Chapter 20

Once they returned home, Koga had left and went to his place. He would visit Kagome tomorrow once she rested. Miroku had looked over Kagome, as InuYasha's watchful eyes made sure his fingers remained off her body. They had cleaned her the best they could without exposing her. Now it was just a matter of waiting till she woke.

Miroku had taken a seat in his normal chair, while InuYasha sat on the sofa. He was holding the Tessiaga and admiring the blade. "Your father would be proud. You used his sword perfectly and without ever practicing." InuYasha didn't respond to Miroku though. He simply turned the blade over and looked it over once more. Miroku cleared his throat and tried again. "How long do you think it will take Naraku to regenerate a new body?"

InuYasha stood and laid the Tessiaga on the stand by the sofa. "Don't know and I really don't care. Hopefully the jewel will be gone till he reappears."

Miroku watched as InuYasha started walking towards the room Kagome was resting in. Things had happened quickly, with the appearance of the Tessiaga. And his youkai side no longer taking over whenever it pleased. And above all of them was Kagome. What would the outcome be once she wakes up?

As InuYasha walked his mind kept thinking. How was it that when he asked his youkai side to take over, a black pearl appeared instead? The fact that he knew how to use his father's sword was no surprise. After all you don't grow up watching someone train and fight with a sword and not know how it works. However there was the question of his youkai side. 'How is it that on the night my youkai blood was the strongest, it disappears and my father's sword appears?'

Still the important thing was Kagome was safe, and maybe even more so than before. 'Could it be that now that I have the sword my youkai blood has lost its power over me? No, how can that be? It was inside me all along, just because I'm holding the sword doesn't change that.' His thoughts stopped when he got to the door. His ear twitched as he listened. The soft sound of her breathing and the slight scent of lavender, had InuYasha smiling.

Still there was the jewel that could take her away from him, and the sadness returned to his face. "You know it doesn't help keeping things in." InuYasha didn't respond to Miroku's words though. "Well either way InuYasha I know what you're thinking. And I think you should be by her side right now."

InuYasha slightly growled, while clenching his fist. He wanted to be with her and yet…. "No Miroku, you don't fucking get it and you don't know! You humans throw the word love around like it's nothing. I care for her and want to save her, but I don't love her. I promised to protect her and that's all I'm doing!"

Miroku shook his head, he knew the truth and yet InuYasha continued to deny it. "Well I see you're living up to your usual stubbornness. Till me this though InuYasha, why is it every time you hear Kagome's name you seem miserable. Why is it every time me or Koga went out with her you pouted and followed us?"

InuYasha was silent, he knew Miroku's words were true. Still he refused to allow himself to love again. Over the years he learned it wasn't worth it. Love was just a curse to him and it always would be. There was nothing more to say on the matter. So he headed to his own room. InuYasha knew Kagome was safe and that was all that mattered for now.

Miroku however decided to give Kagome some company. Quietly he entered the room and made his way to the end of the end. He sat down slowly so he wouldn't wake her. He smiled as he looked at her sleeping figure.

As he watched her, Miroku started thinking about everything from the past. 'Well Miroku old boy, it looks like you have your work cut out for you. Nothing like dealing with a love sick hanyou, that's too hard headed to admit his feelings. I really am sorry about all of the hell you've been through over these last few year, Kagome.'

Miroku sighed heavily as he continued to think. 'First you lost your father in the fire, started having nightmares of that horrible night. You tried so hard to get past everything bad that has happened to you only to have it all come back to you.' Miroku pulled the death sutra from his pocket and chringed. 'It would be so easy to end all of this, but I promised Toga I would try and save InuYasha. I feel like now I have more of a reason to save his life now, mostly for your happiness Kagome.'

As Kagome rested far away the enemy was slowly regenerating his destroyed body. It would take at least a week till he would be able to move, but once he was mobile again. "Damn them, damn them all to hell! I will not be defeated so easily. I will take what is mine from that woman and show no mercy to anyone."

A woman's shadow emerged from the darkness. Her hair was tied up in a messy bun with two feathers. She wore a greenish kimono and was carrying a fan in her right hand. "Everything is in order Naraku, Kanna will be here soon with the body you requested."

Naraku grinned and gave a hard laugh. "Very good Kagura, you know the rest of the plan? After all I would hate to have to repeat myself."

Kagura bowed and replied. "Yes Naraku, I have sent for him. It wasn't easy to convince him to come though, I mentioned the Tessiaga and he agreed to come. However he will choose his own time to arrive."

"It matters not as long as he shows up in three days, after that I will do this on my own. Though I doubt he'll fail to show."
