Episode Five

(Having been given a glass of water, the Doctor is now running his finger around the edge. This in turn makes a ringing noise, that is not unlike the ringing of cell door when it unlocks.)

QUINN: Do you have to do that?! I'm afraid you'll find these locks are foolproof.

PRINCESS: Ah, but they've never encountered fools like us, have they, Doctor?

(The Doctor and Princess giggle between themselves.)

QUINN: (Muttering) Oh, just my luck.

DOCTOR: (Thinking aloud) I wonder how they're converting the power?

QUINN: What are you talking about?

DOCTOR: The Daleks. They're powered by static electricity. It's like blood to them, a constant life-stream.

QUINN: Static isn't workable.

DOCTOR: It is to the Daleks. They've conquered static, just as they've conquered anti-magnetics.

QUINN: I'm not going to listen to any more of this nonsense.

PRINCESS: I didn't know you could turn your ears off, Quinn.

(Quinn groans.)

DOCTOR: I don't seem to be able to hit the right note. Quinn?

QUINN: What?

DOCTOR: Do you have any more water?

QUINN: I hope not–! (Realises) No.

DOCTOR: Then I shall have to get some.

(Suddenly, they hear a commotion from the stairs.)

GUARD: You can't!

LESTERSON: But it's important! It's desperately important!

GUARD: Well, Bragen gave orders!

LESTERSON: Just get out of my way!

(Lesterson comes running down the corridor, stopping outside the Doctor and the Princess' cell.)

LESTERSON: Ah! Examiners!

PRINCESS: Lesterson?

LESTERSON: It's the Daleks!

DOCTOR: Yes?

LESTERSON: They're duplicating! I've seen them! They've got their own power now! I can't stop them!

(The guards catch up to Lesterson and restrain him.)

GUARD: Take him to Bragen.

PRINCESS: Wait, Lesterson, what about my hat? Did you find it?

(Lesterson cries madly as the guard takes him away.)

DOCTOR: (To Guard) I say, do you think we might have a little more water?

QUINN: Is that all you can say?! Lesterson fights his way down here to speak to you both and all you can do is ask about hats and water?

PRINCESS: It's an important hat.

(The guard returns with a jug of water.)

GUARD: Get away from the door.

(The Doctor and Princess step back, as the guard unlocks the door, using the same ringing tone as before. The door opens, the guard sets the jug of water down inside the cell, then lets the door close before walking away.)

QUINN: Sorry about that outburst. I thought it might help the situation.

PRINCESS: You mean you were acting this whole time?

QUINN: Only at the end there, after I realised what you were trying to do with the water. Sorry about before.

DOCTOR: Oh, that's all right.

PRINCESS: If you ever feel like giving up on politics, I think you'd make a good actor.

(The Doctor picks up the jug and adds a little more water to the glass. He then runs his finger around the rim again, creating a higher pitch ringing noise that sounds more like the ringing that unlocks the door.)

QUINN: Nearly.

PRINCESS: I've got it.

(The Princess picks up the jug and adds a little more water. The Doctor tries again, getting closer to the right sound.)

QUINN: Nearly.

(The Princess adds some more water. But now when the Doctor tries the tone is too high.)

QUINN: No, go back.

DOCTOR: But what do I do with the water?

PRINCESS: Are you thirsty?

DOCTOR: A little, now I think about it.

PRINCESS: Then have a sip.

(The Doctor nods, before taking the tiniest sip of the water. He then tries once more.)

GUARD: Cut that row out, you lot!

(Right before the Doctor stops though, Quinn's cell door clicks, unlocking. Quinn catches the door though, holding it so it appears closed. The Doctor then gets out his recorder and begins to play. The guard comes up to their cell.)

PRINCESS: Oh, hello.

GUARD: I told you to knock it off!

PRINCESS: But music helps pass the time.

(With the guard distract, Quinn slips out of his cell and comes up behind the guard.)

GUARD: You're not in here to enjoy yourself, you're in here to–

(Quinn hits the Guard on the back and he drops to the floor unconscious. Quinn then unlocks the Doctor and Princess' cell door for them. As the door then opens, Quinn drags the guard into the cell.)

QUINN: Come on.

DOCTOR: Wait a minute.

(The Doctor picks up the glass of water and the jug.)

DOCTOR: We don't want him trying it, although he seemed a bit tone deaf to me.

(Closing the door behind them, the Doctor, Princess and Quinn flee the scene.)

(Later on, the Doctor pokes his head through the door into Lesterson's laboratory. There is no one inside. The Doctor waves for the Princess and Quinn to follow him inside.)

QUINN: (Quietly) We should be finding a way to contact Hensell, not lurking around in here.

DOCTOR: (Quietly) We must know how far the Dalek's plan has advanced since we were captured.

QUINN: Are these things really that dangerous?

DOCTOR: How many times do I have to say, 'Yes,' to that question.

PRINCESS: Ah ha!

QUINN: (Hissing) Quiet!

DOCTOR: What is it, Princess?

PRINCESS: My hat.

(The Princess' hat is on the floor near the capsule door. She is about to get it when suddenly the Doctor pulls her down behind one of the desks. Quinn quickly ducks as well, as Valmar and a Dalek exit the capsule.)

VALMAR: (To Dalek) I'll have to check the cable circuit now. Otherwise it's just as you asked for.

DALEK: Very well.

VALMAR: Why can't you carry on with the power you're drawing from the colony? Why go to all this trouble?

DALEK: Until now, we have had to recharge from the colony supply. With static power, the Daleks will be twice as…useful.

(Janley races into the laboratory, quickly shutting the doors behind her.)

JANLEY: Valmar, quick!

VALMAR: What's the matter?

JANLEY: The Governor's back.

VALMAR: What about the girl?

JANLEY: Leave her.

DALEK: I will follow you.

VALMAR: What for?

DALEK: I am your servant.

JANLEY: Come on.

(Janley, Valmar and the Dalek leave the room. Once the door closes behind him, the Doctor, Princess and Quinn come out of hiding.)

DOCTOR: An electrical circuit of their own supplying static electricity! I wonder how much longer we've got?

QUINN: What do you mean?

DOCTOR: I didn't realise they'd have a circuit of their own. Without need of the colony's, they'll have no further use for any of you. They'll drop the facade and begin mass extermination!

(The Princess goes to pick up her hat, when she hears movement from inside the capsule. She looks up, seeing Kebble holding Polly and covering her mouth inside.)

PRINCESS: Polly!

(Kebble, having been caught, shoves Polly aside and grabs a wrench.)

POLLY: Princess, look out!

(Kebble rushes towards the Princess, swinging the wrench, but the Princess sidesteps out the way and dart past him into the capsule. Kebble turns to follow her, but that gives Quinn the chance to jump him from behind and pull him away from the capsule.)

PRINCESS: Polly, are you all right, are you hurt?

POLLY: No, I'm fine.

(The Princess helps Polly up, at which point Polly hugs the Princess.)

PRINCESS: It's all right, you're safe now.

(Outside the capsule, the fight between Quinn and Kebble comes to an end, as Quinn knocks Kebble out. Hearing him hit the floor, the Princess and Polly rush to the door of the capsule, to see what has happened. When they Quinn has won, they both sigh in relief.)

DOCTOR: Well done, Quinn!

PRINCESS: Doctor, look who I found!

DOCTOR: Polly, oh, thank goodness!

PRINCESS: Now we just need to find Ben.

POLLY: They've got him, those people who kidnapped me.

DOCTOR: The rebels. Yes, we know. He gave himself up so that we could escape. But don't worry, that boy can take care of himself.

PRINCESS: Just like you did, Polly.

POLLY: Well, I didn't do much.

DOCTOR: Were you blindfolded?

POLLY: No, I saw quite a lot actually.

DOCTOR: Did you see that man who left with the Dalek just now?

POLLY: Yes. His name was Valmar. He's been working for the Daleks.

DOCTOR: On their static power supply.

POLLY: Yes. (Pointing to Kebble) He wasn't as bad as him though.

PRINCESS: Why do you say that?

POLLY: Well, he was…polite at least. He didn't seem to fully trust the Daleks either. He was aware of how dangerous they are. I told him you two weren't the real examiner, I'm sorry.

PRINCESS: Oh, don't worry about that. Secrets out anyway.

DOCTOR: I wonder if he could be persuaded to help us? (Suddenly) Did you hear that?

(They hear movement from inside the capsule. Quinn grabs the laser Lesterson used to unlock the capsule.)

DOCTOR: That won't help. Just get out, quickly! Move!

(Quinn, Polly and the Princess race out the door of the laboratory, as an armed Dalek exits the capsule. The Doctor grabs a wrench and then races out after his friends before the Dalek can fire. Once outside, the Doctor slams the door shut then jams it by sticking the wrench through the handles.)

DOCTOR: That won't hold them for long, come on.

PRINCESS: Oh no!

POLLY: What is it, Princess?

PRINCESS: I forgot my hat!

(Quinn groans.)

DOCTOR: We'll come back for it later, come on.

(The group run off down the corridor, away from the banging doors of the laboratory.)

(A short while later, in the governor's office, the time travellers and Quinn have entered. Only to find Hensell dead, spread out across his desk.)

QUINN: The one man who could have saved us.

DOCTOR: Don't worry. The people will follow you, too.

QUINN: Maybe. But there wasn't any maybe about Hensell. He was old-fashioned, single-minded, yes, but he's done a lot of wonderful work for this colony. Events turned out against him, that's all. But why? Why was he killed?

BRAGEN: I can answer that.

(The time travellers and Quinn turn around, finding Bragen has entered behind them with several of his guards.)

PRINCESS: Then please do.

BRAGEN: He wanted to destroy the Daleks, so one of them killed him.

PRINCESS: Hmm, plausible. And yet, I don't quite believe you.

QUINN: Neither do I.

BRAGEN: What you believe no longer matters. I'm declaring martial law. You will all be returned to prison, and properly guarded this time.

DOCTOR: Martial law? What good do you think that will do against the Daleks?

BRAGEN: The Daleks will do as I tell them.

PRINCESS: And what if they don't?

BRAGEN: They will.

PRINCESS: Well, that's hardly an answer.

BRAGEN: If they don't do as they're told then I'll have them destroyed.

DOCTOR: Don't let them hear you say that. Otherwise you might end up like Hensell here.

(Bragen glowers at them.)

BRAGEN: Take them away.

(The guards surround the time travellers and Quinn, before escorting them out.)

PRINCESS: Remember what I told you, Bragen? Well, I'm sorry to say, it's too late for you.

(The Princess' stare has no effect on Bragen, that is until her eyes begin to glow a golden glow. It's only for a moment, and it quickly vanishes, but it's enough to make Bragen feel uncomfortable. And even after the guards removes the Princess and the others from the room, Bragen still feels afraid. As if knowing the end is near…)
