Summary:

Hikawa Tohru yearns for a life he can't have.

"Good morning!"

The boy looked up from underneath his brown locks. The voice had come from across the street, but the words weren't addressed to him.

The voice was bright and energetic. Joyful and carefree. The words could make anyone forget the tragedies of life and ascend to a state of pure happiness. They did that for him as well, but hearing them also made him sad and depressed too. His head ached, but it was nothing compared to the striking feeling in his chest. Each beat from his heart throbbed with the sorrow of his untold secret.

He hung his head low, staring silently at the cold concrete below his feet. He leaned closer to the equally cold wall for comfort, which it did not give him.

Emptiness filled him. It even crept under his fingernails. He could not cry for it might give him away. He could not say anything, for the answer might crush his spirit.

The thought had crossed his mind before, undeniably more than once. The thought of what could be. The thought of what he wanted it to be. But every time, he pushed it down, not allowing himself something so unrealistic.

Chills slithered up through his knees.

Would it be so scary to try?

He did not want to be like this. He wished it were as simple as three words, but it wasn't. It wasn't to him.

His face loomed endlessly. It had been there from the beginning, and once it rooted itself, it never left.

He brought him pain, but it was justified.

It was his choice to feel it. To concede to misery.

Introspection, a constant reminder of what he lacked.

In a heartbeat, he could be his. In the seconds it took to reveal everything, his suffering would be lifted.

But he let go of it again. Released the dream of being with him, knowing this wouldn't be the last time he released it.

Always watching from afar. Wish never fulfilled.
