"Did you find him?" Flying Scotsman asked Thomas as he sat next to the sheds at Tidmouth. Thomas settled into the berth next to him looking concerned.
"I searched all over the Island," Thomas said, exhausted. "I couldn't find Green Arrow anywhere."
"He didn't do any of his jobs today either," Emily said annoyed. "I had to do most of them on top of my own and James is still out picking up his slack with Donald and Douglas."
The Flying Scotsman remained silent, concern growing over his face. He looked over at Sir Topham who looked incredibly worried.
"That new diesel was at the scrapyard all day," Edward said. "I don't like him, there's something off about him."
A murmur of agreement rumbled through the sheds.
"I will go out and look for Green Arrow myself, Sir Topham," the Scotsman offered but the man raised his hand.
"No," he said sternly. "I can't risk losing another one of the museum's engines, especially not you again. Olivia will most probably skin me alive if I did. When Tornado gets here, she can escort you back to Ulfstead Castle."
"But-" the Scotsman looked ready to protest but stopped when he saw the Fat Controller's face. "I can't let Green Arrow get scrapped sir. I made a promise, to myself, to-"
The Scotsman paused and gave a defeated sigh.
"I would never forgive myself if something happened to him," the Scotsman said quietly, looking away from the others.
Silence rang across the yards.
"We'll find him," Thomas assured the Scotsman. "I promise we'll find him."
The Scotsman didn't look up, he simply stared at the ground.
"I'll go out and look for him sir," Gordon suddenly spoke up, surprising the other engines. "I can escort Flying Scotsman while I'm out."
"You will?" The Fat Controller was confused. Gordon was the most outspoken and hostile against Green Arrow and yet here he was volunteering to help look for him.
"Yes sir," Gordon addressed his controller but his eyes were fixed on Scotsman.."No funny business I promise sir. I'll take my brother straight to Ulfstead Castle then go looking for him. You can come with me in case you don't believe me."
His brother looked at him equally as confused.
"Very well, I'll leave it to you Gordon," Sir Topham said. "Inform Ryan and Boco to search their branchlines on your way. We simply cannot have museum engines disappearing every time they come here."
"Yes sir," Gordon said and slowly chuffed out to reverse back on his brother who just looked confused.
He didn't say a word as he was coupled to Gordon's tender and was pulled along his way.
The two Pacifics travelled silently for the longest while before Scotsman eventually spoke up.
"Is this… is this how you felt when I went missing?" He asked Gordon quietly. "Almost a year of… feeling like this?"
Gordon didn't say anything.
His silence held more weight than anything he could say to his brother.
"I'm sorry," Scotsman said quietly, his voice barely above a whisper.
The two fell silent for a long while. As they travelled, the blood red sun disappeared behind the horizon and the stars began to twinkle in the twilight glow.
As the last of the orange glow finally faded and a cool wind began to blow Gordon suddenly spoke up.
"Why do you care so much about Green Arrow?" He asked. "This isn't just about you stealing his rebuild. There's more to this, I know that brother. I know you. You wouldn't care about some scrappy little mixed engine unless there was something personal was going on."
The Flying Scotsman shifted uncomfortably behind for a few long moments.
"After you left for the North West I didn't really have anyone else," Scotsman eventually said. "For almost a decade I worked alone, I was praised and I was famous but… I never had any one, no friends, no nothing. Our siblings thought me a show off and conceited."
The Scotsman was quiet for a little while.
"Gresley introduced me to Green Arrow when he was first built. He was the first of his class, he was bright, intelligent and clever," Scotsman said quietly. "He was deceptively powerful too. He could easily match my strength if he pushed himself. He looked up to us Pacific's, he wanted to impress us but he was often ignored. After that his class became known as 'fish haulers' and 'lesser Gresley's' by our siblings."
He paused and looked guilty.
"I think Gresley quickly forgot about them as he became obsessed with speed. I watched Arrow grow bitter over the years. He hated being underestimated, he hated how everyone always compared his class to us. I didn't care for the V2's at least until I befriended Coldstreamer," Flying Scotsman said with a sad smile.
"The Ice Queen," Gordon mused. "Pulled the fish trains so fast that the ice had barely melted when she got to the other side of the country. Henry was so jealous of her."
The Flying Scotsman laughed. "She got her speed from me."
Gordon snorted. "Of course you would say that."
"You don't befriend the Flying Scotsman for nothing, you know, I like to share my tricks around," the Scotsman grinned. His grin faulted as he gave a heavy sigh.
"I miss her, more than anything," he said sadly. "I never even got to say goodbye to her. When I asked where she was they just told me she'd already been scrapped, along with everyone of her class except Arrow."
Gordon felt the sadness in his boiler become heavy and stifling. He'd never heard his brother sound so heart broken. Flying Scotsman did truly adore her for him to be so broken about her loss.
"I promised myself," Scotsman said his voice cracking. "I promised to protect Green Arrow for her. No matter how much of an insufferable git Arrow became, I always tried to protect him."
"Even after he tried to have you scrapped?"
"Arrow was put into a position he couldn't get out of, it's what Cain does with people and engines," Scotsman said quietly. "He did it to me, he did it to Arrow so of course I'm going to sympathise with someone who suffered at the hands of that vile cretin."
The Scotsman sighed looking up at the stars in the sky.
"Besides, you saw how terrified he was this morning. Arrow might be a coward but he is one of the hardest workers I know, he wouldn't just drop his jobs for anything, not even your bullying. Something serious or catastrophic must have happened to him to make him run like that."
Gordon pondered his brother's words quietly.
"I'll find him," he said catching Scotsman's attention. "I'll find him for you, I'll squash that little diesel if I have to."
"Thank-you little brother," Scotsmam gave a hopeful smile.
"No, you don't get to call me that now," Gordon reminded Scotsman. "You only have one tender now."
"I'm still bigger than you," Scotsman affirmed.
"We're the same size!"
"No, I have smoke deflectors and a corridor tender, they make me look bigger."
"They do not!"
"They do too!"
"You're such a pest!"
Flying Scotsman just laughed as his brother grumbled angrily.
"It's Tornado!" Emily squealed happily as Tornado appeared in the distance, as she moved towards Tidmouth sheds.
She gave a loud blast of her whistle and the Sudrian engines returned in earnest. She grinned widely as she could but her smile faded slightly as she saw Gordon wasn't there.
"Hello everyone! I missed you all!"
"It's wonderful to see you Ms Tornado!" Henry greeted her happily. "You can have my berth when I got out to pull the Flying Kipper."
"Oh! Thank-you Henry!" She smiled at him as she pulled in to Gordon's empty berth next to him. "Where's Gordon? Is he pulling a night train?"
The Sudrian Engines glanced at each other nervously.
"Well he went to shunt Scotsman back to Ulfstead Castle this evening," Emily explained and Tornado's brow furrowed.
"Is something wrong with him?" She asked worried.
"No, his driver just had to go back to the Mainland for the weekend so he wasn't able to return to his shed after his rail tour today," Emily told her. "Then I don't know if he's coming back tonight."
"Depends if he finds Green Arrow or not," Thomas interjected and Tornado suddenly found herself wide awake.
"Green Arrow? What does he have to do with anything?"
"He's been acting weird since that new diesel arrived yesterday," James huffed. "He almost derailed me this morning after freaking out about him. Then I had to do all his jobs today! No one's seen him since this morning."
James huffed angrily. His front buffers still ached where Arrow had slammed in to him and his wheels hurt from all the extra work he had had to do. He wasn't at all happy with the smaller Gresley.
Tornado frowned.
That didn't sound like Green Arrow. He was cowardly for sure, but he wasn't someone who would simply abandon his work. He was one of the hardest workers she'd ever met.
"Before that he did his jobs without fuss, even with some of the engines bullying him," Edward remarked with a pointed glance at James and Henry.
"Maybe he freaked out because Flying Scotsman got his rebuild," Henry suggested and Tornado hissed steam.
"Wouldn't surprise me," She scowled angrily. "He would always complain about Scott to me, always saying he was over hyped and stupid. He'd never shut up about it!"
"Maybe that's why he caused a fuss this morning!" Henry said but James frowned.
"I don't think so, that diesel threatened to scrap him and Scotsman," James put forward. "Scotsman didn't take any of it and threatened him but Arrow looked so terrified that he started crying."
"Nonsense," Tornado snapped harshly. "He was probably just playing for sympathy like he usually does, he's nothing but a lying little sneak. He did it to me and now he's trying to do it to you lot."
Thomas looked doubtful.
"I don't think he was pretending Tornado," the blue tank engine said quietly. "He looked very scared."
"And that new diesel's a nasty piece of work," James said. "I saw him myself."
"Sir Topham's going to be sending him back in the next week and getting another diesel named Bear," Edward said quietly.
"That diesel," James suddenly remembered. "Scotsman said Cain had hired him. The diesel didn't even deny it."
"WHAT!" Tornado suddenly loudly shouted, startling all the other engines. "Then that means, Scotsman's in danger! What if Diesel 10 and Arrow are in league with each other?! Did you not think of that?"
The Sudrian engines were stunned in shock.
"Tornado, Arrow has been on Sodor for three months, he has not once acted out or made any attempt to communicate with Scotsman," Edward said calmly.
"He was just biding his time," Tornado hissed angrily. Her boiler began to creak as she began to build up steam again. "You don't know the things Arrow has done, he's a demon that likes to bide his time. I'll crush him when I get my buffers on him."
Henry and James glanced at each other alarmed as Thomas suddenly looked very scared.
"Tornado, you need to think about this rationally," Edward urged but Tornado ignored him.
"Ms Olivia should never have agreed to have him sent here," she began ranting to herself now, riling herself up as she spoke.
"Tornado, don't do something rash please, you need to calm down," Henry begged her.
"Rash! Rash!" She spat angrily. "Is it rash to want to protect my brothers when they could be in trouble?!"
Tornado began to steam out of the shed ignoring the others' protests.
"Tornado please!" Emily begged her friend as she went to follow her. She had to wait for the turntable but within seconds they had lost sight of Tornado.
"You go and try to follow her Emily," Edward told her. "Thomas and I can go look for help."
Emily just gave a whistle and went off to follow Tornado without another word.
The remaining engines glanced at each other as a terrible sense of foreboding descending over Tidmouth sheds.
The night was going to be a long one, they could feel it.
It was unusually busy at Ulfstead Castle when Gordon and Flying Scotsman arrived at the platforms. There were no trains running yet people were loitering around.
They weren't passengers or groundsmen though. From what the two brothers could see they were security guards and Sir Robert's personal staff.
"What's going on?" Gordon asked as they approached the Scotsman's personal berth in the castle.
His question wasn't answered but he then immediately saw why.
Green Arrow sat timidly in the Scotsman's berth as the smaller Gresley had seemed to have taken shelter in it.
"Green Arrow?" Flying Scotsman asked as he was uncoupled from Gordon and had began to be turned around. He slowly entered the berth next to Green Arrow with concern on his face. "What happened?"
Green Arrow did not even attempt to communicate, he simply sat there silent and trembling.
It was then that Gordon and Scotsman saw the deep gouge marks in Arrow's tender and the warped metal of his cab. Clearly something had attacked Green Arrow and he had taken refuge at Ulfstead Castle in Flying Scotsman's berth.
Flying Scotsman's gazed hardened and he glanced at Gordon who looked equally as furious.
"Did that diesel do this to you?" The Flying Scotsman suddenly asked, his voice stern and cold.
Green Arrow looked away from the Scotsman, his demeanour timid and frightened. He gave it a few moments before flashing his lamps in confirmation.
((-.- . …))
"We need to warn Sir Topham Hatt!" Gordon said but he was distracted by Sir Robert who had hurried out to meet him.
"He's been informed Gordon, don't you worry," he assured the blue engine.
"Where is Green Arrow's crew?" Flying Scotsman demanded angrily. "Why didn't they report him being threatened this morning?"
"His driver Yvonne was taken ill this morning," SIr Robert said. "The replacement driver said that Green Arrow was attacked by Diesel 10 this morning before hiding himself in Henry's forest for the entire day and then coming here to Ulfstead castle. Diesel 10 caught him and attacked him but he managed to get away."
Gordon and Scotsman glanced at each other.
"Cain's getting more brazen," Scotsman said. "He must be getting desperate."
"That and Olivia has been back to the mainland to deal with business this past week," Sir Robert said quietly. "I wouldn't be surprised if they'd taken advantage of her absence and acted because of it."
"Cowards," Scotsman hissed angrily.
He looked at Green Arrow who was sitting in the berth a terrified look on his face.
"I promised I would help you, Green Arrow," The Scotsman said kindly. "I won't let anything happen to you."
Green Arrow looked nervously over to the Flying Scotsman who gave him a warm smile. He looked at Gordon who gave him a strained one, but it was clear that he was respecting his brother's wishes.
"I've beefed up the security here so that no one will try anything," Sir Robert smiled.
Gordon and Scotsman's faces suddenly looked shocked as Yvonne suddenly approached Sir Robert with a gun pointed at his head.
"Sir!" Gordon shouted in panic.
"Your security wasn't enough I'm afraid," she said coldly.
"Yvonne what are you doing?!"
"I'm here for Scotsman," she snarled angrily.
"Don't try me, little lady," the Scotsman said, his voice deadly. "I'll regretfully have to crush you beneath my wheels if I have to defend myself and would rather not do that."
Yvonne seemed to reconsider but her face hardened and she glared at Sir Robert.
"You got past Olivia's vetting, quite impressive, but you do realise that Cain is focused on Green Arrow now?" Sir Robert told her calmly. "Intel suggests he's deemed Scotsman a lost cause, so now he wishes to make the most of his opportunities."
"Scotsman is still his main target," Yvonne argued but Sir Robert didn't look convinced.
"Then please tell me why Diesel 10 is targeting Arrow and not Scotsman," Sir Robert said ignoring her. "Why would you allow Arrow to be scrapped? Your family has a proud history with his class of engines."
"Diesel 10 was going to rough him up, that was all, enough so Arrow could get a rebuild," Yvonne snapped back but Sir Robert looked unconvinced.
"Is that why you removed his voice box?"
Yvonne stared at Sir Robert, a guilty look flashing across her face.
Behind them Green Arrow's expression suddenly turned into one of hurt and fury. Steam began to hiss from him as his fireman was startled from the tremendous jolt that ran through the engine.
Yvonne turned to the engine who was now blasting steam at with tremendously loud hissing. Tears of anger were welling up in his eyes. He looked dangerously livid.
Sir Robert glanced at the now furious engine as it began to seemingly raise the pressure in its boiler and an unpleasant snarl stretched across his face.
Flying Scotsman and Gordon glanced at each other worried.
"It was only supposed to be temporary, they said it would be fine once it was put back-"
"You're an idiot!" Gordon suddenly snapped at her. "Even if it's put back, he won't be able to speak properly! You've permanently damaged him!"
Gordon didn't like Green Arrow but he was furious that someone could be so callous and foolish in regards to their engine, especially a driver.
Yvonne was so distracted by Gordon and the now furious Green Arrow that she didn't see the guard who quickly grabbed her and disarmed her.
Sir Robert breathed a sigh of relief and went up to Green Arrow, trying to reassure him and calm him down but he only glared down at him furiously.
A loud familiar whistle suddenly blasted through the cold air.
Scotsman and Gordon brightened up.
"Tornado!" Gordon greeted her happily.
"Bit of an awkward time to arrive right now but it's good to see you Tornado!" Flying Scotsman cheerily greeted her. His face fell when he saw the expression on her face. "Tornado what-"
"YOU SLIMY GIT!" She shrieked her eyes burning with rage as she glared at Green Arrow who stared at her terrified and confused.
