Notes: So this was a silly prompt that obviously got out of hand. You guys should know me by now. Hope you enjoy this one. Here's my entry for day 2: bed sharing / one bed.
Summary: Beca, Chloe and Amy somehow find themselves sharing an apartment in NY. Beca didn't expect to be sharing a bed with Chloe but what she really didn't see coming was having a girlfriend at the same time.
How things should be
Their first few months had been hectic. They were all getting used to their own jobs. Chloe was planning to enroll in vet school early next year so she's currently working as a vet's assistant. Beca was starting out as a junior producer and no one's really sure what Amy's been up to.
Beca felt like she was only living with Chloe and she didn't mind that. Amy always had her own thing going on. She would be in and out of their apartment but they would all sometimes go out on the weekends. Most of the time it was just Beca and Chloe.
Four months in Beca made a confession to Chloe. It wasn't easy for her to open up but this was Chloe and she couldn't keep it from her any longer.
In one of their nights in, Beca decided it was time to tell Chloe. They were already in their pyjamas getting ready for bed. Beca's been antsy about this the whole week. She wasn't sure if Chloe noticed but as always Chloe was patient with her and waited for Beca to talk to her in her own time.
Beca found courage once the lights were turned off. Amy was out with who knows who and it was just her and Chloe.
Chloe had her back turned to Beca and she thought it was now or never. "I have something to tell you." She said in almost a whisper.
Beca could feel Chloe turning to face her. She didn't dare look because she might chicken out.
Chloe was facing Beca now using her tucked arm to hold her head up. "Is everything okay?"
"Yeah. Everything's great." Beca said but she didn't sound great.
"Okay…"
"I'm seeing someone."
Chloe doesn't say anything. She knows Beca had more to say after that.
"Her name's Charlie. I think you've met once or twice. I work with her. We've been talking and hanging out a lot and last week she asked if I could be her girlfriend and I said yes."
Beca doesn't understand why she was feeling guilty or embarrassed. It was almost as if she felt like she was cheating on Chloe.
"Oh." It was all Chloe could say. She wasn't sure what to feel about it. She figures she's seen it coming. Beca had been busier with work. The past few weeks Beca's been coming home late and had to cancel a few of their lunches and dinners together.
When Beca didn't say anything more, Chloe knew she had to say something more than 'oh'. But she couldn't. She didn't trust her voice at the moment and she was blinking back tears she wasn't expecting to be there. She was thankful they were having this conversation in the dark. She kept her eyes on Beca's silhouette and her heart broke. She always thought it was going to be her and Beca in the end.
"So yeah. There's that. I'm sorry I didn't tell you sooner."
Chloe was finally able to recover. "Don't be silly Bec. Are you happy?"
Beca looked at Chloe for the first time and Chloe's breath hitched when their eyes met. She wasn't sure if it was her seeing things but she couldn't read Beca's expression.
Beca sighed then turned back to face the ceiling. "Yeah." She said but she wasn't convincing anyone even herself. Beca thought she was happy. She should be, right? Why wouldn't she be happy?
"Good. As long as you're happy then I'm happy. I can't wait to meet her."
"I think you'll like her." Beca finally turns to her copying Chloe's position. They were face to face now.
Chloe doubts she'll like her but she smiles and nods anyway. "Now that you got that off your chest, you think you'll be able to sleep now?"
Beca laughed at that. She knew Chloe noticed. Chloe always does. "This doesn't change anything right?"
"What do you mean?"
"Like you and me. I'm still your Beca. I'm still going to be your best friend. I won't be like your other friends that just disappear cause they're seeing someone. And you're still my Chloe. My best friend."
Just your best friend.
"I know and this doesn't change anything."
"Good."
It changes everything though. It happened little by little but Chloe prepared herself for that. It was only natural that she would be seeing Beca less and less. Charlie had the right to Beca's time. Charlie had the right to demand for it. She had every right to be spending time with her girlfriend and Chloe didn't so she couldn't complain that she was seeing Beca less and less.
She appreciated Beca trying though. They made Thursdays theirs. It was the one day of the week that Beca made sure to spend with Chloe. No matter what would come up it was their day. Just her and Beca.
"Just be honest with me. I won't be hurt I promise. I just have to know whether you like Charlie."
Beca's been obsessed about that issue on their whole uber ride home. Beca had a work event that she invited Chloe to. She said Charlie didn't mind that Beca brought Chloe as her plus one. She wanted Chloe to meet the people she's been working with since Beca was already friends with all the people Chloe works with because she frequents the clinic so much.
"I swear Chlo. You won't hurt my feelings. I just have to know. It would mean a lot to me and I always want to know what you think."
Chloe was in the middle of brushing her teeth. She knows tipsy Beca wouldn't let this go.
"It's a yes or no question and there are no wrong answers." Beca continued.
"Bec it's not important. You're the one dating her not me. As long as you like her and you're happy, it doesn't matter what I think."
"Of course it matters what you think. So does that mean you don't like her?"
"Don't put words in my mouth. I didn't say that."
"You also didn't say you did."
Chloe wanted to say maybe Beca should be asking Charlie that. It was obvious Charlie didn't like Chloe from the get go. If only Beca saw the dagger stares Charlie gave Chloe most of the night. "I've only met her a few times. Maybe it just takes more time for us to warm up to each other."
"Right. Yeah. You're right. Okay. I'm sorry. I just really want you two to get along."
"Why?"
"Because you're a part of my life. Forever."
"And you are a part of mine. So don't worry about it okay?"
Beca could already hear Chloe moving about their kitchen and getting ready for her day at work. Chloe's work starts an hour early so she would always be up earlier than Beca.
In reality, it didn't matter what time their work started. Chloe would always be up earlier than Beca.
Beca didn't want to push it but she felt like Chloe was distancing herself from her. She could sense Chloe's been hesitant to hold her or scoot closer to her when they're sleeping. Chloe is the most touchy feely person she knows and she could feel Chloe had been touching her less and less. She doesn't reach out to hold Beca's hand or her arm or squeeze her thigh when she was excited about something or her signature hugs after a long day.
Beca missed it. She misses Chloe but she wasn't sure how to bring it up without sounding like a douche. Chloe wasn't the one seeing someone else. She was the one with a girlfriend after all.
Some days Charlie would pick her up from her apartment and they would drive to work together. Beca was running a little late so she invited Charlie to come up. It was the first time Charlie had been invited up.
Beca was getting dressed and Charlie couldn't help but stare at their makeshift bed. At first glance, you could already tell which side was Beca's. She has never forgotten when Beca told her she was sharing a bed with her best friend.
It didn't help when she met said best friend and that she saw she was pretty and sweet and charming and hot. Charlie couldn't even begin to imagine sharing a bed with someone like that and not feel anything.
"Isn't it weird that you're sharing a bed with Chloe?"
"Not really. We've been doing it since college." Beca answered nonchalantly. "Why? Is it weird?"
Charlie knows how protective and defensive Beca can get when it came to her best friend so she treads the water carefully. "You know. You could move in with me and share a bed with me instead."
Charlie was trying to be playful but Beca shut her down. "Charlie we talked about this. I signed a contract. I can't just leave my friends hanging."
"I know I know. That would be a dick move. Was it a one year contract did you say?"
"Yeah." Beca said. That was a lie. It was a 6-month contract and it was probably up for a renewal soon.
"I live alone. You know that, right?"
"Yeah." Beca says again.
"So you should sleep over some time." Charlie said with a wink at Beca.
"Keep it in your pants. We're running late already." Beca shuts her down again. She looked around and grabbed her things. "Anyway, you ready to go?"
"Yeah. Let's." Charlie tries to hide her disappointment and reached for Beca's hand.
Beca was just about to reach for it when she remembers Chloe's lunch. "Oh fuck I almost forgot. Chlo would kill me." She scurries back to their apartment and grabbed Chloe's lunch.
"We're running late already. We won't have time to pass by the clinic."
"Don't worry about it. I'm gonna bring it to her later during our break." Beca opens the door for her and they head off to work.
Chloe insists there was nothing going on between her and Steve but Beca thought otherwise. It was about time Chloe started seeing someone. She deserved someone who would take care of her and appreciate her.
"You can tell me you know."
"I will if there was anything to tell."
"Come on Chlo. You've gone out with him more than a handful of times. You wouldn't entertain him if there wasn't anything there."
"He asks me every week if I want to have dinner with him and I do that's why we keep going out. There's really nothing more to it. We're just friends hanging out."
"Do you like him?"
"Not in the way you think. No."
"Well I still want to meet him. Let's go on a double date."
"I think that's a terrible idea."
"Why is it a terrible idea?"
"Because we're not dating."
"So? Let's all go have dinner then. A friendly dinner where you bring Steve and I bring Charlie."
Chloe couldn't say no to Beca when she was being like this. "Fine. If Charlie agrees to this then let's do it."
"No it's happening whether or not she agrees. If she doesn't want to join us then I'll be third wheeling to you two I don't mind."
"We both know if there's anyone playing third wheel it's going to be Steve."
"Just say yes already so we can set a date."
"Fine. Let's do what you want."
Chloe was right. This was a terrible idea. Beca hated seeing that Steve was at the receiving end of Chloe's touches. Chloe had this habit of slapping you and her hand would latch on to wherever it landed when she laughed or when she finds something funny.
Beca hated that she was the one making Chloe laugh and Steve was the one reaping the rewards.
Beca couldn't stop herself from reaching over to Chloe's plate and poke at whatever food she set aside. She also couldn't stop herself from giving Chloe the last piece of chicken wing knowing it was her favourite.
Beca also couldn't stop herself from refilling Chloe's drink from time to time when she sees it running low and she couldn't stop herself from handing Chloe napkins when she felt like Chloe needed them.
Beca was being too attentive to Chloe's needs and she jut couldn't help it. The grateful smile Chloe would give her and the subtle wink thrown her way every time Beca did something for her was worth it and it was like she craved them.
If Charlie noticed it, she didn't say anything. Beca hated it most that Steve was a nice guy and he and Chloe looked good together. She knows Chloe says they're just friends but she could see Chloe falling for a guy like him.
After they pay for dinner, the four of them were standing outside the restaurant. It was awkward. There were two uber drivers waiting outside and Beca and Steve each went to one. Chloe then started walking over to Steve's.
"Chlo where you going?" Beca calls out to her.
They all looked to her confused but Beca's eyes stayed on Chloe. She wasn't sure whether Beca was oblivious to the stares everyone was giving her, especially Charlie, or she just doesn't care.
"Home Bec. Where else would I be going?"
"Ride with me then. I'm going home too."
Charlie's jaw was on the floor. Before anything got out of hand, Steve stepped in to diffuse the situation.
"Don't worry I got this. I'll get her home safely I promise."
"Yeah that's all well and good dude but we live together. It doesn't make sense if we take different cars."
Charlie seemed to have recovered and put an arm around Beca's waist. "Who said anything about you going home?"
Beca turned away from Chloe for the first time and was surprised at how close her face was to Charlie's when she turned to face her. She was about to insist again that she and Chloe should ride home together when Chloe beat her to it.
"It's okay don't worry about us. Have a good night you two. I'll see you tomorrow or whenever Bec. Thanks for dinner. We should do this again sometime." Chloe says to both Charlie and Beca.
"Yeah. I look forward to it too." Steve added before offering Chloe to get in first. "After you."
Chloe smiles up at him then gets in the car followed by Steve and all Beca could do was watch Chloe's uber drive away.
Beca was mindful of the time when she enters their apartment at the wee hours of the night. She didn't want to wake Chloe who she was hoping would be home. Beca smiled at Chloe's sleeping figure when she saw her and noticed she was hugging Beca's pillow.
When she was done washing up and was ready for bed, she couldn't help but pull the pillow away from Chloe's embrace so that she could position herself there instead. She was hoping it wouldn't wake Chloe but it did. Chloe was surprised to see her but lifted her arm anyway and Beca gladly settled in.
She put an arm over Chloe and nestled her face on Chloe's neck. She missed this. She inhaled the familiar scent and smiled. She really missed this.
"What are you doing here? What time is it?" Chloe sounded sleepy and Beca knows her eyes are still closed.
Beca nuzzled her face into Chloe some more. "Thank you for being here."
She felt Chloe chuckle. "Where else would I be?"
"Maybe you changed your mind about going home I don't know. Did Steve stay long?"
"Nah. He just walked me to the door. I told you. We're just friends. Now what are you doing here?"
"Nothing happened with me and Charlie. She's been really patient. When I turned her down again, she was really sweet about it and said we could just cuddle but it didn't feel right."
Chloe stopped breathing and her eyes shot open. She wasn't expecting that answer from Beca. She didn't want to hope or anything but there was something different with how Beca was being now.
"We broke up." Chloe heard her say.
"Oh Bec. I'm so sorry. Are you okay?"
"No."
Chloe cringed at herself. Of course Beca wasn't okay.
"I ended things with her. I was stupid and selfish and I don't know why I said yes to being her girlfriend in the first place. I haven't been okay since."
"What do you mean?" Chloe tried to pull away and look down at Beca but Beca just held on to her tighter.
"I knew who I wanted all along and I don't know why I had to drag someone else in and ruin what we had."
"Hey. What are you saying Bec?"
"I could feel you slipping away slowly. I know you've been avoiding me and I know you've been holding back. I also think I know the reason why. I'm sorry I've been an idiot about this whole thing. I'm sorry I kept denying my feelings for you. I don't care if I got it all wrong and you don't feel the same way. I'm going to say it anyway. I love you Chloe. I love you more than a best friend should and I could never forgive myself if I lost you for dating Charlie. I hope I'm not too late."
Chloe then heard Beca sniffling but she couldn't tell if she was crying. Beca's hold on her was tight and she wasn't letting Chloe move. "But if I am too late and I have lost you already. Just hold me for tonight please. That's all I ask."
Chloe was shaking her head. She stopped resisting and squeezed Beca a little tighter. She kissed the top of her head. "Go to sleep. I promise you I'll be here when you wake up and we will talk more in the morning. You're not losing me. I love you too. More than a best friend should."
She felt Beca stiffen in her arms and then let out a breath. "I'll make it up to you Chlo I promise."
"Shh. Sleep Bec. We'll have plenty of time to talk. You're not getting rid of me that easily."
"I should be saying that to you. I'm not going anywhere."
Chloe can only roll her eyes. Beca just really had to have the last say. She kissed her on the top of her head again and felt Beca smiling before they both gave in to sleep.
