Brown eyes scanned the waiting room in search of a certain blonde. Police officers littered the vast police station waiting room and front lobby. Officers, detectives, various techs, all passed through the room, a purpose in their step as they went on. Jane wrapped her arms tighter around her daughter who stood between her legs.
It had been a long two months, and Jane was beyond excited to see her girlfriend, but they may have arrived to New York City just a few days too early for their 4th of July weekend together.
Two days previous, Jane had walked into her mother's house one afternoon after mowing the lawn, to find Hayley Mae sitting on the couch watching cartoons. The little girl had been sad ever since Maura left for her internship, and Jane had hoped that she would perk up after a few days. But two months in, and Hayley Mae was still sad. Angela had come up with an idea to put a calendar at her house, so the little girl could mark off each day as a count down. But that only cheered her up till she marked off the first day and saw all the days still to go.
Jane felt compelled to do something.
"Hey…what do you think about going to visit Mo a few days early?"

Now, two days later, they sat in the waiting room, waiting – hoping – that Maura would walk by so they could say hi. From what Maura had described in one of their phone calls, the morgue was in the basement of the central police station, but she was often in the bullpen, running reports to detectives.
When they had walked in, they told the desk sergeant who they were, and who they were looking for and he'd sighed and told them to have a seat while he called down to the morgue. Jane took a seat and pulled her daughter onto her lap. Hayley Mae had squirmed enough with excitement, that Jane let her stand between her legs. Wide, hazel eyes stared at the activity around them.
"Now remember," Jane whispered in her ear, "Mo is busy, and we're here a few days early, so if she can only stop for a minute to say hi, don't get upset when she has to go back to work."
The little girl nodded.
An elevator door opened to their left, and a group of people walked off, all talking amongst themselves.
Jane spotted a familiar shade of blonde hair in the group.
Before she could say anything, the little girl must have seen her too and called out, "MO!"
Jane clamped her hand over her daughter's mouth and tried to admonish her when Maura stopped with a dropped jaw and a look of surprise.
As she came their way, Jane let go of her squirming daughter to run into Maura's waiting arms.
"Mo!" Hayley Mae squealed again as she wrapped her little arms around Maura's neck.
Jane noticed Maura's eyes slip closed a moment before opening again. Hazel eyes had turned stormy in a way she'd never before, and Jane was sure, just then, that she had screwed up. Maura put the girl down and led them back to the elevator, "Follow me."
The elevator opened two floors down into the basement and Maura led them down a hall into a small office occupied by three desks. A young woman, dressed in a pair of scrubs similar to Maura's, sat at one of the desks, writing in a file.
"Amy?" Maura started, "can you watch my friend here for just a moment?"
The woman nodded with a bright smile. The blonde leaned down and kissed Hayley's head, "baby, will you stay here for just a second while I talk to your mother?"
"Are you coming back?" the little girl asked
"Of course. I just need to talk to your mother a moment. Okay?"
Hayley Mae nodded.
"This is my friend Amy, and she's very nice. We'll be right back."
Maura grabbed Jane's wrist and dragged her down a hall, around a few corners, till they reached a locker room that Maura dragged her into.
She pulled the brunette past a few rows of lockers to the back, while Jane apologized.
"God, Maura, I'm so sorry for coming here and barging into your workplace. Fuck, I should have called first. Please forgive me."
Before Jane could speak another word, Maura pushed her against a wall and kissed her hard. She invaded Jane's mouth with a vengeance.
The sounds of their sloppy kisses and panting breaths echoed in the otherwise empty locker room.
Maura forced herself to pull back before things went too far. Though, with Jane's hands on her ass, holding their hips close, things were getting pretty far.
"So…" Jane panted, "not mad."
Maura smirked and sucked Jane's lip between hers; biting playfully, "ecstatic, actually."
The blonde reattached her lips to Janes before pulling away again, "I know it's only been a few weeks… but fuck." She growled, running her nose along Jane's neck, "I've missed you."
Jane whimpered, pulling Maura into another tongue tangling kiss. Jane bent her knees just enough so she could reach down to Maura's ass better and pull their hips tighter together.
Maura pulled herself completely away with a groan, and stepped a few feet away, wiping her mouth.
"Why'd you stop?" Jane whined
"Because. We had an agreement. And I don't want our first time to be a rushed locker room encounter."
Jane's cheeks flushed as her brain quickly imagined a scenario. She bit her lip to stifle another whimper.
Maura fidgeted and adjusted her scrub top.
Jane took in Maura's full appearance for the first time. Scrub pants with a scrub shirt to match, a white knee length jacket and her hair up in a bun resting low on the back of her head.
"Fuck." She murmured
Maura looked down at herself with skeptical eyes, "What? Do I have something on me?"
"You're so hot."
Maura raised her head with curious eyes, "I'm in scrubs. How is that attractive?"
The brunette rolled her eyes, "Uh, the doctor will see you now?" she said with a husky lilt.
Maura's eyes shone with a mischievous gleam, "Yeah?"
Jane pulled her eyes from Maura's chest, "…yeah."

They agreed that before any shenanigans could ensue, they needed to extract themselves from the situation. Maura led Jane back to her office, hand in hand. They found Hayley Mae sitting at Maura's desk, drawing on a piece of paper.
"Thanks Amy." Maura smiled
The other woman nodded and grabbed her things to leave. Before she left, she pulled the blonde aside and whispered, "Hey, you know, if you want, I can cover you if you want to go home early."
"Seriously?" Maura whispered back.
Amy's eyes travelled up and down Jane's body appreciatively, "As long as you cover for me when my girlfriend is in town in two weeks."
The blonde smiled, "deal." She grabbed her purse and sweater, "Hayley Mae." She started as the little girl looked up at her with a goofy grin, "What are your thoughts on hot dogs, lemonade and a park?"
"YAS!"
Maura turned to a surprised Jane, "What? I can eat hotdogs."
The librarian chuckled, "Okay, miss fancy pants. Let's roll."
Hayley handed her drawing to Amy with a smile, "that's for you."
Maura held her hand out for Jane, but Hayley Mae lunged in front of her mother to take it instead, grinning mischievously up at her mother.

The three made their way down a few blocks from the police station to a small corner park. It wasn't much, but there were multiple food trucks and quite a few business folk milling around on their lunch breaks. Jane got a couple of tacos from one truck, and Hayley Mae got a few hotdogs from another. They sat down, Hayley Mae in Maura's lap, and ate a quiet lunch together, taking in the sounds of the city.
"So, not that I'm complaining," Maura started, "but what brings you so early?"
Jane shrugged, "we missed you. Couldn't wait another day."
Maura's smile brightened, "I missed you too, both of you." The blonde leaned forward and placed a soft kiss on Hayley Mae's head.
"Sorry if we messed up your work or whatever. We're fine with going back to your place if you need to go back."
The blonde shrugged, "No, I'll take the rest of the day, though I might have to go in tomorrow. So, since I have the rest of the day off, what would you like to do?"
Jane looked around the park, "I've only been here twice, both when I was a kid. I would imagine quite a bit has changed. Whatever you want to do is cool."
Maura looked down at the little girl in her lap. Hayley Mae's eyes were wide as she surveyed the park around her. She had leaned back into Maura's chest, the straw of her juice box tight between her lips.
"We've never been to a park this big before, have we?" Jane smiled
Hayley Mae just shook her head and kept looking at everything.
"There's a nice little pond across that bridge over there, Hay." Maura whispered in her ear, "And it's usually full of geese…would you like to see it?"
In lieu of a response, the little girl jumped from Maura's lap, grabbed her hand and tried to pull her and her mother along.

It was just past dinner when the three entered Maura's apartment. Hayley Mae was zonked out in her mother's arms, head lolling on Jane's shoulder.
"Put her in the guest room." Maura whispered, pointing down the hall as she locked the front door behind them.
Jane came back out a few moments later, looking almost as tired as her daughter did before falling asleep on the car ride back to the apartment. She found her girlfriend in the living room, picking up her folded, clean laundry from the couch and putting it in a basket.
"You don't have to clean up for me." Jane's smokey voice rumbled
Maura turned with a smile, "Well, I figured we could sit and talk, and I wanted to move some things so we could."
Jane stepped into the blonde's space and wrapped her arms around the smaller body in front of her, "I was thinking we could get in our jammies and crawl into bed. I've been up since 4am packing and driving to get here. I've had a long day and I think I deserve some snuggles."
Maura smiled; feeling somewhat relieved, "Oh, that sounds much better."
Soon the two were lying in Maura's large bed, wrapped up close in each other. Jane's eyes were closed, but the blonde knew she was still awake; at least partly.
"I'm so glad you're here." Maura whispered, placing a gentle kiss on Jane's forehead.
The brunette hummed, "Me too."
The next morning, Maura woke to a text from her coworker, Amy, Told Mike you weren't feeling well, He told me to tell you to take the day and just start your weekend early. Enjoy ;) ps…you owe me…
With a smile, Maura dropped her phone back on the nightstand and resolved to sleep another hour or so, wrapped in her favorite person's arms.
