"So weird…" Callie muttered, shaking her head. When Arizona shot her a questioning look, the brunette pointed to the sign on the front of the building they were about to enter. "Robbins General Store. I still can't believe you own half this town."
"I don't. My parents do."
"So you keep saying."
Rolling her eyes, Arizona held open the door and ushered the other woman inside. Immediately she spotted someone standing behind the counter and her eyes lit up. Callie was a little irritated to realise that she was jealous that the blonde was clearly excited to see whoever this other person was, following her gaze and wincing when she realised that Arizona was waving at Mark. A blush rose in her cheeks as they approached and she resolutely avoided making eye contact with him.
"Blondie, hey!" Mark greeted Arizona in delight, rounding the counter and pulling her into a tight hug. He twirled her round, her feet leaving the floor, as they both laughed. "It's been so long. How're you doing?"
"Great… I'm doing great. Sofia's awesome. Did you get the photos?"
"Yeah, I did. Thank you."
"No problem." Arizona beamed at him, before turning to look at Callie with a mischievous grin. "I think you've already met Calliope?"
"Callie." The brunette jumped in, making it clear that was the name she preferred. "Hi."
"Callie." Mark raised her hand to his mouth and pressed a kiss to the back of her fingers. "A pleasure."
"Cut it out." Arizona swatted his chest with the back of her hand, seeing how uncomfortable Callie was. "Don't tease her, Sloan."
He dipped his head slightly, looking contrite. "Sorry. Any friend of Blondie's is a friend of mine."
"Don't be an ass, either."
"Now you're just being rude."
"I can't believe you're still doing that dancing gig." She laughed at him, her grin broadening as he rolled his eyes at her. "Have you got absolutely no self-respect? I mean… I get that you did it to help pay your way through collage, but now?"
"Eh?" He shrugged. "It's something to do."
"What does Lexie think about it?"
Mark pulled a face. "She's not really a fan. I'm actually thinking of quitting."
"Hear that, Calliope? You could have had one of Mark Sloan's final lap dances."
"Now who's teasing?" He asked, nudging her in the side.
"I'm allowed, she's my fiancée."
Narrowing his eyes, Mark turned a scrutinising look on the brunette. "Yeah, I've been meaning to ask about that. How the hell did you reel this one in, Blondie? You're hot, but she's hot. She's way out of your league."
"Shut up, Sloan."
"Umm…" Callie looked between them uncomfortably. "I hate to break up this flirt-fest, but has my cell phone arrived?"
"Oh, yeah." Mark nodded and disappeared behind the counter for a moment, returning and handing her a box. "Here you go… it's all charged and ready to go."
"Thanks, buddy. I owe you." Arizona thanked him quickly, smiling and rolling her eyes as Callie immediately ripped into the box and scrabbled to turn the phone on. "Well, that's her lost for the rest of the day, then."
Callie was already on her way out of the shop, so the blonde waved a hand at her friend and followed. "Oh shit… this isn't good. I need a computer with internet access like now."
Arizona arched an eyebrow at her, but showed the brunette to the town's Internet café. She winked at the guy behind the desk and left Callie staring in horror at the ancient computer. She nearly passed out when she heard the dial-up tone and realised that it was going to take her far longer than she'd been expecting to simply check her emails.
Glancing up, Callie spotted a familiar blonde though the window and smiled. She swallowed thickly, feeling the warmth radiating in her chest as she watched Arizona jog across the street to greet someone. Callie's smile widened as the other woman turned to check there were no vehicles coming and she caught a glimpse of those intoxicating blue eyes and the adorable dimples in her cheeks.
Then the smile dropped from her lips as she realised why Arizona was smiling quite so happily. She stopped on the other side of the street to talk to Carina, laying her hand on the brunette's arm for a second. They chatted for a few moments and then Arizona threw her head back to laugh and a swirl of jealousy rose up inside Callie.
She slammed the computer mouse around on the table bad-temperedly, before giving up on checking her mail completely. Barely glancing at the man behind the desk, Callie headed quickly out of the building and across the road to stand beside Arizona. Shooting Carina a forced smile, she touched the blonde lightly on the waist, alerting her to her presence.
"Oh, Calliope, hey." Arizona smiled brightly at her. "You remember Carina from the other evening, right?"
"Yeah, hey." Callie nodded at her quickly. "We chatted yesterday, actually. How are you?"
"I'm great, thank you for asking. How are you?"
"Good, yeah. I could do with a coffee, though, Arizona?"
Nodding, the blonde agreed at once. "Catch you later, Carina. Bye."
They turned and headed in the direction of the town's coffee shop. For a moment they walked in silence, the space between them feeling cavernous. Callie glanced over at Arizona a few times and saw the same thoughtful, almost bewildered expression twisting her features each time she did. Wondering what was bothering her, the brunette sighed softly and forced herself not to ask. Surely if Arizona wanted her to know she would say something.
"So… it must be nice to catch up with your old friends while you're here?"
Arizona smiled and shrugged. "Mark's a lot, I know… but he really is the best. He's like a second annoying brother, you know?"
"He seemed nice. I guess the bar really wasn't the best place to make a first impression."
Laughing, the blonde nodded in agreement. "Very true."
"Carina looked really pretty today."
"Huh?" Arizona arched an eyebrow at her in surprise. "Yeah, I guess…"
"It must be nice seeing her again."
"I mean… it's been a long time. But yeah…"
Callie opened her mouth to say something else – she wasn't entirely sure what – when the sound of someone calling their names made them both turn. Barbara, Teddy and Sofia were heading towards them, the younger woman grinning gleefully while the older woman and the little girl were almost vibrating with excitement.
"We need you two to come with us." Barbara ordered. "We've got work to do."
"What? Mom, no…"
"Oh, come on." Her mother rolled her eyes. "No strippers this time, I promise."
Reluctantly, they trailed along after them. It soon became clear what they were needed for. The town had one wedding dress store, run by the Pierces – Barbara's oldest friend and her daughter – and that's where they were headed. Arizona sighed deeply as her mother propelled them both through the door, leaving Teddy and Sofia to follow along behind.
"Mom…"
"No, Arizona, shush. You're getting married tomorrow and you need dresses."
"Yeah, OK, but isn't it bad luck for us to see each other or something?"
Barbara paused, realising that she was right. "OK, good point. New plan. Teddy take Callie for a coffee while we sort Arizona and then we'll swap."
"Uhh?"
"Are you really going to argue this with me now, Arizona Robbins?"
"No Ma'am." She shook her head quickly, before turning to wince apologetically at Callie. "Sorry about this."
"It's fine." The brunette smiled at her. "I'll actually get my coffee after all."
As soon as they'd left, Barbara and Maggie, the owner of the store, set about pulling out dress after dress for Arizona to try on. She sighed, frowning at herself critically in the mirror and finding fault with each and every one they brought her. Sofia was beside herself with excitement, twirling around the store in her flower girl's dress, which they had found almost immediately and she had refused to take off since.
Trying on dresses made Arizona feel like a fraud. Her mother and daughter were so excited and it made the blonde feel horrible that she was going to break their hearts when it came time to admit that she and Callie were splitting up. Something else tugged at Arizona as she thought about that. She refused to acknowledge that it felt a lot like disappointment.
She had seen the clear jealousy on Callie's face when she'd been talking to Carina and that had perplexed her. Why on earth would the brunette have been jealous about her talking to her ex-girlfriend? It was only when Callie mentioned how pretty Carina had looked that it occurred to Arizona that perhaps Callie was interested in the other brunette. That had sent a surge of jealousy coursing through her and Arizona had absolutely no idea what to do about it.
They weren't a couple. None of this was real. She was simply doing Callie a favour by marrying her in order to get her parents off her back. This wasn't real.
"Oh, Arizona…" Barbara gasped, her hands over her mouth and her eyes filling with tears, as she gazed at her daughter in the latest dress she'd tried on. "You look… you look absolutely stunning, dear."
Turning to get a good look at herself in the floor length mirror, Arizona couldn't help smiling. This was the perfect dress; it was the one that she'd seen in her mind's eye whenever she'd imagined herself getting married. Turning to view it from different angles, she forced herself not to dwell on the fact that she couldn't stop thinking about the woman she was going to marry. Even the perfect dress wouldn't make Callie look at her in the way she wanted her to.
"I'll take it." She announced, inhaling sharply and nodding at her mother and Maggie.
As soon as it was safely stowed in a garment bag away from view, Arizona headed out of the store with Sofia to inform Callie and Teddy that it was time for them to swap over. She couldn't help the smile that twisted her lips as she walked into the coffee shop and found the two women in the midst of near-hysterical laughter, clearly having the time of their lives while the waited.
"Mom's ready for you." She announced, grinning between them. "Good luck."
"Thanks, babe." Callie said without thinking, leaning in to press a kiss to her cheek as she passed.
Arizona raised a hand to touch the spot that was still burning from the touch of Callie's lips, watching as the two women retraced their steps towards the store. It was only when Sofia tugged impatiently on her arm and demanded a milkshake that she realised she was lost in her own thoughts. The woman behind the counter shot her a knowing look as she took their order, chuckling as Arizona merely frowned.
It wasn't until Teddy had pushed open the door to the store that Callie realised what she'd done. It had felt so instinctual to kiss the blonde when she'd left that it hadn't even occurred to her that Arizona might find it odd. Callie's eyes went wide as she considered how the other woman might react to the action, hoping that Arizona wouldn't realise that she had developed feelings for her.
"Callie, dear… I've had a few thoughts." Barbara announced, clearly not noticing that the brunette was in a world of her own. "Obviously I know what Arizona will be wearing, so I've found a few dresses that I think will look gorgeous on you and will compliment hers. Of course you're free to tell me I'm a silly old bat and demanded that I mind my own business, but–"
"Mrs Robbins, no!" Callie shook her head vehemently. "I'm so grateful for everything that you're doing."
"It's a shame your own mother couldn't be here…"
Nodding slowly, Callie shrugged. "She's busy… they're very busy people."
"I still think it's a travesty that they're too busy for their own daughter's wedding."
"Barbara…" Teddy laid a warning hand on her arm and shook her head.
She let out a long sigh. "Sorry, sorry…"
"It's OK. I'm used to it."
The sympathetic look the older woman sent her almost made Callie cry, but she willed herself not to show how disappointed she was in her parents. She wasn't stupid – Callie knew that it wasn't just because they thought she was rushing things. Her father might have come round, but her mother was still not on board with the idea that she was bisexual. She could have been engaged to Arizona for years and they would probably still not have bothered to turn up to her wedding. Well, she had hoped her father might, but she doubted that Lucia would have shown her face.
It didn't take them long to find the perfect dress for Callie. Just as she had done when she'd seen Arizona in hers, Barbara sobbed softly as she watched the brunette emerge from behind the curtain of the changing area. Teddy patted her comfortingly on the shoulder, smiling warmly at Callie and informing her that she looked gorgeous.
"Did you bring it?" Barbara asked Teddy after a moment.
The blonde nodded and rolled her eyes, hunting for something in her purse. Carefully she extracted a box and handed it over to the older woman, before saying she was just going to pop outside for some air. When they were left alone, Barbara moved to stand beside Callie at the mirror.
"I want you to have this." She told her, holding out the box. When Callie opened it, a bemused expression on her face, she watched her reaction carefully. "It's been in the family for over one hundred and fifty years."
"It's beautiful." Callie breathed, before shaking her head and attempting to give it back. "I can't accept this."
"Don't be silly. Daniel's great-grandfather gave it to his great-grandmother when they got married. It's been passed down to the Robbins women ever since."
"Arizona should–"
"Arizona would never wear this." Barbara laughed, taking the necklace from the box and looking at it for a moment. "Tim told her that rubies brought out the red of her eyes when she was twelve and she's refused to wear them ever since."
Callie couldn't help laughing at that, able to imagine the scene perfectly. "Honestly, though, I can't accept this, Mrs Robbins. Maybe Teddy–"
Waving away her words, the older woman secured the clasp behind her neck and smiled. "I keep telling you; it's Barbara. Besides, that looks beautiful on you. I won't take no for an answer." She smiled. "But this necklace is more than just an heirloom. When Daniel's ancestor gave this to his beloved, he didn't hold out much hope that she would be able to marry him. Her family didn't approve – they didn't think he was an appropriate match for her. But love won out."
"How did they make it work?"
"She was tough like you. She refused to let anyone dictate who she was allowed to marry. She was good for her husband, like you are for my Arizona."
"Barbara…"
"You are, Callie. I can see how she looks at you. She's happier than I've seen her for a long time."
Yet again Callie wondered what the Robbins' were seeing that she wasn't. There was no look that Arizona sent her that gave her any indication that maybe her feelings weren't so one sided after all. They must just be seeing what they wanted to see. It made her feel vaguely ill and she decided that she needed to get out of the dress and the store before she threw up.
"Arizona's waiting for you in the boat." Teddy called, entering the building with Sofia just as Callie was on her way out. "She asked us to let you know."
Nodding curtly, not trusting herself to say anything, Callie made her way in the direction of the jetty. She spotted Arizona immediately, watching as the blonde hauled herself to her feet as she approached and started the engine in preparation for them to leave.
Something about the teasing smirk Arizona shot her as she leant over to untie the mooring rope spurred Callie into action. Barely waiting for the blonde to finish what she was doing, she climbed into the driver's seat and kicked the boat into life.
Arizona let out a startled scream as they roared away from the jetty, heading for open water. "Callie! What the hell are you doing? What's wrong?"
"I just needed to get away. I need to… I need to get away…"
Staring at her in concern, Arizona moved to stand beside her. She glanced at the wheel a couple of times and Callie had a sneaking suspicion she was trying to work out whether she'd be able to wrestle it out of her control or not.
"D'you wanna tell me what's going on?" The blonde demanded after a couple of minutes where they roared across the water without speaking. "Calliope? Please."
"I forgot, OK."
"You forgot? What did you forget?"
"I forgot what it's like to have a family who actually care about you." Callie snapped. "Who care more about you than they do about business strategy and profit margins and takeover bids. A family who aren't constantly worrying about how the way I live my life, who I am, reflects on them."
"Oh… sweetheart…" Arizona's face crumpled and her eyes were filled by obvious sympathy.
For some reason that just annoyed the brunette. "But that's not my life! That's yours! You have all that and you have Carina and I'm just screwing it up!"
"You're not screwing it up." Arizona assured her as firmly as she could. "Calliope… you're not screwing anything up. I agreed to this. You were there, remember?"
"Your family loves you."
"I know that."
"You know that?" Callie snorted disbelievingly. "But you're still willing to put them through this?"
"They're not going to find out!" Arizona reminded her, her panic rising as she realised that they were still speeding across the water at breakneck speed and Callie had absolutely no idea what she was doing behind the wheel.
"How do you know they won't find out?"
"Because you said so yourself, Callie! You told me–"
"But what if they do! What have I done?"
Arizona screamed as she realised that Callie had let go of the wheel to put her head in her hands, but they were still hurtling towards the metal structure a little way off. Almost shoving her out of the way so that she could attempt to regain control, Arizona was only partially aware of the brunette behind her still shouting about Sofia and her parents and Timothy and everyone else who'd be affect by their deception.
"Will you please just fucking calm down!" No sooner had the words been ripped from Arizona's throat than she was forced to turn the boat sharply to avoid crashing into the buoy. "Hold on!" She made the turn and started to slow them down, her heart pounding painfully in her chest. "Call me crazy, Calliope, but I'm pretty sure that hijacking a boat isn't the best way to work out your frustrations." When there was no response, she rolled her eyes. "Oh, now you've decided to shut up?"
Turning to frown at Callie over her shoulder, Arizona's eyes went wide and her heart seemed to stop in her chest. The back of the boat was completely empty. There was no sign of the beautiful Latina anywhere. Feeling as though her blood was turning to ice in her veins, Arizona scanned the water desperately for a sign of the other woman.
"Callie?" She screamed, not caring how desperate she sounded. "Callie!"
Spotting her floundering not far from the buoy, Arizona cursed loudly and immediately turned the boat around. She called out to Callie, telling her to hold on to the structure bobbing on the surface of the water, slowing the boat right down as she circled back and got as close as she dared to. Arizona was sure that she could hear her blood rushing in her ears as she drew up alongside the brunette. She couldn't remember ever feeling so terrified in her life.
"Give me your hand." Arizona ordered, leaning out and reaching for her. "Callie, come on. I've got you. Give me your hand."
Hesitantly, possibly feeling even more terrified than the blonde was, Callie reached out and grasped her proffered hand. Arizona, displaying a strength that neither of them had really been aware she possessed, hauled the other woman back onto the boat and proceeded to do whatever she could to warm her up.
"Oh my god… Calliope." She breathed, grabbing a sweater and a blanket from under the seat and wrapping her up in them tightly. "You nearly got yourself killed!"
"You turned the boat and threw me out, you moron!"
"You let go of the steering wheel!"
There was a split second of silence and then the brunette let out a loud sob, her fear finally exploding from her. Arizona's expression softened immediately and, wrapping her arms around her, she pulled Callie as close as she physically could. She held her tightly, rubbing her arms and legs to try and bring some warmth back into her. Something inside Arizona snapped as she felt the brunette curling into her side, her face buried in her hair and her tears soaking into her sweatshirt.
"You're safe now, Calliope. I've got you. You're safe."
