She was very much inclined to walk away again, but at the same time, they should leave soon since there was nothing here—of course, Lucina was curious regardless. Or…maybe she was slightly disturbed. She couldn't easily tell which, but she knew it had to be something similar to what Lissa felt.
The woman in front of them had blonde hair and the Brand on her forehead. While Lissa and Lucina looked at her in curiosity, she returned the gaze with confusion and a hint of sadness. Other people must have made that same declaration, and she must always have the same answer.
A bit hesitant, Lucina took a few steps forward. "Aunt Lissa," she said again.
Lissa looked at her for a second, as if afraid that the person would leave if she looked away for too long. "Your parents won't mind if we're a tad late," she said. "Can you give me a few minutes? You don't need to hear me questioning this nice lady."
"...May I stay instead?" Lucina asked. "I'll stay quiet."
"Thanks, kid," Lissa replied. She smiled, but it was the kind that she put on to reassure them. It wasn't always genuine. "Morgan'll start freaking out if you don't come back, though. Just tell them that I'll eat later and start packing up. I won't take too long."
Given who the woman resembled, Lucina was still hesitant to leave—although Emmeryn fell before Lucina was born, she could recognize the face from portraits and descriptions of her late aunt. Lissa kept on looking at her, though, so Lucina finally left them to talk.
When she got back to where the rest of the Mini Shepherds were, Owain sighed. "My soul desires to travel! The company of close friends! The warmth of my own bed!" He looked at Lucina and frowned. Almost nonchalant—if not still complaining—he said, "Where is my esteemed mother? Has she gone to dine at some other establishment?"
"She wanted to talk with someone," Lucina replied. "Until she's done, let's make sure we have everything. As long as it doesn't take too long, we can still head back home today—there's no thieves here, and we can have someone else to ask the khans if we were simply misinformed."
Most of them nodded and started checking their things. The most they brought with them was tents and extra weapons, but it didn't hurt to make sure they still had it with them and packed up. Once they confirmed that they had everything, they more-or-less chatted until Lissa came back little more than an hour later.
She announced her arrival by happily saying, "Kids! I found the reason why we came!"
They all looked at her, and Lucina noticed the woman walking with Lissa—the one she wanted to talk to. The one that looked like Emmeryn.
At least Morgan and Owain also recognized her, and a few others—notably Laurent—grew more curious at the sight of her. Lissa smiled genuinely now, saying, "This is Emmeryn! You've all heard stories, right? She fell during the first war."
"With all due respect," Kjelle said skeptically, "How would she survive, unless everything I've ever heard is wrong and it wasn't a height that could kill someone?"
"I have no idea!" Lissa replied, almost proudly. "But she's here, right?"
"I'm half-confident she's finally gone insane," Owain muttered.
Lissa glared at him. "I heard that," she said with a frown. "She doesn't remember a whole lot, so she didn't go unscathed, but…" She paused, then smiled as she said, "She can't come back with us, so I wanted to introduce everyone! We can still leave today, I promise."
She proceeded to introduce the woman to everyone, and generally talked to her afterwards. Laurent bombarded the poor thing with questions that she was able to partially answer: things like how she survived, who brought her to Regna Ferox, how much she remembered. The woman responded in sentences only amounting to a few short words. It was certainly fascinating, Lucina supposed, if not confusing. Lissa just seemed happy to see her, even after explaining why Emmeryn couldn't come back with them.
"Like I mentioned before, she doesn't remember a whole lot," Lissa said. "She's been here for a while, too—almost for the whole time after she fell. She said Basilio found her after she had come to Ferox, and that's why we were called here—because he wanted us to meet her."
"He said…there would be others…" Emmeryn added quietly. "There would be…two people. I would meet someone…and they would talk with that person… I think they left… I never saw them. He…described them. But I can't remember…"
"Hey, it's okay!" Lissa replied cheerfully. "You met us, right? And I promise, I'll send Chrom and Robin over, too! It just be a little while, because they're ruling Ylisse now."
It was only a little longer before Lissa decided that they should start heading out, and everyone finished up asking any questions they had. "Imma walk her back to where she lives," Lissa announced. "Anyone wanna come with me?"
"I can," Lucina offered.
"All righty!" Lissa chirped. She started walking Emmeryn back to where she stayed, repeating the promises she already made. Once they got there, Lissa's smile faltered for a moment as she said, "We have to head back to Ylisstol. I'll visit when I can, promise."
Emmeryn frowned. "…Wait." Lissa looked at her curiously, and Emmeryn turned to Lucina. "Your name…"
"Lucina," she replied dutifully. "I'm Chrom's daughter."
"…I remember you," Emmeryn said, simple and certain.
"You have to be mistaken if you do," Lucina reasoned, slowly becoming a bit unsettled. "This is the first time we've met—you fell before my parents were even married."
"No…you protected me," Emmeryn maintained stubbornly. "There were…dangerous people. They tried to kill me… But you saved him. Saved me. You guarded my door…but he called you Marth."
Lissa almost looked scared. "Emm, that's not Lucina," she said. "Lucina's right here, and…" She sighed, adding, "That person isn't exactly 'Marth,' either, I guess. Someone guarded your door that night, but it wasn't Lucina and it wasn't 'Marth.'"
"Oh…" Emmeryn seemed to grow a bit disappointed. "Will I…be able to thank them?"
"I don't think so," Lissa said quietly. "She's not around anymore; we don't know where she is. She could be at home, she could be around here… She could be dead, like we thought you were." She managed a little smile. "But if I see her, I'll tell her. She'd be so happy to know that you're still alive…and she'll be glad to hear that you're thankful."
Emmeryn smiled, and Lissa gave her final goodbye wave and went back to the rest of the Mini Shepherds with Lucina. With a deep sigh and a little smile afterwards, Lissa looked at Lucina. "Sorry you had to sit there for that last part," Lissa said. "There was a girl that helped us a lot during the war—we can thank her that each war only lasted a year, and she was the one who accurately guessed where Robin was after she killed Grima. She left after that, so I guess there's a lot of stuff we haven't been able to thank her for. I like to think we'll have a chance one day."
Lucina couldn't offer a meaningful response, so she stayed silent. There seemed to be so many people that seemed to disappear after the war; she always wondered if all of them were nameless friends and helpers of her friends' parents. It certainly felt like it, at least.
