The Ultimate Detective and The Ultimate Hope Gaiden: A Visit From the Prime Minister!
*Knock Knock*
Makoto looked up from his desk and called "It's open."
The door cracked open, revealing the politely curious Kirumi as she slipped in and closed the door behind her. "You wished to see me, Headmaster Naegi?"
Makoto nodded and gestured to the chair in front of her. "Kirumi, please, sit." Kirumi nodded and approached the chair, sitting down and folding her hands in her lap. "Now then…I'm called you here because I have a very important request for you as your headmaster."
Kirumi raised an eyebrow, her curiosity piqued by Makoto's admission. "I see…and what is this request you wish me to fulfill?"
"Well, as the Headmaster of Hope's Peak Academy, I keep in communication with a number of government officials. One of those contacts is planning to visit Hope's Peak in the coming days."
"And…who is this government official, if I'm permitted to inquire?"
Makoto nodded and disclosed "Fumio Kishida."
Kirumi's eyes widened as she stammered "The P-Prime M-Minister?!"
"That's right. It goes without saying that we want to give the impression that Hope's Peak Academy is still a top-level school deserving of government funding. The vice-headmistress and I are handling things on the faculty side, making sure the school is tidy and ensuring any of our more…colorful teachers are on their best behavior."
"I see…and I take it you wish for me to handle the student body during the Minister Kishida's visit?"
"Indeed." Makoto and Kirumi glanced at Kyoko as she walked in the office, circling around them to stand next to her husband. "As the Student Council President, I think it goes without saying that you are the best-equipped to ensure the students behave themselves and are focused on their education. Headmaster Naegi and I will have our hands full with the staff, so we're counting on you to ensure the student body is at peak performance during the prime minister's visit."
"I understand…" Kirumi bowed her head slightly as she vowed "Then I shall proudly take this request. I promise, we will give nothing but the very best to ensure Minister Kishida understands that we are proud students of Hope's Peak Academy."
Makoto nodded approvingly and smiled at his student. "I knew we could count on you, Kirumi."
"Then if you'll excuse me…" Kirumi stood up and bowed as she finished "I must begin work on fulfilling this request immediately."
She then turned around and walked out of the office, her eyes lighting in determined excitement at her new task.
Kirumi clapped, getting everyone's attention. "Okay, is everyone here?" Kirumi scanned the crowd of students in the gym before her lips tugged into a worried frown. "Where's Saihara-kun?"
"…Ano…Kirumi…?" Kiki hesitantly volunteered. "Shuichi said he might be a little late. Apparently, his uncle has an important case that he can't get out of."
Kirumi let out an exasperated sigh as she muttered "Today, of all days…doesn't he know the prime minister is more important than one of his clients?"
"Kirumi, are you alright?" Gonta frowned worriedly before he took out a small glass cube with a cricket trapped inside its boundaries. "Can one of Gonta's bug friends-"
"Not now, Gonta." Kirumi interrupted curtly. "I don't have time to play with your bugs right now, so put it away."
"Sorry!" Gonta apologized before he pocketed the cricket.
Kirumi sighed before she turned her attention to Kiki. "Kiki, did Saihara-kun say when he'd be…Saihara-kun…"
Shuichi wheezed as he stumbled into the gym, exhausted from his hurry to get to the gym on time. "S…Sorry…a client interview…took longer…than I thought…"
"…Shikata wa nai…" Kirumi shook her head before she announced "Now that everyone's here, we can begin. Now, as you all know, the prime minister of Japan is coming to Hope's Peak Academy during school tomorrow. As such, it is important that both the school and the student body are in peak condition."
Yeah, that's why we've been working our butts off during cleaning duty… Kiki deadpanned as she recalled Kirumi's prior demands that they work even harder to keep the school clean than normal.
"Thanks to your combined efforts, however, the school has never been cleaner." Kirumi smiled proudly at the students who elected her. "As such, all that's left is to reinforce our conduct as students to ensure that the prime minister sees us as high-caliber students worthy of Hope's Peak Academy's proud legacy."
Kirumi's brow furrowed as she saw the other students nod in understanding. Scanning the crowd, her eyes settled on Kiki, causing the pleasant young girl to gulp nervously.
"Naegi-chan. I realize you do not wish to parade this fact, but know that as Headmaster Naegi's daughter, your conduct will reflect heavily on the administration. As such, I hope I do not need to instruct you to be on your best behavior tomorrow."
"H-Hai…" Not that I was planning to misbehave. I've never even gotten a detention in my life! Being sent to my mom's office would cause me to die of embarrassment!
"Saihara-kun. I realize that assisting your uncle with his detective agency is important, but we need to give the impression that we value our education. So please, inform your uncle that you cannot work tomorrow."
"S-Sure, I'll do that…" Shuichi nodded.
Satisfied, Kirumi turned to the blue-haired cosplayer. "Shirogane-chan, I must ask you to refrain from any and all discussion regarding cosplay, anime, manga, or video games."
"Now that's just plain cruel..." Tsumugi lamented, causing Kirumi to sigh in exasperation.
"I know that Minister Kishida is friendlier to otaku culture than most government officials, but the fact remains that we still have to convey to him that we are serious about our education. That will be harder to do if he catches you talking in anime references."
"…Fine…" Tsumugi sighed in defeat, mumbling unintelligibly under her breath in frustration.
As Kiki rubbed Tsumugi's back in comfort, Kirumi turned to her boyfriend. "Gokuhara-kun?"
"Y-Yes?"
…I hate to tell him to do this, but the importance of this visit means that we all need to make sacrifices… With a regretful frown, Kirumi instructed "I must ask you to keep your bug friends at home. If the prime minister catches you with them, he might think we have an infestation on our hands. I'm sure you don't want to make Headmaster Naegi explain why you're allowed to freely carry bugs."
"Sorry!" Gonta profusely apologized. "Gonta will leave his bug friends at home!"
"In addition…I know this is still a challenge for you, but if you can, try to speak in the first person."
"…Okay…I…will try…"
Kirumi nodded gratefully before she addressed the crowd at large. "I understand I'm asking a lot of all of you, but I promise, this is all for only one day. Then we can go back to our normal lives. I hope I can count on all of you for your cooperation. Now then, dismissed. I suggest you get a good night's sleep after you complete your homework. It wouldn't look good if the prime minister catches one of us asleep in class."
The students bowed before they walked out of the gym. Kirumi sighed nervously as she followed the crowd, taking her own advice.
I hope I've done enough to complete this important request…
"Okay…" Makoto sighed as he and all his staff met in the Staff Room. "The prime minister will be here soon. Remember, all of you need to be on your best behavior today, or it could prove detrimental to Hope's Peak Academy's funding."
"Indeed." Kyoko nodded. "While this applies more to some of you than others, we cannot stress enough how important it is that we all contribute to presenting the prime minister with a good impression."
"Or no impression, for some of us." Byakuya corrected. "I will be in my office all day working on finances, so it's likely the prime minister won't even see me."
"The same's true for me and Hajime." Komaru nodded. "We don't have any students having sessions with us, so we just have to stay out of sight and out of mind."
"Yes, but still, we should spend today refreshing ourselves on our psychology books, if for no other reason than giving us the appearance of productively working." Hajime advised.
"I shouldn't have anything to do, either." Kazuichi lamented. "We've put all our energy in cleaning up the school that there shouldn't be anything for me to do."
Makoto nodded "Okay, still, be on standby in case something happens. Murphy's law and all…"
Kazuichi grimaced before Kyoko cleared her throat. "As for the rest of you…Miu…"
"Yeah, yeah, I'll be polite and…stuff…"
So glad you managed to refrain from utilizing profanity… Kyoko deadpanned. "Porkfeet, I trust you can keep Ibuki from making music class too chaotic?"
"Aww, but that's half the fun of music!" Ibuki grumbled as Porkfeet shook his head in amusement.
"Don't worry, I'll keep Ibuki's eccentric tendencies in check."
Kyoko nodded appreciatively before she turned to Toko. "Toko, I trust you can keep Genocide Jack in check?"
"Don't worry…she w-won't get out, I p-promise!"
That's good; we don't need a surprise appearance in front of the prime minister. "Hiro, on the off chance that you get to speak to the prime minister, it's okay to talk about your past plays, but keep it short and concise. And please…" Kyoko narrowed her eyes. "Don't try to sell him any fortunes."
"N-noted…" Hiro gulped, satisfying the vice-headmistress.
"Hina, are your students aware that they need to show their very best today?"
Hina grinned and nodded. "You got it! I've made sure to tell them that I won't accept anything less than work worthy of a gold medal! I even denied myself donuts as motivation!"
That's…honestly impressive… Makoto and Kyoko thought before Makoto clapped his hands. "Alright, that should be everything-"
"Headmaster!" Everyone turned as Makoto's secretary peeked her head in the door. "The prime minister just arrived and he's waiting at the front gates."
Makoto nodded. "Well, you heard her. Let's go out there and show the prime minister that we're a school worthy of government funding!"
"Minister Kishida."
Makoto smiled at the government official, his neatly combed, short black hair giving his face a slick appearance. Fumio smiled as he shook hands with Makoto.
"Headmaster Makoto Naegi, your reputation precedes you…" He glanced towards Kyoko before he complimented "As does yours, Vice-Headmistress Kyoko Naegi."
"Likewise…" Kyoko nodded as she shook hands with the prime minister.
"Well, shall we head inside?" Makoto gestured towards the front door of the Main Building. "We would be honored to give you a tour of our facilities before we speak in my office."
Fumio chuckled "Please, the honor is all mine."
With cautiously optimistic glances towards each other, Makoto and Kyoko turned and walked to the front entrance, an interested Fumio following closely behind them.
"I take it I arrived during a class transition period?" Fumio inquired as the trio brushed past students in the hallway.
Makoto nodded. "Everyone should be leaving Homeroom to their first class of the day."
"Alright, I'll see you later, Shuichi." The three of them stared ahead at the heterochromatic girl and her blue-haired friend.
"Yeah, see you at lunch, Kiki." Shuichi smiled, waving as he turned and headed down a different hallway.
Once he vanished from her sight, Kiki resumed walking down the hallway…before she came to a halt as she came face-to-face with her parents and the politician. Her eyes widened as she felt a lump of nervousness form in her throat.
"Da-Headmaster…" Baka! You can't call him Dad, not when the prime minister is present! "I'm just headed to my next class."
Fumio raised an eyebrow. "Your daughter is also a student, Headmaster Naegi?"
Makoto breathed an internal sigh of relief as Fumio's voice contained not a hint of scolding, merely curiosity. He nodded and introduced "Minister Kishida, this is my eldest daughter, Kiki Naegi. She's a third-year student here at Hope's Peak Academy."
"Kiki Naegi…Kiki Naegi…" Fumio's eyes brightened in realization as he beamed and shook the surprised girl's hands. "Ah, now I remember. You're the girl who averted the Second Tragedy!"
"Oh…I guess so…" Kiki's cheeks flushed pink, embarrassed by the recognition of her victory against Akki.
"Japan owes you a debt of gratitude, Naegi-chan."
"Oh…it was…n-nothing…" Once Fumio released her hand, Kiki quickly bowed. "I should get to class…yoroshiku onegaishimasu."
Kiki hurried down the hall and out of view. "I take it she doesn't handle praise very well…so humble, that one."
"Indeed." Kyoko smiled in amusement, remarking "She takes after her father."
Makoto chuckled, scratching his cheek before he shook the mild embarrassment from his mind. "She and another one of my students, Saihara Shuichi, have been training to be detectives."
"I see. Well, I'm sure Japan will be better off with them pursuing the truth." Admiration twinkled in Fumio's eyes before he turned to the two administrators. "So, shall we continue with the tour?"
"Alright, everybody, get out there and do your best!" Hina blew her whistle as her bosses and Fumio walked into the gym. "I won't accept anything less than performance worthy of an Olympic gold medalist!"
"Your gym instructor is…quite enthusiastic." Fumio commented, causing Makoto to crack a smile.
"Yeah, she's always been intense like that, even since she was a teenager."
"That's right, you and your most senior staff were classmates, correct?"
"Indeed." Kyoko affirmed Fumio's question. "We were all survivors of the Tragedy, and we rebuilt this school together."
"Yeah." Makoto smiled nostalgically as he admitted "I never would have been able to run this school without them."
Fumio smiled in amusement as he commented "I can see what you meant when you said your daughter got her sense of humility from her father, Vice-Headmistress." Fumio turned towards the door as he suggested "Well, shall we take a look at your other teachers? I don't want to exert more pressure on the students, especially since she seems to be doing just fine without my help."
"N-Now…let's start the first page of The Great Gatsby." Toko began as her eyes moved to focus on Tsumugi. "Shirogane-chan, can you start reading, please?"
"…She looks slightly nervous, for a literature teacher." Fumio quietly observed as he, Makoto, and Kyoko peeked thorugh the door.
Makoto smiled awkwardly, explaining "Believe it or not, she used to be a lot worse."
"Indeed." Kyoko nodded. "Her friendship with Makoto's sister and her marriage to our resident drama club director, Hagakure Yasuhiro, helped to bring her out of her shell. Her social awkwardness still peeks through from time to time, but now she's usually able to shrug it off."
Fumio nodded in understanding. "I see…and do the students like her?"
"W-Well…I wouldn't call her the most charismatic instructor, but she knows her stuff, and the students listen to her at least."
"Sometimes, that's the most we can hope for." Kyoko admitted as Tsumugi stood up and cleared her throat.
"In my younger and more vulnerable years my father gave me some advice that I've been turning over in my mind ever since. Whenever you feel like criticizing anyone, he told me, just remember that all the people in this world haven't had the advantages that you've had."
Toko nodded approvingly, her lips tugging into a smile so subtle that none of the students could make it out. "Yes, very good English pronunciation, Shirogane-chan. Would you please continue with the next paragraph?"
"…She's getting more into it…" Fumio observed as Tsumugi continued to read.
Kyoko nodded. "Toko Hagakure may not be the most approachable teacher at times, but she does do her best to encourage her students in her own way."
Makoto nodded, smiling proudly at his once reclusive friend and employee. "Would you like to see more of what Hope's Peak has to offer, Minister Kishida?"
"Okay, class!" Ibuki cheered as she, Porkfeet, and her students stood in the music room. "Today we're gonna just do some basic band practice." She rubbed the back of her head, frowing in disappointment. "Sorry I don't have anything more exciting planned for you, but the boss man says I have to keep things tame today."
Porkfeet rolled his eyes, muttering "You might not want to say that out loud, Ibuki. It wouldn't be a good idea if the prime minister hears you say that."
Too late for that… Makoto and Kyoko deadpanned as they and Fumio watched from afar.
"Anyway, each of you pick an instrument so we can get started." Porkfeet instructed before the students walked to different instruments.
"So…what should…I…play?" Gonta asked. "It's hard to decide."
"Hm…" Ibuki hummed before her eyes sparkled. "I got it! Gokuhara-kun, you're gonna do the drums!"
Porkfeet nodded. "Good choice; they're not too complex. Just make sure not to break the equipment."
"Right…I…will be gentle."
With that, Gonta went to sit at the nearby drum, picking up his drumsticks and resting them against the surface of the instrument.
"Okay, is everybody ready?" Once everyone nodded, Ibuki counted down "Alright then, let's take it from the top. Just play the song on the screen over here. A-one, A-two, A-one, two, three, four!"
With that, the class turned into an amateur orchestra. The melodies coming from their instruments fused together, forming an impressively synchronized melody.
"I must say, I'm impressed." Fumio commented. "The two of them must be very good teachers if they're able to turn their classes into such talented orchestras."
Makoto nodded. "Yeah, Ibuki can be a bit…chaotic at times, but her husband is able to keep her more eccentric tendencies in check."
"Indeed." Kyoko concurred. "Together they make an effective combination, and Hope's Peak Academy is better off with them."
"Well, I'll have to come by sometime so I can see one of their official concerts." Fumio smiled, excitement twinkling in his eyes. "So, where to next?"
"Okay, listen up everyone!" Miu clapped her hands, attracting everyone's attentions inside the computer lab. "Today we're going to start programming in Python. I dunno how many of you are gonna want to move on to becoming programmers, but I suppose I should teach you guys the basics. Now, open up the Powerpoints in your student emails containing today's lecture so you can follow along with my explanations."
Thank kami she avoided any profanities or sexual innuendos today… Makoto and Kyoko let out an internal sigh of relief.
Fumio raised an eyebrow at the relieved light in their eyes but shook his curiosity away in favor of watching the class as Miu continued her explanation. Once she finished her verbal lecture, Miu clapped her hands.
"Alright, now do the practice exercise on the final slide. Open your IDEs and follow the instructions given during the lecture. If anyone has any questions, just raise your hand and I'll come to your computer."
With that, the students quietly got to work, the computer lab as quiet as a church except for the sound of fingers clacking on keyboards.
"Is that the Saihara-kun you mentioned earlier?" Fumio asked as he gestured to the blue-haired detective at one of the cubicles. As Makoto nodded, Fumio complimented "He seems to be quite the intense worker."
Kyoko nodded. "Indeed. His uncle taught him a hard work ethic, and he's a very earnest young man."
"Ano…Iruma-sensei?" Shuichi awkwardly raised his hand, causing Miu to walk over to him.
"What, are you having trouble, Saihara-kun?"
"Ah, no, I think I finished."
Furrowing her brow, Miu leaned over his shoulder and briefly scanned the computer screen with her eyes. "Well, I guess you're not a half-bad programmer, Saihara-kun. Maybe if the whole detective thing doesn't work out, you can think of programming as a fallback."
"Ah, I'm not sure I'm that good with technology." Shuichi chuckled awkwardly.
"Anyway…just sit quietly while the others finish. Once everyone's done, we'll continue the lecture."
Shuichi nodded as Miu walked away from the amateur detective and to a student who was raising their hand. Fumio frowned, clearly offput by Miu's passive style.
"She's…not exactly engaging well with the students, at least in my opinion."
Kyoko sighed, explaining "It's true that she's one of the…less-engaged teachers under our employ. However, her resume is honestly impressive, so we overlooked her flaws in favor of her exceptional talent in her field."
"Yeah, and we haven't had any real issues with her since we employed her." Makoto vouched for his employee.
Fumio nodded. "I see…well, I'll trust your judgment."
Makoto and Kyoko smiled in relief before Makoto suggested "Why don't we show you some of the other facilities Hope's Peak Academy has to offer?"
"So…how did you enjoy your time at Hope's Peak Academy?" Makoto asked hopefully as the three of them sat in his office.
Fumio smiled and nodded approvingly. "You certainly run quite the impressive school, Headmaster Naegi. Though there are exceptions, for the most part, it seems like the teachers and students are engaged in their studies. I'm hopeful that they'll leave this school as promising adults worthy of Hope's Peak's legacy."
Makoto smiled gratefully. "Thank you for the compliments, Minister Kishida, though I can hardly take all the credit. The students deserve praise as well."
"Indeed." Kyoko agreed. "Our Student Council President worked exceptionally hard to make sure everyone was on their best behavior today."
Fumio raised a curious eyebrow, intrigued by the revelation. "I see…may I meet this student, if it's no trouble?"
*Knock Knock*
"It's open." Makoto called before the door opened, allowing Kirumi to walk inside and quietly close the door behind her.
"You wished to see me, Headmaster?"
"Well…" Makoto scratched his cheek, smiling awkwardly. "It's not so much me…"
Kyoko sighed and explained "What he's trying to say is that the prime minister wished to speak to you."
Kirumi's eyes widened in shock, just barely able to keep her hand from throwing itself against her lips. She nervously turned her head, her face turning as pale as a sheet as she saw Fumio sitting on the couch.
"M-Minister Kishida…" Kirumi shakily bowed, stammering "Ha-Hajimema-mashi-shite…"
Fumio chuckled, shaking his head as he stood up. He slightly bowed his head, replying "Yoroshiku onegaishimasu, Tojo-chan. It's my understanding that you inspired the students as their Student Council President."
"Well…I wouldn't say I inspired them…I merely made sure they worked hard so you would see their full potential today."
Fumio nodded, commenting "You seem like someone who prides themselves on getting results."
Kirumi smiled proudly. "Of course I am. As an aspiring maid, I work as hard as I can to fulfill the requests that I accept. That's why I decided to become the Student Council President; so that I could work as hard as I can to fulfill my classmates' requests for how to improve the school as much as we can."
Fumio beamed. "I like your work ethic, Tojo-chan. Tell me, what are your plans after you graduate from Hope's Peak Academy?"
"Well…I don't have a specific plan yet, though I do know that I'd like to continue serving people in whatever capacity I can."
"I see, that's a good goal. We could use someone like you working in government. In fact…how would you like to intern in my office after you graduate?"
This time, Kirumi couldn't withhold her shocked gasp. "Intern…in your…o-office…?"
Fumio nodded. "That's right, I know you'd fit right in. What do you say, Tojo-chan?"
Kirumi bowed, replying reverently "If you desire it, then I would be happy to fulfill your request, Minister Kishida."
"Good, good!" Fumio laughed. "I'll be in touch after your graduation." He then turned to Makoto and Kyoko. "Well, thank you very much for the tour. I'm sure the Diet will gladly vote to continue funding Hope's Peak Academy. For now though, I must be on my way." He shook hands with the two administrators. "Goodbye, Headmaster and Vice-Headmistress Naegi."
"Thank you." Makoto smiled politely.
"Indeed." Kyoko smiled gratefully. "It'll be good to know that Hope's Peak will continue to receive government funding."
"Well then, goodbye." With that, Fumio turned around and walked out the door, leaving the two administrators and the Student Council President alone in Makoto's office.
Makoto smiled at Kirumi, telling her "I'm sure you must be excited at your new career prospects, Tojo-chan."
"That being said, you should return to class now." Kyoko advised.
"Of course…" Unable to keep the amazed smile off her face, Kirumi bowed deeply before she stood up and turned around. "Goodbye, Headmaster, Vice-Headmistress."
