A nice little prequel to my last The Mitchells VS The Machines fic, "Jade IS In Fact Coming For Thanksgiving". Go check that one out if you haven't.

Happy Pride Month!

Katie knew she liked Jade but not what to do about that fact. She knew she liked Jade and Jade's cool earrings and the fact that Jade was just as passionate about filmmaking as her, what she didn't know was how to ask Jade out.

It wasn't like this would be her first time asking a pretty girl out, but Jade was different. Jade was her best friend here, and she wanted to be in a relationship with her more than she'd ever wanted to be in a relationship with anyone else.

"Come on Katie, you can do this… You saved the world! You can ask a girl out." She was talking to a sock version of herself, her go-to for pep talks.

"It's not that hard to say, 'Hey, Jade, I really like you, I was wondering if you wanted to go on a date with me?' Yep. I can do this." Her legs felt like jelly but she forced herself to stand. She took a deep breath and glanced at a photo of her family, imagining Aaron and her parents cheering her on. Yeah, she could do this.

Feeling confident, she stepped into the hall and almost ran directly into Jade.

"Oh, babe, hi! I mean Jade. Hi, Jade."

Jade laughed, "You can call me babe, Katie."

Katie felt her insides melt in a good way.

"O-okay."

Jade put her hand on Katie's arm and steered her away from the hallway crowd.

"Anyway, I have something to ask you."

"Oh yeah?" Katie's own ambitions fell away, eager to listen to whatever Jade had to say. Maybe Jade needed help with a project, or wanted to go on another late-night adventure, or needed help doing her homework and her nails at the same time. No matter what it was, Katie knew she'd follow Jade Jordan anywhere.

"Yeah." Jade seemed a little nervous, which was new. The Jade that Katie had come to know seemed fearless about just about everything other than the robot apocalypse.

"You can ask me anything," Katie said encouragingly, which seemed to embolden Jade.

"Alright. Katie Mitchell, I really like you. Do you want to go on a date with me?"

Katie's head just about exploded. She stood there in stunned silence, a thousand thoughts going through her head all at once.

"Katie? You okay?"

"Y-yeah, I'm great. I'm really good. I'd love to go on a date. With you."

"Really? Because you seem kind of shaken."

"I just can't believe it, Jade. I was just about to ask you out."

Jade burst out laughing.

"We must be made for each other then, huh?"

"We must." Katie reached for Jade's hands and squeezed them. Jade squeezed back.

"I'm so excited for our first date," Jade said.

"What should we do?" Now Katie was getting excited as well.

"Anything, everything! The world is our oyster."

"Oyster, huh?"

"Yup."

"I'm glad you asked me out first because I was so nervous I thought I was just going to clam up," Katie joked.

"Boo," Jade said, laughing despite herself.

"Does it make me shellfish that I want you all to myself?" Katie continued.

"Katie we just started dating, don't make me break up with you."

"You're gonna have to get used to the bad puns if you want to date me."

Jade squeezed Katie's hands once more, "I really, really do want to date you. More than I've ever wanted to date anyone. Bad jokes and all."

"I feel the same way," Katie agreed, leaning towards Jade. The rest of the world seemed to melt away and suddenly they were kissing, sure of nothing except the fact that they belonged together.
