Magnhild stayed as close to Temple's warm scales as possible, even with the blanket she had been giving, her body was still shaking and the warmth of Temple's heat was helping to stop the shivering. They were on their way to the island's west side so Magnhild could really get warm. They flew above the clouds to not be seen by Grimmels soldiers and got shot by arrows.
Magnhild had left Barviks ship after arguing with her brothers about going with them, because she may be cold and be in pain but she could still fight. Stoick and Finn had had the final word in the end and now she was on her way to the island and it was Finn's time to argue with Stoick about his wound.
Temple flew down from the clouds and Magnhild could now see the opening into the mountain on the west side. He landed inside and the battle sounds were replaced by low sounds of people in pain. People hissing, groaning and swearing.
Magnhild didn't want to see this. People were in pain and this was Berk. People she knew. But she had to move forward and get out this open entrance of cold wind.
"Come on." she said to Temple and pulled the blanket closer to herself. Temple stayed close behind her to give her his heat.
The sound of pain became higher and Magnhild wondered if the west room was so packed that they now had people in the corridor?
She got her answer when she saw people sitting by the walls. They were all wounded, except for the two healers that helped the injured men and women.
"I'm sorry, Magnhild." a healer came up to her. The healer looked like she had been on the battlefield. Her hair was out of the upto, her hands and clothes were bloody and she was out of breath. "But no dragons are allowed in these rooms. There's no place for them and we need every space we can get."
Magnhild nodded slowly and the healer walked fast away to help a wounded man. Magnhild turned to Temple. "Sorry, Temple, but I guess we have to find another place to get me warm."
Temple shook his head and shoved his rider forward.
"Temple." Magnhild said and succeeded to keep her on her feet. "What are you-"
"He tells you to stay." Magnhild turned her attention to the voice, which she recognized. "And he's right, you know. You're freezing under that blanket." Heather laid a few meters from where Magnhild stood. Having her arm wrapped up and her leg in a high position.
"Heather, are you okay?" Magnhild asked and walked to her.
"Yeah," she answered and smiled a little. "Just an idiot who cut my arm open and then I fell down some stairs. Luckily Windshear was in time to get me out of that ship and bring me here. How are you doing?"
Magnhild was about to answer when she once again was pushed by Temple. "Seriously?" She complained and didn't have time to tell her dragon that she would not leave him, when he flew away from her.
"Seriously?" she said again and shook her head slowly. She couldn't believe her dragon. Magnhild would happily be outside in the cold if that meant she would be with Temple, but Temple knew she would be warmer inside where the cold air couldn't get to her.
Magnhild sighed.
"Did you see Thora or Brant out there?" Heather asked and Magnhild furrowed her brow in thought.
"Uh… no sorry. But me and Temple flew over the clouds to get here, so I didn't see what was going on down there." she began and quickly added: "But I'm sure they're fine. If they are not here, then they're definitely still fighting out there."
"Yeah, you're probably right." she said but did not sound convinced.
Magnhild bit her lip and looked around her. Looking for anyone in her family or her friends, but Heather was the only one here who she was close with. "Have you seen my mum?" Magnhild asked, putting Heather out of her thoughts.
"Yeah, I saw her fighting right outside the middle entrance when I got in here." Heather answered.
Magnhild looked to her left, to the way the middle entrance was. She then took off her blanket and gave it to Heather. "Here, take this. Get warm and heal."
Heather grabbed her arm instead of the blanket and stared at her with wide eyes. "You are not going out there in your condition."
Magnhild shook her head and felt the pain in her side come back while she stood with her body leaning down to Heather like this. "The more people who are out there fighting, will get us closer to winning this war and end it. I'll continue fighting for everyone who can't anymore and make sure we win, so we all can go home."
The grip on Magnhilds arm loosened and Heather took the blanket and sighed. "You Haddocks are really stubborn."
Magnhild smiled a bit and shrugged. "It's an occupational hazard." She let the blanket go and walked out of the corridor, through the west room, through another corridor until the main room was in the view and she went right to go out and find her mother.
The view she was greeted with was Berkians and Grimmels men fighting each other. Swords and axes were raised and clashed together. People fell to the ground to either stand up again or never stand again. What made Magnhild feel happy, was the number of Berkians who were winning and how many more there were of them instead of Grimmels men.
Magnhild scanned the area for her mother. She didn't spot her so she started walking along the mountain wall to her left to try to look for her.
While she walked along the wall, her eyes looked at the battle for incoming fighters. But the Berkians seemed to have everything under control. A Berkian even slammed one of Grimmels men right into the mountain wall where she had just been seconds ago. Magnhild looked wided eyes in surprise at the two men, but they didn't care about her, they had a fight to win.
She saw someone come running at her with a sword raised, ready to strike her down but Magnhild took the sword from her back. The last sword she had as the first one was lost in the sea from when Stoick grabbed her and pulled her into the water. This sword was for her left hand, no problem for someone who was left handed.
Magnhild blocket the blow and she felt his weight come crashing down on her. She pushed back until both of them couldn't push any longer and backed. Magnhild took the second as they withdrew and crouched down. Her sword sliced his leg and he fell down on his knees. Dropping his sword in surprise.
A down man is a dead man.
Magnhild stood up and saw the man hiss in pain. His neck veins were popping under his skin and he was furious. "You little-"
"Yeah." she finished and sliced his neck.
She didn't stay around and look at the man she just killed. She continued walking alongside the mountain wall while scanning after her mother.
Soon she spotted the blue armored woman.
"Mum!"
Astrid finished the man she was fighting and turned around to her daughter. Her hair was loose from the braid she had had and sweat and blood covered her face. Her armor wasn't just blue or yellow anymore, blood stains were here and there, but she looked unharmed.
"Magnhild!" Astrid exclaimed. "You okay?"
That made Magnhild think about how she herself looked like. She knew her clothes weren't destroyed. Sweat and bloody and now dampt from the little cold bath she had. Her face was probably red from the cold air and she felt her braid down her back and it was probably a mess by now.
Astrid didn't have time to hear an answer as she was attacked again. Magnhild saw it and ran to help her.
Mother and daughter fought side by side for a while. Astrid with her axe and Magnhild with her sword.
"Seriously." Magnhild said between her teeth and started to feel her body aching of pain. "I thought we had the-" she got hit in the face and she stumbled backwards and her hand flew up to the hitten cheek.
Astrid cut the man, who hit Magnhild with his axe handle and checked her daughter after.
"You okay?" she asked and inspected Magnhild's cheeks. "Anything broken?" She gently took Magnhilds hand away from her cheek. The cheek was red and a bruise was probably on its way.
Magnhild shook her head and frowned. "No, nothing's broken." she said and felt with her tongue if any teeth were gone, luckily all of her teeth seemed to be there.
Astrid looked around her to see if anyone was coming at them and then she looked up to the mountain and saw two men standing there with a bow draw, aimed at Magnhild.
In a second, Astrid saw the arrows become loose and she knew they would hit Magnhild. There was no way an arrow would hit her child.
"No." she whispered and grabbed Magnhild in a hug to protect her and dragged her down to the ground.
Magnhild was so surprised by the sudden embrace she slipped on the ice and had no idea why her mother had grabbed her or why they were falling to the ground. She felt her mother's hand on the back of her head and her mothers other hand on her back.
It felt like forever before they hit the ground and she closed her eyes when she felt it collided with her body.
Magnhild felt even more cold when she laid there on the snowy and icy ground. The only warmth was from her mother, who still held her by the waist and head.
She opened her eyes and saw her mother's face. Eyes closed, mouth slightly parted and her cheeks red. Magnhild could feel that she was breathing, so why wasn't she opening her eyes?
"Mum?" Magnhild asked and got interrupted by a nadder firing high on the mountain. Two men were burned alive by Stormfly.
Magnhild frowned at the sight. How did Grimmels men come up there?
She tried to sit up and saw her mother's hand that had been under her head. It was blue and looked broken. Magnhild moved her eyes over her mother's body and saw a stick standing behind her back.
Magnhild frowned and looked at why there was a stick- she gasped. An arrow was stuck in her armor in her lower back on the right side. She didn't know if it had pierced her mother's skin, she hoped it hadn't.
Magnhild finished scanning the body and saw an arrow lying by their feet. Two arrows had been shot and that's why her mother had dragged her down to the ground, so they wouldn't get hit. Unfortunately they had gotten her mother.
Stormfly came flying down at them and she nudged her unconscious rider. Trying to wake her up.
"Mum." Magnhild said and shaked her gently. "Mum, wake up."
Nothing. She was still breathing so that meant that she wasn't dead. That was good. What wasn't good was her broken hand or the arrow that could be pierced threw her skin and caused more injuries than she already had.
"Take her in, Stormfly." Magnhild said to the dragon who still tried to wake Astrid up. "Take her into the mountains and make sure she gets help."
Right now she didn't care if they didn't want a dragon in there. Her mother, their chieftainess was injured and unconscious and Magnhild had no idea how serious that arrow wound was.
Stormfly cooed sadly and looked at her. "Take her. I'll be fine." she tried to smile, which made her remember the pain in her cheek. Her body felt weak and now she felt her eyes start to tear up. "Take her."
The nadder obayed and flew off with Astrid in her claws.
Magnhild watched them until they disappeared into the mountain and Magnhild let out a breath.
The battle before her was still going. It seemed like no one had seen them falling down. Their focus was still on winning this war and Magnhild wanted to help, but her body said no.
It felt like a weight had come crashing down on her and now all she wanted to do was lay down and cry. Even if some part of her told her to continue fighting, her legs wouldn't stand up. The sound around her started to fade out and she felt herself crawl backwards until her back hit the mountain wall.
She was cold, her breathing began to become heavy, tears came streaming down her cheeks and her vision became blurry until the people before her disappeared along with the sounds of people shouting and weapons striking at each other.
