Chapter 4
Hotch stepped in as she widened the door for him to enter. Hotch couldn't help but take in her appearance in the moment. She wore her bright red tank with her black oversized FBI (Female Body Inspector) sweatpants which was a gag gift Morgan got her at last year's secret Santa. Her sweats hung off of her hips and contrasted with the tight tank perfectly. Her hair still had the loose curls from dinner and she wore no makeup. Hotch couldn't wipe off the goofy smile that found its way to his face. Emily's cheeks started to flush again when she caught his smile.
"What's so funny?" Emily asked. She was starting to become self-conscious and thought he was making fun.
"Nothing is funny. You're just really cute right now, I don't think I've ever seen you wearing those sweats." Hotch replied.
"I've been throwing up for days and somehow look cute?" Emily mumbled so low she thought he wouldn't hear as she made her way to sit on the bed.
"Days? I know you weren't feeling well, but you really should see a doctor. The team won't fall apart if you take time off for one day to take care of yourself. You don't have to be so strong and compartmentalize everything. We all care about you and don't want you to feel like you have to be so alone." Hotch stated as he went to sit next to her on the bed.
"Actually…" Emily said as she started to shift her gaze down to avoid eye contact. "That's why you're here. I'm not worried about us liking each other were both adults we've been in relationships before, but my health is what we need to talk about."
Panic filled his face as his mind jumped to every possible illness she could have. His mind started to paint pictures of scenarios of losing her.
"What's wrong? Are you sick? How worried should I be? Is it something really serious? Have you already spoken to your doctor? What are they saying?" Hotch was asking too many questions and was starting to panic. The longer she waited the more he would worry himself.
"Pregnant" was all that left Emily mouth. She had decided before opening the door that she wasn't going to blurt this out but his panicking started to escalate her anxiety and with all of his questions it just flew out of her mouth.
Emily now seen his face starting to contort with his eyebrows tightened and his signature scowl present on his lips. The tears she had been holding in had now spilled down her cheeks.
"I'm sorry! I didn't mean to blurt it out like that and I'm not even sure! All I know is I'm late, I've been hurling for 3 days and nauseous for 8 days. I've always dreamed of being a mom one day, but I've been on the depo shot for four years, I don't know how this was even possible I….." Hotch pulled her into a tight hug and started to rub up and down her back.
"Emily, I'm not mad at you. How could I be? We both participated and like you said you were on birth control there's no way you could've known. I was stunned yes, even surprised, but I was happy I was starting to think Jack would never know the joys of a sibling." Hotch's response gave Emily more peace of mind than she had in weeks. She started to relax onto his shoulder as he started to play with her hair.
"I'm going to head to the 24hr Walmart and pick up some things along with a test. Do you want to come or take a nap?" Hotch's question fell to silence when he noticed her shallow breathing indicating she had fallen asleep.
Hotch grabbed her key card she laid out on her nightstand and started his trip to Walmart picked up three different tests and a ginger ale and crackers before heading back to Emily's room. When he entered Emily was still asleep but seemed to be growing restless. Instead of waking her up to take the test now Hotch laid beside her and started to hold her until she settled. Hotch started playing with her hair until he succumbed to sleep too.
Hotch woke up in a panic, It took him a moment to realize what shook him awake. Retching. Emily must've dashed out of the bed. Hotch immediately followed into the bathroom and found Emily crouched over the toilet hugging her sides dry heaving. It was clear she had nothing left the vomit but her stomach was still recoiling. Hotch went to grab the bag from Walmart and handed her the warm ginger ale and four crackers.
"Take small sips and nibble on one at a time. It should help settle your stomach." Hotch spoke softly but sounded scared.
"Are you feeling any better?" He asked after she finished the four crackers.
"A little, but my stomach is still rocky." Emily's voice was hoarse from the acid in the bile.
"Okay its 7:30am and the jet leaves at 8:10am can you be ready to leave soon?" Hotch asked.
"Umm yeah I just have to change and brush my teeth." Emily responded.
"Sit with me on the jet?" Hotch asked.
"Of course. Where else would I be sitting?" Emily smiled at him as he moved in and placed a kiss on her forehead before leaving to get ready and pack his bag.
Emily exited her room at the same time as JJ and decided to walk down to the only black SUV left in the parking lot with her.
"Think he knows I have a hangover?" pointing out Hotch carrying what appeared to be three coffee cups.
"Probably!" Emily laughed.
"One for you, and one for you. Rossi, Reid and Morgan apparently got breakfast and headed to the landing already. It's cheap motel coffee but there's cream and sugar in the bag." Hotch explained as they got into the car.
Emily noticed her cup was the only one marked with and E and when she took a sip she smiled because it wasn't cheap coffee at all he picked a soft breakfast tea for her and too the tag off so it looked like her normal coffee.
When they got on the jet JJ curled up on the couch and started to drink her coffee with her eyes closed. Reid started to go over case files and Rossi and Morgan were eating and talking about the recent Cubs game. Which left Emily and Hotch squared away in the front of the plane together. Once the jet took off Hotch said he needed to refill his coffee and went to the café area of the jet.
Emily phone began to ring and when she looked at the caller ID she started to smile.
"You're calling me now? You know I'm on a case." Emily laughed. She could see Morgan minding her business and decided to have a little fun.
"Is this not a good time?" Hotch asked innocently.
"I always have time for you! I'm on my way back to DC now what's going on?" Emily replied as all three men's interest were now peaked.
"Would you like to come over for dinner? Is 6:30 okay? I've been told I make a mean chicken parmesan with some steamed vegetables. I picked up a few tests and figured we could take them together. No matter what the results are you have me, you won't be alone in any of this." Hotch knew this was going to be the easiest way to set up a time without the team becoming suspicious of their separate dinner.
"Dinner sounds great! I can't wait to see you! Thank you, for everything…..really." Emily almost broke down but kept her composure long enough to answer his question.
