It was a hot summer's day in the land of Ooo and Finn was sitting under a large oak tree. Beside him was Huntress Wizard meditating. He had been meditating alongside her but had quit when she'd began floating, all that spiritual biz was her forte. He was perfectly content to sit next to her and enjoy the soft breeze. The grass beneath him rustled softly, tickling his legs with each movement of the wind. It was a perfect, serene moment. Finn couldn't remember the last time he'd felt this peaceful. That peace was soon broken by a buzz.
Soft at first the buzzing grew louder, circling his head as he looked around to find the source. It was a small red dot, no bigger than a pebble and it was now headed toward Huntress Wizard. It flew upward, making a beeline to her face before swerving quickly and circling around her head a few times. Finn saw the concentration on her face begin to falter, at first her eye began to twitch, then her mouth bent into a frown, finally she let out a large groan. "What is this thing's deal," she said frustratedly, falling into the grass beside Finn with a thump.
"This fly guy wants to bother us I guess," answered Finn.
"Mission successful," muttered Huntress Wizard, squinting her eyes to spot the winged disrupter. "There," she said, as she threw her hand forward and plucked the bug out the air. She then opened her fist to examine it.
She wouldn't kill it, Finn knew this. She was the sworn protector of this forest and only killed when necessity called. It was one of the things Finn loved about her.
"This shouldn't be here," said Huntress Wizard, eying the creature.
"No kidding, Hun. it made you fall right out the sky."
"No, I mean this doesn't belong in this forest. This is a Nettled Dragonfly. They live in the Great Southern Swamp. If this stays here it'll, gunk up the entire food chain."
"Just one can do all that?"
"They're tough bugs Finn," she said as she stood, walking over to her nearby tree home. Finn followed.
"So what're we gonna use to send it back? Magical forest tube? Gonna hypnotize it with some sweet flute melodies so it never returns?"
Huntress walked into her home and pulled a small glass jar out of her cabinet, "Jar."
"That works too," said Finn, a little embarrassed by his assumptions. He still didn't fully understand all of Huntress' magic but he was eager to find out more.
Huntress placed the dragonfly into the jar and crouched down, "Let's get going."
"Right now?," asked Finn holding onto her back.
"If we wanna come back in time for the show we should leave now."
Huntress had finally agreed to go to one of Marceline's performances with him and he was excited to introduce her to some of the things he liked to do. She, meanwhile, was wary of the city ritual of planned music performances but wanted to understand Finn more.
And so they rushed off to The Great Southern Swamp, Finn wrapping his legs tightly around her waist. Below them the grasslands whizzed by in a green blur as Huntress asked Finn, "Are you familiar with the Great Swamp?"
"Nope, me and Jake never had any reason to go. Not much adventuring to do in a swamp, mostly just creepy crawlies."
"That's fair," said Huntress, "Sometimes I go to hang out with some friends of mine."
"Wizards?" asked Finn, wondering if any wizards had made a home for themselves in the damp swamp.
"Nope. Frogs mostly, a few alligators too but they have a weird passive aggressive energy sometimes. So usually just frogs."
Finn was going to ask what passive aggressive gator energy was like but they'd reached the edge of the swamp and Huntress had landed. "Alright," she said, "We'll walk from here on out, be on the lookout for any groups of dragonflies flying around I wanna leave this guy in good hands."
Finn nodded his head and stepped into the slushy swamp. The consistency of it sent shivers up Finn's spine as he tried to follow Huntress Wizard, she was walking as gracefully as ever. This was probably her magical skills at work, Finn decided.
Willow branches drooped all around them obscuring the path ahead of and Huntress Wizard walked right through. "Found them," she called to Finn as he struggled forward. On the other side of the leafy curtain buzzed a congregation of hundreds of small small dragonflies dancing in intricate circles. They bore a dozen shades: emerald green, ruby red, deep magenta. Huntress stood in awe watching them, "Aren't they beautiful Finn?"
"Sure Hun," he said, though he wasn't paying any mind to the bugs. He was instead looking at Huntress Wizard, her leafy mane was covered in the willow trees long drooping leaves. "I think you've got some leaves caught in your hair," said Finn.
"I always have leaves in my hair, Finn," she said unscrewing the top of the jar and letting her dragonfly join it's kind.
"Not like these. I think the willow branches got all tangled up in your leaves."
Huntress raised a hand to her hair and felt a long chain of willow leaves, "Finn this is my hair. It just changed is all." She had forgotten this would happen and felt a pang of embarrassment, she hoped Finn wouldn't get freaked out by it.
Finn watched in awe as more chains of willow leaves formed and her antlers morphed, taking the form of long willow branches drooping away from one another.
"My magic adapts my appearance to match the surrounding plant life, you know for camouflage and natural magical energies and stuff."
Finn nodded his head, "It's beautiful."
This caused Huntress Wizard to blush, "Well- uh enjoy it while it lasts. It'll turn back after we go back home, now come on or we'll be late to your friend's musical performance ritual."
That night they watched Marceline perform live at the Gumbaldia Stadium. Afterwards they went backstage to greet Marceline, when the vampire saw them she hugged them both and said to Huntress, "Your hair looks amazing tonight."
Huntress thanked her and moved her hand up to stroke the wispy willow leaves but found her hair had already reverted back to normal.
"Doesn't she?" agreed Finn, looking at Huntress with the same admiration and amazement as he had that afternoon when her hair had first morphed. She felt a rush of joy knowing that no matter how her magic morphed her, Finn loved her all the same.
