Nora, who was never fussy, wouldn't stop crying after her nighttime feeds. Both Elliot and Olivia took turns holding and rocking their miserable daughter, trying to comfort her.

"Poor baby, what's wrong?" Liv murmured, rubbing Nora's back and gently rocking her. Nora nestled into Liv's chest but kept crying. "I hope she isn't sick," she said worriedly to Elliot. "She doesn't have a temperature but this is so unlike her." Nora finally fell asleep in Liv's arms, and they carefully moved her to her crib, then fell into bed, exhausted.

Both Liv and Elliot were woken up abruptly in the morning by Nora sobbing. "What's wrong, Nora?" Liv asked soothingly as she went to pick her up.

"El, she's burning up!" Liv exclaimed. Elliot quickly got the thermometer. Liv held their sobbing daughter on the changing table, while Elliot gently inserted the thermometer.

"It's 105.1," Elliot said, worriedly. "I'm going to call the pediatrician's office."

"Poor baby," Liv murmured in a soothing voice. Liv tried to nurse Nora, but Nora only wanted to be held. She normally loved being held by both of her parents, but she clung to Liv when Elliot tried to pick her up. "It's okay, Nora. You need your Mommy," Elliot said gently to his miserable daughter. "Mommy's got you, sweetie."

Both Elliot and Nora watched the clock as they waited for the on-call pediatrician to call back.

Elliot who was already holding his phone, waiting, answered immediately.

"She told me the dose of Tylenol to give her. I'll go measure it out," Elliot told Liv after hanging up.

He came back a minute later with the liquid measured out in a syringe. He squirted the medicine into Nora's mouth as Liv held her. Nora seemed surprised but swallowed the medicine, to their relief.

"They want to see her this morning," Elliot told Liv. "They open at 8:30 and can get her in at 9:30. The doctor said to page back in thirty minutes if her fever hasn't gone down at least one degree."

Liv kept rocking Nora, whose sobbing slowly decreased to whimpering. Liv tried nursing again and was relieved when Nora drank milk this time, even though she stopped nursing more quickly than normal. When they checked her temperature again, it had gone down to 103 degrees. "Thank God," Liv exclaimed.

An hour later, they were at the pediatrician's office. Nora's fever had gone down to 101 degrees but she still seemed miserable. The pediatrician listened to Nora's lungs, assuring Liv and Elliot that they were clear, then looked in her ears. "Her right ear is infected," the pediatrician told them. She checked Nora's throat, gently felt her abdomen and finished examining her. "Everything but her ear looked fine. If she was under 12 weeks, she'd need a more extensive work-up but because she's a little over 13 weeks, there is a clear reason for her fever, and her temperature went down quickly with medication, it's not necessary."

Nora whimpered as Liv put her in her car-seat. "I know, sweetie. I know you don't feel well. We're going to get medicine that will help you feel so much better," Liv said soothingly.

"I'll drive you home first, then go pick up her medication," Elliot said.

He helped get Liv and Nora settled, then left and returned with the antibiotic. Nora took the medication, then opened her mouth for more. Liv and Elliot laughed gently. "Did you like your medicine, Nora?" Elliot asked her. "I'm glad it didn't taste bad." Nora fell asleep, nursing, exhausted.

"Do you need to go to work?" Liv asked Elliot. "No, it's not busy and they told me to take the whole day off. Why don't you nap while she sleeps? You've been holding her for hours."

"I think I should pump first," Liv said. "I'm worried because she isn't eating as much, I could get mastitis again."

"That's a good idea," Elliot responded. He sat sat with her while she pumped. "You go to sleep," he told her, as soon as she finished. "I'll freeze the milk and clean the pumping equipment."

"Thanks," Liv responded, yawning.

Both Liv and Nora napped for almost three hours. When Nora woke up, her fever was up again, but only to 102 this time, to Elliot and Liv's relief. Elliot checked his watch. "She can have another dose of Tylenol. I'll go get it." They gave her the medication, Liv nursed her, and they spent the rest of the day holding Nora, who wasn't clinging to Liv anymore.

"Poor Nora," Elliot said, holding her. "I know your ear hurts and you feel rotten. Your medicine should help you feel better so soon."

By that night, she still seemed tired and not herself, but her fever was down and she was able to nurse more. "I hope you're starting to feel better, owlet," Liv said, comfortingly as nursed her. Elliot rocked their exhausted daughter, singing soft lullabies as she sucked her thumb.

Nora fell asleep immediately. "Let me massage your back and shoulders quickly," Elliot suggested to Liv. "You've been holding her most of the day. Your muscles must be so tense."

"Thank you," Liv told Elliot, as her muscles started to relax. "It was so scary this morning when her fever was so high. It's such a relief that she seems like she's starting to feel a little better."

"Hopefully she'll wake up feeling a lot better, after a full day of antibiotics," Elliot responded.

Exhausted, Liv and Elliot ate dinner and went to sleep.
