Unexpected
A/N- Hullo guys! It is a one-shot fic. Hope you enjoy it.
It was a Tuesday and Marlene did not like Tuesdays.
Why? Because Tuesdays meant double-Potions right after breakfast…and she was terrible at it. One would think that after seven years of Potions class, she would've improved but no! She managed to get to the NEWTs level Potions class by the scrap of her wand.
Thankfully, her room-mate and best-friend- Lily Evans was always there to help any of them. Actually, she was there to help anyone, even the Slytherins and it just proved how kind-hearted her friend could be.
"Come on, Marlene! We need to go to class!" Lily's voice came floating towards her as she tried to block out the voice with layers of blanket.
"It's a Tuesday! I don't want to wake up!" Marlene complained from under her blanket.
"Marlene, if you don't wake up then I am going to wake you up in a less pleasant manner," Lily said, "Also, I wouldn't want to explain to your boyfriend why you are absent."
There was another thing about her friend too. She hated missing any of the classes and made sure that Marlene would never miss classes too. No matter how much she tried to convince her, Lily would never listen. She was very stubborn. And there was the fact that Sirius would be mad with worry if she didn't go down for breakfast.
Marlene groaned and sat up.
"C'mon. Let's get it over with," she said.
They both went down to the common room. The marauders were waiting for Lily and Marlene.
"Hello, Lily-flower," James said as he kissed Lily.
"Hullo, Siri," Marlene said glumly as Sirius swooped down and captured her lips in a kiss.
Sirius laughed and said, "Why so glum, darling?"
"It's a Tuesday!" Marlene exclaimed as if that would explain everything. It kind of did.
"Marlene, you know that education is important," Lily said condescendingly.
"It's healthy to ditch sometimes," Marlene argued, "isn't it, Sirius?"
But, Sirius wasn't listening to their conversation. He was staring at a wall with his eyebrows furrowed like he was thinking something. A feat in itself.
Marlene frowned and said, "Sirius? SIRIUS!"
Sirius jerked as he looked down at Marlene.
"Yes, love?" he asked.
"Welcome to the real world, prat," Marlene said, "What were you thinking?"
"Nothing important," Sirius said although his eyes deceived him. He could never lie to his girlfriend of three years.
Marlene narrowed her eyes but didn't say anything. She knew that Sirius would tell her if it was important to her. Besides, everyone had their own secrets. What kind of a girlfriend would she be if she didn't let her boyfriend have his personal space? She wasn't delusional enough to think that every waking hour of Sirius was spent by thinking of her.
"Come on. Let's grab something to eat before we go to Potions," Remus said and Peter readily agreed.
TIME SKIP- POTIONS CLASS
"Okay everyone," Slughorn boomed, "today you all will be making the Draught of Living Death…without seeing the instructions!"
Marlene groaned. She was doomed.
"Now, since I am sure many of you have forgotten the recipe, you will be working in pairs!" Slughorn said a few moments later.
Marlene sighed in relief.
"Mr. Pettigrew with Ms. Meadows
Mr. Lupin with Mr. Brocklehurst
Mr. Black with Ms. Evans
Mr. Potter with Ms. McKinnon"
Marlene stopped hearing after that. It was good for her that James would be her partner. He was good at potions and the perfect person to interrogate about Sirius.
"You getting the ingredients or should I?" Marlene asked as James made himself comfortable on the chair.
"You get the ingredients and I will setup the cauldron," James said as he quickly jotted down the ingredients needed for the Potion.
Marlene nodded slightly as she grabbed all the ingredients from the students' cupboard and brought them to their table, but not before shooting a concerned glance at Sirius.
"Okay, so…first add the infusion of wormwood followed by the powdered root of asphodel," James said as Marlene followed the instructions.
Then, he stirred the potion clockwise twice.
"Add the sloth brain and then twelve Sopophorous bean's juice," James said as she did exactly that.
"Now, stir the potion clockwise till the potion is a light pink color," he muttered to himself as he started to stir the potion.
"James," Marlene said suddenly, "What is Sirius thinking?"
James hesitated a bit and said, "It is for him to tell, Marlene."
Marlene bit her lip and nodded.
"Before I forget," James said as they cleaned their station, "Sirius wanted me to give it to you."
He handed Marlene a small parchment which she took with a barely audible 'thanks'.
The writing was as follows-
Marlene,
Please meet me by the lake in 7. I have something important to tell you.
It wasn't signed but the handwriting was unmistakably Sirius'. Marlene was a nervous wreck that whole day- however much she tried to hide it. By the time it was seven, she donned a casual dress, calmed her nerves and went to the lake.
She gasped. The lake's shores had purple wildflowers, a table and a chair with candles giving off a romantic vibe. Sitting on one chair was Sirius, wearing a suit. As he saw Marlene, his face brightened up.
"Walk with me," he murmured as he held out his arm which Marlene grasped like a proper lady.
He took her to a clearing and knelt down in front of her.
"Marlene McKinnon, you are the love of my life. I can't bear to part with you. I will love you forever. Will you marry me?" Sirius said as he got down on one knee and presented her with a beautiful engagement ring.
Marlene was wide-eyed as she answered, "YES!"
Sirius laughed and kissed Marlene. As they broke the kiss, he said, "Merlin's beard! I was afraid that you would reject me!"
Marlene laughed.
Tuesday became the best day of the week for Marlene and Sirius.
