his belt and giving Bianca the one she had requested before taking his referee spot back.
Bianca smiled as she tossed out her Pokémon to reveal a Glaceon. "She's using one of her Glaceon," Lance said surprised. "Bianca is famous for Glaceon training. She has three. This must be her youngest. She must be very impressed by Lita to use one of them."
"Ice fang," Bianca said and Glaceon ran out with an fire fang. The attack hit and did more damage to the fire type than Lita expected.
"Incinerate," Lita said and the fire type move hit. It did damage but not as much as Lita expected. This wasn't going to be an easy type advantage win. Lita was going to have to work for it. The two Pokémon traded attacks for a bit. Bianca seemed to be trying to use ice beam to refreeze the field but Lita had Hestia use flamethrowers to make sure that didn't happen. The ice field being gone was an advantage for Lita she was not giving up easily.
After a bit both Pokémon seemed to be getting injured and seemed to be in a stale mate. "Use the fire spin again," Lita said as Hestia summoned fire around her and ran at Glaceon who seemed ready to take the attack. "Jump now." Hestia jumped. "Flamethrower down."
Glaceon hadn't prepared the air attack and got hit badly. "Interesting, but I am ending this. Hyber Beam," Bianca said.
"Flamethrower," Lita responded and the two attacks hit each other. After a moment of the two trying to overtake each other the attacks exploded and both Pokémon got knocked back. Both got knocked out.
"Both Ninetales and Glaceon are unable to battle. Gym leader is out of useable Pokémon. The challenger wins," William stated and Lita had to blink before remembering she had returned Emerald before she had gotten knocked out. Emerald was still a useable Pokémon for her meaning she had won.
"Yes," it was May who came up to give Lita a hug as Lita returned Hestia. Lita smiled as she put an arm around her friend.
"That was amazing," Max said running over to join the hug.
"You have improved a lot since the last time I saw you battle in a gym," Lance agreed with a smile but noticed Damian was still rolling his eyes.
"Very good battle," Bianca said coming up and holding out a badge. "You deserve this." Lita smiled as she took the badge. "Your winnings will be transferred to your account and now before we end the live steam I do like giving pros and cons of the battle if you wouldn't mind."
"I'd love it," Lita said.
"Then let's start with pros," Bianca said. "You obviously picked the Pokémon you were going to use very carefully in regards to battling and able to fight on an ice field. You did well choosing your team."
"She used a dragon type," Damian yelled.
"And that dragon type won her the battle," Bianca argued back. "I will admit I was a confused by your choice of a dragon type for someone not specializing, but you clearly inherited your fathers and uncles flare with dragon types. Your Dratini is well trained and I predict will one day be hailed as one of your most powerful of a fearsome trainer." Lita was wondering if Bianca had overdone that a bit because she was annoyed with Damian. "The same prediction I have for that Ninetales of yours. It takes a powerful fire type who has been trained with care to melt this field. I made sure of that."
"I am very proud of Hestia," Lita said with a smile. "She was abandoned by her former trainer for being too weak."
"Well whoever that trainer was he or she was an idiot," Bianca said and Lita had to give a smirk as she saw Damian step back. "Now the cons. That Glaceon of yours. I know she was just evolved. She definitely needs training. Glaceon are sort of a specialty of mine and yours still fights like an Eevee. I have no doubt she's normally powerful, but she needs training. She stands no chance against another Pokémon of her type on an ice field at the moment. Leading me to wonder why you used her and my conclusion came to you didn't have a choice."
"All my other Pokémon either can't keep their footing on the ice or have a type disadvantage," Lita said. "I took my chance."
"You need to expand the amount of Pokémon you have on you. You're at the point where in your training the Pokémon you have had the longest don't need you as much. You can focus more on your newer Pokémon and expanding your team," Bianca said. "Get that Glaceon of yours into shape and I would be happy to battle her again." Bianca handed a TM to her. "Blizzard. For Glaceon."
"Thank you," Lita said and Bianca gave a nod.
"Turning off Live Stream," William said and pushed a button. "I am sure this will be a very viewed video."
"What about my battle?" It was Damian.
"You're going to have to wait as my staff fixes the field," Bianca said. "Should only take a half hour. How about we get some hot chocolate. Are you all staying to watch Damian battle?"
"Stay, watch me win," Damian said seeming smug.
"Uncle Lance?" Lita asked as Lance helped her up out of the chair and gave her the crutches.
"Why not?" Lance said as they went to get the offered hot chocolate. Lita sending her Pokémon to Nurse Joy to be healed while they watched.
Afterward they went back to the field. The group sat to the side to watch as Damian took his spot. Damian too agreeing to allow the battle to be live streamed. "This will be a three on three battle," William said meaning Damian didn't have enough badges to get a full battle here. "Only the challenger will be allowed to substitute. Begin."
Damian released a Growlithe right away. Bianca used an Alolan Vulpix. Lita smiled remembering Ash's wondering how that one was. The battle began and it was clear Damian hadn't tested how well Growlithe would do on the ice. The poor Pokémon couldn't seem to stand or move at all. Bianca Alolan Vulpix took him out without getting a scratch. Damian next Pokémon was a Larvitar who didn't do that much better on the ice than Growlithe. Once again Vulpix took it out.
"I can see why he didn't get Hestia to where you did," Lance whispered and Lita had to smile as Damian last Pokémon was Wartortle. Lita remembered thinking this might have been Damian starter once but there had been no improvement since the last time Lita saw it. Lita now wondered how Damian got Squirtle to evolve. A couple of rare candies would increase his powers and get him to the first evolution. It did do the best knocking out Vuplix but the next Pokémon Sneasel knocked him out.
"Gym leader wins," William proclaimed as Damian returned Wartortle.
"Do you want my opinion on the battle?" Bianca said.
"I know what is wrong. I still haven't found a powerful fire type," Damian said and went to march out.
"He will never learn," Lance said shaking his head. "Okay kids, we're going to do a celebratory late lunch and early dinner and then I am flying Lita home." The group nodded as May brought Lita into a hug.
….
After the dinner Lance changed the plans. "There a snow storm coming in. If it was just me I'd fly through it, but with Lita I want to wait until it clears in the morning," Lance said.
"So, we have one more night together," May said.
"Yes," Lance said. "In the morning though you're going home." Lita gave a nod understanding. With her foot the way it was she couldn't continue on her journey until it healed.

The next day Lita and May were hugging each other. "You know maybe me and Max can come back with you and we…." May started.
"No," Lita said. "Go get your fifth ribbon and then come to Pallet Town."
"I can meet Professor Oak," Max said.
"Yeah, you can," Lita said with a laugh as she saw Damian. "You training for a rematch." It was against her better judgement but she was curious.
"Nah, going to go get a better fire type. My boat is leaving soon," Damian said and headed out the door.
"What about Growlithe?" Lita asked but he was gone. "Uncle Lance, can you check if Growlithe is still registered to Damian?" Lita didn't even let her uncle say anything as he came up.
"Um…. Okay," Lance said and went to the nearby computer putting ins his league code. Bringing up Damian profile. "He has a lot of Pokémon registered to him…. but… no, no Growlithe." Lance paused. "He has been given several warnings about releasing Pokémon in unsuitable areas, especially fire Pokémon." Lance turned. Both Nurse Joy and Officer Jenny were there. "Nurse Joy, Officer Jenny, did a young man surrender a Growlithe to you."
"No," both answered after a moment.
"Officer Jenny can you grab this trainer." Lance indicated the picture on the profile he pulled up. "Don't let him leave the island. Lita, give me a moment," Lance said and Lita nodded as Lance went out into the snow.
…
Lance returned after what felt like hours holding a half frozen Growlithe. Officer Jenny had brought Damian back to the Pokémon center and Nurse Joy and her Chansey had been waiting. Nurse Joy took one look at the Pokémon though and all joy fell off her face. She brought it to the back and then returned giving Lance a sad nod. "He's dead," Nurse Joy said.
"Pathetic Pokémon," Damian said.
"Pathetic? It wasn't equipped to live in this environment. You have been warned many times about releasing Pokémon into unsuitable environments. Well your done now. Officer Jenny take all his Pokémon off him and alert wherever his other Pokémon are being stored to surrender them to the league. I am revoking your trainer card. You will no longer be allowed to own Pokémon in Kanto and Johto and your name and picture will be sent to the other regions with explanation. It will be very hard for any region to give you a new license. Officer Jenny I would assume charges on Pokémon cruelty would be in order too," Lance said.
"Yes," Officer Jenny said agreeing to this.
"You can't do this to me. My father…." Damian started.
"Your father can't do anything. Both Nurse Joy and Officer Jenny would have taken that Growlithe," Lance said.
"I would have taken that Growlithe," Lita mumbled. Growlithe was a Pokémon she wanted.
"So, would I," May said as Officer Jenny took Damian out of the center.
"Lita, come," Lance said and Lita nodded giving May one more hug and going with her uncle. Lance released one of his Dragonnite. "We'll be home soon." Lance said as he helped Lita up and held her as his Pokémon started to fly.
Post Chapter Note: well as Paul gets better I made Damian worst. I hope you liked this chapter. Now that Lita is going back to Pallet she's going to focus on trading her Tauros and expanding her team some. But it might be a while before the next update.
