Three weeks later the endless wait finally came to an end when Astrid opened her eyes.
Hiccup couldn't believe his eyes when he saw his wife's blue eyes again. Weeks of waiting and endless hours of hoping to see her awake again, was ending and Hiccup smiled brighter than he had done for weeks.
It was in the middle of the night when he laid awake watching over her when her eyes fluttered open and a smile came onto his features. "Astrid?" Hiccup watched with wide eyes while his wife woke up.
"Hiccup?" Astrid said with a hoarse voice, "What-" she coughed and sat up. Hiccup quickly laid a hand on her back and felt her body struggling to sit up.
Astrid feel backwards and Hiccup stopped her from falling hard against the bed. "Everything is fine," he whispered and laid his hand on her cheek when she was laid back down, "How do you feel?"
Astrid groaned and frowned, "Like Stormfly has been sitting on me for weeks and I'm really thirsty and hungry."
"Right." Hiccup nodded and was up to his feet. He walked out of the room, but turned back at the door opening. "Don't go to sleep okay? I'll get you some water and food. I'll be right back."
"Okay." she said and Hiccup had a hard time believing she would not go to sleep with that sleeping voice of hers.
Hiccup almost stumbled down the stairs in a hurry and missed his two kids sitting by the fire.
"Is she awake?" Finn asked and Hiccup snapped his head towards him.
"Yes-"
"I'll get Gothi." Finn said and ran out of the house. Magnhild didn't even think twice about running up to her mother.
"Mum?" Magnhild said when she entered the room. The room was only lit with two candles, but Magnhild could easily see her mother move under the blankets.
Magnhild couldn't help the tears or the smile coming as she walked to Astrid's bed side. She fell to her knees and grabbed her mother's hand. "Mum."
Astrid looked at Magnhild with a smile until she saw her daughter's teary eyes and frowned. "Why are you crying?" she asked gently and freed her hand from Magnhild's grib to wipe her tears away.
"You've been gone... way too long." Magnhild sniffed.
"How long?" Astrid asked and tried to sit up.
Magnhild was fast to support her. "Maybe you shouldn't be sitting."
"I'm fine."
"Say's the one who has been unconscious for four weeks." Magnhild said and raised an eyebrow.
Astrid fell back a little and frowned. "What?" she puzzled. "Four weeks?"
Magnhild nodded and tried to lay her mother back down to bed. Magnhild could feel her mother's body shaking from trying to keep itself upwards. "Yes, and you need to rest-"
"Did we win? Is Grimmel defeated?" Astrid asked and tried to keep herself sitting, but knew it was a lost fight when the room started to spin before her eyes and her right hand suddenly hurt and she felt the pain come running up her arm.
"Yes, we won and Grimmel is dead."
"Good." Astrid nodded and let Magnhild lower her to the bed. "Where's Finn and Stoick?"
MAgnhild fixed the fur blankets before sitting down on the bed beside her mother. "Finn's getting Gothi so she can check on you and Stoick... he's with Ingrid."
Astrid frowned. "Did something happen to Ingrid or..."
"You can say that." Magnhild mumbled and was saved by Hiccup to go any further of that horrible news Astrid would eventually hear about.
"Here," he placed the tray on the bedside table, "Water and warm fish soup."
"Thanks." Astrid said and tried to smile but it came more like a grimash.
The front door opened and closed in a hurry and Finn almost lifted Gothi from the ground so it would be faster to get up the stairs than in the slow pace she was going.
The old woman became quick on her feet when she walked over to Astrid and gestured to everyone to leave the room.
Hiccup began to protest about leaving his wife, so Finn almost had to drag Hiccup out of the room.
The trio waited for Gothi to be done with the checking of Astrid outside the closed door.
"She's finally awake." Finn said and leaned against the wall.
"Yeah." Magnhild murmured and stared at the closed door. She couldn't get her thoughts out of the image of her mother getting the news about Stoick. "And now we have to tell her. About everything." She whispered.
"I'll tell her." Hiccup said.
Magnhild gave him a nod. It was for the best. Finn could barely say Stoick's name without looking away and going quiet and Magnhild did not want to tell her mother about her dead son. Hiccup wasn't stable either, but if Astrid would hear about the death of her son it would be from her husband.
The sound of a nadder was heard and Finn turned around as the sound came on the other side of the wall where the stable was one floor below.
"Sounds like someone else knows she's awake." Finn smiled lightly.
Stormfly roared and wings were heard flying outside the wall, then a low rumble from the alpha was heard and Stormfly landed.
40 minutes later, Gothi came out and told the trio that Astrid was doing well and she had eaten and now she was asleep. Gothi didn't know when Astrid was waking up but she wouldn't be asleep for longer than a day and if she was asleep after a day, Gothi didn't know if Astrid would ever wake up again.
