Toothless glowed blue as he growled and stood battle ready beside Hiccup. His eyes were locked at the man lying two meters from them. Grimmel laid in the snow, he tried to keep himself up but his legs were black and red from the explosion. He couldn't stand and it made him so annoyed that he didn't care about the pain that streamed through his whole body.
Hiccup stood with his back straight and his face was serious. His eyes were locked at Grimmel.
"You," Grimmel began and pushed himself up with his arms. "Will not win." he fell down and groaned.
The deathgripper who had flown Grimmel off the ship to this island, looked at him and Grimmel grabbed the dragons back to hold himself up.
"Will we win when you surrender or when your army is gone?" Hiccup asked and watched the man struggle.
Grimmel laughed. "I will never surrender and my army will kill everyone of you before they-" he hissed when a wave of pain came over him. His hands grabbed tighter on the dragon and Grimmel got a grip on the dragon's skin. The dragon rumbled sadly when he felt the human drag himself up with the help of his skin.
Toothless took a step forward when he saw that. The dragon might be on the wrong side of the battle but it was still a dragon and it was in pain. Being dragged by the skin was not acceptable.
A nadders squak was heard and Grimmel grinned amused when he saw who it was.
"The traitor queen." he said and watched Vylma jump down from the nadder and come walking up to them. He then turned to Hiccup. "Did you know your daughter over here cut a night's fury open and gave its heart to me? Just so she could gain my trust. What a way to get something we want just so we can protect people."
Vylma raised an eyebrow at him. "Do you think you are any better? You brought this war on us, just because you want something you can't have. For what? Because a night fury killed your dad?"
"They cause nothing but destruction." Grimmel growled. "And this war could have been stopped if your father had handed over his night fury."
"No." Hiccup began and frowned. "You started it by taking no for an answer. Do you really think I would hand over my best friend? You know, all of this talk about you hating dragons because they cause death and Vylma cutting out a night fury's heart got me thinking. I almost cut the heart out of Toothless back when I shot him down and yes if I had; my father would likely still be alive and I wouldn't have become chief at a such young age and I would be liked by Berk rather than being disowned by my own father and I still would have my left leg whole. But I wouldn't have Toothless by my side and explore the world. I definitely would not have found my mother and seen my family whole after 20 years. But I don't regret what happened back when I shot down Toothless and spared his life and he spared mine."
Grimmel sneered and made a grimach. "Not killing that night fury will be your biggest mistake in your life!" His breath became heavy and he started to shake. "Look at the damage your decision has caused. People and dragons died because of your precious bond with that dragon."
Vylma took in what he said and looked out to the sea of ships. A relaxation hit her with the view. Dragons flying everywhere to take down the ships and people sitting on dragons back, fighting on the ships or on land. Everyone here was at risk. They could die any second in this war. What made Vylma smile was the lack of Grimmels ships and how many of Barviks ships were still floating.
"You will regret starting this war," Vylma said and turned her attention to Grimmel. "You see: your army is falling, while Berk and Barvik are standing. Six of my 13 ships are still standing, while you have four left."
Grimmel snapped his head to the sea behind him. Seeing for himself if she were telling the truth. Which she was. He was losing. His ships were down to four and how many soldiers were left? He didn't know. And where were the rest of his deathgrippers?
"Vylma Hadderson," he said and turned his flushed face to her. "You are a queen who rules with an iron fist."
"Do you want me to rule with a wooden fist, so I can easily burn?" she sassed.
Grimmel's breath became uneven and he started to shake more. He wanted to lay down, but he didn't want to be on a lower level than the two people before him. "The first thing I will do when I've won is kill your precious night fury right in front of you," he told Hiccup, who clenched his fits and his jaw. "Then I'll kill your children and people. But you I'll spare for last so you can-"
The dagger sliced Grimmels throat and blood came streaming out. Hiccup's face was stone and his eyes filled with rage. His right hand was covered in Grimmels blood and he held the bloody dagger tight in his hand.
Vylma gasped. She hadn't seen the dagger in her fathers hand as he walked toward Grimmel. Seeing him killing Grimmel came as a surprise.
Grimmel fell down. The snow around him turned red and the dragon beside him took a step to the side, surprised by the sudden act.
Toothless turned to the deathgripper and told him to stay. The deathgripper obayed, but was unsure of what would happen to him.
"Dad." Vylma whispered.
Hiccup let the dagger fall from his hand. His face relaxed as he took in what he had done. He looked down at his hands, one bloody and one clean.
"Dad." Vylma said again and he turned to her. "You okay?" she asked, concerned.
Hiccup opened his mouth to say something but nothing came out. His mind was blank and he just stared. Toothless came up to him, the glowing and growling was gone and he nudged Hiccup gently. Hiccup looked at him and laid a clean hand on his head. "We won," he muttered.
Vylma looked from Grimmels dead body to the battle that was still going. "Let's tell them that."
