(A/N: I wanted to make this a bonus because it isn't necessarily related to the plot; it gives background events and explains some things, but at most it's just that. You don't have to read this particular chapter if you don't want to. Thanks for reading regardless, and the main story'll pick up—coincidentally—at the first chapter of the second arc!)
Lucina understood that their first mission would be simple; they would go to the Shepherds' garrison and come back home. She also understood why that particular task was their first mission—Sully lived close to the garrison, being the one who maintained it, and therefore she could follow them from a distance to make sure they didn't get into any trouble. It was just a guess, of course, but Lucina knew her mother fairly well when it came to how she treated Morgan; if the Mini Shepherds happened to do horribly in this mission, it would be a sign that they might need to make a habit of someone following them.
It was an…odd feeling, to see Morgan out of the castle. Quite frankly, Lucina had expected that Robin would keep him at the castle for another year or two, considering that Lucina's first trip out of Ylisse was when she was fifteen. At the very least, she didn't think it would be when he was just barely thirteen. When she had time alone to her thoughts—which was rare, as many of the others entertained some conversation or another that required her to listen—she could imagine how much stranger this must be to Robin.
Their first time setting up camp was when they were about three days out from Ylisstol; before then there were inns, and now that they were farther away it would be quicker to go through forests instead of making sure they were always sleeping in a town. Lucina, Laurent, and surprisingly Owain guided the rest towards setting up. When they finished, they determined a watch system; Lucina, Cynthia, and Kjelle were first.
After everyone went their separate ways and bid goodnight, it took about five minutes before Cynthia yawned. "Oh, wow. I am not ready for watch duty. How are you two not tired?"
"I already go to bed late on most days," Lucina explained. "I've stayed up all night once or twice."
"No hot drinks or anything?" Cynthia asked. When Lucina shook her head, she let out a little whistle. "I have a newfound respect for you, Luce. I kind of wish I could do that."
"You know Lucina's also slept through all of the daylight before, right?" Kjelle said, looking at the pegasus knight. "And on a normal day she won't wake up until after breakfast—I know that and I only visit every other week or so to train."
"Hmm… I take it back, then," Cynthia decided. "My mother would be worried if I ever slept that much, even if I got the cool bonus of not being tired when I'm supposed to be watching for thieves or something—although that does explain why I never saw you until lunch whenever I'd visit."
They fell into silence for a few minutes, then Kjelle glanced around her at the tents. "…Think everyone's asleep?" She asked quietly.
"Most of them, at least," Lucina replied.
Kjelle nodded and looked at Lucina (and, to some extent, Cynthia, who was sitting next to Lucina). "I have a question that might sound a bit rude," Kjelle said. "Either one of you can answer, really."
"Go ahead," Lucina replied.
"Right," Kjelle said, growing a bit quieter. "So, uh… What's the whole thing with Morgan? He acts like he's never been outside of Ylisstol before."
"That's because he hasn't," Cynthia explained, quiet but still oddly chipper.
Kjelle simply blinked, and Lucina looked towards the fire as she continued with Cynthia's statement. "This is Morgan's first time outside of the castle."
"…What?" Kjelle asked. "How can you never leave your house? Even if it's a pretty big place, it's bound to get boring eventually."
"He's never wanted to, as far as I'm aware," Lucina replied. "Leave the castle, I mean—and if he ever did, he'd never say it."
"What's the reason behind that, then?" Kjelle said. She seemed to notice Lucina's slow descent into vagueness, and as such proceeded carefully. "If you're allowed to say, anyway."
"Didn't something happen when you were little?" Cynthia mused. "My mother always says how sad it was; it's one of the reasons I visited the castle so much as a kid. Robin essentially cut Morgan off from having friends outside the castle staff and family members when she decided to keep him at the castle—that's what my mother understands of it, anyway, and even then it was Chrom who told her."
"I don't know the full details myself," Lucina admitted silently. "All I know is that we had a caretaker at some point—different from the rest of the staff in that they were a family friend. Something happened to that person, or that person did something unwise, and it scared Robin—enough so that we were both taken away from the outside world for a time. I was older and therefore gave more protests, so within the next year I was allowed to go on trips with Chrom again. Other things happened as well, but… I've never asked after it."
"Must've been hard," Kjelle decided, sitting back and frowning. "I couldn't have done…any of it. How old were you?"
"Six and two. It's been…almost exactly eleven years since then."
They fell into silence for a little bit before Cynthia said, "Well, we're all out and about for the time being. There's no reason to mope now, right? Morgan'll probably consider all of us friends when we're done this first mission, so at least it won't just be me, family, staff, and Noire."
There was a bit of murmur as an agreement, and it took about another hour before Cynthia left. Switching out with Laurent, within the next two hours he insisted that the other two sleep, and Lucina woke up Owain to take her place while Kjelle woke up Brady. The next morning held a much more cheerful note than the girls' conversation the night before, if only because Morgan refused to let them fall into any topics that were less than happy. They made it to the Shepherds' garrison within the next few days, and they all headed back to Ylisstol together so they could celebrate their first completed mission.
