Tyra let Magnhild start training with a sword two days after Magnhild and Vivian came home with the saddle. Magnhild's wounds had healed fine and she was happily destroying trees as soon Tyra told her it was okay for her to swing a sword, but if she felt sharp pain she would come to Tyra immediately to get it checked out. Magnhild had agreed and now she had destroyed three trees in the woods.
Sweat was running down her face and her arms felt tired after 30 minutes of hard training. She cursed herself for being so out of shape. She had lasted in wars for hours and here she was; feeling tired from a training session she could have easily done months ago.
Magnhild swung the sword right in the side of the tree, making the sword get stuck there. She let the handle go and took two steps back breathing heavily. Sweat was drowning her purple tunic Vivian had bought for her when she realized riding a dragon in a dress wasn't convenient. Magnhild had been glad for the clothes she had been giving and was now drowning them in sweat.
She unhooked the brown belt from her waist and took off the tunic, leaving her in her brown legging, boots and bindings. She didn't care who saw her. The woods were enough shelter and Tyra, Vivian and Disa were the only ones who were on the island. Oddvar was in Birka working in the shoe shop.
The scars she had on her body had already been seen by Tyra and Vivian so it's story was mostly told. A story about her being tortured and being in a few fights and wars.
And the tattoos on her upper arms had been told as well. Tattoos she had gotten three years ago. On her left arms was a night fury; Toothless spreading his wings wide with the chief symbol on his back representing her father chief Hiccup. On her right arm was a nadder; Stormfly spreading her wings wide with an axe on her back representing her mother chiftness Astrid .
She had been thinking of getting a tattoo to represent her siblings but never really been happy with the things she could represent them with.
A monstrous nightmare for Stoick, a changewing for Finn and a nadder for Vylma? Naw, she didn't want two nadders on her. A crown for Vylma, a hammer for Stoick and a bow for Finn? Or just their names? No, that would be weird.
Years later and she still didn't know. Now she wanted a tattoo for Temple, but that means that she would have two nadders on her body.
Magnhild didn't know what her parents would say if they saw the tattoos. Will they like them? Or will they be angry? She had been on her own for eight years and she was old enough to do as she pleased. It wasn't like tattoos were a bad thing and this hadn't been the worst disrespectful thing she had done in these eight years of being gone from home.
Tyra, Vivian and Disa had asked about the tattoos and hadn't commented on them since. They didn't hate them. Magnhild was old enough to do whatever with her life after all.
Sun came flying down from the sky and landed behind Magnhild. She turned and smiled.
"Like the saddle?" Sun looked over her shoulder to the saddle that was strapped on her back. "It's not the best color, but I can make another one in white in the future."
Magnhild stroked Sun's head and looked up to the sky.
They hadn't tested the saddle yet. Magnhild had let Sun get used to having it on her back, but she needed to start getting used to having a human on her back as well.
The sky looked tempting blue and Magnhild bit her lip. She knew the fastest way home was dragon back. Going by boat could take months and she didn't feel like being trapped on a boat. Flying was in her blood. Growing up in the sky had always been something she was thankful for. But now Temple was gone and she never thought she would be flying again. Now she had Sun and gods would it be nice to feel free again.
"What do you say?" Sun tilted her head. "Are you ready to fly with me?" Sun rumbled with a smile. Magnhild put her tunic and belt back on before she sat herself on the saddle.
Sitting on the dragon's back again felt amazing. The sky came closer and closer towards Magnhild and all she could do was smile. This was life.
Sun hit her wings fast and Magnhild laughed. Her braid flew behind her and it felt good to feel the chilly air on her sweaty body.
They flew through the clouds and dived back down right until they hit the tree tops. Magnhild felt a familiar good rush going through her. Sun was fast. Faster than Temple ever was. Now Magnhild felt like she rode Toothless, which she had done a few times in her life but always said that she preferred a nadders back. She still did. Sitting on a light fury's back was not like sitting on a nadders back, but it could also be the familiar and knowing where to go she had with Temple and this being the first time flying on Sun.
Sun flew on her own if Magnhild didn't give her directions where to go. With Temple it was like he and Magnhild had the same brain and both knew what to do and where to go. She didn't feel that connection with Sun. Well not yet anyway.
The good rush was from the feeling of freedom. Magnhild loved the fast speed Sun had, she couldn't complain. But she wasn't in the Temple. She could never be him.
And maybe it was time for Magnhild to let Temple go and let Sun become her new best dragon friend.
2 weeks later
"Are you sure you have everything?" Tyra asked for the second time.
Magnhild nodded. "Yes. I've packed the food, water and the extra clothes. Thank you by the way for giving it to me."
"We're family. That's the least I can do."
"And if I wasn't family?" Magnhild challenged with a raised eyebrow.
"Then she would have given you the supplies either way." Disa commented.
The sun was soon going to rise over the trees and Magnhild, Tyra and Disa stood in front of the wooden house to say farewell. Vivian and Oddvar had said their goodbyes yesterday night after they had thrown a small feast for Magnhild before Vivian and her father went home to their house in Birka.
"I probably would but," Tyra took a step forward to Magnhild. "I'm sorry for what you've been through, but I'm glad you're alive and going back home. I bet your family misses you dearly."
Magnhild smiled and hugged her. "Thank you for taking care of me and giving me the help I needed to recover." she let her go and took a step back to Sun. "But now I need to get home to Berk and see what has happened in the past eight years."
"Say hi to my niece for me will you." Disa started and walked over to her to give her a hug. Magnhild hugged the old lady back. "And tell her I'm happy for her for having a good life and that I'm sorry for the loss of her parents. I still wish that Harold could have known about Vivian but there's nothing to be done now." she whispered to Magnhild so Vivian didn't hear.
"Thank you and I'm sorry as well." Magnhild whispered back to Disa before letting her go.
Magnhild mounted Sun and sighed. "Thank you again and I promise I will be back someday. Maybe even with a few family members."
Tyra chortle. "I'm looking forward to it."
With a last nod, Sun and Magnhild rose from the ground up to the orange sky as the sun began to rise.
